Tough call with this series. All-in-all I like the color versions this time. I really enjoyed the color version edit of the final image. Your tonal treatment was really tasteful. I generally prefer applying B+W to more more "contrasty" compositions. Living in Southest KY I fully understand the challenge of shooting this time of year. All of the colors exist on a spectrum of dull green to brown. It can be tough to just chalk up the time and effort invested in an outing to experience gained. I love that you aren't afraid to show that side of the process as a pro to the rest of us. It definitely helps me to accept my personal experiences.
Well the photo that looked best in color was the last one. I didn't like it in b&w because it has moore character with the light. The previous photos look nice in both ways. I recently went on a similar day and I came with one solid photo but I am waiting for more autumnish look :) overall a very nice video.
You know what makes you a unique landscape photographer, Mark? Your artistic touch and creativity when constructing the compositiion! Phenomenal work even in unfavorable challenging conditions!
I think it's great that you're taking us out again. You do that far too rarely, I would like to see more videos on location. I really liked the way you filmed, this is one of your best videos.
The shot of Table Rock and foliage looked great in B&W and the rest I prefer in color. Summer is not meant to be vibrant like spring or fall but images still evoke a mood response in the natural presentation I hope you go back for Fall colors. The hike is short but no joke and once you've been to the top ,you know what awaits you and it's worth it.
I love photography but I love that it motivates me to head out with the hopes of capturing a great shot- sometimes that is 20 minutes from the house but sometimes it is traveling across 2-3 states and spending a week chasing that great photo! Heading to the Tetons and Yellowstone the end of the month and while I have been there before several times, never in the fall- excited beyond words!
Mark, I really enjoy the format of this video. Fun to watch and very relatable. In fact you weren't kidding about getting off of that hill. It reminded me of a time I got caught at Lake Powell without a flashlight and had to literally use long exposures to chart my path down the face of a sandstone cliff. My Nikon D780 literally saved my life. I let my guard waaaay down because I was on a houseboat and we had parked in this cove surrounded by a 50 foot plateau. The spot I need to get to was literally 150 feet from the boat but 30 feet above it and a 1/4 mile hike because there was literally just one way up or down without free climbing. It was a small ramp and it was easy to navigate.... In the light. So I sat through golden hour, then blue hour and then total darkness. The darkness I was looking for all week. There was a full moon and it was rising literally at sunset when we arrived but this was the last day of the trip, a week later and I could finally settle in for some astrophotography. I got some of the best pictures of my life before the moon began to rise... It was after 11 pm now so I started heading back and realized the path was impossible to see because I was still in the shadow of a massive butte. I was not too concerned until I got to the cliff edge. I didn't even have a flashlight. My cell was in the boat (no signal). So pulled out my Nikon and cranked the screen up to 10. Held it out before me and nothing. It was like shining light into a black hole. The darkness was too consuming and my screen could not illuminate anything but itself.... Then I had an idea. I'll crank up the ISO to like 32k (haha it still hurt to do this even though I was literally just doing it to see ), and shoot a 10 to 30 second exposure. It worked, the night turned to day and I could see that the place I thought was the path, was really just a death trap. I took about 2 or 3 more pics and quickly found the ramp to safety. Yikes!
One of my favorite images from a recent trip to Tahiti was a shot of a hillside. Massive bright green. Went black and white, with Silver Efex, and it is a stunning shot. You never know.
So happy to have been led upon your channel. Your passion matches mine and too the manifestations of your photography career flourish is inspiring and motivating. I learn from you and I thank you.
Outstanding video Mark. It’s great to see your Van and the efforts you exerted to make it your home away from home. I wish you a very safe journey, loaded with excellent videos and photos from Iceland. The area of this tutorial is excellent. Thank you. Stay safe Mate.
I couldn’t agree with you more, Mark. Just getting out there can be as fulfilling as the images you capture. And when the conditions don’t give you what you’d like for your photos, we still come back somewhat satisfied just for having been there. I’m looking forward to seeing you in Iceland very soon, 😊
I liked the commentary about using the summer as a time to practice and expand your creative horizons. I feel the same way. I've taken on some specific projects this summer to really hone in on some key areas to practice. When you were done the video and just put the camera away to give yourself time to recharge and reflect, it was a great reminder as to why we shoot in the great out of doors. I hope you have a great trip to Iceland. One of my favourite places on earth.
Nice to see you out in the field taking photos. I like tips and tricks videos as much as the next person but theres something awesome about seeing it go down real time. Great work 👍
Really like these images...i think the color ones were great. I know the colors weren't instagram-ish, but the light was so gorgeous that it worked, esp since they were smaller scenes.
This video helped me get into a better mindset about Colorado's 300+ days of sun. Your shots reminded me of Nigel Danson's compositions. He's got this ethereal quality to his photos and yours had that too. I liked your B&W photos best.
Everything you shoot and show is beautiful and perfectly composed!! Do you ever offer feedback on photographs that we, your viewers, take to help improve composition? Sometimes I feel I've lost my creativity.
Great video, Mark! Love the "On Location" videos. I generally think that color looks best, but those morning photos looked best in B&W in my opinion -- gives a cool timeless look.
Cool Landscape area- I would not be able to climb those cliff faces so nice to see- Not sure which I preferred - B&W or color-- I think the evening shot I prefer in color-- Morning shots in B&W - An alternative option for summer photography is close up if not macro-- I do not own a macro lens and yet I ave some success using a 70-200 and then cropping it down-- With Gigapixel or PS upscale you can still print quite large.
Great to see you on location again, and a location with such potential. Look forward to a return trip in a few months, or even next spring, especially if the setting sun still catches those rock formations. As you said, summer lighting often suits a different style of landscape photography, such as smaller features and details.
As always great video! I need to get to that location. I follow a lot of NC Photographers on Instagram because I live in East TN. I see a lot of pictures from here. Keep your awesome videos coming! You need to come to East TN soon!
Mark this was an epic video!!! love these on location videos. Plus the little bit of ur supper and the van! oh man that looked tasty. can't wait to see more of the van and these type of videos. Looks like its gonna be a fantastic spot in the fall
LOVE the field video. I'd love more of these. the studio videos are fine but they're a bit "sterile". It's great to see you out and about and doing what you love. Even if it isn't exactly under inspiring conditions.
Nice video Mark. The first photo is absolutely fantastic. I prefer the other photos in B&W To be really useful, to get out of your comfort zone, to broaden your horizons👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Mark for another informative and informational video. I agree with your assessment regarding black and white use based on environmental conditions given. I’m sure the fall is going to provide some great foliage to wash out that dullness. Looking forward to being near that location in October.
Fabulous video! Amazing scenery, much appreciated by a USA loving Brit. Great to see your approach to less than inspiring shots and how to make the most of the situation. Loved the Band W and colour. Both excellent in my book.
Another great video, Mark. Nice to see the van being used! For me, I prefer the colour images - that lovely morning glow gets lost in the B&W conversions.
For me in this case (even though the colours aren't portfolio worthy) the coloured versions. I love B&W photos and photography, but specially when the darker areas are really black so the contrast is really high. The emphasis on the main subject is heightened when done right. Again, great video! Love to watch and learn from you.
Merci for this great video. I find it very inspiring and as usual, filled with tons of tips. Admittedly, I'm more of a color than B&W type. But your point in getting out of your comfort zone is well taken.
Hi Mark, you may not have been entirely inspired with you photographer's hat on, but you certainly made a grand day out of the trip. The scenery was really awesome. I'm always interested to understand your thought process, as I learn so much. So thanks , as ever, for sharing.
@@MarkDenneyPhoto Hi Mark, just one other thought .. might it be worth adding some sort of personal safety message occasionally when you go to areas that are fairly remote, since much as we don't expect things to go wrong, sometimes they do. ( and yes, when Noah was running around in short pants ... I once was a boy scout )
OMG, cutting with your knife on that enamel plate was like nails on chalkboard hahaha That's the quickest way to dull a knife :P Anyways, great video and thanks for all the info you've given us all! Keep it up! I always look forward to your videos!
I loved this video…it is the habitat I really enjoy being in for sunrise and sunsets. That is what I enjoy most about Shenandoah. I liked your conversations to black and white. I had not tried that, but have many dull photos mountaintop photos to play with. Excellent video as always.
Love the on location videos seeing as most are in my backyard. I really like the black and white. I’ve been trying to catch hawksbill from a distance but haven’t found a great location yet.
16.12 - Behind you, behind you !!! Great shots, really inspiring me to get out and amongst it once Victoria Australia is released from its Covid captors !!
Good video. I live and do most of my landscape photos in Arizona and sometimes I get months with poor sky conditions. It can be very frustrating. Sometimes I have to get very creative in order to get out and do what I love doing. Your idea of going B&W is a good one, might try that myself. I usually reserve B&W for urban shootings, but haven't really delved into it in landscape photography.
Great video Mark. I do enjoy your work. In all honesty, I liked the color versions of the photos you took way better than the B/W renderings. Keep up the great stuff.
Should have given a warning not to watch when you’re hungry. Those sizzling cooking sounds, and then that juicy sausage.. As aspected, dope video! That carchase shot even had me feel like i was watching a getaway movie. And then that absolute stunning location! My preference go out to the colored photo’s!
In my film days I "shot" almost exclusively in B&W. My brain has been a little slow to realize that I can "shoot" in digital color and convert to B&W in post. I will be heading out to the Eastern Sierra in late September and will make it a point of looking for compositions that favor B&W processing. Be well and safe journey's, Mark.
Great video! Love the way you look at things! Im also in the Blue Ridge Mountains, SW VA. Love the area! If you ever wanna do a photo meet up, let me know!
Having the ability to flip from color to B&W is relatively new in photography. We can change almost anything - not always a good thing. Beauty in photography is very subjective and how you feel about the beauty of your photography leads you to the editing, selection, and presentation of your work. I only know if I like something - I like some of the B&W and some color.
I have been experimenting with converting photos with dull/muted colours to B&W. Presets seem an excellent way to go and the inbuilt LR ones were helpful to get me started. However there are many add-in presents available and I particularly like the Jamie WIndsor ones. Very inexpensive and they give me more subtle results on which I can then build.
This is so cool, I have a question. What do you carry to prevent possible dangers when you are hiking in areas like this? You know maybe encounters with wild animals.
Thought this was McAfee Knob in Virginia at first (one of my favorite hikes out there) but reading comments I see it’s in North Carolina instead. Nice images!
Hey man I’ll go hiking with ya anytime. I live in Greensboro 😁. Looks like you might be on Hawksbill in Linville Gorge hmm. I could be wrong. It’s been a minute since I’ve been up that way
If you’re heading to Iceland, you’ll want to take a wide aperture (f2.8 or better) wide angle lens for the Aurora pics. Not sure you have one in your current set up? Depending on when you’re there might be a little early for the Aurora though…
funny to see now your video after the tips : Landscape photo, do use landscape orientation... No need to use tripod: the stabilizer of your camera is good enough, and last of your tip: no need micro adjustment on tripod, you can resize in post ! :)
Hi Mark, thanks for another enjoyable and interesting video. I'm wondering what the small box was used for that you had around your neck. The strap was marked "black diamond". Just curious!!
Always great videos Mark, irregardless of subject matter. A general question: how many followers purposely seek out B&W subjects & if so do they tend to be people, architecture, nature, etc.?
Hi, Mark. Question for you. On this trip, did you make a special trip from your home (Pinehurst) to western NC (Blue Ridge Mts.), or do you generally have an agenda of multiple stops / photo shoots when you go that far? We lived in North GA for a while then moved back to NJ. I am getting an itch to move to western NC as I love the Smokies, Blue Ridge and Appalachians.
I enjoyed your video, like some of the other comments I really like it when you are on location. I have kind of an off topic question though. What is that device (red) you have clipped to your back pack? I prefer the color versions.
When scouting an area at dusk for a dawn shoot, how do you overcome the lighting to find compositions? The rocks you shot at dusk won't be as interesting at dawn because the lighting will be drastically different. When I have scouted a shoot at the opposite time of day, I miss interesting subjects because the lighting and shadows are all wrong. How do you find success in this scenario?
Nice video, nice images as well. I have a question about that ballhead. I'm looking for a ballhead that will work fine during cold conditions as winters here get really cold and ballheads with hydraulic locking will become hard to work with when temp gets down to --20c or below. Do you think your ballhead works better? It doesnt look like there's any fluid in it? Best regards from northern Sweden.
Really enjoy your channel Mark. Where are you in the Blue Ridge Mountains? We used to live near Asheville and spent a lot of time hiking that area. Keep up the great content!
Black and white, I do the same thing with uninspiring and less desirable images- usually seems to pay off as the light variations in tones can have a dramatic effect after editing- I think you should do more black and white imagery- you’d probably surprise yourself
I’m trying to get the fujifilm xt30 and I don’t know what I want to get into, In the sense of landscape or street photography. And my budget with all the stuff like lenses and camera is 900$ and the cheapest version I found is 15-45mm lense with the camera. Is that ok for both of the scenarios? Landscape and street.? Or should it be wise to save up more money and get a 18-55 mm lense which is 200$ more or so. Thank you!
Can I ask about your ball head. I noticed you’re using the Aspen ball head. When you rotate your camera from landscape to portrait in your first morning composition, it rotated on the same plane rather than tilting over to the side. Is that a feature of the Aspen. I ask because I can’t see that feature on the Aspen website. I hope my question is understood.
Did you prefer the black & white or color versions?
I find myself doing B&W more often when there isn't the light for colour. This week it has been very grey here.

I know personal preference, but I much preferred the images in colour
B&W looked good.👍
thank you!
Enjoyed the video Mark! I like BW and do think it was appropriate for what you did.
Thanks Joe!
Filters---->Color---->Convert to Greyscale
Done.
Thanks Connor!
Just realised, you were gonna show some new stuff in the van...?
Hey man I’ll go hiking with ya anytime. I live in Greensboro 😁. Looks like you might be on Hawksbill in Linville Gorge hmm. I could be wrong. It’s been a minute since I’ve been up that way
This makes me want to get a camper van...LOL
Personally, I am not fond of b&w without contrast, except for a high or low key. I guess the versions in color are more appealing
I'd suggest shooting at f16 instead of f11 as your shooting with a crop medium format. 😉
Thanks Robert!
I know that mountain! 😉
Great video! Where in the blue ridge mountains are you shooting?
I see you have the Garmin In reach, are you also using a Garmin fenix watch ?
Really enjoy your channel Mark. Where are you in the Blue Ridge Mountains? We used to live near Asheville and spent a lot of time hiking that area. Keep up the great content!
This was just North of Morganton NC at Hawksbill Summit
I was over towards the eastern side of the Linville Gorge.
Black and white, I do the same thing with uninspiring and less desirable images- usually seems to pay off as the light variations in tones can have a dramatic effect after editing-
I think you should do more black and white imagery- you’d probably surprise yourself
He loosened the tripod lens collar on the GF 100-200mm
I would rather see your worst color shot than your best black and white
