Writing has been my passion for a long time, and I didn't know I was feeling burnt out about it until I watched Kiki's Delivery Service. This movie really teached me about the worth of rest and recharging your passions, and this video helped to make the point clearer. A year late, but it was really great
Burn out is real. So glad we can have conversations about it these days. Hopefully these conversations can be further expanded to create more of a system to support those who are burned out.
I used to think what I was dealing with as a creator was burnout. I have/had so many started projects unfinished. Now in my 6th decade, I’ve finally learned that I have ADHD, and have just been using strategies to work around it. (It wasn’t even a diagnosable thing when I was a child in school.) Learning how your particular brain works can help you find strategies that can be tailored for you in particular. My advice, If you are constantly having trouble as a creator, is talk with a professional Ursula therapist, who has seen many people. They offer good advice, and you can find your own path through burn-out. I love this movie, which is why your video came up in my feed. I get so few views on RUclips, but never think it’s your fault. It’s often the robot passing them to different people. I started editing videos for a friend in a particular subject, and he’s complaining that some new video only get 10k views. My short movies are low double figures. So much of YT is the robots. Good luck.
I just noticed this and commented on another creator's video. I just watched this movie (yet again) and wanted to see what other people get from it. And what I find is that this movie is so inspiring that even a smaller channel will likely have a video about it. You have 30 views on your Halloween video. But you still do what you do. There's something in you that compels you to create, and the movie is all about that. This video is proof. And like all the kindness that is shown to Kiki when she needs it and especially when she doesn't, I have to engage with your video to help you out. It's the absolute least I could do, and it's not even a fraction of what you deserve. Keep making videos, buddy. Don't worry about the views. Worry about always having something you want to make and share.
I hear you, buddy. I'm decades older and going thru something similar. New-tuber, modest following, also ran through my banked catalogue just as burnout hit. As a chaotic creative, I've spent my life a (happy) slave to my muse. Drawing, creative writing, musical theater, animation and filmmaking. The joy of creating was the thing. In my late 20's, I found I was most on fire when I worked non-creative jobs. Those boring, unchallenging jobs WERE the break from creating that refilled my well. But now I'm working long, long hours in a demanding, creative job while trying to keep up with my YT channel. It can be brutal. Feeling like a failure is Kryptonite for creatives! This wonderful video was a great reminder that it's not only smart for creatives to step back now and then, but essential. Very well done. And Kudos for being so candid. i’m about 7 months late to this video but i’m really glad you covered this topic. i’m currently struggling with burnout, and your video really helped just to clear my mind for a bit, while also help offer solutions in a way lol. at the moment, i truthfully can’t physically bring myself to draw or paint or whatever but i’m glad to know i’m not alone in this struggle :’)

The relevance of this movie to the generations of today is amazing. I am sure for many millennials, this was their first introduction to Japanese animation (it was for me at least) and that does not even address the story. The concept of "trying to make it and succeed" in an increasingly difficult world is one many of us relate to and its the same issue Kiki faces PLUS she deals with the burn out from her craft in that process rendering her nearly helpless. I could write whole essays comparing real world struggles to this movie, but I will stop here. I am sub number 598 by the way so good work!

Currently dealing with burnout. These types of videos, especially ones about Studio Ghibli recently, have been a guiding light for me at a time when I'm feeling decrepit and spiritually bankrupt. Just know that what you're creating is magic. I've always thought: If I could encapsulate a piece of myself within a single video to share to others, then I'd be prouder and happier than ever. I hope you feel that way.
I'm burnt out too. I feel so so tired. There is so much to do. My brain is not out of creative ideas. I just feel so limited to accomplish them. Every few months, I get into this major fog of feeling an exhaustion that sleep doesn't solve. But the demands for my assistance never stops no matter how down I feel. Do you get such cycles too? I know how you feel. every few months a fall into a creative slump, despite desperately wanting to create something, but lacking the energy to do so. Love this film so deeply, turn to it so often when I need to reaffirm my work or new journeys.. and I just realized recently I haven’t had just “activist burnout” I had autism burnout from being misdiagnosed. I just got out of a gig being a reporter here in Florida and uh yeah lots of gears turning. This was a nice voice of reason to find idk ty.

I just found this video today as i was looking up videos on Ghibli and Miyazaki-san. Thank you for this video ☺️ I experienced burnout as an artist and writer myself and in the last year or so I've been struggling to write. I did make some drawing related projects and finished them, but writing has been much slower process lately. So I am trying to be kind to myself and focus on drawing more if writing isn't coming along as well. Thanks again, loved the movie also, Ursula and Kiki are great together overcoming their hurdles 😊
I tend to rewatch Kiki’s delivery service any time a get a period of burnout. The scene with the artist friend always comforts me during that time and I have taken to heart the advice she gives. It also feels nice to be seen with that scene.

I’ve been in this weird burnout phase for almost 4 years now, struggling to feel my worth and completely unable to create anything for myself from myself, while still having to produce art at a full time job (animation industry yay). But recently, I don’t know how or why, I’ve been feeling my creative spark again, i started sketching and writing a bit, and even set up a little planned list of things I want to make and new ideas for projects. I don’t want to overwork myself, so I’m taking it slow, but it is such a great feeling finding myself thinking about a new story and enjoying the idea of giving life to it, or going to bed with my brain still running, having to quickly write those notes down before they fade with my dreams. Thanks for this video, it reminded me that I am not the only one struggling with it, and that my worth is not tied to it. Gotta take it slow and enjoy the ride!

Hello, I've stumbled upon this video on twitter. I'm an aspiring artist and I had burnout many times and yes, it sucks, a *lot*. But I hope you get back on your feet soon! I'm not quite sure if this can be applied to video making, but when I get stuck at drawing, I try to use a different approach with a _I'm not serious, it's just for fooling around_ kind of mindset, which helps in keeping out the "ew, it's work" -like thoughts. But anyways, hope you get better!
Honestly I think your approach to burn out works quite well. I’ve been trying to make lil dumb animations to help relieve stress of coming up with new video ideas and it works. Anyway I hope burnout doesn’t hit you too hard in the future, have a good day

I'm definitely feeling out of sorts lately. Been working way too much for all the right reasons. Moving into an actual home thats kind of far away from family, and having to find a new way to make money. It all seems so daunting and overwhelming. Change is good, but it sure does keep us up at night sometimes.

I love this video! I think Kiki's Delivery Service also covers impostor syndrome through Kiki losing her ability to fly. This then led to uncertainty in other parts of her life since she used to be able to fly so easily in the past.
I know I am a year late from when you posted this video but I wanted you to know what this video meant to me and my wife. My wife is an artist and she paints some amazing pictures. But recently she has been trying to get into illustrations, and she has found that it is harder for her to do this than what she orrigionally thought. It made her frustrated and confused. She couldn't understand why she was struggling this much with something she loved. Well we found this video and it helped her to find a way to be able to do her art again. So thank you for this video. It really helped at least one person to refind their passion.

Kiki's is such a wonderful film. My wife and I are wedding photographers and about two years ago I got hit by burn out really badly. Eventually had the hard conversation with my wife of "I'm not sure I want to do this anymore" We did a bunch of restructuring and cutting back how much we were doing, but honestly I don't know if that passion for wedding photography will ever come back. It was interesting seeing how differently my wife and I viewed Kiki's. She has never really experienced depression, and it's something I've dealt with my whole life. She can't directly relate to the way Kiki felt in the middle of the movie, when you no longer enjoy the things that brought you happiness. Even her conversations take on a dead-pan tone, devoid of life. I adore all of Studio Ghibli's movies but this one definitely resonates the most strongly with me.
I found this video a year after you made it 😊 keep doing what makes you happy regardless of views. Btw I have a tattoo of Kiki on my arm and as a creative person I have always run into burn out constantly. I love the message it sends in the movie because I feel like I can relate to it ❤
I get the ADHD hyperfixations that can last for literal years, and when burnout hits those it hits VERY HARD. I've been in a slump for a few years now, afraid to get interested in anything new because I'm afraid to get hyperfixated on it and then lose it and end up in another slump later 😭
As for me, I have a hard time going on when I come across abrasive people or get my car damaged while parking on the street. But I've somehow made it to 70 and am still working.
I've experienced severe burnout, and currently am on the edge of it again, only this time, I had the wherewithal to look up whether there was a name for it, and found burnout online. The more I read, the more things made sense, and the less I thought it was totally my fault. The fact that it's actually fairly common was helpful to reduce some of the stress related to the symptoms. Before learning more about it I thought I was simply defective or didn't have as much discipline as I always saw myself having, and thought "if I just work a little harder, I can...." over and over again. Taking breaks would sometimes have the effect of making me panic about deadlines, thinking "oh no. If I break now, I'll break forever and lose all momentum and never get it done." And instead of relaxing and recharging, which would have actually helped my productivity, I instead made the problem worse by thinking that way. I just could not relax. This time, however, I've learned just how much even short breaks help, at least, when you're on the edge of burnout or are sensing that edge. The trick is to recognize the first signs of it, and apply a nice big slathered balm of rest and relaxation in the form of physical or psychological rest, whichever is needed for that particular situation. Usually in my case it's both. My best advice for avoiding it is: 1) be kind to yourself. Treat yourself the way you'd treat someone (doesn't have to be human) you love, *especially* on days when you dislike yourself. Sure, you hear that all the time and it sounds overdone and corny but it's said in every mental health advice list out there for a reason. 2) take care of yourself. Eat healthier food. Get adequate sleep. Again cliche, but I dismissed this until I actually started trying it and it does some incredible things for your mental state 3) slow down. Enjoy being alive. Find little things in your day that bring you joy, or try to remember what those things were at a point where you last felt joy. Seek that thing out and let yourself experience whatever you're feeling in that moment. Think of nothing else except that moment. This is a form of psychological rest. Do things that you love to do that are unrelated to what caused the burnout. In other words, do nothing productive. Lie around. Stare at clouds. As Ursula says "take long walks, stare at the scenery, doze off at noon..." I swear it works. The walks especially. I highly recommend taking walks in the countryside or in forests, or gardens, anything like that near you. And if there's nothing like that nearby, go seek it out, take a day vacation. Also, if like me you have no choice but to work a soul sucking job you hate to eat and have a roof over your head, so you can't exactly take all the time you might want for this, yet, then try what I do until I can get to a place in my life where I can get adequate mental rest; find time in your day somewhere, make it a permanent part of your day to, for at least an hour, do something you find truly soothing. It could be going for a walk, reading a favorite story, playing a game, making art of any kind, including writing, assuming it's not what caused the burnout, do that thing. Sometimes I use that time for what's called "guided imagery" which is a fancy way of saying either follow someone else's guide to imagination land or follow your own imagination. Make up an ideal place for you. An ideal person (again, doesn't have to be human) to talk to. Basically, if you remember making up stories like i did as a kid, indulge in it again for a little while. Not only is it perfectly healthy for adults as well as kids, it's a serious boost to mental health and creativity. It can also help with problem solving and stress reduction, and is sometimes close to a type of meditation. 4) remember the burnout is not forever. Again, be kind to yourself. Trying to force yourself out of it to get back to being productive faster will probably just make it worse and be counterproductive. The burnout is caused by overwork and/or overstressing, and it results many times in loss of your ability to feel the passion which drives you to do what you love. Hence "burn-out"; your fire has been quenched by being driven too hard for too long, and you need to refuel. Refueling takes time, and the fuel doesn't come from nowhere. Energy may be a concept for us to understand the macroscopic effects of many moving parts, but its effect is very real and very apparent when that energy has been used up or you begin to run out because you haven't let yourself stop to get more fuel. Also, because burnout is psychological, refueling can sometimes be something we forget about, and also because it's not a physical thing like going out to chop more wood to put on a fire, sometimes we don't even know at first what specific thing we need to refuel aside from physical reat and care. But rest assured, your inspiration will come back to you, and when it does, sometimes it comes in the most random time and the most surprising ways, which can actually be great for when you do feel ready to get back to work on things; you have fresh, cool new inspiration which can bring a whole new dimension to your work, doing wonders for your creativity. To anyone on that edge or who crashed and burned right into that burnout wall, trust this: it really will be okay. There's nothing wrong with you, and it's not your fault. You are worthy of kindess, love and gentle care, and you owe all those things to yourself for working so hard. I don't know you, but for you to have reached this point, you have to have worked very, very hard, and I'm proud of you. You should feel proud, too. And now it's time to take a well deserved break. You'll know when it's time for the break to be over, because you'll be ready. You'll have that bright, shiny inspiration burning like starlight, like a roaring fire inside you, and you'll be doing that thing you love again with all the passion you had before. Taking a break does not mean you love it less. Taking a break means you love this thing and you want to keep doing it, but no one is a machine with limitless energy. There is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine, and the same goes for you. Have love and trust for yourself, get rest, eat well, enjoy life, and you'll be the absolute best you can be at whatever you love doing.
I got you. I’m in the middle of drawing my own beautiful web comics and I started to notice that, perfection is mostly about arts looking like each other, it lacks a something that tells about the artist’s authenticity and profoundness and that’s why I love Hayao Miyazaki and his team’s style : it’s handmade and deep. I believe that burn out comes when we’re so focused on obtaining a result that we believe is perfection, but my thought is, imperfection is a style. One thing that can’t be taken away. Value your own imperfections. That’s what I strive to remember when I draw ; mastering imperfection is a real skill.

then there’s a chance that you don’t actually want to do the thing. sometimes the idea of a project can seem like something you want to do, but in the process you realise it’s not for you. you gotta ask yourself if you really wanted to do something, why haven’t you done it already?

I just found this video today as i was looking up videos on Ghibli and Miyazaki-san. Thank you for this video ☺️ I experienced burnout as an artist and writer myself and in the last year or so I've been struggling to write. I did make some drawing related projects and finished them, but writing has been much slower process lately. So I am trying to be kind to myself and focus on drawing more if writing isn't coming along as well. Thanks again, loved the movie also, Ursula and Kiki are great together overcoming their hurdles 😊
I tend to rewatch Kiki’s delivery service any time a get a period of burnout. The scene with the artist friend always comforts me during that time and I have taken to heart the advice she gives. It also feels nice to be seen with that scene.

I’ve been in this weird burnout phase for almost 4 years now, struggling to feel my worth and completely unable to create anything for myself from myself, while still having to produce art at a full time job (animation industry yay).
But recently, I don’t know how or why, I’ve been feeling my creative spark again, i started sketching and writing a bit, and even set up a little planned list of things I want to make and new ideas for projects.
I don’t want to overwork myself, so I’m taking it slow, but it is such a great feeling finding myself thinking about a new story and enjoying the idea of giving life to it, or going to bed with my brain still running, having to quickly write those notes down before they fade with my dreams.
Thanks for this video, it reminded me that I am not the only one struggling with it, and that my worth is not tied to it. Gotta take it slow and enjoy the ride!

Hello, I've stumbled upon this video on twitter. I'm an aspiring artist and I had burnout many times and yes, it sucks, a *lot*. But I hope you get back on your feet soon! I'm not quite sure if this can be applied to video making, but when I get stuck at drawing, I try to use a different approach with a _I'm not serious, it's just for fooling around_ kind of mindset, which helps in keeping out the "ew, it's work" -like thoughts. But anyways, hope you get better!
Honestly I think your approach to burn out works quite well. I’ve been trying to make lil dumb animations to help relieve stress of coming up with new video ideas and it works. Anyway I hope burnout doesn’t hit you too hard in the future, have a good day

I'm definitely feeling out of sorts lately. Been working way too much for all the right reasons. Moving into an actual home thats kind of far away from family, and having to find a new way to make money. It all seems so daunting and overwhelming. Change is good, but it sure does keep us up at night sometimes.

I love this video! I think Kiki's Delivery Service also covers impostor syndrome through Kiki losing her ability to fly. This then led to uncertainty in other parts of her life since she used to be able to fly so easily in the past.

I know I am a year late from when you posted this video but I wanted you to know what this video meant to me and my wife. My wife is an artist and she paints some amazing pictures. But recently she has been trying to get into illustrations, and she has found that it is harder for her to do this than what she orrigionally thought. It made her frustrated and confused. She couldn't understand why she was struggling this much with something she loved. Well we found this video and it helped her to find a way to be able to do her art again. So thank you for this video. It really helped at least one person to refind their passion.

Kiki's is such a wonderful film.
My wife and I are wedding photographers and about two years ago I got hit by burn out really badly. Eventually had the hard conversation with my wife of "I'm not sure I want to do this anymore"
We did a bunch of restructuring and cutting back how much we were doing, but honestly I don't know if that passion for wedding photography will ever come back.
It was interesting seeing how differently my wife and I viewed Kiki's. She has never really experienced depression, and it's something I've dealt with my whole life. She can't directly relate to the way Kiki felt in the middle of the movie, when you no longer enjoy the things that brought you happiness. Even her conversations take on a dead-pan tone, devoid of life. I adore all of Studio Ghibli's movies but this one definitely resonates the most strongly with me.

I get the ADHD hyperfixations that can last for literal years, and when burnout hits those it hits VERY HARD. I've been in a slump for a few years now, afraid to get interested in anything new because I'm afraid to get hyperfixated on it and then lose it and end up in another slump later 😭
As for me, I have a hard time going on when I come across abrasive people or get my car damaged while parking on the street. But I've somehow made it to 70 and am still working.
I've experienced severe burnout, and currently am on the edge of it again, only this time, I had the wherewithal to look up whether there was a name for it, and found burnout online. The more I read, the more things made sense, and the less I thought it was totally my fault. The fact that it's actually fairly common was helpful to reduce some of the stress related to the symptoms.
Before learning more about it I thought I was simply defective or didn't have as much discipline as I always saw myself having, and thought "if I just work a little harder, I can...." over and over again. Taking breaks would sometimes have the effect of making me panic about deadlines, thinking "oh no. If I break now, I'll break forever and lose all momentum and never get it done." And instead of relaxing and recharging, which would have actually helped my productivity, I instead made the problem worse by thinking that way. I just could not relax.
This time, however, I've learned just how much even short breaks help, at least, when you're on the edge of burnout or are sensing that edge.
The trick is to recognize the first signs of it, and apply a nice big slathered balm of rest and relaxation in the form of physical or psychological rest, whichever is needed for that particular situation. Usually in my case it's both. My best advice for avoiding it is:
1) be kind to yourself. Treat yourself the way you'd treat someone (doesn't have to be human) you love, *especially* on days when you dislike yourself. Sure, you hear that all the time and it sounds overdone and corny but it's said in every mental health advice list out there for a reason.
2) take care of yourself. Eat healthier food. Get adequate sleep. Again cliche, but I dismissed this until I actually started trying it and it does some incredible things for your mental state
3) slow down. Enjoy being alive. Find little things in your day that bring you joy, or try to remember what those things were at a point where you last felt joy. Seek that thing out and let yourself experience whatever you're feeling in that moment. Think of nothing else except that moment. This is a form of psychological rest.
Do things that you love to do that are unrelated to what caused the burnout. In other words, do nothing productive. Lie around. Stare at clouds. As Ursula says "take long walks, stare at the scenery, doze off at noon..."
I swear it works. The walks especially. I highly recommend taking walks in the countryside or in forests, or gardens, anything like that near you. And if there's nothing like that nearby, go seek it out, take a day vacation.
Also, if like me you have no choice but to work a soul sucking job you hate to eat and have a roof over your head, so you can't exactly take all the time you might want for this, yet, then try what I do until I can get to a place in my life where I can get adequate mental rest; find time in your day somewhere, make it a permanent part of your day to, for at least an hour, do something you find truly soothing.
It could be going for a walk, reading a favorite story, playing a game, making art of any kind, including writing, assuming it's not what caused the burnout, do that thing.
Sometimes I use that time for what's called "guided imagery" which is a fancy way of saying either follow someone else's guide to imagination land or follow your own imagination. Make up an ideal place for you. An ideal person (again, doesn't have to be human) to talk to.
Basically, if you remember making up stories like i did as a kid, indulge in it again for a little while. Not only is it perfectly healthy for adults as well as kids, it's a serious boost to mental health and creativity. It can also help with problem solving and stress reduction, and is sometimes close to a type of meditation.
4) remember the burnout is not forever. Again, be kind to yourself. Trying to force yourself out of it to get back to being productive faster will probably just make it worse and be counterproductive. The burnout is caused by overwork and/or overstressing, and it results many times in loss of your ability to feel the passion which drives you to do what you love. Hence "burn-out"; your fire has been quenched by being driven too hard for too long, and you need to refuel.
Refueling takes time, and the fuel doesn't come from nowhere. Energy may be a concept for us to understand the macroscopic effects of many moving parts, but its effect is very real and very apparent when that energy has been used up or you begin to run out because you haven't let yourself stop to get more fuel.
Also, because burnout is psychological, refueling can sometimes be something we forget about, and also because it's not a physical thing like going out to chop more wood to put on a fire, sometimes we don't even know at first what specific thing we need to refuel aside from physical reat and care.
But rest assured, your inspiration will come back to you, and when it does, sometimes it comes in the most random time and the most surprising ways, which can actually be great for when you do feel ready to get back to work on things; you have fresh, cool new inspiration which can bring a whole new dimension to your work, doing wonders for your creativity.
To anyone on that edge or who crashed and burned right into that burnout wall, trust this:
it really will be okay. There's nothing wrong with you, and it's not your fault. You are worthy of kindess, love and gentle care, and you owe all those things to yourself for working so hard. I don't know you, but for you to have reached this point, you have to have worked very, very hard, and I'm proud of you. You should feel proud, too. And now it's time to take a well deserved break. You'll know when it's time for the break to be over, because you'll be ready. You'll have that bright, shiny inspiration burning like starlight, like a roaring fire inside you, and you'll be doing that thing you love again with all the passion you had before. Taking a break does not mean you love it less. Taking a break means you love this thing and you want to keep doing it, but no one is a machine with limitless energy. There is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine, and the same goes for you. Have love and trust for yourself, get rest, eat well, enjoy life, and you'll be the absolute best you can be at whatever you love doing.

I got you. I’m in the middle of drawing my own beautiful web comics and I started to notice that, perfection is mostly about arts looking like each other, it lacks a something that tells about the artist’s authenticity and profoundness and that’s why I love Hayao Miyazaki and his team’s style : it’s handmade and deep. I believe that burn out comes when we’re so focused on obtaining a result that we believe is perfection, but my thought is, imperfection is a style. One thing that can’t be taken away. Value your own imperfections. That’s what I strive to remember when I draw ; mastering imperfection is a real skill.
