Heyy great video! But i have a question i have krk rokit studio monitors and a focusrite but i have a 10s krk sub a older one. Do you think it is possible to use xlr from the monitors to the sub. And than from the sub trs balanced to the focusrite. Is this gonna work??
bro i just started looking into getting monitors for my crappy studio and all i see is your videos. thank you for actually being very helpful. left a like on all the ones i came across.
superb, this is exactly what I was looking for to add a subwoofer to my eris 4.5 studio monitors and audio interface. I was really confused on the interfacing but this video addressed this for me.
And so you know, the signal path in most active subwoofers doesn't simply pass signal from your sound source through to your satellite speakers. Signal will usually arrive into the active subwoofer full range, but leave the active subwoofer having been crossed over at the subwoofer's crossover point. Meaning, that the signal going to the satellite speakers will have had a high pass filter applied to the signal, cutting out the lows. Some active subwoofers give you the option of passing the signal through to the satellites without such filtering, but most do not.
I believe it's the other way around - most subwoofers have "high level output" outputs that can go to your main left and right, but in most cases they do NOT apply a high-pass-filter (HPF), but the full signal. I know because I keep researching this and find it frustrating and misleading that most subs can't effectively "split" the signal and keep the lows and send out the highs. There are a few that can, and actually the sub used in this video can do it! There's a HPF switch right there on the top right of the back panel. Airmotiv subs can also do it. You just have to check the specs (or search the Amazon comments) to know if a sub has HPF or not.
Almost learned the hard way, don't plug your laptop directly into it by a aux to RCA or have your laptop and the subwoofer plug into the same surge protector. I got a critical battery error and my laptop and screen monitor powered down but everything seems to be working fine. Will definitely try your way. Thanks
What are you talking about? The aux/RCAs are literally designed to receive input from your phone, laptop, or other devices. you dont need a scarlet for these little things
thanks for the video. I have a question - Should I use a subwoofer for mixing ? The reason I got studio monitors is so that I can hear accurate sound. If I add subwoofer will it defeat the purpose of the getting the monitors in the first place ?
Excellent review. I got the Eris 3.5's and am really considering adding a Sub8 to it as well for more better focused low end. Is that a South African accent I spot?
Great video! This subwoofer seems to be great when it comes to connection flexibility. I have a Sony subwoofer and, just like many others, it is more of a home theater sub and it only has one mono input for bass 😂. In my case I’m using a 4-channel stereo headphone amplifier to connect the output of my laptop to both the Sony subwoofer and the Yamaha HS4 monitors, which provides more audio level control flexibility but might introduce a little bit of noise depending on the connections, cables and the headphone amp circuitry 😊
I have this set up except through my pc with no interface between.....and the worst thing about this, unless I'm missing something, is that once you get all of your stuff in place...the only way to adjust the volume of the sub is on the back of the sub itself. It doesn't change with the volume control on the monitors.....so if you're bumping something loud and have the sub set perfect.....as soon as you roll the volume off your monitors the sub just keeps kicking at the loud volume. Any solution to this? Any way to have the sub roll off with the volume knob on the monitors? If I adjust the volume on the pc then the whole signal to both monitors and sub reduces and it stays balanced....I just like using the volume control on the monitors I guess.
Is RCA better vs TRS? what should we setup the low pass bass, tremble on the studio monitors speakers, the sub, if we have say an asgard amp? thx for the help!!
can you show the connectivity of all the components in its entirety instead of just explaining where everything should go and moving around the various cables?
Idk if this will get seen but left and right have to be the same on audio interface and sub right? Like left connected to left and right connected to right?... right?
For those that may have been even more confused by this dude's info on balanced/unbalanced cables... TRS cables, by definition, are balanced and likewise, RCA cables, by definition, are unbalanced.
@@EdwardSmithMusic As I understand it, the TRS and TS cables are interchangeble (both will work, and with no damage to equipment) but if the devices at both ends have TRS connections it's recommendable to use TRS cables (particularly with any long distances) due to the undesirable noise accummulation on unbalanced (TS) cables. Where one or more devices are unbalanced, it's a waste of money investing in TRS cables. And perhaps it is overkill putting TRS connectors on a cable which is shorter than 1 metre anyway, unless it's for stereo purposes, which is another story.
@@Zoco101 I had issues with my studio monitors using unbalanced cables. I have JBL Pros, and they did not like them one bit. Was getting a loud humm as soon as the cable was plugged in, even with nothing plugged in on the other side. 2 different music shops kept telling me TS cables will work, for the $1 or $2 difference in price, i was pretty annoyed having to go all the way back to swap them. (now THAT was a waste of money). The big hint is right on the rear of the speaker. It says "Balanced", so you need a balanced cable. From what i remember, the receiving port in the speaker has 3 contact points, 2 of them become bridged when using TS cables, hence why I was getting noise. Your milage may vary.

I'm getting terrible audio from my turntable setup and bad feedback at higher volume. Any advice what I should change/upgrade. TT >RCA >Cheap Pre-Amp>RCA to TRS > Powered Yamaha MSP5 I'm thinking adding an A.I to replace the pre-amp and adding a sub to help when playing louder, from watching this it seems my wiring could be an issue too tho?
When connecting the from the sub output to the speakers, would you actually connect one cable to each of the two speakers, i.e., right output to right speaker and left output to left speaker? The video showed connecting left and right outputs to one speaker.
the speakers he's using has the power amp for both speakers only in one of them, so he'll run speaker wire to the other speaker. It's dependent on what speakers you have. They aren't all this way. Typically smaller speakers use this setup.
how does the low-pass filter work? If my speakers reproduce 80 Hz - 22 kHz (M-Audio BX3BT), I set it to 80 Hz? What does this do? Does the subwoofer only send the frequencies higher than 80 Hz to the monitors? Why is there also a High Pass Filter at 80 Hz, does it do the same thing or something else? Also, if the subwoofer has Bluetooth, then the monitors don't need bluetooth, right, since they receive the full signal from the sub? Also, how do you know what frequency your are setting on the LPF, because the tags on the lines are not aligned, and it doesn't seem to be linear??
Got the Presonus Eris 3.5 along with the Eris Sub8 to listen to music on my PC. Connected to my NUC 10 i5FHN and the noise is unbearable. So I'm running a pair of Eris 4.5s through my pioneer ddj400, and Im looking into buying the Eris Sub8. Would I need to buy an audio interface + TRS cables in order for the sub to work? Or would I just need the 4 TRS cables to connect my ddj400 to the sub then from the sub to the 4.5s?
I've got a pair of eris 5 xt with an audient id4 audio interface. This setup works well with my ddj400, because I dont have to touch any audio cables when I want to use my dj controller. I want a set of speakers to hook to my PC, I'm thinking the Eris 3.5 and if I ever decide I need bass punch, I may get the sub later. Do you think an audio interface is worth it? Is the signal from the PC good enough? Thanks.
An audio interface is definitely worth it… reduces lag and latency for days 💪🏻
@@EdwardSmithMusic hey man, thanks for your videos. I bought the Eris 3.5. They sound great. I don't need more bass.
Hi Edward, how do i connect this subwoofer to the audient Nero i just bought? Just plug a TRS Jack from the SUB out on the back to the Audient Nero ( Monitor Controller) in the Left IN TRS of the Presonus Sub? Thank you if you can answer. I cant find anything about this metter on the web. How actually connect a Sub to the Audient Nero Sub connection out.
Have you gotten the chance to mix on this type of setup and if so what ere the results? Thanks in advance
i know someone directly associated with presonus and their clients mix and master on these all the time, and have had no issues at all
Hi, nice to watch the setup. Can i connect 100 watt speaker to Tascam US 2x2 HR interface with lap top?
Greetings.
Man i just recently bought a subwoofer, the gibbon 10 from monkey banana. Im having troubles connevting it to my monitors (same brand)... usually i use them with my pioneer controller. Do i really need to get a interfaz or mixer? Or can i still use the controller?
Nothing to do with the subwoofers, but where did you get that grey square/diamond wall feature from? Looks very nice and simple
Using 4 trs cables can I connect the sub to audio interface and both monitors? Or is it just into a single monitor?
Any advice to mitigate ground loop noise with the exact same connection?
In the Eris 3.5, what would be the ideal configuration -for you- with this sub? :)
I just got one and it is wonderful, but I would like to know your opinion.
Thanks, great video!
the sub8 is going to compliment those speakers...its bass as good as a mid range and sub will back up the low end...
I am looking for a tutorial which shows how to adjust the subwoofer / monitors in regards of Split frequency, phase and levels. Can you help?
Will I need an audio interface to connect everything together?
I have a pair of presonus e5 xt and I want to connect them to Edifier T5 subwoofer. Is it compatible? Or would there be any problem? Please reply ASAP. I will subscribe
Heyy great video! But i have a question i have krk rokit studio monitors and a focusrite but i have a 10s krk sub a older one. Do you think it is possible to use xlr from the monitors to the sub. And than from the sub trs balanced to the focusrite. Is this gonna work??
So if I was going to connect my multi effects unit to this, instead of an audio interface (my pod go basically is an audio interface) I would just plug the cables into the pod go the same why you plug them into the audio interface?
Hello Edward, do you recommend those Peachtree stands for these monitors? Or you think there might be a better match? Thanks!
I think they are a cool fit haha
@@EdwardSmithMusic jajja Just got these monitors and love them. Your reviews helped lots. Thank you ⭐
Great! Question. How do you setup a temblor with a mackie big knob passive? Interface goes to mackie, mackie goes to monitors right now.
I'm getting terrible audio from my turntable setup and bad feedback at higher volume.
Any advice what I should change/upgrade. TT >RCA >Cheap Pre-Amp>RCA to TRS > Powered Yamaha MSP5
I'm thinking adding an A.I to replace the pre-amp and adding a sub to help when playing louder, from watching this it seems my wiring could be an issue too tho?
When connecting the from the sub output to the speakers, would you actually connect one cable to each of the two speakers, i.e., right output to right speaker and left output to left speaker? The video showed connecting left and right outputs to one speaker.
the speakers he's using has the power amp for both speakers only in one of them, so he'll run speaker wire to the other speaker. It's dependent on what speakers you have. They aren't all this way. Typically smaller speakers use this setup.
@@braedenlane why on earth wouldnt he mention that, ay yi yi
@@theStepFamm yes hes not that good in explaining Im pretty sure hes new in audio engineering haha
Nice video but I would recommand that you compare the same song with and without subwoofer.
how does the low-pass filter work?
I respect the strength it takes to lift this sub onto a table lol. That thing is heavyy
Got the Presonus Eris 3.5 along with the Eris Sub8 to listen to music on my PC. Connected to my NUC 10 i5FHN and the noise is unbearable. Upgraded all cables and power supplies as recommended by Presonus and it's still filthy. Will an interface or DAC clear this up? Am only using the set up for listening, no recording at this time.
Wow. That's interesting. An interface could be the solution you need.
same problem, did you fix it?
@@Smokey-A No.
I'm sure the problem is in the NUC or associated software.
Speakers sound awesome when connected to any other input source.
Pisses me off.
Specifically bought these to go with my new PC.
spent enough extra on the assorted cables that I didn't want to waste any more on an interface. Will save up and just buy a separate streaming device.
I have Mackie Cr-3s but I am interested in the PreSonus Sub as I am looking for a more compact sub due to space requirements. Is that possible without an audio interface? Also is there any drawbacks to not getting a Mackie sub?
Will the power switch on the stereo speakers also power off the sub?
Nope
@@EdwardSmithMusic Damn that’s really annoying. Don’t really want to have to crawl under my desk to turn off the sub every time that I want to switch to headphones.
@@profblack I haven't bought my subwoofer yet but for that I'm probably going to plug it into a smart outlet and have it controlled by app because I understand that crawling under my desk thing
@@JLummin That’s one of the solutions that I was thinking of too. There are also some outlet extensions with a separate foot operated switch that you can get so that’s another route.
How do you connect these speakers to a small subwoofer when the sub only has one RCA input? How would the connection work then?
0:11 ... the most youtuberish intro EVER
I only have to plug in the usb cable of the controller into my pc. This makes connecting the controller hasslefree and prevents longterm damage on the audio equipment
Great videos as always.
Please post a video connecting the pioneer dm 40's and presonus 8 subwoofer to a pioneer ddj400, using a laptop.
Thanks in advance.
?
sub? was just gona upgrade to kali lp 8's?🤔nah glenn sold me on bigger kali monitors. i always wondered(without haveing a sub) how this connection was possible with no rca's. 🤘🏻🍻
Do I use High pass filter with my Eris 3.5 Or Low Pass Filter ?
What do you mean balanced? Meaning each cable is mono?
TRS cables… they have a tip, ring and sleeve
how does connecting via bluetooth work? do i still need an interface for that?
Hey, how I can connect it without audio interface directly into PC? I have BT version of Eris 3.5. Will playing music from Phone via BT work with subwoofer?
Thanks I'm a new subscriber and I love your vids
Thank you so much for watching!!
I have an audio interface, Scarlett 2i2, and Yamaha 5 hs audio monitors, I found a sub woofer to buy, but the sub woofer has 2 inputs and 2 Rca outputs only, would it be possible to use an Rca to Back cable adapter Trs , to connect the Scarlett interface via the cable with Rca adapter to the sub woofer? to also connect the three cables from the Yamaha 5 hs monitor, with Rca adapter trs to the sub woofer? I'm from Brazil, I speak through Google Translate, forgive me for any writing errors, please friend help me with this issue
I couldn’t see how you connect both of the studio monitors to the subwoofer can you describe how to please? thanks.
Do the personus Eris e3.5 come with all of the Jack cables?
@Edward Smith one question... Can i directly connect from my tv to sub+monitor... I mean to say, can i exclude audio interface...
Hey bro .. I have JBL 104 Monitors & a Presonus Audio Interface ..!
When i Use RCA(JBL) To Headphones(AudioInterFace) , it Sounds very Loud But When I use TRS(JBL) To TRS(AudioInterFace) it Sounds Very Low.. Almost Half Of RCA To Haedphones
What Is The Reason ? Please Reply
ok, how would i connect 2 JBL LSR305's and a Logan Martin Dynamo 300 subwoofer into my Laptop? I know I need an interface, but the monitors use 1/4" and the sub uses coaxial/LFE. My sub doesn't let you connect the monitors to it.
You will need to get an Audio Interface
@@EdwardSmithMusic do you know of a cheap option that will allow 2 monitors and 1 subwoofer?
Hi I am using a presonus eris 3.5 monitors is it possible to connect the subwoofer to the monitors without an audio interface and can I use any subwoofer or must it be eris sub8 ?
I have the same question
hey i need your help, based on your videos i decided that i want to buy Mackie CR4-X for my PC,mby in near future i will buy also Mackie CR8S-X BT. But now question is because i want plug them to PC, i have optical input , aux 3.5 and the restinput for 5.1 as i see are 3.5 jack. Iis it will be possible that those speakers will fit or i must buy sound card or something else?
My motherboard on PC is Asus z170 Pro gaming.
Thanks for help and @Edward thanks for your videos and content!
Your speakers will fit perfectly. You will connect these via the RCA to aux cable connection. No soundcard required!
