L'ho ascoltata dal Maestro dal vivo. Non si può spiegare: cristallo! E acqua! Un "canto" che tintinnava nell'anima. Che incredibile fortuna aver potuto ascoltare quel concerto!

I studied piano with Aldo Ciccolini for many years here in Italy. I therefore say quite clearly that he was a great man, a passionate teacher and one of the greatest pianists of all time.

The beauty of Satie. So open to interpretation. So little ink on the staves, it allows the performer to infuse their soul into the music. So little, yet so, so, so, SO much happening with every single note. Absolute beauty.

I interpret the piece as the flight of the soul. The bass is the earth, beckoning the soul to stay. The melody is the whimsy of the soul's departure, seeing the future, and making the transition to the "other side of the flowers".

  • @ironpirites

Very interesting interpretation. It is almost lively when compared to some other versions. This is such a beautifully realized composition that it can support different tempos and still speak beautifully. I think that Sig. Ciccolini's version is probably what one would have heard in a salon in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Slower tempos strike me as being 20th century appropriate, more resigned and sad.

Satie's score says 'lent et douloureux', which translates to 'slow and painful'.
Reinbert de Leeuw's 1977 performance of the piece comes closest to this. It is certainly unlike any other version you've probably heard. Though some may prefer his 1992 re-recording.

I first heard Ciccolini when I was a teenager centuries ago, where he played Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #11. Happy to see he's still at it. I don't think this is played too fast--although I wouldn't blame him if he was in a bit of a rush. Anthony Burgess called Satie's stuff 'furniture music', and I can understand what he means. Ciccolini probably finds it boring compared to the classical masters.

@burkea123 No offence, I just disagree. I think it's much more beautiful if it is slower than this. I think when the first right hand part comes in people tend to speed up the left hand so that they can keep that rhythm, but when it can be done slowly and that rhythm can be kept its wonderful. I admit, it is not easy to do (for me). Even when I play with a metronome that right hand part sounds funny sometimes.

This may just be me, but it sounds a bit too slow in my opinion, it lacks motion, I feel like there needs to be a bit more push and pull in the repeating melody of the song.

+docarii yes its beautiful isn't it? I saw Reinbert de Leeuw last month and he plays Satie so perfectly in sink with the person Satie was. An outsider, excentric and a avant garde person in his time. Ans he plays it so slow, you get drawn in. everybody in the audience is on a different planet!

    • @kallenijs

The first times hearing this music, you might think 'this needs to be played as slow as humanly possible'. And some (melodramatic) pianists play it like this. You can find plenty of slow version of this song on RUclips.
Later on I hope you come back to Aldo (especially his old renditions of this piece) and enjoy the pace. This strange, sad music, for slow, contemplative moods - played expertly at pace, like the world that doesn't stop turning.

I don't see the naked Greeks, I'm hearing a piece written by Parisian contemporary of Debussy. Context is everything. Exquisite mastery from Maestro Ciccolini. Such color and sensitivity. Breathtaking, unless you're a literal minded fool.
