Guitarist Gary Green was 24 here. He was 19 or 20 when he joined the band. He didn't read music but was a fast learner. Amazing guitarist, amazing band.
Ray Shulman, one of my all time favorite BEST BASSISTS EVER! Incredible musician, perfect timing. His bass lines are so intricate, melodic, intense & beautiful. 1st time I heard HIS LAST VOYAGE, to this day it’s a stellar masterpiece. No one sounds like Ray… he’s one of a kind.. I was lucky to see GENTLE GIANT IN SEATTLE in the early 70’s.
Of the wretchedly miniscule handful of live performances caught on film of our lads, this is my very favorite. One of you younger Shulmans comforted my distress over this oversight not so long ago by saying that there must be some 16mm footage somewhere that has yet to be unearthed from those Italian and German tours when Phil was still very much a part of it all...and I keep hoping against hope (as you Brits like to say) that this is indeed the case. Such a thing actually did come to pass with the similarly talented and even more unsung Greenslade in the form of two stitched-together performances, "live in the studio" from 1973 at the Old Grey Whistle Stop, an absolute gem. Let's just keep on hoping that such a thing will come to light before the last of our cohort shuffles off this mortal coil, shall we? I think I'll dig that item up, since it might buoy our hopes, and because the die hard Giant fanbase will probably remember those lads with kindness as well... Found it! And it's cued to "Melange," the song where Tony Reeves plays the most melodic "lead bass," accompanied by the twin keyboards of Dave Greenslade and Dave Lawson and the amazing Andrew McCulloch on drums: ruclips.net/video/U8NBCFO3GtI/видео.html
It is the best by far. There are some rare moments from Canterbury scene that are on the same level, but all-around this is the band. It is unique, complex, beautiful, philosophical.
Just wondering what happened the vinyl release of Civilian. It's now mid September and we're still waiting. Only the CD version and the MP3 appear to be available.
The greatest most epic legendary genius unique criminally underated band ever.
Never underrated, only under appreciated. Millions upon millions of people have never heard of Gentle Giant.
PINK Floyd
Pink floyd completely overrated and most of their music is too depressing gentle giant kicks their ass

I recently found their album Civilian and listened to it almost daily for a few months. Absolutely epic album.
God I love Ray’s bass tone.
And never not amazing. Truly one of the greatest that ever lived.
Does anybody know what pick he is using? Felt bass pick or maybe a heavy guitar pick?

Sounds like you know Gary. I play with him… fast learner? We try to keep up!😅✌️
Absolute geniuses, the lot of them! God, music was so much better back in the day!
RIP Ray! Most talented and creative live rock band ever.
May their cogs keep turning forever.
Bassists need to start using a new term to describe utmost joy while playing difficult time signatures...let's call it "Rayface". 🤩
RIP Ray 🖤❤️🖤❤️
John Weathers is the beast of the drumming world
Unsung genius
RIP Ray, I could watch that bass face all day, makes me smile every time!

Oh no, I didn't realise he'd passed away. So sad, my favourite bass player, and musician for that matter. RIP you genius.

GG made the '70s a very special decade!

I think that was polyrhythmic before it locked in. Still haven't quite figured it out.
They never got the recognition and subsequent filthy lucre they deserved. R.I.P Ray, thanks GG for the musical adventures in the land of Oz. Love.

Masterpiece, baroque and Roll, GG amazing !!!
Fantastic musicians, how they are not as well known as other so called prog rock bands like King crimson, Genesis or yes is a mystery to me
