The formed flange face (the raised inner face) will be compressed against the corresponding side of the mating flange, so the material will be always in compression once the flange is closed. The paste grade materials used for this application have a high enough compressive strength for the compressive force and torque applied in fairly high pressure lines.

There is no minimum depth Emma just the correct surface prep is enough for the application as seen in the video good machining or grit blast to 3 mil would be the best. That is enough to get the adhesion for application.
