Recently moved from Vancouver to Winnipeg and started ice fishing this winter. Planning to do some open water fishing for the first time this spring. I live near the Assiniboine River in this same area, and your video has me excited to try it out. Thanks!

Fished that river system lots! Weight and worm or bobber and worm works very very well

Ive never caught on bobber although ive only tried a few times. Where I was the currrent would just carry it away so wondering how people do that here?

@@cocoleti4474 slip bobber rig works the best. Done it lots at lockport and seine River. Cast it up stream and let it float down. You’ll catch crazy amount of goldeye and drum with odd catfish

Where abouts is this fishing spot? Way better than Kildonan Park. :)

I appreciate those that do not throw the fish in the water but gently let them go...you're close enough to the water to be gentle letting them go rather than throwing:(

He's a few feet up from the waterline. And if he steps down, he'll sink up to his waist in the mud.

What kind of tackle set up should I use to fish the Assiniboine River in this area? (I live close to the park in your video). I'm new to fishing, and a staff member at a fishing shop suggested a pickerel rig with a weight and worms. Are you just using a worm on a hook? Thanks for any advice you can provide to this rookie.

A pickerel rig, weight, and night crawlers will work just fine.Have fun fishing!

@@JJTFishing I have a question for you if you don't mind. I tested out the pickerel rig, weight, and worms this morning. I noticed the weight doesn't seem to hold my line and rig down in the water. After I cast, the river pushes the line to the shore pretty quickly. However, while watching videos on RUclips, I saw people cast their rig and weight and just let it sit on the bottom until something bites. Am I doing something wrong:? Do I need a heavier weight? Thanks for helping this rookie out.

Spring currents are pretty strong. You may need a heavier weight. The set up I used is called a Lindy Rig.
