    Further information:
    How to fly to Corsica:
    With Air Corsica from London Stansted to Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi. All 3 cities have train stations. Air Corsica also flies to Figari
    With British Airways from London Heathrow Terminal 5 to Bastia. BA also flies to Figari
    Many other airlines offer seasonal flights from airports across Europe
    Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi are also connected to mainland Europe by ferry services and Corsica is a popular stop for cruises.
    The rail network serving the island of Corsica is one of Europe’s most scenic railways,
    Tickets can be bought:
    at the station on the day of travel or the day before
    on-board (no credit card/debit card payment on board)
    Travellers can also stop at a station and take the next train. Do check timetables when you get at the station
    If you only have time for a day trip, consider the central part of the railways network
    Or why not travel across the island with the Pass Libertà for 7 days of unlimited travel for just €50

    They've certainly modernised the trains since I travelled on that railway over 20 years ago. However, what the old ones lost in the way of creature comforts, they gained in charm, rattly old things that they were. In any event, it's a truly wonderful thing; part transport, part roller coaster and part scenic trip. The bridges and viaducts are wonderful things, even if you don't actually travel on the train itself. When I did it, we were mostly trekking across the island.

      What a wonderful experience it must have been James. Thanks for watching and sharing. I think that some of the old rail stock is still used in parts of the network. I'd love to go again

    I took this train ride 40 yrs ago.I was in my early 20,s. A friend and myself ran the GR20 in 6 days.. We left a bacpack at Vizzavona to pick up as we went thru.. Stayed in the refuge huts.. Thanks for the video... brings back so many memories..The GR 20 is an amazing walk/hike/run..

      Wow that's a fantastic experience and I bet the train was quite different then (I am sure the ride was as bumpy). Congratulations for your track on the GR20!!!

      It's a stunning island. The low cloud cover blocked the view of the highest peaks. I'd love to do that trip again (on a brighter day) - on the other hand enjoying the train ride through the snow was really special.Are you based in the UK?

      Cheers guys. Corsica is a truly stunning destination. It's so mountainous and the coast is superb. The low cloud cover blocked some of the views - on the other hand it was so nice to travel through forests covered in snow. Thanks for watching and happy travels!!!

    I would recommend experiencing the Corsican railways as part of any journey to this rugged and unspoiled island.
    Day trip to enjoy the scenic views or buy a multi day pass to experience the entire network, discover the Northern coastline and the train stopping service along the Balagne region beaches. Hop on and off the train for hikes. So many great options. Incredible value too

      that should be a great time to do. The island is a bit quieter. Easy to do it as a day trip. After arriving in Corte, I headed to the old Town, had a nice lunch. Visited the fortress and a museum before taking a train back to Ajaccio (arriving in time for a late dinner). Would loe t hear about your experience. Hope you enjoy

    I did not realise that Corsica had such magnificent scenery, and actually visible from the train- compare with British trains with seats alongside window pillars and views obscured by trackside trees. Very informative video.

    • @Speedbird1FLY
      @Speedbird1FLY  6 лет назад

      Yes it's a stunning scenery. Rugged, mountainous, wild... bear in mind the low cloud cover, the highest peaks were hidden by the clouds. With a clear view, it would have been even more dramatic.
      The windows offered great view - large and curved. Like in the UK, there were many trackside trees, the lines crosses different forest (with very tall pine trees!)I published a video about a British train you may be familiar with... the Gerald of Walesruclips.net/video/pMoRo8CZH1gH/видео.htmlope you enjoy the ride.Thanks for watching and sharing your nice feedback. Really appreciated

    The regional government has vague plans to restore the line down the east coast from Casamozza to Portovecchio. It was destroyed by WW2 fighting only a few years after completion, but Portovecchio's population has more than doubled since malaria was eradicated. Gradients are easier than on the main Bastia-Ajaccio line. There could even be extensions to Bonifacio, at Corsica's southern tip, or to the airport at Figari.

      @@HobartBloke you're right I read about it. I seriously doubt it will ever be built

    • @HobartBloke
      @HobartBloke 4 месяца назад

      @Speedbird1FLY More likely that branches will be built to the airports at Bastia and Ajaccio. At least the existing network's future looks secure. It almost got the axe in the early 1970s.

    • @Speedbird1FLY
      @Speedbird1FLY  4 месяца назад

      @@HobartBloke that would be a nice addition. I am glad that such great train lines were kept in Corsica. I have been as far as Bastia from Ajaccio. Never tried the branch line on the North west coast

    I like to go to Corsica this summer. But I like to go by train only. On the internet they advice to go by car. But now I see you can hop on and off at many places, is that correct?
    I don't think you miss out a lot if you only travel by train?

    • @Speedbird1FLY
      @Speedbird1FLY  Месяц назад +1

      It's still warmish on the coast but more changeable. Cooler inland especially in higher altitudes. Mind you I am considering October for next year as you bag a few bargains on the seasonal flights that still operate then! Thanks for watching

    • @Speedbird1FLY

      Hi, I haven't but on my list 😎 have you tried it? one clarification. I didn't say it's THE best , certainly part of a list of top train journeys in Europe and regularly featured in articles as such. I also did a videos on the Bergen to Oslo, and Belgrade to Bar. Both stunning. The only downside of my trip in Corsica was the low cloud cover. Thanks for watching

    Isn't there a special "tourist train" that only stops in the major towns? 2.5 hours from Ajaccio to Corte is too long.
