The Amerika had something new in interior design then the Willem Ruys in a later generation had something new in exterior design with bridge far back and the lifeboats much lower than on other ships. When you know about the Willem Ruys you can see her influence on later ships.

Great to see this ship, sick of the Olympic class and all the crap that people write about them. I saw this ship many a time and passed her at sea a few times. Show some more if you can. Oranje, Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam. Groete. Ex Brit seaman. Oh, I love Will Glahe too!

MS, not SS. You can sea one diesel engine in the video and ms is written in the bell.

I wonder if the mermaid staircase was still in place after the Willem Ruys became the Achille Lauro. In the novel "The Poseidon Adventure" there's mention of the staircase descending to the dining room. I wonder if author Paul Gallico, who was quite an ocean liner traveler, got the idea for the Poseidon's staircase from the one on the Willem Ruys.

No. The ship that was inspired for the book was the Queen Mary, & the interiors were base off the Queen Mary.

This ship was bought by Italy and renamed Achile lauro (sp?), hijacked by PLO then caught on fire while cruising the coast of Africa.
