For those asking why Macron is standing still - he is simply being respectful. As the leader of France, he cannot return the salute to members of a different country's armed forces. But he can gracefully accept one. What's more important, however, is if you look closely at the full livestream, you will see the French CDS (Chief of Defense Staff) returning the salutes. It is tradition in most militaries around the world to return the salutes of members from allied/friendly militaries. It is a great display of friendship, as well as a lesson in international traditions.
if I'm not mistaking, the French president doesn't return the salute, even though he's the chief of the military, because he isn't in the military, he is a civilian and has no operative role in the military. may also have a significance that the army serve the country, not the president. The president is only there to receive the salute for the country.

In France, the civilian authorities (from the Président down) never salute the armies, as the philosophy is "to make the public understand that the army serves the authorities, and not the other way round". Also, as a point of "protocol" if you like, to be able to salute the army you would need to be in uniform. Hi! We have a very different mentality here (France). We believe that everybody must be treated equals to the rest. Therefore no accommodation is possible. The same sh!t everywhere, uniformily applied, ensures that nobody tries to make themselves go "oh, look at me, I'm so special". Moreover, we have a strict separation of religion and State. No one can serve two masters at the same time. You can, of course, practice your religion and be proud of it, it's your strictly PRIVATE, PERSONAL business, nothing wrong with that. But if you apply to a government job you must SHOW you're STRICTLY NEUTRAL (you can however sport or show a distinctive religious sign on the condition it is discrete, usually some necklace thing). Sikhs and Muslims in France have a much more better life that in the countries they originally came from, so France is treating their Sikhs and Muslims much better than, say, Mother India. France, like the rest of Europe, suffered for centuries of religious war between the Catholics and the Protestants. They each dressed differently bc each one wanted to show off they were "God's chosen people" by dressing differently. It took several centuries for a gradual peaceful mindset to emerge, whereby "from now on, everybody dresses the same, so there is no difference among us and nobody can point to someone and say "hey, look at him/her, he/she is a X, Y, Z, let's kill him/her!". That's the fundamental reason we in Europe don't want Muslims wearing hijabs and other religious signs. Let me point out to you that (1) Muslims have been treating their European host countries very poorly, causing trouble everywhere; and (2) According to Indian activists and the Indian press themselves, India is currently treating their own religious minorities poorly too (this includes Christians). We have no lessons to learn from India on religious tolerance. Quite the other way round.
The French position is unambiguously clear : you are a French citizen or you are not. That you are a Sikh, Muslim, Christian, atheist, a communist, a capitalist, that you believe the Earth is flat or whatever is a private matter. What is expected from civil servants is that they serve everyone equally and neutrally, not that they display their personal beliefs, which nobody gives a sh!t about. Everybody is free to worship whatever they want as soon as they don’t impose it on others. That’s basic humility and respect. Now, do you really want us to discuss how various countries treat their ethnic and religious minorities compared to France?
