  • CubCrafters now offers a nosewheel option for the company's flagship CC-19 XCub Aircraft, popularly called the NX Cub. In this video, Jim Richmond (CubCrafters founder) explores the Idaho backcountry in the late summer of 2020 with Ben Hodges and Mike Sasser, each flying one of the company's new nosewheel-equipped NX Cubs. Basing out of Morgan Ranch (02ID) and surrounded by the incredible Frank Church River Of No Return Wilderness Area, this video features these new aircraft in some of the most interesting and challenging terrain Idaho has to offer.

      Yes, the NX Cub can be purchased as an IFR airplane and legally flown under instrument flight rules. The pathway for this is through our Builder Assist program, certified as an EAB, with IFR flight allowed in the aircraft's operating limits issued by the FAA. The current most popular IFR package based on Garmin's G3X system, with GNC-355 GPS Com, G5 backup Attitude, GTX-345R ADS-B in/out transponder, and a GMC 305 autopilot. 1:00 The nosewheel configuration clearly doesn't sacrifice ground agility in a meaningful way! There would be circumstances where that freakishly tight turning circle that tailwheels offer would be useful, but if you've landed in a place that makes such maneuverability necessary to taxi without crashing, you probably shouldn't have landed there in the first place in my opinion. I really like this aircraft, would love to own one someday.

    Can someone remind me again what the advantage of a nose wheel is on a bush two seater??? I mean come on.. if you like trikes cos they are easier to fly and you don’t need the strength or increased utility of conventional gear, then a cub is not for you in the first place.

    • @cubcrafters
      @cubcrafters  4 года назад +8

      Yes, it's easier to fly, but it's also better performance, especially STOL performance. More AOA sooner for ~30% shorter takeoffs, and then more effective braking for as much as 50% shorter landings. As designed, it is just as strong as conventional gear, it meets the same structural criteria and passes the exact same certification tests as the tailwheel version of the aircraft. Perhaps not the romance of a tailwheel Cub, but a lot more utility for most missions and pilots.

    • @lurking0death
      @lurking0death 3 года назад

      Okay, a cub is not for me. You are right. But a trike is....why would you flirt with ground looping a light Carbon Cub at $400,000 and some change per copy? Fine aircraft, if you fly in dead calm.

      @@SJNazif Since you have no idea who I am that seems like an odd comment. I gave about 30 hours of dual instruction to two different pilots in the NX cubs in the backcountry, including off airport operations, and I have given about 100 hours of backcountry instruction to pilots with the TW version. The NX does well, but the TW performs better as it can achieve a higher AOA for takeoff and gets off shorter.
