I love the look of the torn paper for the environment!
Perfect! It's a new thing I've been trying. Other games with similar visuals use it and I wanted to see if I could make it work :D
Waterfall looks awesome! I love that it almost feels like a curtain rather than real water it really suits the game ^^
Good! :D
I also really like the waterfall as it is!
Yoo, I just stumbled over this. I get really big tearaway vibes, which was one of my favourite games on the PSVita.
Keep it up, the game looks really promising!
So glad you stumbled over here! Big tearaway vibes :D Same for me, I played it on my PSVita when I moved to a new city so its got a special place in my heart.
Thanks a lot Cyklanlps! :)
Imma just say, this looks dope and I can't wait to try it! Keep it up and don't give up!
I really appreciate that! I'm very motivated after reaching this milestone.
This is inspiring me to make my own 3d platformer like this!
@@ortopediatria5185 I was making a fps platformer but my hard drive got corrupted lol
Looks like such a fun game! Really enjoying the devlogs so far. You don't often see games as far along as this on RUclips, so kudos for making this much progress🔥
Thanks a lot Brandon! It really means a lot that you like the devlogs, I personally feel like I've grown over the past videos (months) in how I edit and present it all. Well I don't have plans on stopping so we might see the entire project to the finish line :D
That water is so creative, do it in the final game!!!
Oh I will! Thanks :D I want to have more of this, to make it move around!
This is a tiny thing but its been present in a lot of videos now, your SSAO settings are really aggressive! I think you could really improve the feel of the art if you tone it down a bit so it isn't adding mud and noise to all your assets. A good example is the scrolls at the base of the waterfall, those are just covered in SSAO artifacts. I think your art looks great, and this would let it shine even more
I will try that! Thank you for mentioning it, there's so much when making games haha!
this video deserves WAY more attention than it has i really cant wait to play this game. Keep up the good work man!
haha thank you so much Izzy :D Hopefully it'll be picked up and shown to more people!
You could make that dev tool thing that shows collectibles a little feature. Maybe after finding enough of a certain collectible, you can unlock a tool that helps you find the closest collectible(maybe like a magnet or something haha?)
Hmm, I kinda like that idea!
I'm so in love with how this looks. Kevin is one of the best humans that ever lived and to see his game much such quick progress puts a huge smile on my face. MISS YOU, KEV!
You guys are just the best
Really cool devlog! I love that waterfall. I think it's great that you decided to redesign the demo level instead of keeping something you did not like. It means more work for sure, but it's for the best! Eager to watch the next devlog.
Thanks a lot! I hope it will be better in the long run with the re-design! :)
This game actually looks sick AF.
Appreciate it, feels good to have reached this point!
the water full looks very outstanding!! the cave to the waterfall, is just pro level design there!
Thanks a lot! I hope it turns out fun :D
Really nice work Kev! Everything seems to be coming along nicely, the game is looking really pretty! That thumbnail alone shows that.
I really liked the tool you showed at the end for a quick way to layer paper above each other, its great for showing depth like you mentioned! Also seems it could be used for a fun floating leaves kinda thing where players have to jump between them :)
Thanks a lot Saul! Yeah the game is taking steps forward.
Yeah I'm surprised the layered paper could possibly be used for more than just that decoration :D
I love the way you did the water! So cool!
Definitely one of the coolest devlogs to be watching this year. Keep it up Kev! Can’t wait to see how you keep progressing!
You have no idea how happy this comment made me! A wide smile on my face!
@@WhyKev definitely gonna keep watching till you finish bro. That's why I'm subbed!
Looking great!! I love the comparison from block-out to finished level at the start. You've made some insane progress lately, keep it up man!
ahh right?! I've been trying to hook the viewer more in the beginning! Thanks a lot friend
I love what you've done so far! I personally love the way you did the waterfall and the water in general! You've got a great base for the game so I'm excited to see how you mix and match these mechanics in future levels!
Thanks a lot Plabs! Yeah it feels great to have this foundation for the game now!
Love it! It's always amazing to see the progress from blockout to actual 3D models and you did an amazing job! That stack script at the end looks great and it could have so many cool puzzle uses as well, I thought that was it's initial purpose before you explained it ahah
Keep up the good work! :)
haha thank you Phill :D I'm also a big fan of that blockout to finished 3D models progress :)
Love seeing the progress, Kev! Looking forward to giving this one a go!
Many thanks Gogger! Yeah I'm excited for that as well!
What a good dev-log, and big humbled you put so much hustle and work in for Dev-Day!
Oh it's the man himself! Thanks again for playing it and always showing support
This game looks good already. I really love the Chicken's walking animation. It is so cute!
Thanks a lot! Hehe yeah he's quite cute when he runs!
Great devlog, as usual!
Not always guaranteed but I'm glad it lived up to the standard :D
Amazing progress on the game! I love the look of the water and the waterfall.
Thanks Skeffles! It turned out quite alright didn't it? :D
One of the best current devlogs ive seen 👏👏
Hey this comment is going in my positivity folder! Thanks a ton for that!
great devlog again, love the artstyle
Many thanks! I'm quite happy with this one!
This looks amazing!
Thanks a lot Gilbert! :)
Looks really cool, added to wishlist !
You're the best Teddy!
I'm so happy to see your progress, it really shows that you're enjoying your time with the game, it's gonna be fucking dope!!
Oh I'm having a blast! That's the aim with the game :D
excited for this one!!! thank you for sharing ur process!!! hopefully i can play it on my switch one day (-:
Hey I really hope that one day! :)
Great job Kev - really good stuff!
Thanks Thomas! I enjoyed your latest video btw!
Thanks Kevin! Your videos are always an "auto-watch" for me 🎉
keep it up mate, you are doing something very unique :)
Thanks a lot, I kinda get the feeling as well. Hope I can deliver on it :)
The art looks good!
Thanks a ton! :)
Great progress! In my opinion, the waterfall looks interesting already. Have you considered making the water surface tear, almost like a thin sheet of paper, when the player steps on it? That could create an interesting "splash" effect with loose paper pieces.
hmm I wonder if some particle could be used to fake that effect :)
Great progress!!!
Thanks ChickenSoda :D
Holy! just randomly found this. Great work
Very glad that you randomly found it! Thanks a lot :D
The waterfall looks better than just a standard waterfall. V unique and creative!
oh thank you so much!
Wow, love the waterfall and water effect 🤩
Many thanks Octamer! :D
played your demo a while back and i LOVED IT! took a little time to get used to the controls as some things are still a bit clunky iirc, but it was a very enjoyable experience!
Thank you for playing! Glad that you liked it :D That demo is now over a year old, the camera is better and some small details. So hopefully in the end everything is better :D
@@WhyKev Im sure that with your passion and creativity, your game will become very fun! i know the mechanics you impliment and take a lot of time, especially with optimisation, ive been there, keep it up and do take your time!
Love the style the waterfall has!!
Appreciate it, I'm very happy with it!
the paper water is just beautiful!
Thank you so much :D
I got you wishlisted. Been waiting for this for a while.
I really appreciate that Rick!
Hey! Just want to say that I really loved the waterfall!!
Edit: I also loved the water movement too :D :D
haha happy to hear that you liked both :D
Wow looks awesome
Thanks Jake!
your game looks very cool!
Appreciate it Sparkoi!
Awesome!
There he is! The supporter :D
very cool
I like the aesthetic, pretty unique
Thanks a lot! :)
Looking nice :)
Thank you Protek! :)
Great game! I haven't been following the entire development process, but i recollect you saying it makes it to the Nintendo Eshop! This game looks absolutely perfect for that style. Keep up the great work.
Hehe we'll I've released games for Nintendo Switch before but I don't have anything OFFICIAL about PaperKlay for that platform :D
@@WhyKev awesome!
Awesome :D
Thanks :D
This game looks dope.
I probably won't play it as platformers aren't my thing but I do like following devlogs. Can't wait to see more.
Reminds me of mario galaxy level design.
Hey I'll take that anyway Socks :D Thank you for watching my content!
man i am so ready to try this game out
That's really motivating :D
Upon seeing the paper pieces at 6:59 the first thing I think of is put a stem through it and make it a climbable plant.
You know, that's a cool idea, I'll see what I can do with it.
Idea for the water fall: Unrolling 'tubes' of paper cascading over the falls. they can taper down and get smaller as they fall, and at the bottom maybe start the animation/unrolling again? Just a thought. games looks sick.
I'd love nothing more than that :D Maybe in the future when I have more time to go over the visuals!
1:26 you could make the horizontal blue paper roll like object to come out from behind the waterfall, lowering the opacity of the water so that the roll can be seen from behind it.
That is my suggestion if you want to convey the idea that there is something behind that.
oh yeah that's a good idea!
Saw this in my recommended, reminded me of Tearaway, really REALLY nice to see something in that similar style cant wait to see more!
Glad you clicked on it! Tearaway is a great game that I love :D
Funny enough I was part of the original test team, so I am excited to see how this turns out! ^_^ @@WhyKev
@@Moodydata ooh exciting! I have a friend who was a level designer on it (and some other devs have also seen it on twitter) which is fun to hear some stories along the way :) That must've been cool to be a part of the development!
I'm in awe, man! Love the style and am looking forward to seeing this fleshed out completely. I haven't really ever wish listed anything, but I think this deserves it! BTW, just an observation... shouldn't the glider/parachute be turned 90 degrees?
Dude this is a big compliment! Thanks a lot! :)
eeh.. you might be right haha!
It seems like a really cozy game
I hope it will be :)
I like the aesthetic
Thanks
Visually, the game looks great, but I'm disappointed that 3D platformers in general have moved away from the Mario 64-esc momentum based movement for the player character's physics. The reason Mario 64 is special even today is because how how much depth there is in Mario's movement, even down to how he realistically interacts with sloped surfaces both in running and diving states. Mario 64 doesn't just have great platforming, it has great movement in general, all thanks to the physical nature of Mario's movement that makes running around some empty terrain a mechanically engaging experience. There's nothing inherently wrong with a platformer like yours that focuses on level design, but I'd love to see a platformer that nails both the player movement/physics and has great level design.
I appreciate your comment! The good thing is that PaperKlay isn't finished yet, there's still time to add things that I've been thinking about. I do think the big thing PaperKlay is missing from Mario64's movement is the directional jumps like backward jump or side flips. I don't have walljumps but the tripple jump is there. We'll see what I end up with but thank you for bringing this up :)
we love you kevin
Koni you're the best
That layer paper tool is super cool, have you thought of using it in the game for like a plant unfolding from flat into usable platforms?
Oh wow, that's not a bad idea at all. Make plants unfold like that!
Waterfall is awesome :O
Thanks :)
Beautiful atmosphere. I loved the lighting. keep up the good work.
For the waterfall, I didn't get why it looks like papers. Why don't you use a flowmap and water shader?
Thanks a lot! I will :)
I wanted it to look like paper so it would fit in with the visuals where I'm trying to make it look like cardboard/paper/clay and other handcrafted stuff :) So a "normal" water shader would've looked out of place.
Now I see. Anyways the project has so potential. Keep up the good work!@@WhyKev
I think a game like this should have things for both characters to do even if it's not an area specifically built around that character.
Hmm, that's not a bad idea. I'll keep that in mind, see if I can do some fun small extra activities like that!
seeing the waterfall, makes me wonder if shape keys might of worked, I've been making a lot of things in Blender, like my thumbnail character.
Oh that's not a bad idea at all
man your voice reminds me soo hard of HomeReel. its almost identical to his. the only difference is the excitement in your voice and that u stumble over some syllables more often.
anyways. love the game, love the progress, love the direction its goin. Just the way the characters eyes blink freaks me out D-:
haha it could be that I'm not natively an english speaker :D But I can hear what you mean (I looked him up)
Thank you so much, yeah the eyes need fixing!
If there comes a time a physical copy is doable, I'd buy.
I will keep that in mind and do what I can :D
Idk how experienced you are on shaders, but you could displace the waterfall papers strips with either a wave, or maybe even a looping texture that uses uv2 coordinates
I think that's how I would do it, but it was nothing I could whip together that fast..
I played the demo! It's amazing for an in development indie game! I just couldn't find the last 2 blue orbs! Were they related to the white circle buttons that light up? I couldn't figure that part out.
Thanks a lot Josh! Yeah the white circle is like floor is lava. Then another one is hidden in the ceiling of the top building :)
@@WhyKev I'll see what I can do, thanks!! Edit: Got 'em thanks! I love these kind of games! Nice and simple and it's fun to just run around and find everything. No complications, no skill tree, no farming blah blah blah. LOL.
You also may want to turn some of the debug tools into cheat codes.
Chicken Little: The Game
Little Chicken game
A japan inspired level with origami and paper cherry blossoms could be cool. Just wanted to share my idea.
I'm writing that down, that's a very good idea!
Here is a tip I played the demo and you can clip through the ground by ground pounding also the movement doesn't feel smooth enough maybe make the players base speed a little faster
Thank you for taking the time to play it. That demo is now 1 year old and I've done some things to make it feel better. But yeah you can fall through the environment here and there!
is that waterfall.... PEPE THE FROG?!
Well it's... I guess it does have some similar traits :D It wasn't my intent really.
Did you build something similar on PS4 Dreams?
I've never touched PS4 Dreams actually. Looks very cool though!
@@WhyKev it’s a closed platform but very cool. I saw something similar a while back. Not competitive at all with your stuff!
Which game engine do you use? thanks
I'm using Unity, been doing it since 2009.
Will there be health upgrades in the game?
I'm thinking there might be!
Good because I think the game gets harder and harder, the more you make progress. Making it easier to lose health.
1:24 Why don't you just use Godot's soft body physics with some forces generating for the waterfall? Each "strand" of the waterfall would be separate softbody.
I'm not using Godot, but that might've been a good solution!

I get that it's sometimes monotone to make a game (i'm trying to make one) , but i wanna let you know, that you're one of the reasons of why statement that "games aren't fun" is wrong
Woah that's very kind of you to say! I've saved this comment for my "nice comments" folder :D To cheer me up on bad days!
