Bald Eagle Update Feb 2015

  • Bald eagle in Southern Utah recovering from a severe case of lead poisoning, probably from eating jackrabbits that were shot with shotguns and left where the raptors are quick to spot them and eat them, including the lead pellets.
    He came to us a month ago emaciated, extremely week and lethargic. Thanks Don Alger for seeing that he hadn't moved since the day before and reporting him to Martin Tyner of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

    Our Mission
    Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
    Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
    The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
    Informing, Educating and Inspiring
    The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
    Martin Tyner
    Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
    At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
    “One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
    Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
    He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.

    I just want to thank you so much for taking care of such wonderful creatures. You must have a very big heart to do such wonderful things - helping Bald Eagles must be very rewarding in the knowledge you are helping them survive and helping them have happier lives afterwards. Every single eagle you save is a friend of yours for life. I salute you sir!

      It's a little misleading. When an eagle acts calm or tame is it a sign they are not healthy.

    • @shychameleon
      @shychameleon 4 года назад

      Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah True, but since they can’t reach from the neck up, they need another bird to scratch that itch (or preen). Sure, I’ve seen them rub up against something to help with that purpose but if they get itchy enough and develop a guarded trust with a human, I think you can get away with a brief head or neck scratch.

    Thank you for this video. I've been watching live cams of eagles in their natural habitat, and I must say I'm truly amazed at their beauty. There are 2 live cams out of Florida, 1 in PA, and a few others scattered here and there. Seeing the hatching of a few is what really caught my interest; they're very protective of their young. It takes a very special kind of person to do what you're doing by taking care of these glorious creatures - thank you so much, and thank you for your videos! GBU all ~

    I wonder how many people know about my favorite Bald Eagle Challenger!! He is THE most famous bird in the world and goes to sport events. While our National anthem plays, at the same point towards the end, Challenger leaves glove form owner way up above the stadium and SOARS around the stadium, almost as if he knows to soar around and around. The thousands who witness this and know what this bird means to us, goes crazy! Finally, when Challenger lands, he holds up his massive wings as if to pose for us. I cry every single time. He's called, The Most Famous Eagle in our nation. There are many Challenger videos. He's named after the ill dated rocket of the same name and that's pretty darn special.

    I'm late to Martin's party. I've only recently started finding his and Susan's videos but I want to share something with Bald Eagles and one in particular. This Bald Eagle's name is Challenger named after the Challenger disaster. What Challenger does is amazing. Catch one of his videos and he's known as the most famous Bald ever. When you watch what he does, if it doesn't bring tears to your eyes, then you must be a hater of Americans and what this bird represents. I'm sure a lot of you know if Challenger but this is for the many who do not know. When Challenger is released at sporting events, during the national anthem, I cry and so do many others. Look for the most famous American Bald eagle. I'd bet that your chest will swell up with American pride. Challenger, the most famous bird in America. I'm sure Martin and Susan know who he is!!! God bless our national Bald Eagle, my favorite Eagle. Please look for the videos. I promise you will she'd tears.

    So the eagle has a bowl movement for the part that is digested and the casting the remainder of undigested matter in vomit form? Never knew that interesting.

    • @GowildlifeOrg
      @GowildlifeOrg  8 лет назад +8

      +nls8520 That is correct. Any undigested matter is squeezed into a pellet in the bird's gizzard and is then expelled. Thank you for your comment.

    Poor baby! Why can't they make lead bullets illegal!!!?

    • @drewbehr
      @drewbehr 9 лет назад +2

      Lead is the cheapest, and most effective bullet compound. It is heavy, yet it also has excellent expansion properties and terminal ballistics. Rather than lashing out and demanding the Govt. make more laws... Why not try to come up with a similar compound that hunters and shooters can use, that is not toxic. That is the solution. DO IT YOURSELF. If you really want a solution, do some work and figure out the puzzle. Most people that shoot guns love Eagles too.

      Much better when they recover and fly off into the wild for sure.

      It is painful for us to see any sick or injured animal.

    I often understand why many of these birds don't make it in the wild. When the food is available, FLAT OUT HANDED to them (literally) they don't want to eat and actually have the nerve to fly away. I try to feed birds in my yard and they flee from it. On Conan O'Brien's show Conan asked how do they survive in the wild if they fly away from food? Easy, they don't.

    He is very docile, even vocalizing protest to you taking his food, very much close to pet behavior even though I understand he was/is a wild animal? Would not expect a wild animal to act that way .

      Hi HashB, thanks for your interest. The eagle was very sick, so yes, not acting like a wild animal. The beginnings of return to normal behavior is the sign for release.

      Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah Is it possible to train a bald eagle for falconry and successfully hunt with one? Or is that skill mostly reserved for golden eagles?

    • @GowildlifeOrg
      @GowildlifeOrg  7 лет назад

      Yes, a bald eagle can be trained with falconry techniques, but you have to ask this question, "In the wild what is the bald eagles major source of food?" The bald eagle is what is called a Sea Eagle which means a large portion of their diet is fish and also carrion. The golden eagle is a booted eagle, its primary source of food is large rodents and other mammals, and also a lot of carrion. So if you are going to go through all of the trouble to become state and federally licensed so that you may possess and fly an eagle in falconry, the golden eagle is a much better choice, and the only eagle in North America that can be legally used in falconry.

      Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah OK thank you very much. I would like to be a falconer and I thought that perhaps if I were to have an eagle I would choose the bald eagle. But I see now that wouldn't be quite worth the process needed in order to have an eagle in the first place

      Hi Paul, thanks for your interest. Their diet varies according to their habitat. The key is natural foods.

    The Bald Eagle doesn't want to be fed. He wants to hunt. Can't just suppress hundreds of thousands of years of gut instinct.
