    I'm with Carol on this one. There's being a broad church and all that, but then there's accepting an objectively immoral and corrupt person into your party.

    • @TheDandonian
      @TheDandonian 19 дней назад

      Nah, this whole thing is daft. Elphicke is in the party for 6 months, she's not running as an MP at the next election. It's a 2 vote swing to Labour in Parliament right now, which could prove important as the government gets weaker. Painting this as a Labour mistake is Tory spin and it's a shame that Carol and the media in general have allowed Tory spin to make out that a Conservative MP walking on her own government to join Labour, is anything but a nail in the Conservative Party coffin. If she stayed on as a Labour candidate, then we'd have something to complain about but that's not happening.

      Thank you for encapsulating why the Tories are the party of government and Labour are usually whining about it. Being "right" and in opposition is childish nonsense: the western allies welcomed the Soviets to their side after June 22nd 1941 and yet the day before the Soviets were supplying the Nazi with raw materials and intelligence on Aliied shipping. Anything that undermines your opponents is sound strategy and nothing undermines a parliamentary party like floor crossings.

What also annoyed me was the likes of Jonathan Ashworth,Annalise Dodds and Lisa Nandy agreeing with Starmer about Elphicke being welcomed into the party and accepting her apologies.Yet when Nandy was questioned about this on QUESTION TIME by Grace Blakeney and also would the Labour Party welcome back Diane Abbott,Nandy seemed hesitant with her answer.I don’t know if this a big two fingered salute to Sunak or Starmer committing Political suicide!

    My biggest problem with the Labour Party welcoming Nancy Elphicke in is while it might appear to be a dig in the eye for the Tories today, she clearly doesn’t support much of what the Labour Party stand for and could easily flip again, making Starmer look like a bad judge of character.
    It’s also hypocritical because Diane Abbott, the most bullied woman in politics and a true socialist, has been left out in the cold.
    I know it’s politics and this tawdry episode will be forgotten soon, but I feel the fallout from this may not go the way Starmer expects it to.

    There's a lot of serious facepalming going on over elphicke, it was a bad move knowing what she did with regard to her then-husband and the victims of his abuse, there needs to be some serious vetting of any future defections, because this is not a good look for labour at all, even if it was an exercise to embarrass the tories, and in the process of their attempt at smearing, the tories have shone a light on their party's criminal behaviour, it's still not a good look to take on someone who should have ended up in contempt of court had she not been protected by the tory party...

    No, Max, not "to a certain extent" Labour should not be seeking to accept all new comers. Elphicke is a blight on (UK) politics and the sooner she has no career the better. By accepting her in, Starmer has given the impression that they (Labour) want to walk all over the Tories at any cost to their reputation. He should have told her to "no way" and in a press release announced his rejection of her along with his party's reasons.

    Max is entirely correct in his analysis. IMO allowing a neo-fascist into the Labour Party is big mistake. *But this is merely a symptom of Labour morphing into something similar to Cameron's Tory Party 2.0* - and of Labour once more embracing right-wing Neoliberal Economics. This, rather than seeking to move back to the Mixed Economy model once adhered to by both main political parties prior to the arrival of Mrs Thatcher.
    The stated policies which Starmer & Co are proposing to implement once in power will do little to solve or to mitigate the major problems facing our nation, to wit:
    * Sky-high cost of living
    * Low wages
    * Gross inequality
    * Massive deterioration in the rights of workers
    * Massive deterioration in the rights of citizens
    * Sky-high property values
    * UK's inability to export goods and services easily or profitably due to the hard Tory Brexit
    * Crumbling hospital buildings, school buildings, court buildings and prisons
    * Severe lack of affordable housing to buy or to let
    * Crumbling infrastructure (roads replete with pot holes, leaking water pipes, etc)
    * Grossly underfunded and largely privatised NHS with long waiting lists
    * An economy stalling thanks to Brexit and a severe shortage of skilled and unskilled workers
    * The undermining of democracy and democratic accountability thanks to profoundly undemocratic legislation forced through Parliament since 2019 by Patel, Braverman and Cleverly
    In order to properly address all these issues there are only two realistic solutions, namely:
    1) To join the EU once more (of course this is not possible at the present time - not the fault of the Labour Party).
    2) To ompose FAR higher taxation on large and multinational companies. That is the ONLY way to fund the re-building of Britain and to address most of the above issues.
    But Starmer, Reeves and Streeting have made it ABUNDANTLY clear that they are NOT willing to increase taxation on large and multinational companies.
    Of course, Blair's 'New Labour' also embraced Neoliberalism, and Tony Blair strongly believed in the (now widely debunked) theory of 'Trickle-Down Economics' - one of the main pillars of Neoliberal ideology.
    Nowadays, anyone proposing a move back the Mixed Economy model is labelled a 'Far Left Extremist' by such figures as Peter Mandelson, Wes Streeting or Rachel Reeves. This is absurd, of course, but it is what's happening.
