  • There are so many options for Lawn-Alternative cover crops, such as sweet potatoes and peanuts. Jim Kovaleski has planted his whole front yard with cover crops for the Summer. These crops virtually thrive on neglect and when he returns, there will be hundreds of pounds of food to harvest. There have been many questions in regards to the “sea of green” and we answered them for you in this video!

    Using sweet potatoes as a cover crop is a pretty great idea. They are basically disease-proof, the vines are so dense they’ll choke out any weeds, and you’re literally growing food under food. Double your harvest per square foot!

    Comments like that come from people who have no idea what ecosystem is. Kinda like when i was a teenager and wedding and would flip out of there was a spider. Now I appreciate them, because I understand what they do for my garden. Same with the other creepy crawlies. And water moccasins and copperheads aren't too interested in gardens, either. Usually.

    Same in my yard, the sweet potatoes are running wild with the mix of mimosa, the bees are so happy...occasionally I see black snakes and armadillo, never rats or mice, just those pesky squirrels...I only mow a path to the lake for the golf cart and the road frontage...no grasshole here, only my neighbors...still poundin', keeps me young...!

    IDK about snakes Pete, but the insects and spiders here are numerous and I've been living in Florida for just under a month and I feel like I'm bug food. Need to go back to shaking my clothes out before donning them like back in Hawaii. Boy are lawns a BIG thing here too. Even the plant nursery staff give me a weird look when I ask for food plants. I want to do ground covers like Jim has. Need to eliminate some of the grass first.

    I built a food forest in the front yard here in Melbourne, Aus. I didn't get a choice where so it's south-facing. We work with what we have. Although could never go that dense on the ground. We have two snakes local, the Red Bellied Black, deadly but pretty docile. The other a Tiger, and you do not want kids anywhere near that one. So trying to build a ground layer for lizards which isn't easy.
    Also, I never get the where do the kids play. Our backyard has fruit trees, and veggie raised beds, and in the middle, there is the lawn. Kids don't need massive amounts of open space.

    I see poisonous snakes at the farm all the time. We like to leave them alone. Systems work by having predators. As long as you pay attention it is not an issue. I understand the concern with little kids and pets though. We also have ag ponds so we have alligators, too. Nature is beautiful. We have hummingbirds, deer and other amazing animals due to the systems in place as well as all the ones people are afraid of.

    I surveyed land for many years, working in the woods almost every day. I only stepped on two copperheads, neither of which bit me. (Although one struck at me but I was young and nimble) I walked through more spider webs than you could count and never had any serious bites, ticks were worse. Homeowners and random crackheads were the biggest threat. Ive been shot at, attacked by crackheads, etc. I ALWAYS kept my bush axe nearby especially in urban areas and it saved my hiney more than once. The point is, your garden is probably on the list of the more safe places one might frequent, and dont worry about snakes and spiders but watch out for your neighbors.

      The founding fathers would probably tell you to move and regain the rights they fought for and you've given up.
      I have a friend who had to fight to change hoa rules to allow a veggie garden in the back yard. But he was successful.
      Maybe you can convince your neighbors to change your rules?

    • @NoNORADon911
      @NoNORADon911 3 года назад +1

      @@allanturpin2023 Permission in the back yard? oh brother. There was an HOA that forced owners to leave their garage doors open to make sure nobody was living in there. They did not care about theft or how it looked even in this case. It eventually was reversed I think.
      In South Florida it was won in court to allow front yard veg gardens in all of Florida, non HOA of course.
      And my county started allowing chickens like 10-15 years ago as long as no one complains or you have a certain amount of space around you.
