There's a certain charm to this film. Makes you feel comfortable and uneasy at the same time. The 80's music and ambient soundtrack make it even better.
A quick explanation: Donnie Darko is about the tangent universe theory. basically, there's the main universe and at one point (when the jet engine falls on Donnie's room) a tangent universe is formed. A tangent universe is a complete carbon copy of the main universe but it is very unstable and will collapse in a short amount of time (28:06:42:12) by causing a black hole big enough to swallow the tangent universe AND the main universe, hence ending the world. If you watch the director's cut it is explained that every one who survives the tangent universe (everyone except Frank and gretchen) is called the manipulated living, they need to make sure that Donnie can return back in time through the portal to when the dimensional split occured and he has to die to prevent the dimensional split. This is why the characters didn't act like humans, because they had a set role they were unconsciously fulfilling.

I like a story that shows what happens when you avoid an inevitable death....everything seems off, unnatural, weird, bizarre. I think the nature of the characters we see are intentionally that way, like you suggested. It's a slightly bizarro world, therefore the characters seem slightly off..
It's been many years since I saw this, but from what I remember him not dying when he was supposed to was creating a rip in the fabric of the universe, which would eventually destroy everything. Grandma Death or whatever they called her wrote a book about it, because it's a semi-regular occurance, apparently. And from that point on, the universe will do everything it can to steer him in the right direction, by "puppeteering" the people around him in order to manipulate him to do The Right Thing (TM). Wasn't there like a director's cut that had a lot more material and explained it rather clearly (and basically ruined the mistique by taking away all the guesswork and interpretation)? Anyway, I also like the Jacob's Ladder interpretation Madfox presented. Which reminds me I should definitely rewatch both Donnie Darko and Jacob's Ladder.

He may or may not take the sponsor seriously but he is very committed to making watching his ads interesting as hell. Doug actually puts a lot of effort into his promotional sponsor segments. I love them. He could literally just say "These people paid me to say go buy stamps now." Instead he actually takes time to create a unique persona for every sponsored video he makes and plays them very well. His mid-video ads are by far the best of any youtuber I've ever watched.
I think he has to take them seriously due to contract obligations. I feel like he is trying to play with the idea of sponsored ad, and this particular episode it got exceptionally crazy.

7:58 The controlling fear thing isn't far fetched at all for the time period. A lot of schools were doing programs based on junk psychology at the time while bashing "negative influences" as pornography. My grade school principal (who was something of a Reagan-ite) started a program called 'Positive Actions' and I just couldn't stand it. Some of the younger kids liked it but I was in the sixth grade, I didn't want to deal with that shit.
Yeah, dougs too old to get the climate of schools in the post 9/11 era. This movie wasnt just mopy and cynical for no reason, it was in response to a time when forced happiness and religious dogma were at their height.
@@NudeSophist The movie is supposed to take place in 1988 not post 9/11 hence why the OP mentioned Reagan lol. If anything Doug would have been around 6 or 7 years old in 88 and too young to remember when schools (middle and high school) were teaching the sort of thing depecticed in the film. My older brother was starting 5th or 6th grade in 88 remembers that era and all the weird psychology stuff. By the time I started 6th grade in the mid 90s we didn't have it anymore thankfully. And movies right after 9/11 were trying to be more...uplifting? I guess I would say because a lot of audiences were trying to escape the gloom and depression that lingered after 9/11 but if I'm not mistaken this movie was filmed before 9/11 and released right around it. It took a few years for it to find success. I remember by 2007/2008 it was at its height in popularity. It kind of flew under the radar in 2001
@Kyle Micheals -- Don't worry, you're fine. That "Satanic Panic" shit crops up about once a decade, has been a regular thing since at least the 50's. Then it was Elvis and pot (if you want a good laugh at how overblown it was, look up the cult classic "Reefer Madness"), later it would be acid rock, communism, and D&D. By the late 90's/ early 2000's it would be Harry Potter brainwashing kids into paganism and witchcraft and Marylin Manson's music causing school shootings. And then came the REALLY insane stuff, like the preacher who claimed the Telletubbies were sending out subliminal messages to turn toddlers into gay, crossdressing, Satanists. And then there's everything that happened when the general public was introduced to what a Furry was...
To be fair, the "THAT class!" for the "control your fear" lesson was a bit harsh... It's not uncommon for schools to add one or two special lessons when a traumatic event occurs (deceased student, natural disaster in the region, planes falling on the neighbourhood..)
BWMagus It depends from teacher to teacher. Most teachers are there just for the academic lesson. But my chorus teacher genuinely cared about us and like twice a month she would have a "centering day" where she would have us do meditation for like 25 minutes and then asked us to share how we felt afterwards if we wanted. It was the most calming parts of the school year and it was really surprising to see other teenagers open up about they were struggling that day or that week. (And this wasn't just opening up to like 5 other people lol, there was a total of 97 teenagers in the chorus)
Every Nostalgia Critic episode: -These guys here say it's the best thing ever. -But those guys there say it's the worst. -Well it's in the middle. The End.
I don’t know, but for some reason the whole fear and love line of “philosophy/ethics/religion” class has always captivated me as a concept. I don’t believe it, but it is kind of interesting to compare the two feelings as direct opposites. It actually inspired me to do a painting. Which I will sadly never get back, along with my “David” and my sketchbook and all of my art pieces from 1st year of high school.
but it makes no sense, the reality is that there is only ONE opposite to EACH and all emotions, which is indifference, not feeling any emotion is more of a opposite to feeling emotion then a different emotion isnt it??
The best part of this movie is the surrealism that comes across as nostalgia. It's the combination cinematography, color tones, music, and just the weird-ass dialogue--which is surreal because I was like 5 during the time setting of the movie. "Hey, you guys, guess what?! My Mom said the school is closed today because it’s flooded. " "Holy shit! That's the best news I've ever heard!" Also, you stopped right before the best line in the movie. "You'll put Ariel in the garbage disposal." "Goddamn right, I will." That line is the most beautiful thing I've witnessed Gyllenhaal say. It's like he snuck in 40 extra pounds of baggage along with that line. I just love every millisecond. I can't explain it more clearly than that.
having seen this movie all the way through, i can safely say that Doug left a good chunk of the movie out. i really do recommend people watch it all the way through, there's some context to Donnie's actions that are left out, and the "liquidator schlong" actually appears once before the time Dough showed it.
Personally I think Donnie Darko is accidental genius the movie. The director has never made another movie that people could agree was good. Donnie Darko is a complete fluke, which is why I think people are so split. Somebody who isn’t very good at directing made one movie that is maybe good? I almost think that he took this crazy idea and used his incompetence to stitch together a frankensteined movie that oddly works for me. A lot of this movie is aesthetic. Donnie Darko is just like this feeling, this vibe. When I watch it I feel a certain way, like I’m in a hospital, a pristine bathroom, a closet at a party. It’s just grabs me and sucks me in every time of just got these visuals and feelings it invokes in me. I also get this other worldly feeling from the movie. Like these are people but they aren’t. They’re people through an over dramatic lense. I think you’re suppose to relate to what each person represents but you don’t relate to them exactly as like, people, on a deeper level. You relate to what Donnie stands for but you feel disconnected from him as a person, like you don’t understand him. I like that though, like I can’t recall any movie where I genuinely don’t fully understand the main character or like at least can’t relate to his emotions. Either way, this movie is exactly what inspires me to want to create. This stilted world that ours but not always interests me. It’s always interesting to explore these different people, like watching aliens. It’s amazing and I crave every minute of it.
I agreed with you about"accidental genius" part. For me, this movie is one of the best teenager film. Donnie Darko faced the classic teenager issue: confused, has unique thought that didn't follow authority and never sure he is really right or not. Teenagers in this movie feel like real teenagers rather than Cartoon horny kids nowadays in the movie. Time Travel is just a plot device for Donnie Darko to grow up. That is this kind stuff should be used. But I think the director Richard Kelly completely missed point what make Donnie Darko good at first place. He just fall into Time Travel "arty stuff" and never catch on again.
That's like saying star wars, sixth sense, and the matrix are accidental genuis. They clearly cared about the productions and working hard even if their careers demonstrate a severe lack in quality. Alot of the time is due to having too much creative control when films are a group effort
That otherworldy feeling is definetely there, and I think it might even be intentional. idk if you know the #DEEPLORE associated with the movie, but basically everyone in the movie is being influenced by some kind of higher power (aliens, god, etc, nobody knows) so everything has a really odd feel to it, almost like the whole movie is really just about donnie and this otherworldy being interacting with eachother. It gives me the same feeling of awe that the ending scene of annihilation(great movie btw) does, where you feel the presence of something incomprehensible and it just adds so much to the experience.
Very interesting I can't say I entirely agree with you but I do find it very interesting to hear you out your opinion is quite visual and understanding from my perspective when I saw this movie this movie was just boring but it is cool to read other people's opinions on it cuz it means different things to other people if it's something that influenced you that's a good thing
Its kind of the main drivers. Is he truly insane and out of his mind? Or is the world actually going to end if he doesn't obey the giant bunny from hell? And as Doug would put it, the answer is simply yes.
One of my psych papers had an assignment where we were to diagnose a character from a film we hadn't seen, so I chose this. He does portray a schizophrenic character very well, though my job was kinda too easy given he's already taking medication and therapy for it. The question is, is everything else just in his mind? Pretty sure what was being watched here though was the director's cut, because the clearest evidence that there's more going on than just his delusions is Frank taking off his mask in the cinema. Everything else is kinda ambiguous; those water bubbles that show where someone will go never show anything beyond what could easily be viewed as an educated guess. But yeah, if you watch the original theatrical version I hear it's a pretty good representation of someone going through schizophrenia. Perhaps that's part of the reason a lot of it is confusing awkward as it's trying to portray how people with schizophrenia view the world.
I liked the movie because of Donnie. I used to go to therapy, always cynical, took medication, used to talk back to my teachers infront of the entire class, and I was good at English class while everyone else sucked at it like they did in the movie. Donnie reminded me a lot of myself and thats what made me like the movie.
Just like you I could relate to Donnie, but I find most of the movie pretentious because of the high school portions and didn’t really delve much further about his depression and cynicism. The part of ”god’s channel” also made me skip the scene, I’m all for debating physics but including an omnipotent being into the conversation and I lose interest.
"I'm unique because I see what's REALLY going on, not like the sheeple who follow the rules and just don't understand how complex I am." Dude, don't be a Raskolnikov
I'd watch all your sponsorship ads even without movie review. Normally I skip those when it comes to other youtubers, but you take that to another entertaining level.
I like the foreshadowing in this movie (like “cellar door” for example), the lecture about wormholes in time and space, how predictable people’s everyday lives are symbolized by elongated bubbles (fact: it was inspired by those NFL commentary drawings while the director was high) and in this scene the family ARE watching football, Frank’s rabbit mask is cool AF and I want one, the credit’s theme: mad world fits the film so well, divergence in the timeline, tangential universe, grandfather paradox, and the end of Donnie’s world: losing the life of the girl who had crush on him. Time loops back to the point where donnie should have died via jet engine falling onto his house (1. the same engine came from a few days into the future where his mom and sister won the talent show but there was an engine failure on the flight to California eventually killing them in a plane crash) (2. Donnie was supposed to die but frank’s arrival interfered by leading Donnie away on the exact night it was going to fall on his house), I forgot to mention Donnie takes medication because he has schizophrenia, going to therapy and talking about seeing a demonic rabbit telling him the end of the world is coming and instructing him to stir up some vandalism....yeah, that doesn’t look too good. Im still amazed that donnie is seeing the frank unmasked at the movie theater and having a laugh, the same guy he would murder a couple days later because frank ran over the only girl who cared about Donnie. (He lost her, he lost his parents and sister to a plane malfunction. It is the end of the world, his world. A mad world) Anyway after the Halloween climax, as a result the girl lives on having a slight case of deja vu, and life goes on. It’s a few details that make rewatching this movie interesting just searching for. Like seeing frank in the background earlier in the movie (as a regular guy without the costume) News report talking about plane crashes Someone tampered with the plane’s jet engine days before in advance. Flight crew commenting on the strange weather and dismissing the conversation before take off. I apologize if this doesn’t make sense or has a number of mistakes, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it, or read the explanation, philosophy of time travel. It’s just what I remember.
Frank Rabbit. S Darko is a movie that should not even EXIST! Because his little sister knows about the talent show (okay, sure it seems possible that the talent show still happened) but she has the philosophy of time travel book which she should not even have in the first place. Something something major plothole and a big plot point is just kinda ignored by the end (something about billy, the missing kid) I remember a nerdy guy being corrupted by a meteor fragment. (Not to be confused with spiderman 3)
@@PhantomShadow224 the biggest reason i can think for her to even have the book as being one of the manipulated living she somehow came across grandma death and asked the right questions.

Oh, wow, okay. Now I see why the Director's Cut is recommended so highly. It fills in a lot of the blank spaces, helps with transitions by giving pieces of the time travel book, plus shows that everyone in the town remembers the last 28 days, 6 hours, yadda yadda, but isn't sure if it was a dream. Certainly worth a rewatch if you can get that version, it'll make more sense. Well, as much sense as an intentionally obfuscated movie can make.
Directors cuts are for people that cannot formulate their own theories and opinions on a movie....if someone releases a movie for an audience it becomes subject to everyones different interpretations. Nothing more nothing less...i don't need a blowhard filling in the blanks.
Jeramy1440 Clash of kings k1035 I'm wondering if it matters which one you watch first? I bought the Director's Cut first - really enjoyed it, a lot. When I found the theatrical release also bought it. Liked it, also, but not quite as much. Maybe if I had seen it before the Director's Cut my opinion would be different? :)
Donnie Darko IS a good movie, but just that. it has never been and will never be a masterpiece. Making a movie around deep and complex themes doesn't automatically make it a deep and complex movie.
...wait what? I mean it's ranked number 142 on my list but you do realize what subjectivity is? People are allowed to think it's a masterpiece. Also you claim the movie isn't deep and complex despite it very much being deep and complex, it's as if you are discrediting what literally happens in the film and are taking this NC review at face value.
@Felicia Taylor yes more like sacrificing himself. He was kind of played as a Jesus figure. His purpose was bringing the jet engine to the other universe, where it crashes and kills him.
I love this movie because it makes great use of Chekhov's hammer in the sense that it ties up loose ends very well. Nothing is this movie is actually wasted. Everything comes back to mean something, and every time you watch it, you pick up on another recurring detail you previously missed. It's a very consice film from that viewpoint, something which is extremely rare in today's cinema. Another film that is similarly concise is Master & Commander because everything you see is what you get (though it's adapted from the series of the same name, it follows the events of a single book in the series, with enough liberties taken to give the impression of a larger world outside that on screen). Donnie Darko is remembered for being a film that truly comes full circle. Whether or not that makes it a good story is another matter. But cinematically, it's an excellent movie. EDIT: Fixed the spelling of Chekhov. Good catch, thanks.
I knew that a bunch of random guys would say they opinion about the movie even without anyone asking for. And other random guys would comment agreeing or disagreeing about it. So predictable world.
@@BWMagus The dialogue is believable during the home scenes. It's believably awkward during the social scenes. It fits the theme of the film and Donnie's character. The underlying point of the story is that everything which happens is upsetting an already delicate domestic balance. Of course the dialogue is going to be awkward. You'd be awkward in the same circumstances.
Really? Why? Like why is it in your top ten, I'm genuinely curious. I always saw Donnie Darko as a movie that was on the level of cheesiness as one of Steven Kings short series. I never found anything deep or interesting about it.
Im one of those artsy people that love this movie, but i can also take criticism on it. Like he right about a lot of it. I will fully admit the editing is bad, but also gives it unneeded charm that without it would make the movie seem weird to me.
It is a movie of its time, and I dont think thats a bad thing. So many plot elements would be out of place if it werent set in the 2000s. Like all the religous dogma and hypocrisy, totally inspired by the kind of shit that went on post 9/11 and post columbine.
I kinda appreciate this for what it is. When you're a teen, you're faced with the darker and more impactful facts about life. So you try to get above it, and you try to understand it. Your thoughts are still clumsy and unrefined but it's still an accomplishment to put more thought into the world around you. That's pretty much this movie's theme in a nutshell. This movie is clumsy and awkward, but it's trying to explore deeper meanings and thoughts. And the audience that likes it seem to be in that stage of growth.

It was the most calming parts of the school year and it was really surprising to see other teenagers open up about they were struggling that day or that week. The best part of this movie is the surrealism that comes across as nostalgia. Congratulations on being on Trending Nostalgia Critic.
Very well put :)
So glad that the "BUBBLES!" gag is still strong!
This is my favourite film, not because it’s deep but it’s just so damn entertaining and nostalgic
There are some flaws but I love this movie
it really isnt, its boring and obnoxious
I always thought this was simply a movie about somebody suffering from schizophrenia

Lmao wow
I can see how it might be a film about potential school shooters. Seriously.
Donnie was supposed to die but frank’s arrival interfered by leading Donnie away on the exact night it was going to fall on his house),
I forgot to mention Donnie takes medication because he has schizophrenia, going to therapy and talking about seeing a demonic rabbit telling him the end of the world is coming and instructing him to stir up some vandalism....yeah, that doesn’t look too good.
A mad world)
Anyway after the Halloween climax, as a result the girl lives on having a slight case of deja vu, and life goes on.
It’s a few details that make rewatching this movie interesting just searching for.
Like seeing frank in the background earlier in the movie (as a regular guy without the costume)
News report talking about plane crashes
Someone tampered with the plane’s jet engine days before in advance.
Flight crew commenting on the strange weather and dismissing the conversation before take off.

Certainly worth a rewatch if you can get that version, it'll make more sense. Well, as much sense as an intentionally obfuscated movie can make.

*Chekhov's gun :)
*Pedantic 😉
I knew that a bunch of random guys would say they opinion about the movie even without anyone asking for. And other random guys would comment agreeing or disagreeing about it. So predictable world.
But what does the care bear mean?
@@BWMagus The dialogue is believable during the home scenes. It's believably awkward during the social scenes. It fits the theme of the film and Donnie's character.
The underlying point of the story is that everything which happens is upsetting an already delicate domestic balance. Of course the dialogue is going to be awkward. You'd be awkward in the same circumstances.
The moment you mispronounced “Gyllenhaal” as “Gyllen-THALL”, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
The ultimate weapon to kill Frank the Bunny....
"STAMPS!"
I was pleasantly surprised to see you reviewing one of my top ten favorite movies. Donnie Darko made me the most emo teenager in high school.
Really? Why? Like why is it in your top ten, I'm genuinely curious. I always saw Donnie Darko as a movie that was on the level of cheesiness as one of Steven Kings short series. I never found anything deep or interesting about it.
@@aliciafraser1835 I lived my bruiting teen fantasy through Jake Gyllenhaal
What about the intellectual side and jock side battle from AvP
Im one of those artsy people that love this movie, but i can also take criticism on it. Like he right about a lot of it. I will fully admit the editing is bad, but also gives it unneeded charm that without it would make the movie seem weird to me.
It is a movie of its time, and I dont think thats a bad thing. So many plot elements would be out of place if it werent set in the 2000s. Like all the religous dogma and hypocrisy, totally inspired by the kind of shit that went on post 9/11 and post columbine.
I saw this when I was really young. It freaked me the f*"k out.
Very hard to understand as well huh?
Donnie Darko AND Nostalgia Critic in the same video? You guys know how to make my Wednesday night
*bangs fists against desk*
I LOVE STAMPS!
"When will Admiral Boom announce his cannon fire?!" xD
Did somebody say "boom"?
BOOM!
This is the best description of this movie I've seen so far.
