You don't have to varnish/finish a wooden spoon, but you could use something like linseed oil or soybean oil to help protect the wood! 🙂 What do you want to make with your wood carving? Just spoons or other things too?
I tried carving with a opinel No8...nope ! Great french knife/steel but not for carving.... anyway it's winter soon so the sap will be down... take walks in the parks and woods with a small folding saw and gather standing deadwood limbs or harvest a few branches from tree's too dry out at home, .....love the pilgrimage, love the combat's, love the boots, love the cooking, carving, cat ... videos...keep them going if you can ... it's therapy for people !🖖🍀🐱
Are you kidding? WTF are you on about? All these videos are crap, make a cat spoon ? Or just buy one, as the machines/tooling required to make the cat spoon will cost more than a full cutlery set. Also, never use a cutting tool towards the body. You could judge the pressure needed to carve the wood, if you knew anything about the grain of the wood. Absolutely pointless and useless videos. Next video suggestion, - How to wipe your arse using leaves!!! Another absolutely pointless video. P.S The spoon looks terrible, it would've been put to better use by just throwing the wood onto a fire.
@@sebastiandiaconu1221hopefully she doesn’t cut any fingers off snagging her long sleeves into a power tool. Guess she’d still be cute and more quirky tho.
Hi Mole, woodworker here, really well done! And bonus points for using a respirator on the scroll saw! If you intend to do more woodworking the best bit of advice I can give would be for you to select projects you feel you can accomplish but which also push you to bring your skills up to the next level, and to buy the best tools you can within your budget for that project. Cheap tools are a bit of a false-economy for woodworking, and better tools will last longer, create better looking projects and be much more enjoyable to use. If you intend to use more power tools a ‘wet and dry vacuum’ for dust extraction is a worthwhile investment, and a collapsible workbench is also a very handy thing to have starting out. Also: if you’re having issues cutting thicker stock on your scroll saw, look up ‘skip tooth blades’, they make that much easier (they don’t come with pins attached though, so make sure they’re compatible with your scroll saw, if the scroll saw came with small two metal blocks with little handles and set screws in them those are what you’d use to install skip tooth blades).
Hiii thank you so much for your suggstion! looking forward to invest in a work bench soon:) do you have any suggestion for cutting wood block without a scroll saw? i find the noise irretationg, as currently im living in shared flat i think i need an alternative, wood board will be about 2.9 cm thick.
@@Imalittlemole Hmm, well hand tools are your only alternative if you want don't want to make noise. There are two saws that would do the job, each with pros and cons: A coping saw and a japanese ryoba saw. A coping saw has a very thin blade which helps it to not get stuck in the wood as you cut further in and allows you to make tight angled cuts like on the scroll saw. It also has a very long ‘throat’ capacity (the distance between the blade and the metal frame that holds the blade in place) to allow you to cut far into the wood. The downside is that it can be difficult to hold a straight line because the blade is so thin that the uneven hardness of the wood or just human error can push you off of your line, and secondly while the throat capacity is generous it will limit how long a cut you can make with it. So, for instance, with your spoon, a regular size coping saw would be able to cut maybe 2/3 the length until the metal frame hits the top of the wood and you’d need to come at it from another angle. You could get over this by getting a reeally big coping saw though lol. The double-edged ryoba saw has no frame or ridge on the back of the blade to block the cut, so it can go all the way through the length of a block of wood. It has two faces, one with shallow teeth for cross cuts (cuts perpendicular to the direction of the grain) and a face with big teeth or raw cuts (cuts parallel to the direction of the grain). It cuts quickly and, with a bit of practice, straight and accurately. The downside is that it can only cut in straight lines so you would need to make multiple angled cuts to rough out the shape of any rounded profiles, and also, once you get to a certain depth, the wood will ‘pinch’ the blade and make it difficult to keep cutting (you can wedge the wood open to help, but ultimately it comes down to brute force). Of the two, a large coping saw would definitely be the better choice, but a ryoba for the straight cuts would save you some time (and come in handy as a general purpose saw). In either case, you would need something to clamp the workpiece down while you cut, so the workbench would be necessary too. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Best of luck!
Just casually setting up a electric bandsaw in your living room, love it! North UK can be brass temperatures this time of year tho so cant imagine carving with freezing hands. Great job!
I love that your channel is just videos where you've decided to do whatever the heck you feel like 😄 I actually thought about trying wood carving like this, but i'm kind of afraid of injuring myself really badly because i'm very clumsy 😅 Your work is very good considering how new you are! Phasmo video next time? 😂
I am a very clumsy person sometimes too, put protection on and youll be fine, also i stab myself once, cut myself 4 times, they all heal whitin a week :) but yeah put gloves on to avoid that!
I have drawn, painted and carved dogs and foxes, but only carved one cat on a spoon for a friend a couple of years ago. Keep up the good work, you inspire many people. 😊
One tip I can offer is to sharpen your tools every time you start to carve something, it will make life easier and safer. I have some mini carving chisels and have made some 3D printed sharpening jigs to use with my wet stones to sharpen them. I enjoyed this, one new subscriber!
I don't know why the Algorithm brought me to an Asian girl carving a spoon out of wood in her room whilst humming "The girl from Ipanema". But I'm kinda hooked....😅👍
If you post a few more videos per week. You will easily hit the 100k subs in less than 6 months. You are a lovely and interesting person. The world would be better with more people like you.
Nice spoon!! Now clean it thoroughly, put it in an oven at 50 degrees for an hour to dry well, submerge it in food grade mineral oil and leave it soaking for 24 hours. This will seal the wood and make it waterproof and virtually indestructable!! If you want to have more shine, make a mix of mineral oil and beeswax. You should be able to find both products in those bigbox stores that cater to the diy people, like Leroy Merlin and such
What you said about the inconsistency of the hard/soft wood is very true. I finally just started whittling as a new hobby this week and I quickly realized that I should stop being cocky and get some cut resistant gloves.
Mole you are so very interesting. I can't believe you stream on Twitch too! I can't wait for more videos from you. It's going up for you from here. You're doing great Mole!
Hey there lil mole, I've came across your 66miles video the other day and really liked it. However, I got intrigued and watched all your other videos so far and all I can say is that they are wholesome and very inspiring. Keep up the good work! and looking forward to more creative items or adventures your journey takes you. Also your edits are brilliant with a good mix and balance of music, tone and rhythm of narration. 👍👍👍👍
1:10 it's real wood, just 2 boards glued together to make for larger board. It's done because wider single piece boards would be more expensive. This way they make the wide board with cheaper wood.
Excellent job Mole, Well done! 😊👏👏. That line on the wood looks like they have glued two pieces of wood together! and rather than let that spoon with the hole in go to waste you could maybe to it into a fork! Keep up the great work you are pure entertainment!!! Thank you! 😂
The spoon looks cute. Well done! Not an expert, but from the videos I've watched e.g., wood working and carving - The seam in the middle of the wood is just two pieces of wood glued together. 1. Use small portable dremel/rotary tool for intricate details and to smooth out the surfaces. 2. When carving complex object, draw the object (cat) from all sides, so the front, sides and back, I think it makes it easier to carve? 3. Maybe a portable desk vice can make it easier to carve (more control) 4. Use wood putty to fill in any cracks (but make sure its food safe if you intend to use it to handle food) 5. Sand the surface before applying paints/oil/stains, because it opens up the grain (can use small dremel/rotary tool as it comes with multiple tips/heads), sanding also makes it more comfortable and can help prevent splinters. 6. Maybe you can find cheap tools at carboot sales.

Maybe get yourself a Dremel type rotary sander, it would cut down your carving by a great deal and also help with small details.
