    The Unimax 700 canister filter is well designed, has excellent contact area for mechanical filtration and an excellent provision for biological filtration - 8kg of Biohome Ultimate easily fit in this filter.
    Since it holds at least 8kg of biohome ultimate it is really suited to normally stocked tanks of up to 800 litres (210 US gallons) or heavily stocked tanks of up to 400 litres (105 US gallons) if you want to achieve a full cycle.
    I reckon you could easily get another 500g of media in each tray and still have them fitting together properly taking the potential total up to 10kg which is double the amount an FX5 or FX6 will take.
    Awesome stuff...
    Unimax 70 video: bit.ly/2PS0UNp
    A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
    Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
    Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
    Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
    You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
    Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.

    Well said about the quality of Aquael products. I have a heater, three small internal power heads (great apart from the sponges they come with 👎🏻) and a Leddy (led) clip on light. Been very pleased with all of them. Wouldn't think twice about buying anything from Aquael, the products I've experienced so far seem well designed and durable. If I ever have a tank or fish big enough to warrant this amount of filtration, I would definitely give it a go!

      That is no worries - I did a big tetra filter the day after and it also took 8kg so that was a very expensive week. Anyone who thinks this channel exists for profit should maybe take a look at how much stuff I give away, lol
      I don't mind spending the money to make these videos as it helps not only the person who sent the filter but also anyone else who owns or is interested in owning the filter, plus I'm building up a really extensive and accurate amount of information on all types of filters which will help people who check out the 'Filters' page on the FilterPro website. There are only a few filters on there so far as I've had so little time to add information but once I get it all added it will be a really useful source of information so it's all good.

    For the most efficent use of the UV light, the water should come in after it is polished, this way the "muck" doesn't block any light from getting to the diatoms or floating algae. Also, usually saltwater aquarists have a 12hr cycle for the uv filter for many reasons, mostly, we keep it on only at night to offset the added heat from the UV bulb and to offset the PH dip at night. We also have the sump/fuge light on and night and find that spores are released during those hours, so it is the best time to use the UV light. Some also say that the UV light kills too many micro organism that need to float around during the day to propagate, like copepods, etc

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад +3

      I can't comment on marine use as I have never kept marine fish so I'll take that as good advice, thanks for the comment as it makes sense. To me it really doesn't matter if the UV is first or last, I like to see it last if algae is an issue (dead algae is taken out by foams and fine pad) but for other issues or concerns it may be better last.
      I'll not argue either way as both have pros and cons.

    • @ThePentosin
      @ThePentosin 6 лет назад

      In theory the muck could block some of the uv light. But in practice, your water would have to really dirty to have an effect in that regards. Your tank would be a soup of some kind. No one has water that dirty. So no, doesnt matter where the UV is.

    I have this filter and decided to decommission it after a few months of use - mainly because of the dual inputs and outputs. Having 4 hoses in protruding from the tank made it a real eye-sore and its not like the output pressure is so high that it couldn't have easily been one. Cleaning was always a pain because the baskets are stacked higher that the water level of the cannister, so water spews out everywhere when you unclip the head. I can see why its not a filter that gets discussed with the Fluvals and Ehiems of the world.

    It's by far the best filter in this series... There is one thing regarding the bacteria colonies. Even after good filter set up our aquarium are in isolation where not all naturally occurring bacteria will be available that do the anoxic filteration. This I found the hard way, even after doing this set up nothing much happened to Nitrates untill I introduced the specialised bacteria to occupy the filter media.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, some set ups may just need a little boost by adding prepared bacteria but the majority of the time it will develop naturally. I have a Ultramax 2000 here to make a video on and while it doesn't look as big as the Unimax 700 I'm looking forward to taking it apart to film a video on as it seems very well made.

    I must say I am very impressed with this filter. The only thing I would do differently would be to use glassware (Lily pipes) and set up one input and output at the left and one at the right of the tank. Many people with large aquascapes are using 2 filters for this purpose. You don't want ugly powerheads and wavemakers in the tank. The amount of media is fantastic. I like Aquael they are a good company and I use their lights for the plants.

  • @MrDanAng1
    @MrDanAng1 6 лет назад +1

    Wow!
    This is a beast of a filter. It's bigger than most of the AquaEl tanks I have seen!
    It seem you could get a kilo or two more of biohome in the trays, and I guess you could fill the bottom of the filter with maybe half a kilo or a kilo more, since you can't fill it with ceramic rings to filter out heavy muck because of the flow direction.
    So I think you could fill it with up to 11 kg of biohome ultimate if you really stuffed it, and it would be suited for tanks well over 1000 liters and still get a full cycle of filtration.
    I don't think it's a problem the filter is from Poland, Aquael seem to get genarally good reviews from the users.
    I have two small Aquael-filters and one heater that have never caused me any trouble during years of use.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад +2

      Yes it would certainly take more media but safely takes 8kg i the trays. Where the UV would be could also be filled with mesh bags of media allowing the filter to hold some insane amount of media - I was really impressed with this one and I have to admit I didn't even know Aquael made large filters until I was offered this one.
      When I filmed this video straight after I filmed a Tetra EX1200 which was also a good filter and it held 8kg so that was a very expensive day for me giving 16kg or media and foams away (and sending 2 heavy boxes back with couriers).
      This channel's motivation certainly isn't financial, lol

    Great review Richard.
    But omg that thing is massive.
    I wouldn’t want to try and move that filter from under my tank when it’s full of media and water, it must way a ton.
    I’ve stopped using my aqua one occelaris 850 as there just wasn’t enough space in it. I’ve now got a tetratec ex800 which has more space for the biohome media but it’s a pain getting the trays to sit flat when I clean it and I spend about ten minutes taking the trays out and then putting them back in until they line up otherwise I can’t get the top back on.
    I might give one of these unimax filters a go, my marine tank is 245 litres so I will look into getting the unimax 250.
    I like the fact they filter from top to bottom, this way I can open it up, give the sponges a clean and put the them back without having to pull all the biological media trays out.

  • @PalJoey-rm2yh
    @PalJoey-rm2yh 6 лет назад +3

    Great design on this one. I love the large media capacity. Other manufacturers need to copy this.
    Your suggestion for a bottom up water flow with the UV in the first compartment would result in a coated UV tube and vastly diminished UV penetration of the water. UV should always come last in a filter configuration. It needs clear water to be effective.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад +1

    Would there be any harm in putting the supplied rings into a couple of mesh bags and placing them in that empty well below the tray stack? Same thing for the empty column where the uv is meant to go - slide the glassy filter floss into it as a polisher maybe?
    It's all over-egging the pudding I realize but the rings would be handy as spare cycled media for another use in an emergency. Just a thought.

    That's more like it bio-media capacity wise. After watching your FX6 video, I commented on the foam/bio media ratio being a bit back to front. This Aquael has got it the other way around. Room for loads of bio and plenty enough foam in the first tray.
    If they offered a version that had a heater in the UV slot, this would be just about the perfect filter for me.
    Of course, the proof is in the pudding so I'll be checking around for user reviews of these filters in action.
    The two inlets bit, I've read some stuff about the Eheim 1200 XL which also has two inlets with some people saying one inlet was doing most of the work while the other was a lazy so and so, not drawing in much water. I'm not sure if that's an issue for the filter or the aquarium or neither, but still.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад +1

      I think that the 2 pumps operating on different inlets should allow for equal flow between intake pipes so the flow shouldn't be a problem. Yes, simply having space for a heater instead of a UV makes perfect sense to me too.

    Totally off topic but relevant nonetheless. I’ve followed all your advice and bought 20 lbs of Biohome Ultimate for my various canisters. My question is: If it is a choice, would you recommend having or not having a UV sterilizer with an aquarium, as it does kill bacteria. Wouldn’t that kill the beneficial bacteria in the filter???

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      Unless the UV is shining directly on the filter media (which it isn't) it won't affect the bacteria living in the filter but it is best to leave it turned off for the first 2-3 weeks of set up to allow bacteria to flow all through the system. Generally a UV isn't needed for a tank unless you have multiple tanks linked to the same filter or if the tank is taking some sunlight (UV kills green water).

    It's a shame that, by the looks of things this filter has been discontinued, or I would have gone for it. I'm getting back into the hobby after a three year hiatus due to a medical issue making me unable to perform any heavy maintenance. This time, i'm mechanising everything to make it much easier. I think when it comes to it, i'll end up going for the APS EF 2000, and two APS EF-2 filer boosters providing a fully separate prefilter stage with graded foam and fine floss, and a final polishing and chemical filtrations post filter stage filled with more fine floss and carbon, with space for other chemical filtration if needed. The main canister i'll take out everything but the trays, and pack it with as much Bio-home Ultimate as I can squeeze in. I'll combine that with an in-line heater, and a 35 watt UV steriliser. With all the extra pipework, UV steriliser, the heater, and the two boosters, I reckon i'll end up with 1000l/h flow, which ill split in two between a spray bar, and an venturi outlet.

  • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx
    @StanTheObserver-lo8rx 6 лет назад

    Actually,that is high grade floss. It doesn't compact (as much as plain fluff) and becomes a bio filter and mechanical filter in one. In fact,under that sponge you might go many months without cleaning it,unless you have Pacu fish-ha.
    I built a filter with that and packed cleaning sponges under it to keep the intake pipe from sucking in fibers and its the best filter I ever made.

    • @robertfletcher3421

    • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx

      I got it at the LFS..I forget the name brand but funny enough I remember the slogan of "trusted by aquarists for "X" years!"..the years number I dont recall.
      It does feel springy..unlike batting or polyester sold for pillows and such. $8 for a bag of it several times large then the amount in the vid.
      I can go a month without taking the top portions out..lower levels stay whitish..tan..so just let that be. But the top of course will need some washing out.
      As usual..you never really throw it away..just add more as fibers thin.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      Good one - thanks for the tip. It should work OK as long as plenty is used and there is no bypass.

    • @StanTheObserver-lo8rx
      @StanTheObserver-lo8rx 6 лет назад

      Thanks Richard. I should clarify. It was those plastic scrubbers I packed under the poly,not sponge. So far,no reduction in flow from the pump over three weeks now since my last top removal. I'm beginning to think,maybe never even wash that..just muck it up a bit at water changes. All else of my 12 gallons of filter container on a 240 gallon tank is all that poly. MAG 9 pump.

Bottom tray had sponges and fine pad followed by trays of media above that. As far as I remember each tray took about 1kg of biohome ultimate.
