Greetings from Russia. In my region, when winter is only 2, rarely 3 months. We compress the bee nest to 4 or 5 frames tightly covered with a bee and close the diaphragm on both sides, we close the barrier on the fly so that a maximum of two bees could leave the hive 1 (this is done so that on warm winter days, bees could go out for a cleansing flyby). Your main problem why the wax moth got started is that there were a lot of frames that bees don't incubate. - When all the frames are occupied by a bee, bees can protect themselves from the wax moth. Here for horizontal. Tripplett, I gotta tell ya man, no matter what anyone tells you, the horizontal Langstroth is a really nice setup. You can easily make and maintain your own even as a newbie with just a table saw and a screw gun. Best part is that it's fully compatible with anything Langstroth. It's so easy on your back and so easy to manipulate. Keeps bees calmer bay far. Run it with a queen excluder and you have a honey machine, skip the excluder and you have a bee factory which you can use to make splits or to strengthen other hives. It's a great setup.
Stick with a vertical Hive. Langsstroth 10 Frame Hive. Beekeeping is very difficult and EXPENSIVE. I’d suggest you forget the idea. Collect butterflies instead!

@@daddykirbs I don't understand the suggestion to forget the horizontal hive. It is the healthiest one by far and is so much easier to deal with. Way to go. I am going to build one next week!
Nice decision making Blake! Love watching your progress! Half the beauty and fun of raising bees is learning how to anticipate their progress. No two colonies are exactly identical, and all beekeeping is local. No doubt the struggle is real when choosing how you dedicate your precious time! Especially with all you have going on at the farm. You should feel super excited! I'm super happy you made the choice to keep going on with the hobby. Thank you for sharing your progress. Yay, beekeeping, at the time a few years ago I saw your first beekeeping video when I was maybe looking into keeping bees and from there, that is how we met. Not beekeeping at this point in my life but maybe one of these days when I have my own place. So glad I met the DaddyKirbs fanily and found a great friend. Thanks for your friendship and maybe at some point we can meet in person and we can hug each other.

Need to leave in freezer for 2 days to ensure all eggs or larve are killed. Be careful the frozen wax is very brittle
I am hoping to add a horizontal hive to my bees this year. Had a catastrophic year last year. All 5 of my hive died last year right before summer was over. Don’t know what happened. They were so healthy and happy in July and August.... I will not give up! Good luck to you!

On the first hive you need to add several open brood frames to make a queen. Freeze the few frames that you go moths on. Add honey and pollen frame and your ready to go on the vertical hive....

You keep it real, that's what I like. You may do something before I do and that gives me some insight to what I may need to do for my girls. Like that divider board needs to be a bit more taler to keep them out of the no comb area. Keep it up your rocking it ..

I like the idea you are using Langstroth frames in the long boxes, never saw the advantage to top bars. I did put a top bar into a Langstroth box to see how the bees reacted. They drew it how great, I had to cut the sides the first time I removed it, they never reattached it to the sides. Still you have to remove the comb to get the honey out and then start over with new comb. Stay Safe, Body and Mind...

Very helpful video im looking to get started this year and from the point of view of building my own equipment the horizontal hive looks as if it may be an easier build option needing less individual components.
I think it's worth knowing how to manage the vertical hives, but I think if I had to chose only one method at this point it would be the horizontal hive. Less equipment storage is a big reason. So far, for me it looks like it's going to be a successful method of raising bees. We haven't seen yet how it will be for honey.
I saw another guy using two dividers, one on each side of the colony. He was able to add or remove frames and did not have to move the whole colony. Hope this helps...

Pratt Family Homestead best to have 3 or more colonies to utilise the bees better, you can “rob Peter to pay paul” kind of thing, you can keep 2 hives as single colonies and use them to make new queens and steal brood and bees from them to boost the main hive for honey production.

Is there away to install floor traps to catch the Asian Hive Beetles? I really like the horizontal hive idea, and if can solve the hive beetles I am ready to switch.
Very informative - thanks! Question: How do you divide the colony in horizontal hive such that you contain the queen bee in one section much as is done w the traditional vertical hives? Do you simply fit a queen excluder bw a set of frames? Also, can there be more than one colony in one horizontal hive? It seems as there can be since there are three entrances for the bees. Taking a brood frame from a strong hive is a good move for strengthening a weak hive. I would have left the nurse bees on it for an imediate boost in population. Another good move might have been to take it from your horizontal hive which clearly is very strong.I would have also taken all frames other than the one with eggs from stronger hives. food resorses as well. All the frames out of that hive need to be frozen to kill the moths. Since most people are telling me it's too early for moths this season they likely overwintered in that hive.
I really should have taken from either Hive 1 or the HH.

Here for horizontal. Kirbs, if you make a divider with the proper height and instead of a solid board you insert a queen excluder you will turn the horizontal into a honey machine. Maybe you can split this hive into the other horizontal and try it out on that one? It'd be interesting for the audience to see the two hive managed differently maybe. I think your videos are tops. Really glad to see your girls are doing well even with the set backs. You made good decisions today brother. Keep the videos coming please.
Oh... great idea. I can run them both a bit different to compare honey production and bee colony size. Now I need to go research HH queen excluders :)

I used a cutoff blade on my grinder and cut a metal QE. I made the top bar an extra 3/8 tall to come up to the cover boards. I built out the frame leaving only 1/16 to spare on the sides and bottom. I cut a kerf in all pieces, like you would to set plastic foundation. I set the QE in the kerf, nailed it all together and... Donezo. You should see how and when to place the QE and how and when to manage the entrances.
On a side note, you are right about the extra width on the frame rest rabbets. You'll be happy if you can give that other horizontal some extra frame rest width before you get a colony in it. Maybe the grinder could skin some off if you don't have a router. I hope this helps.
I’m at the point in my life that extra lifting is to be avoided it’s something I avoid strongly the whole concept of the horizontal hive which sits at a good height to work no bending and no heavy lifting particularly when supers start to fill with honey and get really heavy your little carry box is a great idea you didn’t explain where you got that but it looks really handy if you need to remove a couple of hive home for a stay in the freezer
If you want to use the best from the horizontal hive amd the box hive, you might try the Scandinavian "trugstade", that has been used here in centuries.
In essens, it a horizontal hive, with room on top, where you can put boxes ontop inside the horizontal hive. Im making one at the moment, with room for 30 frames horizontal, and 2 x 10 frame boxes and 1 x 5 frame nuce acting as supers inside.

Appears your hives are a little light on honey may want to think about feeding some sugar water to hold them over till the flow starts

Lost a hive to wax moth last August hope you have better results. I will have a long horizontal hive made when the weather lets me finish. Thanks for the info. North Texas
It's always a bummer losing a hive. The good thing is that, hopefully, you have more knowledge for this upcoming season. Keep at it!
Wax moths do not kill bees or take over hives. They are the clean up crew that come in after a dead-out, or they can get in if you have more waxed frames then the bees can take care of.
Seems like it comes down to preference for most keepers but what is the most popular hive box style to build?
My horizontal hives don’t supply much honey but I have had horizontal hives be full of honey. Lately lots of brood not much honey. How can one stimulate honey production?

Wont the was moths fly up into that super that's on top of the ones going to the freezer? Couldn't eggs be laying workers?
Why did you put the healthy box on top of the contaminated frames on the side (those that are going to freezer)? The wax moth larva might migrate to the healthy box and damage that.
Along with Tripplett comment I am curious as to how much honey you'll harvest as other keepers in vids have complained lots of brood not enough honey. Just a spectator my aunt kept hives my ol man....Uh no way lol
I'm curious as to why you use the smaller narrower frames, usually referred to as honey supers in the langstroth hives as a regular "super" or deep hive? Also, why are you not using the longer/bigger frames that are meant to be used in the horizontal hives? Just curious
Thanks for the lovely update on the Bees. Shame about the bees in the hive with the wax moth, I hope they recover. Did you feed the bees either last autumn or any time in the winter or did you just leave them their own honey?
I leave honey in the hives for the Winter.
How are you going to handle the beetles? How did you find out how to organize the horizontal hives? Where did you get the dimensions? I'm interested in seeing how you harvest honey from it. Especially how you will spin the honey since you say that you want to transition from waxed foundation. I'm interested in learning more. I'm use the the vertical hives which are heavy and frustrating. I have seriously thought of quitting beekeeping because I cant lift the boxes as well as I use to. This vertical hive might be my answer. I love bees and beekeeping.
Also, do the bees sting you through the plastic gloves? Why do you wear them instead of leather {protective} gloves?

What do you do to control fire ants around your hives?
I don't do much at all. They don't often get into the hives. Sometimes I'll sprinkle with DE or Corn Meal or Grits. The DE really just kind of encourages them to move on, but the Corn Meal is supposed to kill the colony. I'm not sure how well it actually kills the colony, but it does seem to make them go away.
How do you extract the honey
Do you still like the Horizontal Hive vs Vertical in terms of ( Ergonamics, Honey Yield, Health of Hive, Winter Managent )..?
So far I really like the Horizontal Hive design. I don't have enough experience yet to determine if it's going to be better for honey production.

The legs are stabilized with a board that lays flat on the ground.
@@daddykirbs Thank you so much. I have one final question if you wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts. I was wondering if it's possible to keep just 1-2 beehives long-term without expanding the number of hives with splits (they would be horizontal layens hives, so they are even deeper to begin with). Is it possible to artificially curb the bee population so that I don't ever have to manage more than 1-2 hives? I was thinking I could just let them swarm naturally and introduce a new queen afterwards.
Do you find your gloves are good enough protection and are your hands just tough? 😁 I have green ones but wonder if I’ll regret those...
The thin gloves offer no protection. These are 8mil gloves and do some good. They aren't completely sting proof, but work pretty well. I like them WAY BETTER than thick leather gloves. These are the ones that I buy: amzn.to/2xBtajt

I guess not afraid enough.
What is the main source of Nectar and pollan there
Right now pollen would be primarily from dewberry (almost done) purple vetch (just starting), bluebonnet, chinaberry, bur clover, Texas dandelion, yaupon, wild mustard and more. Mesquite, tooth-ache tree and wild persimmon look to be next in line. (I copied that line from an email I get from a local professional beekeeper, Gretchen Bee Ranch)

Why do you put frames into the freezer ?
The freezer makes certain that any eggs from beetles, moths or other possible infestations are killed. 3 days in the freezer and everything dies.

Your bees are starving. You need to feed syrup and pollen patties.
You stated you wanted Natural sized bees in Natural size comb.....then you should not be using foundation. You need to start with Foundationless frames. Bees will make the size comb cells they see fit

The honey bee life cycle involves 4 stages: egg - larva - pupa - adult. There's no such thing as a "baby bee", you're anthropomorphizing the just emerged adult bees.
That term just confused very new aspiring beekeepers. They're usually confused enough as it it, try not to confuse them any further.
I knew what he meant, but I think young and baby is interchangeable words anymore.

You take to long to tell your point. Advice you to shorten down to max 10 minutes. You have an interresting subject, but you make it a bit boring.
Interesting point because when I started doing beekeeping videos I tried to keep them between 8 - 12 minutes, but quite a few people said I was leaving things out and they wanted them longer. I guess it's true that you can't please everyone all the time.
The beauty of RUclips is you can fast forward or jump forward at any point. And I tend to let the video run while doing something else, like building brood frames!
