Dark Souls Covenants are the best

  • At its core, Dark Souls is a game about the need for humanity to reach out and make a connection. So it only makes sense that its multiplayer aspects are not only a ton of fun but also a beautiful translation of this game’s message. Despite a majority of the covenants in this game being pvp oriented they all find ways to have their own unique qualities and they also intersect with each other in such interesting ways. Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3's multiplayer always disappointed me and never felt quite as unique as the systems in Dark Souls One and I just want to get these thoughts out there because these covenants rule.

Do you have a favorite covenant in this game or do you prefer the multiplayer in other from soft titles? I had a ton of fun putting together this video across several characters and it feels great to finally have it finished! Hope you enjoyed it and have a great day!

Yeah playing either sunbro, or mound makers in ds3, god do i love the chaos that is guaranteed when a purple bastard appears in a session. Might kill you. Might kill the invader. And true OGs will remember, that mound makers could enter bossfights with you at the beggining of the game. That was just chaos, dodgind the boss and your own summon...

I often find myself wondering if modern day from software is capable of making a game with such a unique tone and personality in the same way that every game pre ds3 has. To me it feels the streamlining of their formula from 3 onward took away from some of the unique jank and experimentation their earlier games have. I’d really like to see them try and implement really wacky ideas again, such as the overly complex covenant systems or vagrants or resonance rings or the other numerous systems or ideas one just had stuffed into it. It feels like as time went on from lost an aspect of their personality that was present with demons souls, ds1, ds2 and bloodborne. I worry that no matter how much they choose to move away from their classic rolling knight man games, we’ll never get that same level of weirdness and willingness to just try things regardless of if they worked or made sense. The things they implemented in earlier games gave them a sense of longevity and discovery that the later games somewhat lack. Anyway I think about this a lot especially while watching your videos. Great vid btw

Thank you! For me, despite how streamlined Elden RIng can feel, there is still a lot I love and find wacky about it the more I think on it. The insane George RR Martin Worldbuilding and incredibly esoteric world design reminded me a lot of that early From Software charm and I hope they don't forget that getting weird with it is great.

my favourite covenant is mound makers in ds3. The main thing about this covenant that I adore is the fact that I CAN DO ANYTHING. I can turn on anyone at any point and help anyone at any point. You are never safe from my betrayal that may or may not happen, even I never know what will be the outcome because of how chaotic I get with this covenant. Just a simple fact that I can choose anyone as a target or not to choose at all what really made my experience with mound makers just the best experience in the whole series

As I played all of ds1 in offline mode, I couldn't engage with the covenant system beyond the surface level. Because of this I didn't really see the reason why so many sing the praises of this system in this game. The way you portrayed your experience and thoughts on why its even in the game has changed my mind. Especially when you mentioned how the act of helping or invading others reflects the games theme of humanity.

Bro I'm retarded, I was so bad at the game, I look up humanity, it says "it makes you vulnerable to being invaded by other players", so I was like I don't need this in my life and stayed hollow during my entire playthrough. Never summoned anyone, never figured how to cast a spell, never joined a covenant, never managed to successfully parry anything, died to every boss at least 5 times... started out with a useless pendant and just brute forced my way through the game with a club and a greatsword. My character was a big dumb bald guy and my headcanon for him was "they dug him out of the mud, that's how he got birthed". I missed like half the game and it still took me forever.

I wish covenants had more content in them. There is so little to progress towards, it can all be obtained in very little time. Years later people are still playing the games with nothing to pursue! They should be releasing PATCHES for the game with new updates FFS, not just leaving them dead. No money in that though?

FromSoftware isn't in the business of live service games, and that personally makes me glad. The entire point of the Dark Souls story is that everything ends, eventually, and that that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Clinging onto past glory and keeping the new from being born is even considered the Dark Souls setting's original sin.

@@LavenderRex7705 naw honestly i agree i feel like most of the covenants in ds3 boil down to a) auto summon on area entry b) auto summon to gank n c) manual summoned to gank, at least ds1 has some variety in how it applies its multiplayer concepts, of all the things in ds3 i would have thought to criticize it would not have been the covenant communion avatars 😭😭
