This is truly an excellent video and I thank you for posting it. About 7 years ago I got into unifi out of pure necessity. An infested neighborhood at the time with break ins and gunshots being fired at night regularly down the street. I needed security for my family, did my research and thought Ubiquiti is the way since it had similarities to Apple products. I wanted the best unifi had to offer and decided to get a lot of the commercial grade gears. I got the unifi XG - 8 enterprise router , a 24 port switch with 500 watts. 14 cameras including a UVC pro that’s still kicking. Four uap - ac - shd access points for Wi-Fi . From time to time, xfinity would interrupt the internet otherwise no problems . I have a new addition to the house and looking to extend the experience. For those thinking about investing into Unifi gears, I can tell you it’s a worry free system after all these years. Setting things up wasn’t that easy for me, but RUclips videos helped tremendously. Your set up is an inspiration sir.
Couldn’t agree with you more on the comment of “….unifi is the drug…”, I started rebuilding my home infrastructure with about $2k budgeted, and ended up with $8k spending 😂😂😂 But very happy with the results!
This is how “Unifi” ecosystem will do to you :) I started with simple UDM SE with couple of APs and one PoE Max switch, but ended up with few more PoE Max switches at each floor. Then got into Unifi Protect with UNVR Pro and several G5 PTZ cameras……Just about done with the project, Unifi released UNAS Pro:) Of course, you will need to fill the Sata drivers for UNVR pro and UNAS pro… Unifi ecosystem is addictive!
I love this video, Terry! Also yes, UniFi is 100% a drug. When I finished setting up our house I convinced my parents that they too could benefit from a simple UniFi setup just so I could do it all over again. 😂
I have way too much invested in UniFi. 😂 But I don’t regret it as it just works. 4 APs, 15 cameras, 2 24 port switches, 30+ drops of CAT 6a, Aggregation switch, NVR of course, built my own NAS but now want the UniFi NAS. 😂 someone stop me. 😂
Crazy setup. Great explanation. I am in process of constructing our house. Planning is a key and I do relate to your comment what can be hard wired should be. I am going with Loxone for automation, UniFi for networking and security cameras, and local established brand for home security.
Terry, great set up and thanks for sharing. Agree that UniFi is a drug, I have a home UniFi installation as well and agree it'r rock solid. If yo don’t mind, I have two questions: 1. With the AppleTV in your server rack as your primary Apple Home hub, how do you access the user interface to update it, etc? I noticed three cables coming from it and I assume they’re are power, ethernet and HDMI, but where’s the TV / monitor. 2. At 18:36 you show your Mac Studio and primary monitor, what is the primary monitor, looks like a 32 inch one. Thanks again for sharing and all the content you’ve provided over the years. I started following you for your Photoshop education a while back. Cheers and Happy Holidays!
Thanks! 1. There is a TV on the wall outside of the closet in the hallway used for a big digital picture frame. That's what it's connected to. 2. There is an Apple Studio Display , Wacom Cintiq 27" and a Samsung 34" amzn.to/49kJQth
Very Nice home network, no such thing as overkill in your home. I am on my way building an over the top home network not with Unifi. Thanks for sharing your setup.
Fantastic setup! Terry, you need to snag some of the new UniFi AI Ports for your Doorbell and other non-AI UniFi cameras. (Or buy some ONVIF non-UniFi gear). Sold out right now, but keep an eye on inventory. Most people don't realize you can pair ANY UniFi or ONVIF camera to the AI Port. You are not limited to PoE cameras - so should work great even with the G4i. (The PoE daisy-chain port on the AI Port device is simply a convenience for wiring to avoid needing extra PoE ports on switches). And they are promising future upgrades will support multiple cameras with a single AI Port device! I beg to differ on one thing - UniFi cameras are not all that great. They still lack anything with color night vision sensors. As a photographer, I'm surprised you aren't sensitive to the amazing difference a $100 non-UniFi camera with a starlight color night sensor provides. Now with Protect's support for ONVIF cameras and the AI Port, time to get a second drug dealer! (translation: Start playing with some of the non-UniFi cameras - many awesome ones to choose from). I'm burying the lead: What happened to your weekly Photoshop livestreams? I am missing my fix! Have learned so much but still so much to learn. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place, but seems like both you are Jason Levine are no longer doing weekly lives?
So cool- if you want face recognition on your G4 doorbell you can add the UniFi AI port to it and through that the doorbell will gain all the AI capabilities.
Awesome setup. I'm having a house built and getting ethernet ran to every room and a few outside for POE cameras. I've been looking at Unifi, and as you mentioned, really feel intimidated. I've bounced between going big vs trying to keep it as simple as possible. Looks like your G5 PTZ camers extend beyond the gutters. That's been my main concern. 19:26 Any extra advice you'd give for a new home build? We're having AP drops in the ceiling on each floor and getting two ethernet drops in a few rooms on opposite walls.
Sounds like you’re doing it right. Don’t skimp on Ethernet and quality cabling. You’ll never regret having extra drops. Unifi has been great once you get past the initial figuring out which pieces to order. I would do it all over again. The G5 PTZ has SEVERAL mounting options. I’m using a corner mount.
I would definitely run several extra ethernet wires to the outside, either for extra cameras or outdoor access points wherever you might need them in the future. Good wire is cheap compared to the cost of running it after the house is done. I moved into a nice home built in 2020 that had runs to most rooms, but nothing outside and it has been a pain to get cat6 from the patch panel to outside. I thought I could just mount an exterior PoE switch, but then it has to be plugged in to power and hiding wires outside and keeping them weatherproof is a lot more work and hassle than just having the PoE wires pop out of the wall or soffit directly behind the camera or AP. My wife vetoed wires on the outside of the house, so I am currently planning to spend next weekend pulling wires in the attic, full of blown in insulation, to get the runs I need for two more cameras and a couple access points.
Impressive setup. I'm in yhe process of upgrading my rack now. Unifi network gear has gotten to the point where I had to consider them. I already use them for wireless (with a controller running in a docker container on my Synology Rackstation). Why not upgrade?
Thank you for this video! Had so many questions after your Reddit post. Network set up is fantastic! Unifi is coming out with the AI port to give cameras facial recognition. Your comment about the doorbell camera is spot on. If they don't upgrade the doorbell it can be added with this. Only thing it is hardwired not sure if it works with wifi cameras. Having this option on the doorbell would be nice.
Thanks! My guess is that the AI Port will only work with PoE cameras which may include the PoE version of the G4 Doorbell Pro. Yeah and WiFi cameras are probably out of luck!
@@TerryLeeWhite Hey your next video should be how to get the doorbell cam to come up on the tv with picture in picture. My Ring doorbell does that now and it's the only reason I'm still using it.

Terry isn't playing around, that's a serious rack bro, im guessing you're getting rid of that pdu soon lol, that pdu is only meant to show stats and redundancy nothing more or less. im waiting for mine as well. however, I got a question for you on your modem. When you gave your mac address to your isp did they see it immediately or did you also give the additional 6 alpha numeric numbers that's on the modem. my isp never saw my modem and the tech guy that came over said that the modem could be faulty, now why didn't I RMA the modem instead of just sending it back and buying a new one. something I didn't realize just wasted 40 bucks on restocking fee thats a bummer. I hope this new one works.
When I setup the modem I entered the full MAC address in the Xfinity app and it saw it immediately. Be mindful that there are TWO MAC addresses. I was careful to use the one for the ISP/COAX and not the one for the Ethernet port. It worked first time and I haven't had to touch it since.
Terry you have a very impressive home network but I did see a home assistant green and I am wondering why your not using that as your main smart home system and then expose your devices from home assistant to apple home That way you can see everything abs not have to worry about the homekit bridge
@TerryLeeWhite yeah I hear you on that i am still working on my home assistant dashboards daily but I plan to not let the big 3 be the main system in my home so I prefer home assistant And with the harmony hubs you have in there you can turn on and off the different devices that you have in that room just by hitting a switch in home assistant and it saves so much time
@@Future9 the two pieces I started with were $499 and $279, which was cheaper than the high end mesh systems out there that don’t do as much. Most of the cameras were $99-$129.
Unifi is an expensive hobby lol; great breakdown of your setup and hopefully you can get that Smart PDU Pro I got one awhile back and love it. How is the UNAS Pro? I am on the fence with that and a Synology.
There's a lot to like about the UNAS Pro, especially the ease of setup and use. I have the Synology DS1522+ as well and for storage they both do the same thing. For running other apps, Synology wins that as Unifi chose to concentrate just on storage. My only complaint with the UNAS is that there is no USB port, so no ability to plug in a backup drive or UPS for that matter. You'll need to back it up to a second NAS or cloud service (which hopefully they add more options).
Do you have any footage from one of your camera's of you raging when there's a problem with the internet? lol I would go crazy if I had this great of a setup and there was even a hiccup haha
