- DIRT BIKE TIPS: Standing Mistakes. During my schools I see and hear to common mistakes while standing. I hear student complain of legs getting to sore after few minutes and i hear of uncomfortable feeling and rider drifting to back of bike. Here is a video I put together to shed light on this and how to correct it. Please feel free to share this video on social media to any dirt bike friends and feel free to like, comment and subscribe. The old Knighter still has it. Finished 2nd to Billy Bolt at the tough one , 2021.
Rich, I've been riding and racing for over 25 years, and this single video, the visuals of the bike on the workstand, and your narration, connected more dots for me and explained more to me about weight distribution, body position, foot placement, and front end traction, than anything else I've ever seen. You're explanations of the hows and why's are spot on, and thank you for sharing them.
Thanks for the kind words

Great visual explanation ! My story is similar to others, been riding 20+ yrs. then took a 10yr. Break, now at 57 I realize I never had proper technique but got buy with youthful energy, etc..?? Now I need to ride smarter not harder, Thanks !
The instruction beginning at 6:28 in your "Standing Mistakes" really helped me apply the knowledge I gleaned from this episode. Great stuff and thank you for sharing the knowledge to create faster and safer riders.
comments like this are why I do this....we all have a common variable...we love dirt bikes..thank you
This is the one I've been looking for. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Your explanations and reasoning are spot on. I'm 72 and can't wait to get out and practice! :)
thanks appreciate your support
Wow. Fantastic video. Well done! I'm going to practice that more this weekend. I'm 6'2" and removed my bar risers last year. I've adapted, feel more in control, made the changes to correct my body positioning, and now I love the lower bars!
Awesome to hear from you ...excited for your improved riding. Thank you for your comment..any other questions ..i could help with a video..?
@@RichLaffertyRacing . Perhaps a video of going from standing to sitting position while braking before a turn. And then the shift in position coming out of a turn where you scoot your butt from up on the tank to back on the seat for traction. And is this harder with gripper seats? Thanks.... 🏁👍
Thank you these tips are awesome
Wow perfect timing for this video to pop up on my feed. I literally, tonight, put a body position reminder sticker on my gas tank (balls of feet, straight back, elbows up) but this video clarified remaining mistakes I had not yet even realized I was making. I'm getting faster, better and always trying to apply better technique. I want to stand more, but am definitely in the "my legs get tired" camp. Thanks a ton for the excellent explanation of why! New subscriber.
Thank you so much for our feedback.....keep at it. Appreciate your input.
Excellent video! The visual is invaluable! Keep up the great work!
thanks for your comment
It just goes to prove that no matter how long you’ve been riding for you can always keep learning. I don’t know if I’ve just forgotten the basics because I’m 45 now or I never even knew them to being with 😂. Either way this was a great explanation. Very useful and I’m pumped to go out and practice! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Awesome 👍 glad to help
Thanks man. I've always wondered about this. My shoulders and arms wear out super fast when I'm not thinking about what I'm doing. Good tip!
Thanks for that. Nice and informative
your welcome buddy.
Yeah I have that but this winter too
Thanks for the video Rich. Need to pay attention to that bend in my knees.
yea buddy..very common..spread the word of my videos..thanks
Great tips, thank you.
thanks rich you info is fantastic
thanks,appreciate that
Now to practice!
yes sir, thank you for your comment, when practicing any new riding technique the key is to slow down and practice the mecahnics of it over and over until it becomes second nature and no longer have to think about...if you go normal speed ypur normal habit comes into play, so slow it down and give it time....have someone if possible video you to give better feedback as to wether you are doing properly...keep me posted, appreciate your input
As always, good advice, Rich! Hard to be lazy and fast at the same time.
I see you're also getting better at producing the videos. That half the battle right there! Riding is easy, you gotta get that Spielberg hat on!
thanks brotha...more coming
Great explanation, thanks. My problem is that if I stand in the correct position, it's hard for me to look up enough.. My neck gets tired! But also, I'm very tall, which makes it worse.
Thanks Rich
thank you
I'm going to try this next ride. 70% speed and focus on techniques you listed. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm the guy that sits down to go fast which I know is completely wrong and I have to get more comfortable standing in the high speed sections.
Thanks for the knowledge brother!! Awesome videos. Subbed.
awesome, i appreciate the comment and the sub. what would you like see a video on..?
I haven’t checked all your videos but I just found a slice in my 525 and replaced it with an mx52 and now my buddies can’t agree on air pressures. One says run it 11psi because that way you can utilize the full potential of the tire. Another says 5-6 or whatever gives you a bigger footprint. What is your take?
@@BonesawTheRetired 10-12 PSI if i were to run tubes. but always run foam insert
will the front wheel deflect off rocks more with weight on the front or on the back?
Great video. I do some of those things naturally. When I first started riding I did have to concentrate on staying on the balls of my feet and keeping my heals turned out to force grip with the knees. It feels so natural now. I don't run a high bar, but do run a sub mount damper so I get a little raise. I keep the resistance low and the high speed turned up so at low speeds it doesn't feel heavy. I have the stock bars on the bike. I know some faster guys really don't like dampers. Maybe I will take mine off and see. I've not done that in a long time. I could likely switch to a flatter bend to take up for the raise, but I have not. I had not thought that it may force me back on the seat. Will have to take note of my position on the seat when I ride next. I might try and find a bar with less rise than the stock... like a low bend to put back to stock location and see how it does. I was riding with my wife (she rides a KTM200xc-w) and she was practicing standing on the roads back to camp after some single track. I noticed that she was riding with her arches on the pegs and her knees bent. I tried riding like that and noticed how easy it was to get pushed back with throttle as well as that I had to work harder to keep my head forward and weight over the front end. It felt odd for me because I had learned early on to ride on the balls of me feet. Something I don't think about, but just do these days. Thanks for the explanation. The visual of your position and the bike rocking on the stand makes a solid point!
I got problem when i stand up in give it gas it feel like the bike lets me behing so i cant Handle and i feel i fall
Sorry my english my main language isnt english
@@kapattaja5230 hey buddy..please relisten to video...yur hand positon is probally too low, and try and stand on balls of feet...
@@RichLaffertyRacing i stand on balls but i think my hands are too low
@@RichLaffertyRacing do you got any other tips so i can feel more comfortable while standing
@@RichLaffertyRacing i was riding before The video so i didnt even know these tips
Thanks for this
no problem brotha...thank you for your comment..give me some feedback on a upcoming tip you would like to see a video on...thanks,rl
Basic suspension setup and adjusting specific to off-road. Suspension Adjustments you may make going from NEPG to GNCC type racing. Cause and effect of adjustments pertaining to suspension once you have reasonable sag and spring rates
Great vid! Appreciate the tips. Would you recommend “low boy” foot pegs for taller riders?
yes absolutely
Rich, Vet B class racer 6'2", I feel like I always have so much weight on my arms and wrists when standing, my arms pump up. I can feel this sensation relax when I grip harder with my boots and legs but my bike is so slim (18 KTM 250 SXF) I find it hard to grip. Would a fatter seat or Gutz "seat wings" help give me something to lock on to? Maybe steg pegz, etc? Thanks for all the tips/
1:45 What gut? It helps with counter-balance
Great video, thanks! Curious when you mentioned David Knight, why did you say "hate to bring him up"?
Thanks, didnt wanna use his name without actually knowing the dude. Just trying be respectful. Thanks your comment.
Rich, what about shifting technique while standing? If I’m back on the balls of my feet maintaining that attack position, I can’t reach the lever without sliding my foot back forward or lifting it completely. Wasn’t sure if there is a better way or if that is standard practice? Thanks!
yes, its balls of feet but then to operate foot controls come forward and use then back to balls of feet. Thanks
