Fun fact, the reason she loves doughnuts is because in Japanese folklore, a Kitsune (Fox Spirit) who possesses a girl in particular, tends to make them crave sweets. : )

Kiriko's mom (Asa) is also Hanzo and Genji's sensei, so seeing her daughter handle business is like a kind of graduation for her.
Wait so is she from a branch family of the Shimada Clan then? Generally those types of studies are done in-clan traditionally, because of obvious information leak problems otherwise potentially
@@skebaba918 I'm going to say yes. They're at least so close that kiriko has green hair like genji (I assume dyed since in her origin she doesn't), and in game kiriko questions genji about a bowl cut, which he says he did to make HER feel better about having one.
@@skebaba918 I'm pretty sure Kiriko's family was part of the Shimada clan, and thus Kiriko grew up and trained alongside the Shimada brothers. She was closer to Genji than Hanzo, only because he knew to have fun.
@@skebaba918 since the shimadas was a Yakuza clan it makes sense for kirikos family to be a "family" under the clan, since clans usually have different families/subsidiaries under them. This leads me to believe her mom was likely the head/leader of the kiriko family since she's close enough to be training the shimadas brothers (Hanzo and Genji) in which Hanzo was to be the next clan head/leader

Fun fact, the guy with the big pompadour hair wanting to call for back up, is the same guy from Hanzo's Cinematic short who ran into a bell while trying to call for back up there too.
Kiriko's short is definitely one of my favorites now, I love her character how she is very friendly and caring but is completely ruthless when it comes to protecting innocent people.
I really want Mr. Pompadour to show up for a 3rd cinematic, still part of the badguys, but have him be super suspicious and nervous the whole time. And as soon as the hero character shows up to stop them, he's like "Nope! NOPE! Not again! I got my face smashed into a BELL! I got kicked in the face! I had a crazy axe girl hurl a hatchet at my head and ruin my hair!! Whatever is about to happen, I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!! I QUIT! I'm going back home and help my mom with the grocery store! It's not worth it!!" And just walks off screen, still ranting as he does so. And have the entire gang and hero just kind of freeze, watching him exit stage left in a dramatic flounce. I want to see that so much.

@@vodengc520 Yeah, even continue the joke of him juggling the phone (rule of 3), and have it be him, as he's leaving, pulling out his phone to call his mom to say he's coming home. Depending on the powers of the hero in the cinematic, maybe they even catch the phone for him so he can leave, because they're perfectly fine with him just quitting what he's doing.

I loved the inclusion of having a deaf character in this cinematic. I also love that they chose to have them communicate via Japanese Sign Language vice American Sign Language.

Fun fact:when kiriko hits the fire extinguisher the song says “look away” and kiriko actually looks away details like these make the cinematic even better
As the song is mostly in japanese, I'm pretty sure it's not "look away" but "doko e" (pronounced: doh-koh-eh) which means "where to ?" if I'm not mistaken.

In canon, after the Shimada Clan fell (Hanzo and Genji respectively) the Hashimoto Clan took over the area with an iron fist, Kiriko and her friends decided to band together to fight back to reclaim the area. Also Kiriko's mother was the one to teach Hanzo and Genji swordsmanship when they were younger, so Kiriko knows them.

It's worth adding that the arches are Kiriko's ultimate in the game and it powers all her allies standing in it (faster shooting, movement, and reload time). As such, the video shows how it empowers even innocent civilians to combat readiness.
Kiriko's ultimate also accelerates the cooldown speed of abilities to, so quick abilities like Moira's orbs or Roadhog's hook are on rapid fire mode.

In the game her ultimate ability creates a road in front of her with those blue archways, and being on that road makes her teammates move and attack much faster, so I guess it inspires fighting spirit in others even little girls and old janitors xD
Man Kiriko is a fox you don’t want to mess with and her combat was so flawless 😄 also it seems amazing that the song that plays during her dear daredevil fight is catchy with the blows given to the enemy

Fun fact Hanzo, Genji and Kiriko trained together when they were younger, would be very cool to see they fighting together as adults
@McHutao To be fair, that is literally her Ultimate in-game; creates a path in front of her, allies following that path get increased movement, attack, and reload speed.
Been there in game as Kiriko, and Genji is such a flanking oriented character that I have to put effort into healing him, meanwhile Hanzo is usually on the point with me. No shame on Genji players, I have a teleport for a reason but I generally don't put effort into healing flankers unless I'm on Discord with them (I'm a trans woman and the default Blizzard voice connection is so absurdly bigoted, not just transphobic, but racist, sexist, and homophobic too)
Bethany's natural reaction to the wrong being done to the innocent speaks to her heroic spirit. Kiriko was able to deliver what she was feeling!

This is the character I play most often, I love how they absolutely show off what you can do in the best circumstances. Most of the time you're just throwing out healing scrolls, but I bought the K-Pop skins so I'm mostly throwing out healing Concert Tickets and Disco ball cleansing grenades.

i love the analysis of the bad guy in shock, i think he wouldn't care as much if this was someone who was shooting back at him but it was a unarmed innocent person he just wanted to threaten for information

it's probably all been explained really well by now but just in case:
kiriko's mum is a great sword fighter she is one of the ppl who taught hanzo and genji when they were young. kiriko also trained with them so they are like family friends they see her as a little sister/niece type figure. kiriko learned to use blades (kunai) from her mum and healing skills from her grandmother. that paper that dissolved into the grandad is a healing charm. the hashimoto are an infamous crime syndicate and rivals to the shimada (dragon brothers family clan). kiriko is also possessed by the kitsune (fox spirit). the fox spirit is essentially like the gate keeper to the spirit world/underworld almost like a cross between the grim reaper and spirit of vengeance. at the end she summons the torri gates (spirit gates) and forms that path which channels spirit energy. any ally on that path also channels energy hence why the kid and grandad got braver and stronger. the western equivalent would be the grim reaper summoning phantoms to chase u... terrifying. oh and ppl possessed by the kitsune in ancient lore are said to have an insatiable sweet tooth hence the doughnuts

This trailer always makes me tear up
The animation is always great with these cinematics... Say what you want about Blizzard but they know how to do this, which bring me to the point: They should REALLY give credits to the animation team after their cinematics. They are more or less what brings people back to Blizzard usually.
My personal favorite part of this video (animation-wise) is just a very small thing, but when the little girl says that because Kiriko saved her grandpa, she is fine... You can SEE all the thoughts going through her head through her facial expressions. It's just not a "pause, side-glance, answer", there is so much more going on in that girls mind to try and express such a simple feeling of gratitude on such an emotional level. The whole animation is great, but that small part with that adorable little girl always gets me. Great job animation team.
I feel like they do. The animation team always gets praise for their work as far as I can tell. The problem is making a sweet CGI movie doesn't really matter in the long term as far as a game goes and the general audience doesn't really care about animation studios if they're not making knockout movies. I mean how many people even know Blur Studios even exist even though they pretty much made most of the CGI game trailer that a AAA company outsource in the past decade?
@@dagonofthedepths I'm not talking about "credit" as in people saying they did a good job, I mean actual credits at the end of the animation. Actually showing the names of the people who worked on it, who did what and so on. I never mentioned anything about making a CGI movie, tho I would be lying if I said I did not want it.
@@Zindoriffic Oh sorry by movie, I mean the shorts. Even an intro cinematic to a game is what I was referring to there. But yeah, it would be nice to have credits, but it is Blizzard, and they really haven't been doing right by their people. At this point I'd rather they just have good working conditions first and stop being so greasy.
Definitely and definitive on my top 3 as well! I absolutely loved it! The was heartfelt, epic, funny AND hilarious! Def a good make up from the Junker Queen one which was a bit underwhelming.

Not sure if you recognize, but the gangster with the pompadour hairdo was also in a previous Overwatch cinematic, “Dragons”.
He was the goof that ran into the giant bell in a panic when his phone was shot out of his hand by Hanzo.
Guy just couldn’t catch a break. Not that he deserved one… 😂

Not gonna lie I've never been a huge OW fan but as SOON as I get a console again I'm downloading this game because of the quality of this short
I feel like having a mom who can use "You do know I have a sword, right?" as an argument probably doesn't lose too many of those xD
Also the guy in the mask (which I think is an oni mask) who ends up shooting the grandpa gives of rather strong vibes of being most likely new to the gang he is with, I'd say he is either new or has mostly experienced ppl being pushovers because of the gangs reputation (hence why he repeats the name) and in both of those cases I feel it's probably unlikely that he has ever killed someone before, or at least not by his own hand which is probably why he reacts so strongly too it. It's rather common that ppl in those kinda circumstances can be showing off to appear tough and then when the magnitude of something like that finally sinks in some of them just actually can't cope with it to well. I don't know how it works for japanese street gangs or organized crime but for quite a few of the organized groups that do extortion and money lending stuff the main tactic is that you wanna scare ppl into paying without having to resort to killing them as a dead customer is not gonna be a repeat customer.
Kiriko is an amazing addition to the support team

Every overwatch characters animation is just as good as a Pixar movie, animation is always great and the story is the best.

I like the bad guys weren't all idiots, like the guy who was trying to call for backup, that was likely the smarter call, it wouldn't have helped but he was at least smart enough to know they might be in trouble.
Despite the fact that the launch of the game has been abysmal, and the business practices just scream greedy executives have their hands all over the game. I've been enjoying the actual gameplay changes of Overwatch 2 SO much. Kiriko is absolutely my favorite support character to play, and has gotten me more into the role then any other hero. She's such a good mix of being a great support character when the team needs her and a decent DPS character to get some sneaky picks when they don't need the healing. Her gameplay of being able to teleport around the map is so satisfying when getting out of bad situations or going in deep with your team to help clean up the enemy team. Kiriko, Junker Queen, and Sojourn have all knocked it out of the park with the amount of fun I've had with them easily.
When is Microsoft sale going through? They need to keep the writing and animation team for the shorts and just fire everyone else it seems 🤔
I didn't really think of the horror in his face being from shooting the old man but seeing Kiriko doing supernatural things for the first time. It's after he got shot that she started teleporting around in front of them. But that's a cool aspect that I hadn't thought of

Kiriko's fun to play in the game. Doesn't do all the punching and kicking, but she does throw those knives (called kunai) to good effect if they land in the face lol.

Kiriko is the character that flat out confirms magic existing in the world. Hanzo and Genji definitely hinted at it, but they still kept it vague enough that we couldn't be sure. Kiriko is just straight up saying that she has a mystical fox spirit possessing her.
Technically, the dev's said there is no magic in OW. So it's probably mostly just scientific things we just can't explain. But honestly... It's magic. Honorable mention to Zenyatta... Which is using whatever the Iris is doing.
@@gerardlacroix6015 the devs can say whatever they want, but the character is literally saying she has an inherited spirt companion that grants her mystical powers, and we see it following the grandma before her. I'll take the character's word over the devs, especially when there is canon evidence.
@@graveyardshift2100 To be the devil's advocate on this. It's not because the character says something, that it is what it is. If the Dev's said there is no magic, then Kiriko just believes it is magic, dosen't make it so tho'. It's just that she dosen't exactly know what it is, and what is the fox spirit, so she thinks it's magic, while it very well may be explicable through science.
But, like I've said previously, them saying there is no magic, but without giving explanations, is a weak attempt to try to make it more complicated than it is.
Without explanation, even for the public, it looks like magic, behave like magic, so it is magic.

Kiriko walked in with three boxes of Fox Festival Donuts. She also justified her diet to her mother when she said that the Fox Spirit that grants her powers regulates the sugar in her body so the sugar doesn't really affect her. Presumably it regulates more than just sugar intake being a Healing Spirit and all. It would also not surprise me if Kiriko actually needs that immense sugar intake for her body to fuel the Fox Spirit.
Kiriko has a ragtag group called yokai.
Kiriko wears a kitsune mask, while others wear masks based on a tanuki, amabie, kappa, kasa-obake, and oni, respectively.
Kiriko mom brought the pizza where kiriko brought 3 boxes of donuts
All the short take place in maps that are in the game. I like that detail.
I absolutely adore Kiriko! They really outdid themselves with her character development. There are a ton of subtleties to her design that are faithful to the folklore too.
Many people touched base on a lot of those details. If you were confused or just kinda wondering why the girl went absolutely ballistic at the end... Kiriko's ultimate ability is Kitsune Rush. It summons a fox spirit that rushes forward through those gates she summoned and It accelerats the movement, attack speed, and cooldowns of allies that follow its path. This was showing her ult in action!
The mum would be considered controlling or forceful but only people who had such a mum know it’s all love and care

So this one is going on my favorite list of Overwatch trailers with "Honor and Glory," "Kiriko," "Dragons," "Shooting Star," "Rise and Shine," "Infiltration," "Reunion," "Hero," and "Recall." So I thing you should do your own list. So my little is not in order other then Honor and Glory, but Kiriko is in the dog house because my daughter walked into kitchen and ask to see what I was watching. So I got down no the floor and started the video over again and now Blizzard Entertainment better made a stuff fox or there will be heck to pay. See saw it and everyone could of died horrible at that moment and she would not blink an eye. So like her mom. Loved the reaction. A note Karen thought that you both where mad at Kiriko when the grandfather was shot, I fixed that she knows who you where mad at now. So STAY SAFE and have a great day. 👍

This was such a great video to watch! I loved that bad guy's line of, "I don't want to get kicked in the face. I'm going to call for backup!" It was just so funny. I doubt those guys will mess with the grampa or the little girl ever again. Lastly, I don't know if you noticed but your green shirt was pretty close to the color of her green hair. Lol!

Kiriko is fun to play. Don’t think I’m getting the best out of her yet but dropping kitsune rush on that final push to complete the objective is immensely satisfying.
