Agh! I was asleep in dreary Aus when this was uploaded. I worked in a factory with a man who had every Red Dwarf episode from the 90's. As per usual your spot on 'what did happen with the makeup'.! 😂💚
Never been a fan of the s9 onwards Rimmer being the one who became Ace theory. I like to believe that, at the end of s8, Kryten's Nano bots fixed the ship and restored it to the original design like it was in Back to Earth. Rimmer does die, but when he's brought back as a hologram, he has the memories of the original Rimmer but from the last time he backed himself up to the computer before they lost the ship, so it's a mix of s8 Rimmer and the original but only up to series 5, hence why in the Dave era he lacks his s6/7 development and why he's in the old uniform design. I'm guessing Kryten retained the information from the events of Legion on how to make Rimmer Hard light.
Yeah, Timewave never really sit well with me either. Eliminating criticism and "giving everyone a trophy" is not something kids themselves ask for, it's something done by the selfish parents who want their kids (and by extension themselves) to be special. I also notice that a lot of the bad behavior that they want to criticize seems to be art related. I wonder if the creators had bad experience with new-agey art colleges shortly before making this episode.
If the episode had one redeeming feature, it was the appearance of Rimmer's INNER CRITIC. Rimmer's messed up subconscious always made for great comedy, right from the first series.
This is a solid video, I always enjoy your Red Dwarf coverage. Also thank you for the well deserved kicking you gave Timewarp. I hate that 'entitled' generation argument.

@@DiamandaHagan Oof, you poor thing! Yeah if you go back to the series 1 episode which became the spawning idea for Shaun Of The Dead you see the character Vulva wearing the kit.
It's a shame that "Skipper" missed the opportunity to have Rimmer land in a universe where everyone is just an actor on some science fiction comedy series.
So my headcanon for Rimmer post Series 8: He's both. He somehow manages to die in the off-screen "Series 9" referenced in Back to Earth so they re-created him as a hologram. Only they had two Rimmer files - the one from the original Red Dwarf who became Ace and the one who just died. The two files got merged in the process because the system was never meant to have a hologram of a crewmember active while they were alive combined with all the weird upgrades done to the original Rimmer hologram over the years - from the light bee from the Nova 5 to the hard light from Legion plus whatever upgrades Ace might have done when he transferred the Ace "persona" over. So when Rimmer died in "Series 9", there were two Rimmer files in the system - one for S1-7 Rimmer and one for "The End" and S8 Rimmer. The system would then load both of those files and merge them into one. And yes, I have a long, detailed, technobabble-filled explanation for how this actually works but I think I've hit my quota for over-thinking the show for one comment.
Why does no one ever mention the spacesuits in the beginning of time wave direct copies from space 1999 with the Jupiter mining corps patches stuck on the front

Timewave feels like an attempt to do something like Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron; that is satirize the desire for justice or equality by showing a dystopia where either concept has been pursued to absurd length. When done right, like Harrison Bergeron, such satire can be thought provoking as well as entertaining. Here it is just a case of old boomers tilting at millenial windmills. The episode Justice, from season 4, did all this much better even if you ultimately disagreed with Lister's conclusion at the end.

The "participation trophy" thing has never made sense. Everybody I know who got trophies and ribbons and awards for shit they didn't earn stuck them in a closet or in the attic or something and only kept the ones where they accomplished something. You know who DID want and demand all those trophies? OUR BOOMER PARENTS. The participation trophy thing really amazes me. One, it was pushed by companies to make money so its pure capitalism which I don't understand why it gets attached to socialism/communism. And B, all they taught me was how useless trophies, awards, and titles are.
I'd never heard of it happening in real life, it's like Boomers were so pissy they invented something to hate the next generation over but invented something that was their fault (if it happened) because they awarded the fucking things.
