Outline & Notes 👇📝 0:00 - Morning 1:17 - Mantra 5:22 - Deep Work Session 1 8:07 - Social media and guitar 9:53 - Exercise 13:03 - Shower 16:48 - Deep Work Session 2 19:30 - Eating 25:03 - Shallow Work Session 28:21 - Reading 0:00 - Morning --- Sleep = 6-8h/night 30 min. power nap during the day. Lex sometimes does sprints, pulling all-nighters. Sleep. Diet. Exercise. --- the essentials for productivity Add passion and whatever else you need to do be happy and keep your stress levels low. 1:17 - Mantra --- Lex has a list containing all of this: 1. Rules & constrains 2. Gratitude 3. Long-term goals 4. Short-term goals 5. Visualize the day 6. Core principles *1. Rules & constrains* - A constant reminder on the current set of rules, constrains, various addictions, time-draining things. Example: social media - He only checks social media when he posts content. No more than 10 minutes. Very important to control. You can also remove yourself from SM entirely. This really brings him joy. He makes sure he exercises every single day. He has a strict diet that he follows. Keto. But he also makes sure to balance things out and eat food he enjoys as well. This is the first part of the mantra. *2. Gratitude* Visualize and meditate on the idea that he might die today. Mostly just breathing in and out. Then pause. Life is amazing. *3. Long-term goals* Ambitions, big goals that he would like to achieve in the next 5 years. He does this out loud. *4. Short-term goals* By the end of 2020 I want to do X. These might be sometimes out of reach, but achievable. _If I really work my butt off, then this is really possible. Let's get to work._ *5. Visualize the day* He literally tries to visualize himself going through the day. Think about a game of Sims you are playing and moving your characters on fast-forward. Both the struggles and focusing on the timing and the beat of the day. *6. Core principles* - Compassion. Empathy. Love Character. Integrity. Strength. Both physical and mental. 5:22 - Deep Work Session 1 --- 4 hour session of deep work. No interruptions. If an idea tries to derail him, he fights it and leaves it aside for later processing. Ideas will always keep coming. Interruptions allowed: water, coffee, bathroom Tries to limit those as much as he can. Ideal: 1 He uses an autonomous standing desk. Sometimes he sits, sometimes he stands. Doesn't wear a suit at home. *SETUP* - 3 monitors - ergonomic keyboard from Kinesis - Emacs editor Drained but happy at the end of the session. 8:07 - Social media and guitar --- Posts podcast. Checks comments from the previous day. The whole experience should be under 10 minutes. 20 minutes guitar and piano session. Music in general. Every single day. 9:53 - Exercise --- 1-2 hours of suffering AKA exercise. Long run. Listens to brown noise while he runs. 2-3 miles into the run ---> switches to an audiobook Currently listening to a book called _Rise and Fall of the Third Reich_ If you do not study history, you are doomed to repeat it. *Current exercise routine* --- - runs a minimum of 6 miles every day - 3-4 miles in he decides how far he wants to go - he usually doesn't feel like running, but he does it anyway and he ends up feeling really good This takes about 1 hour. After that he does a session of body-weight exercises. Now he does the David Goggings inspired Nickel And Dime Workout. 5 pull-ups & 10 push-ups every minute Does 15-20 minutes of that. Hard on the mind, body, but good for the soul. He also does fasting. 14-16 hours. Loves to exercise while fasting. This is a personal preference. Everybody is different. Never forget that. 13:03 - Shower --- Cold shower for the first minute. Plays a 1-minute long song to support the grind. During the shower he thinks about what the next step he should focus on his second deep work session. 16:48 - Deep Work Session 2 --- Another 4-hour session where he continues a particular task, focused for 4 hours straight. Focus on being present. If things do not seem to work. Stay in there. It will come. Some minutes are rough, and the rest are full of bliss. 19:30 - Eating --- He usually eats 2 times per day. He does fasting 14-16 hours. He is currently on Keto diet. 'Suits' his current situation. He eats meat and vegetables. About 2 pounds of meat, 1800-2000 calories per meal. Grass Fed Ground Beef as an example. Cauliflower for veggies. Goes crazy with the carrots sometimes. Party vegetable. Electrolytes. Sodium pills. 1000 mg in pill form. Potassium pills. Magnesium glycinate. Fish oil. First 2 days of Keto brought him headaches. Listen to your body. This is not medical advice. 25:03 - Shallow Work Session --- 4-hour session of relaxed work. E-mail check 3 times per day tops. Video editing. Website design. Hang out with friends. Opens terminal. IF girlfriend THEN girlfriend time. No girlfriend yet. Where are you BTW? Throws in some documentaries, Netflix. He is human. Few distractions. Few breaks. A big fan of a random adventure. 28:21 - Reading --- 2+ hours of reading. 1 hour = scientific paper 1+ of literature (fiction/non-fiction) Every single day he reads at least 1 paper. He is currently reading GPT-3 related papers. He thinks deeply while reading. What are the deep questions to ask? 1+ of literature (fiction/non-fiction) - Right now he is reading the major novels of Dostoyevsky. Does this on the desk or on the bed. After the reading session he takes a pause and does the part of the mantra he did in the morning. ... _END_ Thank you for reading! *Please note that these are some quick notes I took out of Lex's video essay. You should watch the full video for additional golden nuggets and the extended version of each idea! Lex, if you are reading this, thank you for helping me upgrade my world views. I really appreciate what you do. You inspired me to take a more systemic approach while working on _my RUclips channel_ (Robert Blanc) and on my personal research as well. Pretty good thing to learn I did when I was younger just because the worst things that could happen tend to happen without fail so being ready for it dose wonders even if it doesn't come also let's you appreciate the time you have
I used to be the superintendent where Lex had an apartment years ago. Nicest, most cooperative guy, a modest, unassuming dude. Who knew there was a force of nature dwelling in our midst. Since discovering this channel, I have had many hours listening to these consistently brilliant podcasts. Thanks, Lex!
To all those who compare their unproductive daily lives to Lex's and feel like potatoes, do not forget: *Both* Lex's parents are world-class Lomonosov-trained physicists that raised him in an environment highly attuned to optimal intellectual achievement. So he really had the *best* advantages in both nature and nurture to become the intellectual productivity 'beast' that he is today. If you want to admire him for something, then admire him for his empathy, relatability, humbleness and likeability. That IMHO is his big achievement.
I want to politely criticize the nature of this comment. This is not a good line of thinking at all, in my opinion. Making excuses (however legitimate they may be), is not a good justification for not reaching your own goals. The vast majority of us have the ability to achieve what Lex has achieved and we should not diminish what he has achieved because of his upbringing.
While your comment does bring some context, i will provide my 2 cents for the ppl that may take this is an excuse to fall back on their attempts to be as productive. 1. David goggins bio 2. In a family of high performers their children may either be the same or the exact positive( twin’s studies) 3. Personal example, my father is a high performer, my mother is the exact opposite. I struggle and struggled to become as productive but i get closer and closer everyday. It fundamentally needs the correct mindsets and comprehension of what matters, what really makes us happy.
Mark my words! This video is an asset for those alive and many others to come who seek a practical example to discipline & improve themselves. You're leaving a legacy, Lex.
I feel accomplished when I get In 2 hours of what he calls “shallow work”. 1 year update, damn I totally didn’t notice this comment blowing up. I started a business and I’m doing quite well! My work ethic is still no where near Lex’s though 😅.
And you know what, if that's good for you then kudos. We all aren't built for going the one speed. For example, I'm an endomorph, and I keep active to and run 3 times a week, including a 10k run (6.2 miles in old money). I don't run at the pace Lex does though. I've tried it and I just get injured. I run it a little slower, but still get the miles done and I have no injuries. I'm not saying Lex can't inspire people or they can't take something away from this, but there's too much BS in the world today about people feeling inadequate and trying keep up with other people. One major life lesson I have learned: run your own race. Don't try and run someone else's race. Do it in your own time and you'll still get there.
@@catsaresocute650 we all go through life different ways friend. It’s no use comparing, you’re the only one who can judge you. I disagree wholeheartedly with a common feel good saying “you’re perfect just the way you are”. I think no one is, how boring would that be! The biggest help for me over the past few months has been, MOVE FIRST, THINK SECOND. Example: a thought pops into your head. “I should go to the gym”. Before you start thinking about wether or not you actually want to go to the gym, you start performing the nearest actionable step. In my case, writing down “look at gyms” on my phone. Example 2: you come home from a looooong day, you’re in bed already and suddenly think “oh shit I still have to brush my teeth”. Move your body first, then think. You can decide that you’re actually too tired and can bother missing a day, but only AFTER you’ve performed the smallest actionable step. Getting out of bed, or even sitting up straight in bed. Hope this helps! No one is perfect and no one has to be, this has helped em tremendously to get those nagging chores out of the way. The amount of time I usually spend THINKING about chores and other tedious tasks, far outweighs the amount of time the tasks actually take! Which is kind of crazy. But by MOVING FIRST, THINKING SECOND, you get over that initial hump. This is all just a game of recognizing your own unconscious habits and altering them if you want.
@@paulbarclay4114 see he's making us question if there's a reverse Turing test that could convince a human got another human is, in fact, not a human but an artificial intelligence....
In this day and age being a machine is a compliment. Machines dont stress, they do all their work without a problem, theyre far smarter/do far more work than humans etc
@@nebulousisgod I don't agree that Lex is "very controlled with his emotions" at least not in the way that you seem to be meaning... I think he shows emotion, vulnerability, and sensitivity, compassion, love, more than most any male I've seen (you don't necessarily have to shed tears to show emotion). And it's extremely courageous. His emotional intelligence appears to be off the charts. He really gets the humanity of people, he sees right into their heart, and shows that he deeply cares. Not only does he show the soft/vulnerable side of his nature...he does show anger too... but he is slow to anger (wisely, as one should be). For example, I could see that he was angry with Kanye toward the end of the recent interview...but he does so with "elegance" and still maintaining respect toward others. Again, you could see that as controlled, as I suppose most everyone is in the public eye-- but I don't see it in the way you seem to have meant... ~Peace and best regards....
@@mbrights3158 You nailed it, he has an intense sense of both self-awareness and emotional intelligence. He expresses himself openly and honestly, but not necessarily through the wide verbal inflections we associate with "emotional" people. His tone is controlled, but the intent behind what he says is very nuanced, kind, and thoughtful.
He is robotic tho. That doesnt mean complete robot, no emotion, nu humanness, ofcourse not, he seems like a nice guy. But voice, facial movements and way of speaking and thinkng DOES remind slightly of a robot its just true :'D robot-ic
Folks would be very surprised to learn how quickly our bodies and mind sync up to a routine like this. After one month, the body has a learned mind of it's own and the routine feels natural and effortless. He's living in a state of perpetual spiritual bliss, and he deserves it. Any person that is THIS commited to self improvement and discipline, for the sake of continuing to do the most good possible, deserves perpetual enlightenment.
@StankyT Dropping a comment here so I get a notification when you come back with an update. I'm not holding my breath though, lol. I've lived long enough to know that spur-of-the-moment inspiration isn't sustainable.
I've watched this video so many times... Every time I stray off the right path, I always know this video will give me the hope, the motivation, the drive to get back into the grind.
I just read this after making a similar comment. I keep coming back to rewatch, as I tend to get lazy and stray of the path of being in control of my life.
7 hours of sleep 30 min mantra 4 hours deep work 30 min social media and guitar 90 min exercise 20 min shower and getting ready 4 hours deep work 30 min eating 4 hours shallow work 1 hour of reading Total 23.5 hours No distractions, no friends, no family, no phone calls, no household, no shopping, no commute.
I tried it, After workout ur kinda drained so the second deep work session is really hard. The focus is just not there for an hour. After the eating part i just wanted to lay down and scroll on social media but mostly got shallow work done for 3 hours. My sleep was 7.5 hours. My routine is still the same its just that the second deep work session is only two hours because i just feel drained and then i take a short 20 min nap followed by 30 min of watching youtube videos. The last part you mentioned is true for me too, no human interaction except in the kitchen. It'll pay off, pretty soon. Goodluck to u as well.
@@Hayden22464 that's still pretty good man. As someone fresh out of uni and without a developed routine and disciplined self respect attitude to my day, I already admire that routine you have build. How is it coming along 8 months after your comment? have you found more energy and focus, or found ways to optimize it?
damn, I am a software engineer and I understand the deep focus, the grind and how hard it can be to be in the zone. I do 2x4h sessions of programming and then I am done for the day. I allow myself to be lazy without any schedule, I might play piano, I might exercise, I might watch youtube for the rest of the day. This here is something different. The guy lives like a monk. The focus, the diet, the exercise. I might try to do more.
I feel this, I'm quite under the impression that when anyone says "I might try to do more" it's really not likely to make changes. Habits are hard to destroy and form, to try implement discipline to get to this level there needs to be a strong desire, "might" or "I hope I can" or "maybe I'll" just isn't the self talk that's gonna getcha anywhere, shits not easy fr
"Just taking a break, taking a pause.... Breathing.... And just saying damn: Its good to be alive - Because I won't always be alive. The ride ends too quickly" ~ Lex Fridman
This schedule makes me love this guy! How a disciplined life he lives ! When so many young people addict to social media and waste time! Wish more of my students would appreciate this
It is more like genetics and personality traits. This guy is probably very high in industriousness, on of the big five. It wasn't chosen, or worked for, it was given. Combine this with high IQ and you're good to go.
@@cl1mbat1ze i actually think everyone can achieve it, it just takes a while to develop, like a muscle. So i mean, a person who doesn't have grit won't be able to achieve that, but that's just a matter of not wanting it enough imo haha

@@raumerherr1057 yes! Actually… I have consistently implemented a few things into my life. I have woken up at 5:45 and set time aside to be still in prayer every morning instead of grabbing my phone and coffee and I have worked out every day at least 30 minutes, aside from a few days when I was sick. I’m still no where near Lex status.
lex, your childish excitement about everything in life is amazing. By being "childish" you are able to be excited by everything in life and motivated. Big inspiration!
I love that Lex defiantly enjoys playing the most serious character of himself - but simultaneously sees the humor in it. Extremely intelligent and funny at the same time. I enjoy watching you break into a slightttt smile when you explain the ways you enjoy torturing yourself. I can empathize with that.
I finally got the sleep part down, I started exercising too in the evening so the diet part was the last and most important problem for me. I love to eat and it's been hard to discipline myself. I recently signed up for the Freshly pre-made meal plan to help me control that aspect. I'm an IT guy and sit in front of my computer for a living. I've been working from home and have had more time to focus on improving myself. I really appreciate this video, Lex. You're a really driven guy and an inspiration. Heck, you're like the civilian version of Jocko Willink.
I love Lex, he looks like a very advanced hybrid AI-Human experiment that was exposed to the world and his podcast looks like a way to the AI improve itself with knowledge. The greatest quality about him that i don't see anybody metion is self-awareness, and i know for sure that his self-awareness is a huge source of suffering and growth at the same time.
@Lucas Pinho Yes, it is, I'm the same way & it's also lonely because most people don't think like this. He's not only self-aware but culturally & historically aware which makes it all even more intense.
12 hours of work, 2 hours of reading, 30 mins of food, 30 mins of Guitar and Social Media, 2 hours of exercise, 1 hour for mantra, shower. 18 hours of grind. That leaves 6 for sleep. Well oiled machine, Lex. Absolute legend. I will be like you. Coyle Boyd
Thank you for doing the math, towards the end of the video I was doubting there were enough hours in the day to fit all of these activities. It doesn’t leave much room for family, friends, hobbies, video games and just plain _slacking_, because, yes, that’s a thing my brain needs from time to time.
Also 6 hours of sleep is just not suficent... I dislike such daily routines big time because they are just not healthy -despite the fact one might think so due to the amount of training in it.
Lex, no matter who your guest is-I always think of you as the biggest draw. The way you are, is just so unique. Truly, you are the most fascinating of all. Thank you so much for sharing that you actually set aside time for deep thinking, and that you consider it very important. I had never heard such an idea. I’ve been walking this path for a half-century-and have had it hammered into me that my thinking is too deep and frequent. It would have never occurred to me to see it from that beautiful perspective. Thank you.
This is so much more motivating than any “motivation video,” because you’re just showing that you get a lot done in a way that seems accessible and you’re still happy and enjoying life
I'm in a deep funk and you've lifted me out of it. I love the ETHIC and discipline you have. It reminds me of the words of Viktor Frankl about the idea of having a core, unassailable control of how you control your response. I've been in a weird place of resentfulness, jealousy, anxiety and I'm inspired by the fortitude you have. It suggests to me that if I live by my ethic/code, one that is properly defined to do the best you can for yourself and the world; I will have done my due and I should be cool with myself.
What I like the most about you, and listening to you, is your innocence. I feel it. That's beautiful. I don't doubt that you must accomplish 1001 things a day, but your innocence, your passion, your determination, that is nourishing for me.
I've watched this video several times, as I have organized my life using your routine as a basic structure. It seems that over time, I lose focus and get lazy, which is when I re-watch this video to get grounded and to reset my daily routine again. You are such an inspirational individual, and I send my love and kindest thoughts to you for putting in the effort to make these podcasts so helpful, insightful and encouraging to anyone wanting to take control of their lives.
I was starting to get to know about him recently, through Joe Rogan's podcasts. I have watched few of his videos before this and quiet like them to be blunt, but this particular video really made me realise and appreciate his hardwork and grind. Discipline like this has always been my goal, and I have been told by the people around me that it was not humane to try so hard, that made me doubt myself wheter am I chasing the wrong goal or not. Seeing him living on such values with such discipline put me on my track. I am more than grateful, thank you for sharing such personal insight of your life. It means a lot.
He's using sports performance psychology. It works. Got me through grad school. However when routines go out of whack it all crashes unless a new routine is built and modified for the changes. This is very very helpful for ADD folks. I'm sure he gradually built up to the 4hr session consciously or sub- consciously. Seems like he found his sweet spot of 4hr being his limit for flow.
There's something about the calm way in which he talks about his day and the fact that he is so insanely accomplished that makes this sound more achievable. I've heard a lot of these things before and have tried some as well, but hearing Lex talk about how he structures his day is the most motivated I've felt to actually push to change.
Love the 2x deep work sessions! As a mom of 2 young kids, I practically have 6 hours available "by myself". I love it when I can fit in a 2x 2 hrs of deep work. Or 1x4 hrs. I spread my reading through the non deep (with the family, when I'm not cooking, or cleaning or playing with the boys). Yoga or walk in between. Having said this, thanks to the pandemie that I can read and do deep work without the hussle of traffic (or nice coffee chit chat in the pantry in the office). I think companies should recognise and empower deep work.
Inspirational. Wish I had that kind of discipline. Being single with no kids is great Lex. I remember those days when I had the discipline to stick to routines similar to this. As a single father and a senior, it's not easy to maintain a strict schedule or even have the motivation. Your video has inspired me though to get back to the old (young) me. Thanks!
I just read about Alderian psychology and from what i learned, I can say that you are using your kids (and probably wife too) as an excuse not to do the things you believe you should/want to be doing. Because being disciplined, being hard, its tough. And you'd rather say to yourself "I have my family so I dont have time to exercise or take that extra gig or study a new field Im interested in" instead of doing the hard work. Its not because of circumstance. Its because you just dont wamt to be better.
Lex Fridman: I work out, I'm hard working, I'm knowledgeable, I'm humble, I'm loving and IM SINGLE!!! As always an excellent video, Lex, you're inspiring all of us to be happier and be better. Would love a video on your system of reading papers.
Hey lex, don't know if you'll see this but thanks for this video and for all work you have done to provide us with great insightful podcasts to listen to and learn from. I have started to listen to you this year (early 2022) and you have made a positive impact in my life. I am also a inteovert and find social setting a bit scary but I am trying to be more social and am putting myself out there more. Thanks for this video and thanks for your work. Have a good one!
I'm so glad I found this guy, listening to him makes me realize the ideal I could never manifest as a young boy, even though I'm a 28 year old depressive, this man gives me great hope for finding the deepest meaning in my life. Thank you.
"Depression" just means you take too much time for things with "bad vibes" [sad music, sad media, sad thoughts etc.] stop it and stop thinking about shitty stuff and how indequate you may or may not be just be and let go of those thoughts its ballast you don't need if you start that negative loop again be concious about it and stop yourself like you would stop a dog shittng on your carpet. About that meaning in life thing don't overthink that you are basically the universe observing yourself the small time you are alive is an interesting ride in a somehwat intelligent monkeybody enjoy and do something fun without getting obsessed.
@@VashTheDamnFiend There is always a root for negative thoughts and those roots are inside you. Taking substances to sooth them is like taking painkillers while you have a needle in your foot its improtant to think about yourself and about that root you are the master of your brain and thoughts and not your " inner demons". You should pull out that needle first and use substances to boost positive thoughts occasionally if you are stable enough [but I recommend only natural stuff like weed because artifical shit is usally too strong ]. I mean thats what "professionals" tell you anyway (before giving you artificial substances to make you addictet so he can make more money on you). I think as a first step one should avoid watching/playing/reading too much negative stuff without some nice stuff as balance (every time I watch something horrific on youtube I try to load a "try not to laugh video" or catvideo to mix up my mind a bit its a silly example maybe you can think of something mor elaborate ^^) but I usally avoid horrific stuff anyways there is no need to carrry the worlds heavy load on your shoulder. Nowdays all our media is full of negative stuff [horror games, horror movies, horror news is what sells best besides weird artificial sex] no wonder your mind gets flooded with it your output is your input+ your character. Talking with someone about your negative stuff usally helps a lot because by speaking it out sometimes things will loose its power (or you realize how silly it is ) though it is important to not to talk to weird people supporting negaive stuff or trying to manipulate you into doing it more. You can do your best to get rid of the roots of negative thoughts by just letting some things go which you can't change (like loosing beloved ones you can get into a negative thought spiral because its an "unsolvable" problem). And you should shit on th eopinion of othe rpeople [to a certain degree of course] and don'T take yourself too seriously it always helps. Actually every living thing including you is the universe observing itself from inside we should make the best of our limited time and try to enjoy the ride with each other. Edit: I forgot to mention that a workout helps you a lot too to get rid of negative things depending on yourfitness you can start from daily 5 minutes to more (though you shoudln't overdo it I don't agree with that perfectionsim in sports and I think Lex is overdoing it a bit too but if he is happy with it & his body can take it without longterm wearout its OK I think ]. And good natural food is imortant too for the mind like fruits instead of sweets is a great idea.Ok that should be most of the advice I can give you I was there where you were but you can get out of it because its all in your head and you can change it with some pracitce and time. One last and important advice do not compare yourself with others just with yourself and always try tog et better as your past slef day by day. Everyone has different background stories you simply can't compare one human to another [not even twins live the same life] and other peole in social media always look beautiful and happy its artificial and not true.
Shane, the very fact that You are depressive is an almost guaranteed indication of Your amazing mental capacity. Both Lex and Vitalik Buterin of Etherium fame (I just listened to that Podcast before this one) are most likely the same type psychologically as You are. People who are not that concerned with day-to-day but wonder much more about the meaning of it all. I wish I could point You to the source of my insights - but it is all in Russian. The very basic ideas : this type of person was a night watchman of the tribe when humans were still in caves - so they developed certain habits and needs: they want quiet because their ears are extremely sensitive as their job was to listen to the night noises. So if they were yelled at as children or surrounded by noisy environments - it was extremely damaging to them. These people are night owls - so being forces into early rising ( for school or work ) is also very tough on them. They were all alone watching the night sky and stars : from this the keen interest in the meaning of it all and our place in the universe; also not really being a social butterfly. Today many are on the autistic spectrum. (continued)
These are the future humans who are being raised by yesterday's parents/teachers who mostly have no understanding of what such children are and what they need. Hence the oh-so-convenient autistic spectrum. That was the bad news. Now - the good news. Without exception these are the brightest human beings we have and, when allowed to develop properly, they are the geniuses of tomorrow. Not saying I know anything about Your circumstances - but the very best thing You can do for Yourself is accept that Your personality is not exactly of this time and place and it is not at all any of Your "fault". Accept and love who you are - just as You are. And try Your best to find something creative to occupy Your mind - the more You utilize Your talents - the better You will feel. Does not matter if it is "productive" or "realistic" or approved of by anyone. You do You. Because it is Your life and Your mind and it is beautiful: capable of abstract thinking few others possess. Use it for the good of humanity and for Your own personal satisfaction. To me the meaning of life is to live life and see what adventures You can have and enjoy and learn from given all the talents and capacities gifted to You. Nobody's approval required. Sorry if my comments are not welcome - I am just so worried about all the wonderful bright boys and young men who are being mutilated by the current societal norms. And I am tired to watch so many of them giving up. Hugs.
Lex, you are my new favorite mentor. I'm 53 and find your approach to be brilliant. I plan to copy your ideas about focus, diet, time management, gratitude, and more. Thank you for sharing your own ideas and the idea of others you host. This was a brilliant video. My eternal gratitude! Mark
Your routine really wowed me. It amazes me how much discipline you attack each day with. Thank you for sharing this, it is very informative and inspiring to see how someone you look up to goes about their day. Your level of preparation and professionalism for each day is truly incredible. Keep up the great work Lex!!
I used to function like this. Completely consumed by productivity and optimised everything.... got sick eventually. I was doing everything right but not every body can handle this. And I think you have to see deep meaning in it too... You can't be doing it just for the sake of doing it.
Андрей Бахарковскй it depends on your temperament. If your hyper-conscientious, you will love this type of structured and optimized day. But if you’re not, and most people aren’t, you will want a bit of flexibility and randomness throughout your day.
Lex really cracked the cheat code to living life in its truest essence - with immense gratitude and hard work. A powerful reminder of experiencing the present with full intention and purpose.

I still have to wonder if a woman exists who could keep up with the routine and schedule. Two hours of girlfriend time seems pretty minimal and squeezed in after everything else. But hopefully he finds her and they commit to raising brilliant, amazing little Lexes!
Amen. For me a man with a lot of time is a turn off. I respect someone who is always busy just like me and we meet when we meet. Lovey Dovey men are a huge turn off.
as someone who was married for 10 years and then became single again, I can say that being in a close and traditional relationship is a tremendous time suck that only indulges on pleasure and joy of living. this is something you do after you have achieved your goals and are ready to raise children. I did it in an opposite manner, where my family was a priority over my career, and I had to sacrifice timeless opportunities to make sure my children could become competent adults. My children are all grown up now, and I am now just starting to realize what I have missed for so many years, the freedom to develop my mind, my character and to actually make real progress in accomplishing my goals.
@@zalmoxiscat3217 Many women want to be adored and coddled upon, it is just this recent generation of women that spend their lives consuming social media, constantly masturbating and only using men for pleasure. It is a real dysfunction in my opinion.
@@ShaunPrince How can you say that making your family a priority and making sure your children would become competent adults is a time suck? Seriously?! I hope your parents didn't feel that way about you. Sounds like you just had a bad experience in your marriage. Balancing work/career and family is a challenge but most people usually do both.
Lex, if you see this: Thank you for this video, its really motivating. I, like many others, look up to you. You're so humble, you're a really awesome person. I want to be a lot more like you.
I love so many things about you Lex so please take my comments as positive. This video strikes me very strongly in the single sense that you’re life is missing the most important component. Others. Everything you do, every minute of your day is spent on you. No matter how fast your run, no matter how many break throughs at work, your work, books you read, hours of mediation you sit through, you will never be fulfilled. I dedicate my time, my energy, my life to others, and so do most people. My wife, my children, my friends and family. I volunteer 4-6 days a week, animal shelters, church (I’m not really a religious person but churches do a lot of helping), teaching dance at a senior living facility, Etc. Nothing compares to giving your time to others. So my wish is for such an extraordinary person as yourself find ways you can give, and make your day about something, and some one, other than yourself.
Lex thank you for the incredible openness here. I feel honored you’d share the most intimate key to your success - how you order your time is largely who you are. You sir are a badass
You are truly inspiring and you have a profound impact on some of us already. 💗☀️ I love your discipline and morality. Plus, you have a beautiful soul.
Lex is the type of guy I really enjoy listening till the end no matter what he says, its just his manner of talking and storytelling is incredible. Moreover, I think Lex is the only guy on RUclips I feel impolite to just simply close his video
Watching this seriously makes me feel like making big changes in my life. Sure, I could beat myself up and compare where I am today to where he was in his life at this point. I'm going to go a positive route though and make being better at managing time, and doing more to work on myself. Anyone reading this you are amazing no matter where you are at this point on your journey. Never let fear, or the sensation of being overwhelmed keep you from your goals.
Compare your self to who were yesterday, then aim for the stars, and others will help guide you. They aren't there to judge your current success, but to help you reflect on where it is you are headed.
I'm also a minimalist and this outline has really inspired me to time block my own days to improve my productivity and focus. I firmly believe in experiencing regular periods of purposeful discomfort, exposing yourself to that helps with gratitude and to keep humble, exercising self-discipline. Lots of good vibes in this, love it.
Your dedication to yourself, your passions and the appreciation you show for the gift of life and all it has to offer is simply unmatched by anyone I have ever read, heard of or spoken too! Your absolutely inspirational Lex. Words could never justify how grateful a lost soul is to you and your teachings ❤
It's great not just to hear your routine but getting your logic behind your decisions. It's not always about the choices we make but the reasoning behind it. Thanks for sharing. Respect and love can heal the world....T
I got rid of social media completely, started healing my mental health and started practicing stoicism. I am also on a low carb diet+intermittent fasting. I need to get more exercise done tho, I work 9.5hrs a day. Thank you for the motivation, you're beautiful role model for this generation. I wish more people were like you.
I'm not sure why, but this video made me feel wildly emotional. I'm inspired, jealous, appreciative, both hopeless and hopeful. My life is terrible, I have very little both internally and externally so I hope I can be more like you some day.
If you're interested in this kind of stuff I highly recommend Victor Frankl's book 'Man's Search for Meaning' - you can smash it out in an arvo, it's pretty short and utterly beautiful. Made me cry several times and one of my most inspiring things I return to often. It's about Victor's experience in Nazi concentration camps as a psychiatrist and what he thinks kept people alive compared to those who gave up and how that can be applied to every person. Lots of free PDFs online if you search with an engine other than Google ;)

---
Sleep = 6-8h/night
30 min. power nap during the day.
Lex sometimes does sprints, pulling all-nighters.
Sleep. Diet. Exercise. --- the essentials for productivity
Add passion and whatever else you need to do be happy and keep your stress levels low.
1:17 - Mantra
---
Lex has a list containing all of this:
1. Rules & constrains
2. Gratitude
3. Long-term goals
4. Short-term goals
5. Visualize the day
6. Core principles
*1. Rules & constrains*
-
A constant reminder on the current set of rules, constrains, various addictions, time-draining things.
Example: social media
-
He only checks social media when he posts content.
*2. Gratitude*
Visualize and meditate on the idea that he might die today.
Mostly just breathing in and out. Then pause. Life is amazing.
*3. Long-term goals*
Ambitions, big goals that he would like to achieve in the next 5 years.
He does this out loud.
*4. Short-term goals*
By the end of 2020 I want to do X.
These might be sometimes out of reach, but achievable.
_If I really work my butt off, then this is really possible. Let's get to work._
*5. Visualize the day*
He literally tries to visualize himself going through the day.
Think about a game of Sims you are playing and moving your characters on fast-forward.
Both the struggles and focusing on the timing and the beat of the day.
*6. Core principles*
-
Compassion.
Empathy.
Love
Character.
Integrity.
Strength. Both physical and mental.
5:22 - Deep Work Session 1
---
4 hour session of deep work.
No interruptions.
If an idea tries to derail him, he fights it and leaves it aside for later processing. Ideas will always keep coming.
Interruptions allowed: water, coffee, bathroom
Tries to limit those as much as he can. Ideal: 1
He uses an autonomous standing desk.
Sometimes he sits, sometimes he stands.
Doesn't wear a suit at home.
*SETUP*
- 3 monitors
- ergonomic keyboard from Kinesis
- Emacs editor
Drained but happy at the end of the session.
8:07 - Social media and guitar
---
Posts podcast.
Checks comments from the previous day.
The whole experience should be under 10 minutes.
20 minutes guitar and piano session.
Music in general.
Every single day.
9:53 - Exercise
---
1-2 hours of suffering AKA exercise.
Long run.
Listens to brown noise while he runs.
2-3 miles into the run ---> switches to an audiobook
Currently listening to a book called _Rise and Fall of the Third Reich_
If you do not study history, you are doomed to repeat it.
*Current exercise routine*
---
- runs a minimum of 6 miles every day
- 3-4 miles in he decides how far he wants to go
- he usually doesn't feel like running, but he does it anyway and he ends up feeling really good
This takes about 1 hour.
After that he does a session of body-weight exercises.
Now he does the David Goggings inspired Nickel And Dime Workout.
5 pull-ups & 10 push-ups every minute
Does 15-20 minutes of that.
Hard on the mind, body, but good for the soul.
He also does fasting. 14-16 hours.
Loves to exercise while fasting.
This is a personal preference. Everybody is different. Never forget that.
13:03 - Shower
---
Cold shower for the first minute.
Plays a 1-minute long song to support the grind.
During the shower he thinks about what the next step he should focus on his second deep work session.
16:48 - Deep Work Session 2
---
Another 4-hour session where he continues a particular task, focused for 4 hours straight.
Focus on being present.
If things do not seem to work. Stay in there. It will come.
Some minutes are rough, and the rest are full of bliss.
19:30 - Eating
---
He usually eats 2 times per day.
25:03 - Shallow Work Session
---
4-hour session of relaxed work.
E-mail check 3 times per day tops.
Video editing.
Website design.
Hang out with friends.
Opens terminal.
IF girlfriend THEN girlfriend time.
No girlfriend yet. Where are you BTW?
Throws in some documentaries, Netflix. He is human.
Few distractions. Few breaks.
A big fan of a random adventure.
28:21 - Reading
---
2+ hours of reading.
1 hour = scientific paper
1+ of literature (fiction/non-fiction)
Every single day he reads at least 1 paper.
He is currently reading GPT-3 related papers.
He thinks deeply while reading.
What are the deep questions to ask?
1+ of literature (fiction/non-fiction)
-
Right now he is reading the major novels of Dostoyevsky.
Does this on the desk or on the bed.
After the reading session he takes a pause and does the part of the mantra he did in the morning.
...
_END_
Thank you for reading!

Yes so true One takeaway is how humble this person is
Σωστός!
@@TheMightyMidget Good points. I may have initially misunderstood the intent of this comment.
While your comment does bring some context, i will provide my 2 cents for the ppl that may take this is an excuse to fall back on their attempts to be as productive.
1. David goggins bio
2. In a family of high performers their children may either be the same or the exact positive( twin’s studies)
Yes. This is an asset. He's practically giving insights to work and life.
I feel accomplished when I get In 2 hours of what he calls “shallow work”.
1 year update, damn I totally didn’t notice this comment blowing up. I started a business and I’m doing quite well! My work ethic is still no where near Lex’s though 😅.
Comparing is fine as long as you don't beat yourself up, but get inspired.

I've been working from home and have had more time to focus on improving myself. I really appreciate this video, Lex. You're a really driven guy and an inspiration.

Good luck buddy :)
Thank you for doing the math, towards the end of the video I was doubting there were enough hours in the day to fit all of these activities. It doesn’t leave much room for family, friends, hobbies, video games and just plain _slacking_, because, yes, that’s a thing my brain needs from time to time.
@@guymoreillon9807 Or even listening the 2.5 hour podcasts!
Also 6 hours of sleep is just not suficent... I dislike such daily routines big time because they are just not healthy -despite the fact one might think so due to the amount of training in it.
excellent breakdown and good for you. I wanna be in a discipline like this
“But if I do have that opportunity, I need to be able to step up.” I loved when you spoke those words.
Discipline, a vision, hard work and strong values. A hallmark for a great life. Lex, thank you for sharing this, it's most inspiring.

I've watched this video several times, as I have organized my life using your routine as a basic structure. @@Anti.Vegans He lied about having a massive podcast and phd in computer science as well
You just made me realize, how long a day is if I get out of my phone.
Excellent!
The more I know, the more I like.
Thanks for sharing and laying down so much great inspiration, Lex!

Thank you, I'm 73 I will be doing things differently tomorrow. If like you I feel better, Thanks again 😀👍🙏💪

Hugs.

As a woman who really likes your podcasts and appreciates all your devotion to work, exercise, eating healthy, appreciating life and people... I still have to wonder if a woman exists who could keep up with the routine and schedule. Two hours of girlfriend time seems pretty minimal and squeezed in after everything else. But hopefully he finds her and they commit to raising brilliant, amazing little Lexes!
Two hours is plenty for a busy woman. Especially when you're just getting to know one another. Then the weekends may have more time.
