He's so right about cable tv & media ruining the variety of music. Nowadays its too formulaic. I remember buying an album and getting the train home reading the cover, inside cover, label & all, even sometimes the smell of certain sleeves which sounds weird now but people of my generation will know exactly what i mean. Good times.
...when Antichrist Superstar dropped, it was the scent of the sleeve that affected me most, after my ears. There’s a lot of info on the early Numan years on ToTP; even to me, looking back on a time before my own, there was such a new wave of fascinating sound and vision from this period.
I have been fortunate to meet Gary Numan x3 times. He was so humble, and even remembered meeting before. I once dressed as a Storm Trooper while my mate dressed as Darth Vader. GN loved it and laughed his ass off. Evening posting the photo on his Twitter feed. He's such a great bloke and a brilliant song writer. His stage shows are fantastic.
Amazing that I’m only realizing at 54, how cool he is, and I liked his tunes when I was in high school! The live performances I seen are so cool! No wonder his wife was crushing on him at a young age!
Charmingly honest, unwavering punk attitude, deceptively funny ,,as driven as a juggernaut,as focused as a laser beam ,,I've seen them all,Bowie Floyd U2 etc,,but Tubeway army EdinburghaPlayhouse 1979 was still the best live concert I ever seen, the sound was just unbelievable quite simply ,Gary Numan Cool as Fk ! .love him.!.
So engaging. I must say, when I heard My Name Is Ruin and came to know it was indeed Gary, was absolutely great! Down In The Park will forever be in my head and often is
One of the best concerts I have ever seen festival hall Brisbane 1979. The sound just hit you in the chest and Gary was brilliant I was absolutely into his music the' radio stars 'supported him.
Hi fellow fans...Gary's Cars really moved me right into Post Punk which I still love today ....40+ years later. We just saw him live in Philadelphia last week and he sounded GREAT! I loved the show ...great guy too.
Very good, great interview… Gary is very honest and open, most likely due to his Asperger’s which is refreshing in the music industry. Met him a couple of times, a most nice and straightforward man ✊️😊🇬🇧
First vinyl I bought was TD Rubycon. Friends was exactly what I was looking for. Love Sci-Fi and especially music derived from a mysterious but exciting future world.
Fantastic! Living in NJ (US) all my life, I constantly heard the praising of Springsteen and Jovi...to my disgust. Maybe that's a bit too harsh, but, like Gary, I gained absolutely nothing from listening to those kinds of artists.
I love Gary's music 💕 and even though I do like some of Springsteen's songs I totally get what Gary is saying ...I'm not totally keen on the interviewer here...hmmmm
That was interesting he didn't rate Devo. I know he hung out with Mark Mothersbaugh a few years ago. Mark is a great artist and Devos reaction to Kent State is kind of poignant. Wish I knew more about behind the scenes of these artists.
I'm really surprised he does not like Devo. They are a seminal, outstanding band who influenced the likes of Bowie and the Stranglers. They were at the forefront of keyboard driven music.
lol , aspie , he counts the seconds that he feels he needs to look at people , 3 seconds is to short and to him seems being uninterested , but much longer then that seems threatning to him.
"In Cars,he'Mr.Gary Numan, presented himself as a human'like Android,in pale facial make-up,with black conspicuous mascara under his lower eyelid. . ."1-24-2022'
Gary is bored with the interviewer within the first ten seconds, because the interviewer hasn't done any background research and has no clue what he is talking about
Gary is proof that: 1. It's possible to know nothing about music and still write great songs. or 2. Pretend to know nothing about music, very convincingly
Sorry Gary , but as much as I like you and what you have done, I still dont believe your story of just finding a synth in a record studio, and just figured out how to use if in one day. You were heavy influenced by the 77 punky version of Ultravox, and knew what they were doing.
Synths back then weren't that complicated. Also, Numan already had a piano in his house, so getting a good sound out of a Moog he saw in a studio wouldn't be difficult. I have absolutely no musical training and I can't play keyboards or any other musical instrument. Despite that fact, I have now composed over 40 songs on a synth I bought just to mess about on. A synth that's basic by today's standards, but far more powerful than the Minimoog Numan stumbled across. Ultravox? He only became aware of them and early Human League AFTER he'd already made his first album.
Cool Interview but the thing is although I am a massive fan I am a bit puzzled about the Steve Strange feud thing I mean surely there had to be a door policy otherwise you would have every fucking stupid ordinary cockroach pleb in London to come and gawp( and beat up) the clubbers and I hardly think that Numan would tell his backing band that would be OK you can just turn up in jeans and a t shirt or an ordinary suit thing ( unless it was like the black gear they were wearing on the Touring Principle 79 tour ) So why do something as fucking stupid as that ? ( And I was a fan of Visage and .Steve Strange) Seems daft especially as that would have boosted the publicity of the Blitz ( I used to run a very short lived Gothic Punk affair''The Crypt'' so the publicity I know about and the door policy )
Steve Strange was not your typical gatekeeper. Of course clubs have to have some kind of door policy, but he was legendary for being the *worst*. Refusing Gary’s band illustrates exactly how arbitrary he could be. And how clueless-wtf was he thinking when he wanted someone else to extend the courtesy that he wouldn’t give? smh
@@biancachristie Well he didn't get away with it , he got hated on the club circuit because of his door policy's and also what Gary did to him when Steve tried to gatecrash Gary's party, just left Steve outside though I don't know what Steve expected after refusing Gary's band entry to the Blitz
Gary is so likeable. I love his energy, so ego-free.
The more I look into him the more I realise how hughley influential he was and still is.
He's autistic. He's great, but it's not a virtue.
He's so right about cable tv & media ruining the variety of music. Nowadays its too formulaic. Instablaster...
Agreed for me it was the album King of the new frontiers, Adam and the Ants. Cost £3.49 at the time.
Gorgeous gary love him so much now he is older

Stormtrooper in Drag?
Seen him live last year. Outstanding. One of the best live acts I’ve ever seen. 62 and bursting with energy.
He's so humble...
Unpretentious. His creative process in his mind is unremarkable, but he doesn't seem to realise that this is why it's amazing :)
Amazing that I’m only realizing at 54, how cool he is, and I liked his tunes when I was in high school! The live performances I seen are so cool! No wonder his wife was crushing on him at a young age!
Been down the rabbit hole today on Gary and interviews, what a lovely honest man is seems to be
Gary Numan is someone I'd love to have a conversation with. :)
The fact that he's a fellow Aspie is really cool to me, too.
Gary you sparkle the most when you are you 💖🌹

Love him so much
Legend
Loved that era/ music/ his look. Life seemed more fun back then. His music was brilliant. Still sounds great
Such an amazing guy, so humble and self deprecating. Inspirational to listen to, both in the interview environment or musically.
So engaging. I must say, when I heard My Name Is Ruin and came to know it was indeed Gary, was absolutely great! Down In The Park will forever be in my head and often is

What an awesome interview, I love it !!!
(much thank you to the original uploader) :)
Love this gorgeous man and the interview

Very interesting man. Seems a nice guy, too.
Totally love this guy!
TRUE PERFORMER ON STAGE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HIM TOMORROW AT REBELLION 22
Even tho it was being played when i was 8=9 , it is so memerable, got staying power of sound, and what a voice, absolutely unique, top stuff.
First vinyl I bought was TD Rubycon. Friends was exactly what I was looking for. Love Sci-Fi and especially music derived from a mysterious but exciting future world.
I love Gary's stance on this-this Punk was really wide
Thanks for the description info.. 🙂
He's so honest and non pretentious.
Love Gary Numan. 💕
Humble, nice, interesting guy
And I always loved the Utravox thing
VERY HUMBLE
I *love* that he calls Steve Strange a “tit.” Somebody needed to call him out
Fantastic! Living in NJ (US) all my life, I constantly heard the praising of Springsteen and Jovi...to my disgust. Maybe that's a bit too harsh, but, like Gary, I gained absolutely nothing from listening to those kinds of artists.

The human league were a huge influence on him. Phil oakeys look (make up etc) and the human leagues album travelogue.
the plan is an awesome album
I'm just looking into his discography, its huge! I checked out the plan, so far so good
That was interesting he didn't rate Devo. I know he hung out with Mark Mothersbaugh a few years ago. Mark is a great artist and Devos reaction to Kent State is kind of poignant. Wish I knew more about behind the scenes of these artists.
Dont think GARY likes the aty rock
Wow, Devo for me is one of the best from that era
I'm really surprised he does not like Devo. They are a seminal, outstanding band who influenced the likes of Bowie and the Stranglers. They were at the forefront of keyboard driven music.
16:47 Yeah but Gary makes it look cool
gary is an interesting person.
it's strange to compare his lyrics to his conversational speech. it's like he's 2 different people.
Cars is the best Gary Numan song ever!!!
Hmm are friends electric and m.e. are my favourites
punk never died
Uh huh
have you seen steve jones
punk had many styles ian dury and the blockheads example punk dont have to be fast
Sound bloke
Notice that Gary stares at his interviewer for more than 5 seconds at times. Hmmmm.....
lol , aspie , he counts the seconds that he feels he needs to look at people , 3 seconds is to short and to him seems being uninterested , but much longer then that seems threatning to him.
Good old Gary numan went to all is old concert's an had ever outfits an hair colours he had 😂😂😂

talks sense and sometimes does not

Same questions, same answers i Guess
