    The more I learned about Rob, the more impressed I became with this video, as he's one of the best sidesword people around, so the fact that the Backsworder here got so many hits is a great attestment to both the fencer, and how great Silver's system is (which many criticise for being "too simplistic". I once had a friend who does German Longsword say to me that he thinks Silver's system is "Only for Levies" but not 'real' swordsmen, as he's religiously attached to the typical binds and winds of his system and states being the "only true way" of fencing, as he so often quoted from the masters of German LS texts as the "offical be all, end all" authority on swordsmenship).

      Well, Rutherfoord has demonstrated for years he’s more concerned with respecting the essence of the system he represents in a particular bout (Meyer, Bolognese, Fabris…) than gaining points. Something very few humans can do: restrain from the impulse to win or show the superiority of the school one represents. I firmly believe Rob could have beaten the shit out of his opponent if released from that responsibility…

    Duello is probably the best looking HEMA school in the world. The huge pillars and polished floors make me feel like I’m in a 16th century fencing salle

    oh god oh god i can't stop smiling! two of my favourite fencers in a bout!
    my first reaction was "WHAAAT??? ROB RUTHERFOORD?? that's like pitting Viggiani against Silver lol"
    now imagine both viggiani arguing his schermo against silVer's defence. then suddenly Fiore join the talk and say "come, both of you, with this posture i'm unbeatable"

    I think this is close to the experience Silver was having with the Italian stylists in his day. It reminds me a lot of how he describes things in the Paradoxes - the Italians taking up a posture but not necessarily being adaptive to it at the speed of the Englishmen, who with their "hilted" swords could attack with more confidence. The Bolognese style is not the same as the later 16th Century style of Saviolo but it is not wholly different either. Very interesting fight!

    Where would you recommend one begin to study Silver's technique? Books? Videos? I am also interested in the Bolognese method. I studied longsword for a time but I am interested in trying something new.

      I only just saw this sorry, my video is available from my selz site - just enter my name and selz and it'll come up. My book is out of print and selling on Amazon for ludicrous amounts, but I still have a box that I'm selling for the original list price.

      Hi, I found the site, but your book does not appear. I expect shipping might be fairly expensive. How much it would it cost total to buy one and ship it tho New Hampshire USA?

      I only have electronic media on the selz site. I'm selling English Swordsmanship for the original list price of $49.95, plus postage, which unfortunately is expensive as I don't have the purchasing power to get a bulk deal like Amazon. The last time I sent one to the US it cost just over $45 in postage. Those are in Australian dollars which are worth less than US. Contact me through the Stoccata web page www.stoccata.org and let's talk privately about a purchase.

    Huh. Seems a bit different from Silver's advice in Brief Instructions about using primarily variable against the long rapier, keeping your space narrow, etc. How long was the rapier blade here?

    • @stevethegeckotv
      @stevethegeckotv 7 лет назад +5

      Benjamin Abbott it's a sidesword, so 35-37"

    • @Stoccata
      @Stoccata  7 лет назад +5

      Yes it was a sidesword, not a rapier. Our swords were more or less the same length.
