This episode reflects the sad reality that parents can’t accept the fact that their kids are growing up and going through their own problems. When the mom said “We miss her,” it sounded like an excuse. Really.

“No- our parents don’t know... They don’t question it either. They send us here because we’re ‘acting out’… I think they send us because they’re scared. They see us changing & growing up: we stopped hugging/talking to/listening to them-“
That sounds like one of those messed up “troubled teen” “tough love” “reform programs” (aka abusive torture camps) …

this related to me so much due to the fact that i think that is exactly how i think my parents saw me as a kid and for sure as a teenager. and the scary thing is yes if a place like this existed when i was a kid i do think my parents would have sent me here and not question how i became like that.

honestly i just watched this episode and i personally feel like while those ideas are there and i actually liked them the problem i have is i felt like the ideas were just not able to be fully explored. however on a personal note if a place like this was real and existed when i was a kid i actually think my parents would have sent me here because yeah my parents were scared they were scared when i was no longer a well a baby anymore and they were scared and even annoyed i was not turning out the way they wanted and infact were scared constantly that i would become an extremely troubled kid.

    LONG BUT RELEVANT POST AHEAD!
I thought this episode, “Leave Them Kids Alone,” was honestly crap. It was also a disgrace to the magnificent song its title is a nod to, Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”
How lousy is this episode? Let me count the ways.
First up, the main character Veronica was about as likable as a diseased cockroach. I’ve never been fond of “Activist”- type characters in movies and TV shows; Rather than “Brave” or “Inspiring,” they usually come across as just obnoxious, self- righteous, arrogant pains in the butt with no respect for anyone who disagrees with them on any subject (Not exactly good role models for the kids who are this show’s primary audience), and Veronica is among the worst of them I’ve ever seen. She acts like it’s such a horrible injustice that she was suspended from school when she jumped on a cafeteria table and yelled at her classmates for eating meat, and after apparently having several other disciplinary problems before that. I kept waiting for her to petulantly call her parents “Fascists.” Her supposed devotion to the environment seems rather hypocritical, too. For instance, when called out by Miss Genevieve for chewing gum, she responds by sticking it on a light pole rather than in a proper trash receptacle; not exactly the most environmentally- friendly thing to do (Not to mention unhygienic and just plain gross). Her actress McKenna Grace isn’t exactly going to be winning any acting awards for her performance either, if you get my drift (Though she thankfully redeemed herself as an actress with her work in the Ghostbusters films). By the end of the episode, I honestly found myself starting to root for Miss Genevieve to give that little brat what she deserved!
Also, this may seem like a rather petty nitpick, but in the scene where they’re in a history class talking about the Salem Witch Trials, literally everything said (Both what the history teacher said, and what Veronica interjected to supposedly “Bring some truth” to the lesson) was VERY historically inaccurate. The teenage girls involved in the Salem Witch Trials weren’t the defendants, they were the main ACCUSERS! Their lies got innocent people imprisoned and hanged. I speak both as someone who has a B.A. in History with an unofficial focus on American colonial history, and as someone who is a direct descendant of one of the defendants in the Salem Witch Trials. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not expecting pinpoint accuracy for one short scene of a show aimed at kids, but at least SOME rudimentary knowledge of the actual subject on the writers’ part would have been nice, especially for a scene involving a school history lesson. It would be the equivalent of if a scene took place in an English lesson, and had characters saying that sentences start with lower- case letters.
There’s also no mention of why the students’ parents apparently have no clue that their daughters are suddenly mindless zombies, and never do or say anything about it. There's also no mention on how they’re able to brainwash Claire in spite of the metal plate in her head that blocks their machines.
Last but certainly not least, the episode’s “Don’t conform” message was unbearably preachy and repetitive. Kids aren’t stupid, they don’t need the messages shoved down their throats that heavily or that frequently.
Not exactly a good start to this series that I initially had high hopes for.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll need to put on some good music to get that asinine pseudo- punk “She’s a Rebel” song from the episode (You know, the one that sounds like it was recorded by a third- rate Green Day knockoff band) out of my head.
