First of all is you are talking about AK203 it is not developed indigeniously it is a Russian firearm. And secondly our Army is getting a downgraded variant of AK203. Due to cost cutting.

Just make an ak in 5.56 nato round with slightly longer barrel with aperture sights... remember the 5.56 round use in insas is a downgraded round compared to original nato 5.56 round. The 5.56 which is now fired in insas has less range and is not compatible with m4 or m16 rifles
And we are talking about super power despite that we cannot made a basic war rifle to our army. Its a tight slap on our system who is dreaming that we can compete with china
Non funding for research and development in the main reason..government should support nurturing of local talent in research, only then we can advance in these areas. If you have seen movie "kalashnikov", in Russia they were able to build those guns due to competition in different units of army to come up with a gun design better to west. We should have similar environment to incentivize such work.

I used INSAS rifles in many times when I was NCC cdt. I can say that INSAS rifles too heavy and too jams. it's used only for drill.
