OMG 😱. Believe me, I tried all my best to pronounce it before I watched this video but I had failed in every time. And I tried to pronounce it correctly on Google, I failed again 💔. But I watched this video and I pronounced it correctly. Thank you 🙏
Was coming to say the same thing! I'm 30 and have never been able to say it, I stopped trying and just started spelling it if I had to read it out loud lol. First time I've ever been able to say it 🥰
Thank you so much SpeedModification. My friend, Ian, did not know how to pronounce “Rural” and I was at a total loss trying to reach him because he just didn’t understand how to pronounce it. But then, we stumbled upon your video and he magically figured out how to pronounce “rural”!!! 😂❤🎉
Thanks for the helpful video. It worked for me! I also wanted to share that it occurred to me that basically “rural” rhymes with “earl.” I think this will help me remember and practice it.
There are rural areas of the Thumb of Michigan, as well as Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Thumb part of Michigan is farmland.
Glad it helped! To answer your question, the since the first r starts the word, it's a little different than the second, which has a vowel before it, but I don't think it's similar to a v sound. Both R sounds should be made with a tense tongue braced against the insides of the top back teeth.
Wow !! I thought i "knew" how to pronounce this word . . . but I was wrong -not too, too wrong, but not quite right- But know, I really know how to pronounce it. You are sooo GOOD at teaching American English pronunciation. Thank you so much. . . PLEASE make more videos. May 26, 2021
I, a japanese english learner had tried this word on google tester for almost one hundred times, and every my attempts were failed. but after watching your video, I finally got my first win within five attempts. you helped me so much. thank you!
Hi, the /r/ sounds in the word "rural" are particularly hard - if you have trouble with American R in general, there are different ways to approach it. I think being able to feel what your tongue is doing is key. I have a playlist of videos which may help. Here are a few highlights for you: ruclips.net/video/MwXIGUhwfNU/видео.html ruclips.net/video/PE88nQcbRjI/видео.html ruclips.net/video/t8D5D63b8No/видео.html
Hi, Cambridge Dictionary says it's /ˈrʊr·əl/ instead of /ˈrɜr·əl/. Would you say the dictionary is wrong? Also, is the word "plural" has the ER sound, too? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for your question - different dictionaries will show the "er" vowel sound with different IPA symbols. I see that they use the ɜr for "her" and "were," and they use ʊr for "tour," but the recording for "tour" is actually being said as /tuɜr/. So I think they are trying to show "rural" as sounding more like "roo-ral," which is an acceptable correct pronunciation, but a different than the way I'm modeling it in the video. The same goes for plural - I would use a straight "er" sound, but it's also pronounced with more of an /u/ or /ʊ/ vowel by some.
Wow, this is a life saver! Thank you so much for making this video :) It would never occur to me to break the word into smaller digestible chunks like that. It's actually not as difficult as it seems, although the combination of the initial R and ur right after is very tricky.
Yes, exactly - when you break it down, it's much more manageable. But "rural" is hard for anyone to say, because "rur" requires very specific tongue placement and it's awkward.
I'm Northern European, I've spoken fluent English from age 6, I've never had a problem with this word, but while in the middle of a though I understood I can't say the word rural in my head, then I tried to say it out loud, and my native tongue was getting in the way, I then realised I can't say it without a heavy Norwegian accent, even though I'm not Norwegian nor had ever had an accent in English
I have a speech impediment and I can't pronounce my "r"s correctly and they come out as "w"s, I have gotten help for it but they're still some words I can't pronounce, this is one of them
Great video!! Wish I had known this channel earlier. from Asia, this is one of the hardest to pronounce.. so been avoided using it.. been spelled it out.. people say what??
Hi, I'll be talking about a common error pattern for Filipino speakers on Monday: contrasting words starting with F and P. ruclips.net/video/TF6d_WCmpqc/видео.html
Yes, that is a difficult word! I'll add it to my list of videos to create. Until then, use the same "rer" sound from the start of "rural," then add "mere" to the beginning. "mere-rer." You can also try saying "ear, mere, mirror" to build the word from its parts.
Thank you for saying it correctly like I have since I was a child. On the news today the announcer pronounced it 'rule' and so did the lady that worked at the rural health center. Another word the younger generation can't say correctly is tour and tourist. They act like there's no u in the word. They keep saying 'tore' and 'tore ist'. Maybe if it was spelled toorist they'd say it right.
There’s a dark L in this word It seems as though you describe the light L tongue position. It threw me off a little Please know that you’re my guru Im a native Spanish speaker. Thank you for changing my life with your amazing work
Yes, I think that it's easier to get a good sounding L in words with dark L by making sure we lift the front of tongue. It's possible to do it without, but usually it doesn't sound correct. Thanks for your support!

I'm American and I always felt like I sounded like Scooby-Doo trying to say this word. I think I have it now lol.
I'm a 22 year old American and this word still trips me up
Me, too. It's just hard to say for everyone, I think.
@@SpeechModification I wonder if it's easier for folks who speak Romance languages vs Anglophones.
Don't worry, I'm 45 and still can't say it lol
Native english speaker looking this up upon discovering my new york accent makes me say this word like scooby doo.
hahahahaha....I love that. :)
Me a native English speaker, (Utahn accent) saying ruul this entire time

Could you please also do the word parallel? Thank you
Yes, good suggestion!

From a phonetic standpoint, is the r sounds in this word considered retroflex approximant?
Either that or a postalveolar approximant, depending on the speaker.
Best breakdown and explanation I have ever seen (or heard!) Thank you!!
Thanks for watching!
Interesting to hear it pronounced like this. It's actually pretty cool. Where I live everyone says "roo rill".
Wow I'm a native English speaker and feel so proud to pronounce it correctly
One of the most difficult word to pronounce! Thanks!!
Thanks so much, it really helped my pronunciation! Quick question, would the fist r be a little close to v sound or same as the second r?
Glad it helped! To answer your question, the since the first r starts the word, it's a little different than the second, which has a vowel before it, but I don't think it's similar to a v sound. Both R sounds should be made with a tense tongue braced against the insides of the top back teeth.

I apparently say "rural" 3 different ways. The correct way, rull, and rule
Have you done "Ascension" yet? You are a national treasure 🇺🇸

My native language is English and I’m here because I can’t say rural
I think it's hard to say, too, and I'm teaching it : ).
I know how to say it rerull I totally didn’t watch a video to see how to say it hehhe
im here cause of a tiktok 😭🤚🏻
This is one of the worst words in English, and I say that as a native speaker. Wanna have some real fun? Try saying 'Rural Requirements'.
Speak it the indian way
In the Indian English dialect, the main difference would be that the first vowel would be /u/, so it would sound more like "roo-rəl."
