- And this gonna be the last Devin Townsend related video. ALMOST AGAIN is an amazing song by Strapping Young Lad and a big challenge to pull it off on drums.
Gene Hoglan wrote some intense stuff which took me quiet some time to figure out how to do it.
I had to ask Dirk Verbeuren how he leanred this song and he gave me the tip to start the double bass pattern with the left foot. So you not only have to play the hi-hat and bass drum pedal at the same time but also lead with your left foot. Say bye bye to your brain! :)
In case you wonder why I upload a couple of Devin and Strapping Young Lad songs lately: I was suppose to perform with Devin Townsend on his 2020 European Summer Festival run. Covid 19 made all shows to be canceled or moved to next year. As I have learn his material already I figured I could make a couple of drum play-through videos.I hope you enjoy it!

One of the best songs ever created. Devin Townsend is a musical genius, that guy can make magic with his music.
He’s in a league with Frank Zappa, and I can’t think of anyone else who is that elite. Someone that can make dynamic music, that branches genres while simultaneously being in its own genre. An extremely rare level of talent and skill. On top of it all, Devin & Frank wrote the vast majority of their songs completely by themselves, and did the majority of their own recording and a lot of the mixing.
As a drummer, the first time I heard this song I was like "wait... How is he... What the hell is that??" so is great to see one of my favorite drummers to pull this one off and finally figure out all those weird parts. Cheers from Chile man. You're still one of my drum heroes 🤘
Gene has a video up on youtube somewhere from a while back to this song. Another drummer also transcribed and played it which is what most drummers use when covering their vids. Hogan uses his left hand though and alternates

Gene is playing this song with the double bass and hi-hat at the same time. He is using his heel for the hi-,hat. If you listen carefully you'll find out that a lot of fine details are missing. This is a great attempt.

This song has always been an enigma to me, the bell work and the hats especially. Great to see it broken down to a more digestible form.

I think Hoglan has been matched - KRIMH absolutely kills it in this version, it's not "note for note" the same as this is his own take on it. One of the "smartest" versions I've seen is by
Jon Skaery - go look it up, that for me is the way to play this, I like it even better than Hoglan's version
