These were done as a teaching and demonstration about the devastating consequences of sin and for believers to demonstrate faith. The sacrifices themselves did not provide forgiveness for sin. It was the faith that resulted in obedience that resulted in forgiveness by our Merciful G-d! Read Ezekiel and Zechariah and Isaiah and it will be seen that sacrifices will be reinstated in the millennial kingdom. This is probably primarily a teaching tool but there is likely more to it.
If mercy triumphs over judgement and every sin is forgivable apart from blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, then why doesn't Jesus Christ forgive those in Matthew 7:21-23 when He says " Depart you doers of iniquity I never knew you " ? im confused!
