  • There is a well-known Chinese saying, 落叶归根 "Low Yeh Gwi Gen," which means falling leaves return to roots. Always remember where you came from.

Thank you guys for making my day. I just watched this and was thinking about life and all the problems we have as humans. The pain and suffering we go through the unfairness. The hatred people have. All the bad things. And then I see this made me forget about the bad and see the good side of people. How loving and hospitable we can be, how great people are, how beautiful are spirits are. I watch the news to keep me updated so I can bicker with family and friends about how this world is going crazy. I forget how lucky we are to be alive.
Thank you Stephanie and the crew at Hawaii news for bringing peace to my mind today.😊

More people in Hawai’i need to do this, learn about their culture and ancestry, connect to it, because too many people latch onto the Hawaiian culture here, but it’s not your culture or ancestry to latch onto.

My ancestors came to the United States, specifically Los Angeles in the late 1800s. The American family stayed in contact with the Chinese family by letter up to and including WWII but during the war they stopped hearing from the Chinese family. Sometime during the war they lost total contact and we suspect the family in China were killed by the Japanese during the war which would be the reason we lost total contact with them. We don't believe we have any relations in China anymore at all. The communist destroyed all records as she stated in the video but even with records we don't think we would find any records of family after the war because we believe everyone was killed by the Japanese. My ancestors came from Southern China. My ancestors came from Hoiping, also known as Kaiping. This is in the Canton area or Guangdong. No one in the family speaks Chinese because we are too far removed from China in terms of distance and time. Since we have been rooted in America since the late 1800s I don't feel Chinese at all and the immigrants from China are so foreign to me and I don't feel any connection to them.

This post is in response to someone who posted a disparaging remark on the This Is Now broadcast about Stephanie's inability to speak (a) Chinese language with her own relatives.
As a fourth generation Chinese in Hawaii, Stephanie probably doesn't know any Chinese language, and I don't know how she would learn the language that her distant relatives speak, which I believe is Hakka, a language now moribund due to Chinese government policy, and not Mandarin, which of course is taught in schools everywhere, and it was due to American policies of assimilation in large part that resulted in her not being able to speak the language of her ancestors. The same goes for Native Hawaiians that can't speak the language of their ancestors.
Also, in all fairness, Stephanie is a reporter with cameras on her at all times, and she must feel extremely nervous about trying to speak a language she knows nothing about in front of her audience. Hakka and Cantonese are far more difficult languages to master than Mandarin because of the tones. And in my experience with attempting to speak Mandarin, people either didn't understand me, or if they did, they would start talking to me as if I were their neighbor, and I would have no idea what they were saying. I think she would feel extremely embarrassed if this were to happen to her on camera.
