  • In The Netherlands, coastal maintenance is essential to keep our land protected from the sea. This video shows how Rijkswaterstaat uses sand to keep the Dutch coast safely in its place.
The Dutch coast, consisting of dunes and beaches, provides our main protection from the sea. Without intervention, our coast would slowly move inland. However, to avoid this, we monitor our beaches and add sand where needed by supplementing it. This is called 'sand replenishment' (Dutch: zandsuppletie).
In a sand replenishment, we spray extra sand on the beach or on the seabed just offshore. In doing so, we ensure that there is enough sand to keep the coastline of the Netherlands in place. Special dredging ships suck up sand from the North Sea bottom, more than 10 kilometers off the coast. Then we transport the sand to the shore. This can be done in multiple ways, which include spraying or dumping the sand on the beach or seabed. In this video you learn how we do this.
