  • Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Lȧȧz Rockit. This episode kicks-off the month of October, which is "Metal Month" on the LNL channel. This month we're hitting metal bands/music that connect directly/indirectly to horror films/books/video games, and the legendary Lȧȧz Rockit fits the bill perfectly - so let's dive in!
Lȧȧz Rockit are an essential Bay Area thrash metal band that formed in 1981 in San Francisco. Their early years featured plenty of gigs with legendary metal legends such as Metallica and Exodus, and they pumped out six studio albums in the career. While these guys may not be as famous as some of their contemporaries, let me assure you that Lȧȧz Rockit deserves another look/listen, as their albums are filled with great music, killer guitar riffs, cool licks, plenty of solos, and much more!
The chord-based and rhythm guitar parts shared in this episode were pulled from four Lȧȧz Rockit studio albums, along with a song from the soundtrack to 'Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.' This includes sections from songs such as Dead Man's Eyes, Last Breath, I've Got Time, Most Dangerous Game, Shadow Company, and the legendary horror-anthem - Leatherface.
Needless to say, if you're a Lȧȧz Rockit fan, a fan of early 1980s Bay Area thrash metal, a fan of Metal Month on my channel, a player looking for some slick chord moves to stick in their bag of tricks, or a horror fan - this lesson is totally for you! Hey gang! If you'd like to hear both guitarists in Lȧȧz Rockit strut their stuff (Aaron Jellum & Phil Kettner), be sure to check out the track 'Mad Axe Attack' from the album Know Your Enemy. It's over two minutes of 1980s-style shred, and it sounds like a bunch of Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads licks crammed into every nook-and-cranny.
I hadn't heard that track in a long time and while it made me laugh to hear the licks they were totally ripping off in their solo, it also made me feel good, because both of these guys are HUGE fans of Randy and Eddie, and you can hear it all over the place in their music.
Cool stuff and \m/ MOSH ON \m/

That's where thrash metal came from. That and so much more. I remember Rick Hunolt's (from Exodus) favorite guitarist was Jimi Hendrix. He'd be the first to admit he couldn't play like that, but the influence is there in his solos. And he always talked about him. I miss those days. You couldn't walk out your front door without tripping over a guitarist. Sometimes literally. lols

I would also be remiss if I didn't mention the massive Satriani influence in early thrash metal. I didn't know about him until the same year Surfing came out. But I knew maybe 7 or 8 of his students, and back then we all learned from each other hanging out & jamming in garages and old warehouses. His influence was everywhere, including local prog and rock fusion bands.

They were a pair of really interesting players. Phil in particular had a really cool approach to scales and melody. Absolutely excellent band.

When I was in 8'th grade a friend made me a cassette copy of the album that had Fire In The Hole, and Holiday In Cambodia Dead Kennedy's cover which I didn't know was a cover til years later. I heard the singer talking live with Nikki Black on The Bone a Bay area radio station in maybe 2008. He became an actor living in Hollywood

Wow, I've not thought about Laaz Rocket in years.
I picked up my first album in 1987 and got hooked on them until bands like Megadeth, Metallica just came in and dominated that scene.
