Re: them being the same age as the boy band guys in the late 90s: in the BTS for this one, Layne and Geoff said that in 1999 they were desperately trying to be a boy band and they find it funny that now in the mid 2020s they’ve finally made it 😄
And further info: Geoff and Layne and Eli were around 19 in 1999, and Cesar “wasn’t born yet” (that’s an exaggeration but it’s their running joke because he is the youngest)
I absolutely loved watching your face as the song progressed. I played it back a second time just to watch your expressions and enjoyed it as much as I did watching them. I am surprised you didn’t comment on the line of being in sync and the 123. Those are such boy band references. I found a Warframe fandom page that talks about why they look the way they do and the significance of the pizza and the band in the game. This is a flashback that explains some of the backstory to the game from what I can tell. The CD that Cesar has the look of the game’s version of the song on Spotify. They dressed pretty closely to the way the characters are portrayed on that page and there’s a description of each of the characters. Layne is portraying Hard Drive, the jock of the group who is strong but sensitive (but J may not agree🥕). Geoff is portraying Zeke who is both selfless and stylish. Appropriately, the character that Cesar is portraying is Drillbit and is considered the heart of the group. Eli is Packet, the best tech whiz. Omar, as guest, got the plum assignment: DJ ROM the maestro and musical genius. (so appropriate since his band is called Epic Party Band!) In the trailer/promo, you can see Tony directing the choreography for them. He’s always had those moves. I keep hoping that one of these days he’ll consent to rejoin them as a guest artist. One of my favorite game related pieces, just because it’s funny, is their cover of We’re Alive from a game called Portal. It’s an oldie but a goodie. I don’t play video games but I think I would’ve enjoyed that one just because it seems like it actually had a storyline. There are a lot of very stereotypical gamer behaviors and the Geoff clone is hilarious in it.
I'm not sure if anyone's done this, but I'll give some of the lore on On-Lyne (and by extension this song). Spoilers ahead (for those who care) On-Lyne is composed of Harddrive (Layne's character in this video), the strong, sensitive jock, Zeke (Geoff), the selfless guy with a big heart, Drillbit (Cesar), the heart of the band, Packet (Eli), the youngest of the band members and the tech wiz, and last but not least DJ Rom (Omar), the music maestro. They have 2 albums, Party of Your Lifetime and The Great Despair (which are also both songs) and were well known and respected in the music world. In 1999 the Technocyte virus or Techrot, was released onto the world and the band contracted it without knowing and began spreading the virus to everyone by touring, eventually they became mutated by the virus and were to change between their human and mutated forms (which we see for a single frame of this video) and they kept touring and this kept spreading virus, knowingly now becoming some of the antagonists in the new expansion. That is why I could gather, I don't know the lore in and out like some people, but I tried as best as I could to explain what I know, I hope it made some sense.
This is so damn catchy, great arrangement and they got the boyband vibe so well 😅👍🏻 But be warned, that gets stuck in your head like crazy 😂🙈 Thanks for your reaction to them, they deserve so much more attention 🫶🏻
Thanks for pointing out some of the other music influences (EDM, Trance). I suppose there were several reasons I wasn't into 'Boy Bands' at the time - partly because I just was too old to be the target audience. I went through my non-threatening 'boy' crush in my pre-teen age in the '70s with David Cassidy. And I think a great deal of why Boy Bands didn't have a deep bass like Geoff was that it would have been too masculine. That does not mean tenors can't be masculine, just that they were less 'threatening' to pre-teen girls. That lack of bass probably also had a great deal to do with why I wasn't interested in that music, as I tended to prefer the bass-line (instrumental) and drums. And truthfully I'm sure I was a bit of an Alt-Rock snob. But your points about those other music hints helps to explain for me, just why I find this so compelling when I disliked the genre. I knew enough to know it was the bass and beats, but not the why. I just knew this SLAPS! One comment about not watching their video all the way through. The outro did explain they were working with Warframe 1999, but most importantly it also gave a code to use for a free in-game glyph. Anyone who DOES download the update, please go find that code in VoicePlay's outro and use it. As someone who spent my working life in advertising, I'll say that using that code tells the developers that you got to them through VoicePlay and helps the developer decide working with them was a worthwhile investment (or not). So it could affect whether VP gets asked to do more things like this.
Not a gamer, but love this song. Just as much an earworm as Sleeping In The Cold Below. Obviously games are the places to find good music nowadays. Tony had his work cut out having them dancing to his choreography. Don't think I've congratulated you to passing a 1000 subscribers. Last preparations for op on next Tuesday going on. Vital not to develop a cold or anything else detrimental for procedure. So far, all well. Saving up your further reactions for rehab. Have a nice day Corey.
Layne has a recording studio attached to his house (Rayne’s Room) where he used to arrange and record EDM/dance music. You can see it listed on credits for some of VoicePlay’s earlier videos (like Chandelier) and even more recent ones like In My Room.
Geoff, Layne and Eli were in high school in the late 90s. 1997 is when Geoff, Layne, Earl and Mykal founded their group 4thelove. Singing on street corners and in front of businesses. They were 16 and 17 years old. Geoff did both bass and beatboxing. Stand By Me was one of their signature songs they sang. That's why they did it in November with Mykal.
11:35 (it might be too 80’s) Geoff was basically Judd Nelson from the breakfast club 😂😂😂 I’m not judging his or cesars looks would have been the boys teenage me would/did crush on haha
Eli said he did do two sample screams and then effects were applied/added? Each one of them are one of the characters in the On-Layne boy band. I'm sure they had a ton of fun!! ⚘️🕊
This one's interesting in that watching the video is such a different experience from just listening to the song. All the alien makeup and retro details, and the gloriously silly over-the-top strutting around and posturing is just so nostalgic and hilarious (because come on, these guys are legitimately cool in their own right and they don't need to prove it to anyone, but that classic boy band swagger just screams 'Working overtime to convince everybody we're awesome because we need to compensate for our not-quite-grown-up insecurity') but the song itself is a legitimate bop that I've been playing on repeat since it came out. When you focus on just the music, it's catchy and addictive as heck.
Thanks for this reaction/analysis to VoicePlay. I'm not a gamer but love it. It's definitely an earworm. Because it wasn't a Christmas tune, there haven't been as many reactions to it yet as is normal with new VoicePlay tunes. Eli's decade of singing lead in rock bands prior to joining VoicePlay came in handy. He did say that the scream was only partially him with processing. I do believe that VoicePlay can cover anything.
So if you haven't checked out the game yet, it is one I recommend for just about everyone. The game has, as long as you take the time to enjoy it, days to months of enjoyment with missions, side quests, main quests, and more. The game is 100% free too, and everything in the game (aside from certain cosmetics) can all be obtained for free, and the game will tell you where to go for things if you want to do the grind, or you can even trade with other players for some things. Then DE, the creators, are very involved with the community, having streams every once in a while to announce new updates, fixes they're gonna do, often have the attitude when asked "can we keep it?" As "Well, you guys really seem to like this bug, and it's not breaking anything. Yeah, we'll make a feature," and on longer streams even play with players and basically host a fashion show near the end for different Warframes. In short: It's much more than what you'd expect
My first exposure to this was the VoicePlay drop and for a minute looking at the Big Bytes Pizza ad shocked me - then it came to me it's all part of the video.
I believe Eli said that the scream was 100% effect and not a lot of volume or anything, so it sounds more extreme than it is. I haven't played Warframe and I never really got into boy bands, but I love this song!
Good reaction. Glad you understood the flashback to the boy bands of the 90’s. Love VP

This is such an ear worm, it’s been on loop in my brain for 2 weeks now.

It's a fun song, and I loved your reaction to it and then your breakdown of all the fun bits and pieces that they put into it. Great video!

I don't have to listen to this song much for them to get stuck in my head. This song is amazing and I hope that it gets more love. Great reaction.

It was their goofy imitation of young 90s dudes during the pizza "ad" that clued me in. 😄
