- This is when Pope Zera Innocentius revealed the 'truth' about the Battle of Good and Evil to Ryudo, Elena, Mareg, and Tio.

Zera: Long, long ago, the people lived happily, basking in the light of Lord Granas's love. The world was bountiful, filled with radiant beauty. But... But then, Valmar arrived, and brought the taint of Darkness to the world, staining the pure and innocent hearts of the people. The battle between light and darkness was inevitable. The battleground stretched as far as the eye could see, and the fighting continued endlessly, with neither side yielding an inch. Finally, the time had come for Lord Granas and Valmar to face each other, to settle the long, endless battle. Then...
Ryudo: How could that be? That was the end of the Battle of Good and Evil?
Zera: Yes. Lord Granas died... long, long ago. Valmar was victorious in battle.

When they showed Zera's expression for the first time as he was beaming up with Elena shouting " LOOK TO THE MOON" it actually scared me a bit..
this is by far the greatest plot twist in any rpg ever.
I think the two in Phantasy Star II are even greater still (though the second does come at the very end).
Remember how emotional I was when I first watched this as a kid. The accompanying hymn is just so good.

Thank you so much, I've been waiting to see this video for years. I remember having to skip this cut scene as a kid because my parents wanted something (damn them!), next thing I know everyone is lamenting Granas's death and I'm like wtf?!

This game kicks ass!!! And I dare say, as far as story and game play goes, still holds up anything out now! My Dreamcast died on me after 10 years so I haven't played this in awhile.

Technically, it was a draw. The only difference is, Valmar could revive after all it's body parts were reunited. Both Granas and Valmar destroyed each other's body
According to that WiseMan's Theory, Granas and Valmar weren't really Gods but two great 'scientists' who were able to transform themselves into such 'Godly' creatures.

0:45 does anyone noticed the real world map???! so, it makes me realize that maybe, the events before Grandia II took place on real world, and Grandia's actual world is how the world stayed after the war. So... Grandia II takes places on a distant future! D: OMG.
M. Aoki I'm not sure I understand what you said, but the world in Grandia II is called 'Silesia' and is merely fictional.
Yes, but as far as I know, Silesia is the main continent where the Grandia events took place. Pause the video at 0:45 and 1:46 and you will notice the mediterranean sea (Anatolian and arabic peninsula too. Also, the caspian sea, caucasus, part of Africa and central Asia) So it makes think that Granas, Valmar, and the War happened on a distant future from our era (Ex. Year 3000 or something). I know it may sound contradictory because in Elmo's narration she states that "the world was still young", but I don't know, maybe she was referring that earth and mankind were not that advanced, technologically and spiritually speaking.
It is just my opinion, maybe the real world suffered dramatical changes because of the war and Silesia is the remaining land that survived.

That's a good observation. But considering the history of Grandia II which begins at the Golden Dawn Age at the earliest, the world of Grandia II cannot be the 'same' as ours. Maybe the creators just wanted it to look like Earth. Anyway, sorry, I forgot that SIlesia is only a continent. That said, I still doubt that the Grandia II world has the same geography as Earth since the island of Arachna exists basically at the center of the world.

He didn't win! They both died but this ugly Valmar has features that makes his body parts reusable and that's too bad! It's sad for me that Granas was so good to the people and he's the one who died. And, according to an article I read about Grandia II, the Battle of Good and Evil was endless, no side can take over the other side, until when Granas had pity over the suffering people so he faced Valmar himself. For additional info, find something like "Wise Man's Theory: Grandia II" on the net.

I know this is an old comment but this assessment sounds like it could have come from Zera himself! Grandia 2's message is that perfection damns everyone. (This is why Ryudo's compassion can find good even in Valmar in the form of the wings of Valmar.) Elmo: "all were compelled to pray without ceasing" Granas was created to help everyone come together and co-operate with each other. Which started out well to begin with. But then god rested on his laurels. He became extremely vain and demanding of his people making them pray to him and treat him as a god as perfection. And he damned anyone who didn't comply. This caused a rebel faction to develop who sought freedom to shape their own thoughts and desires. A gilded cage is still a cage. So they created a chimeric god of competition to destroy Granas; perhaps the idea was that after the war they could split Valmar up and thus limit their god's power over them. But even though Valmar slew Granas; the worshippers of Granas won the war and were left to pick up the pieces of it and their religion. Granas became a mythical god of goodness based on zealous belief in the initial good times as being how it was to live under Granas. But from ignorance or pragmatism the bad aspects of Granas that lead to the war were damned into the void so that people would worship this perfect god of goodness.
Granas is like the Icarians of the original Grandia it was his mistake that lead to his death. Valmar is a god of competition gone out of control. Granas saw the imperfection of man and sought total control over them to protect them from themselves but by doing so he damned humanity to a meaningless existence. Valmar saw the imperfection of man and damned them judging their existence as meaningless and thus they must perish. Zera's belief in Granas' perfection lead him to his loss in faith of people when he came to the truth that the church had been hiding; that humanity had destroyed Granas. That is how Valmar seduced him into a faith aggrandising himself as an omnipotent god that could right all the wrongs humanity had wrought.
@@astralwyrm3787 There is no hard evidence of Granas 'forcing' people to pray to him. They felt 'compelled' to pray to him without ceasing because doing so rewarded them. And that was the danger of it because life became too easy.
Nonetheless, all good speculation.
@@Caerulean True I was extrapolating a lot based on the messaging and what little the writers gave us. I would still say that the people were not ultimately at fault. Granas had the authority and he could have made a concession to those who were unhappy. I assume there was some kind of attempt to get a concession out of Granas because otherwise the rebel faction went to extreme lengths without any basis as to whether Granas himself could be swayed. Otherwise possibly Granas himself did not get to decide whether or not the people's prayers were answered and so was himself damned by his own perfection. In that event it would be the people's fault but it's one that would have been inevitable given that humanity is flawed and if Granas was designed then the fault would have been the creator's for not foreseeing the inevitable conclusion. I guess in that case the creator had too much faith in humanity; saw them in a perfect light and didn't foresee that giving them everything they would ever want would make human existence unbearable. That works quite well too.
@@astralwyrm3787 Cyrum Kingdom was shown to have had connections to Valmar. Perhaps there was some backstory there that led them to seek power in Valmar. Or perhaps, Valmar himself held some influence. I don't know.
@McWalker25 According to Wiseman, Granas (apparently) is an unselfish person and just wanted to help everybody. Some got afraid of him and thought he was evil, so they planned to destroy him...
Caerulean But getting that power in the first place was a mistake, and too great for mortals... So he may as well have been as bad, seeing as what had happened...
Despite what that Twitch380 person has to say, you can get this on PS2, because that's what I have it on, and it runs just fine, so if you have one (or one of those early PS2 compatible PS3s), and want to play it again, you can if you get a PS2 copy.
And yes, it's still well worth playing today.

However, Good and Evil are subjective, fluid terms. In and of themselves they mean nothing... So if we're gonna judge the two we need to first describe what we mean by Good and Evil.

It's interesting that we (and every other NPC) spend most of the game under the assumption that Granas (GOD)had won, only to find out the Church has fooled every one and they actually work for Valmar(The Devil) who had actually been the victorious one.
Very WOKE game.
