I’m convinced he’ll get better… and I hope this doesn’t turn into a thing where they replace the VA every game Gamers will complain about anything in kid’s games.
everyone seems to agree he's best at luigi, I doubt nintendo can find a one size fits all va that can do all of martinet's performances and should aim to either let the characters be reinterpreted on a much larger scale or have them all voiced by different vas who specialize in specific martinet voice impressions
@@walkingonneedles I'm of the belief that the entire reason they retired Martinet is because he was asking for more money after the success of the movie. Getting multiple VAs would defeat the purpose of why they got a new person in the first place, the salary of one rookie VA is a lot smaller than one legendary established VA or multiple VAs
I wondee if he's ever going to do the pseudo-italian gibberish from the Mario & Luigi series. That was always my favourite little bit that Charles used to do.
@@iluvchess14736 During the whole announcement last year, not once did Nintendo or Martinet ever use the word "retire," almost as if it wasn't simply a choice. It's possible he wanted to quietly step down in old age, but like you said, he's mentioned many times his desire to be Mario until he died. It's all honestly come off to me like they moved him into that vague "Ambassador" role rather than him choosing to part ways by himself.
@@iluvchess14736 I wish I knew- wish we had the real Mario back really, lol. I don't think Kevin always does a horrible job, sometimes quite close! The foundation of his voice, though, it's not so solid, and anytime you hear him speak words, it shows. Dude doesn't even hold onto the accent half the time.
Charles Martinet is always the GOAT to me when he voiced Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, plus other nintendo characters that he voiced. Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, and plus other Nintendo Characters are and will not be the same without the GOAT, Charles Martinet!!
I suspect they may have been in a rush to produce the clip for the Mario Day video. A few more takes with someone directing him should easily iron out issues like that.
Exactly, why poop on his performance when they may have just not cared how much effort he was supposed to give to the voice. He's trying his best because he was rushed. Sounded like he was not even given a drink of water beforehand. Come on Nintendo.😓
I'm sure Kevin will get the hang of it as he's included in more projects. This is a big change, and no one has done Mario as long as Charles, so I'm sure after a while he'll start to sound more confident in his role as Mario.
Feel like if he slows down his voice would sound better. Try listening at .75 playback speed. Dunno how you peeps will feel about this take. But the Mario time is pretty bad. No fixing that.
That feels like it shouldn’t work but even as someone who likes the new voice I agree that it does sound better slowed. I think the current voice can feel like a caricature of the old one at times, in the sense that it tries to capture the brightness and energy of Martinet but overdoes it. Afghani is new to the role, of course, so I have total faith he’ll become more familiar with the more subtle details of Mario’s voice over time (and from there perhaps he can create a more refined/consistent voice for the character that is still uniquely his own)
The Kevin voice for Wario and Luigi isn’t bad, however he most certainly does need to do better with the Mario voice. It don’t sound like well… Mario if yk what I mean
You gotta remember, it’s his first time voicing Mario, overtime he will most likely get closer and closer to the right voice. And personally, I kinda like the voice so far.
I think Kevin needs to sit down in a room with Charles and have him run through it. Seriously how Charles not involved with this seems strange as a series ambassador.
i think for me the problem is the voice kind of slips off at the end (of the mar10 day ad i mean) like he's doing an impression but struggles to keep it up halfway through. like i have this problem that when i try and do accents if im not trying hard enough it'll just devolve into one of 2 ones im good at, it kind of feels like that to me? i cant explain it well but yeah it feels like the voice actor is slipping up halfway through and going back to his regular voice but this is the first time ive heard mario's new voice so idk
I thought Kevin did a pretty good job in Wonder. But, yeah, that Mar10 Day clip was definitely off. I feel like Luigi maybe sounded a little bit weird in Wonder but it was overall pretty fine.
Funny enough, I actually really like the “it’s a me” quote from Wonder, it sounds different in a good way. But yeah that “Mario Time” one was off in a bad way. Though I don’t think Mario’s voice should always be an impression but rather something he makes his own or grows into, while his of course still sounding like Mario. Heck, it took Charles a few games to get his voice down, I mean compare the sunshine voice to odyssey, completely different.
Charles was so iconic for the 4 plumbers and really set their voices in stone. But putting the same kind of pressure on Kevin, seems a bit unfair. Maybe the multi-billion corporation that is Nintendo, could afford to hire a voice actor for each character? Kevin’s Luigi is actually really really good, but I’m not quite convinced on his take on Mario or Wario. Just because Charles voiced all of them, doesn’t mean Kevin HAS to, if he’s not fit for the roles.
This is a challenging time for Mario, his model is changing we need to try to understand him. Those wonder voice clips are amazing, but Charles will always be my favorite ❤
Look, it is an absolute HONOR to be able to be the voice behind the biggest mascot in the world. I'm sure Kevin Afghani is ecstatic to voice the roll, and I wish him nothing but the best moving forward. But so many better options were out there, namely Jesse Pinnick, who can capture the little nuances of Martinet's voice PERFECTLY. I have a feeling Nintendo wanted a new direction for Mario's voice, and mimmicking Martinet wasn't the goal. If that's the case, then Afghani is doing a splendid job.
I still don't get why Charles was put into this "ambassador" position. I'm pretty sure he didn't choose it, they just suddenly said "you're not voicing Mario in games anymore"
Charles Martinet has said before that he never wanted to stop voicing Mario, and never seemed to have fears of not being able to do it with age. And he has yet to come forward and say that that’s the case as far as I’m aware.
No no, he clearly could not keep up with his former self, i think it's fairly obvious he hasn't got the lung power necessary to pull off Mario's ultra energetic and high pitched voice anymore. In recent videos he has been in, his Mario impression sounds so much lower and more calm. Same for Luigi, Kevin sounds almost spot-on with the classic Luigi voice you find in 2000s games, whereas Charles definitely strayed further and further from that. Luigi's voice in Luigi's Mansion 3 is so nasally compared to the Luigi's Mansion 2 clips for example. When you take into account that studio recording sessions can take 10 hours per day for up to a month, i hope you'll see that voice acting is a really demanding job. It's very nice on the part of Nintendo to allow him to continue travelling and meeting fans like he loves to do instead of just laying him off. This Mario ambassador position is a sort of retirement but more comfortable, and it's a fitting gesture for the man who brought Nintendo where they are today
My thoughts are that Kevin is doing his best on the monumental task he's been given, and he _will_ get better with experience as he grows comfortable with the role. And I wish Charles a very happy retirement.
I really like his Wario, and I think people are being too tough on his Mario voice. There is a noticeable vocal break in some of his Mario clips, but that could be from the lack of a proper vocal warm-up. He can do the voice just fine and we know that, it'll just take some time before it becomes second nature and he can just slip into the voice like Charles can (after doing it for literal decades). Charles also invented the voice, so it's perfectly suited for him, whereas Kevin is doing his best portrayal of a voice that wasn't tailor-made for him. After a while I think it'll improve a lot, people are just too critical of something most of us know nothing about (professional voice acting)
i think he just needs a little more voice direction. i think he's already doing really good. the commercial was not that great, but i think that's also part due to not being used to this new tone
Why don't they just use the old sound files from ALL the games he voiced, and then only use the new actor for when Mario has to say something he hasn't before?
Kevin’s voice isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Keep in mind, this is Kevin’s first time voicing Mario, while Charles had voiced Mario for at least 30 years. Give Kevin a few more chances, and I bet he’ll have improved. The torched has passed, and the new torch holder needs to learn the ways of the torch.
I know Mario's got an Italian accent, but I really think the voice direction needs to deviate away enough to stand out on its own in a better way, one that would make it unreasonable to compare to Charles Martinet. I think Wonder did it more than well, but clearly there was an attempt to replicate Martinet here, one that seemingly did the job but failed to capture the essence of Mario.
But he needs to get the Mario accent right I care more about the pronunciation of the letters than the voice tbh After he gets it right he can do whatever he wants with it
That pretty much sums up what I thought too, even Kevin's voice is slightly pitched down when he tries to say it compared to Charlie's normal upper register voice.
Mario is supposed to be in his mid-twenties, so what I'll say positive for Kevin is that he *sounds* like a young man and not an old man. That said, I think he just needs practice to get a closer match to Charles while still making it his own.
I like that it's "different but same" like how sonics voices change- it's different across sonics but you can tell its different but it's also still sonic- but kevin does need some time to pratice and get it right
This feels more like a direction issue, I have no idea why Nintendo wouldn’t go with another take for the Mar10 intro because Kevin does a pretty good job as Mario imo
Honestly, I think they need to take the Mickey Mouse approach to the new voice to the character. What I mean is that given the various voice actors he had over the years Mickey stays constant in his tone of voice. Also there is a line they say that…”You’re only filling in for the boss. “. So that should be taken into account for this situation.
I feel like they should've gotten different voice actors for each of the plumbers, so that the actors can play to their strengths instead of just having one new voice actor filling the role of a seasoned voice actor like Charles. Just like how Rick and Morty both got a new voice actor each instead of finding one guy to do both, and both of their voices are pretty spot-on (Rick's is better than Morty's, but it's still not as noticable). Kevin's amazing as Wario, so he should definitely stay as him. His Luigi is not bad either, but I do think they could find other VAs who could do Mario and Luigi much better, and take the pressure off of Kevin to do so many voices as perfectly as possible.
Mario direct voice just sounded like Mario going through puberty

But I think that in the next Mario game his Voice will be way better. Let's give this man time.
Reminder that he voices MARIO AND LUIGI!
The biggest Video game characters ever
He hasn’t done Wario also those voice lines you said were annoying aren’t things he say
@@Nin10dough_player829 so... How do we tell this dude that I don't like the voice lines which play when that events happen...
@@Its_a_me_mario_wahoo he doesn’t say “oh yeah Mario time” that’s not what he says so judging on the fact you don’t even know what he actually said it makes your statement seem false or just lack of knowledge on the topic
@@Nin10dough_player829 didn't you watch this video? It's even about set Voice line...
@@Its_a_me_mario_wahoo you where literally talking about the game itself when you select Mario it says “It’s a me” not “oh yeah Mario time” and when he voiced Wario it sounds very similar to Charles I didn’t notice much at all he’s great at voicing the characters sure the mar10 day presentation didn’t sound great but I bet they weren’t putting much effort into it they probably just asked him to record himself doing I don’t think he actually went into the studio
Charles should have voiced Mario Wonder before he stepped down
that way he went out with a bang
With all respect, this guy sounds like Mario with no mustache
OMG I THOUGHT THE SAME THING
I think when Kevin’s voice gets deeper as he gets older and the longer he voices Mario, his voice will sound more like Charles’. But I agree with this video in that he sounds really good as Wario, as he managed to recapture the gruff and hot tempered energy Wario is most known for that Charles began to lose starting with Get It Together.
Wow! The audio is soooo crisp you can hear the straining in kevin voice to match a sound.
Its an unfortunate reality that eventually charles will pass away and the voice will have to move to a successor. I think Nintendo wanted to get ahead on it. Get people used to a new voice.
I’ve been thinking of this too
That's so fucking despicable.
as someone who does silly voices, especially mario, i can tell that kevin is straining his voice with that line
thats probably why he sounds like hes going though puberty
I do think he’ll get better at the voice over time. You gotta remember, he’s new to the role and people have really high expectations for him. I’m convinced he’ll get better… and I hope this doesn’t turn into a thing where they replace the VA every game
Gamers will complain about anything in kid’s games.
He's not only new to the role, but he's also new to voice acting altogether, which I think is part of the problem.
everyone seems to agree he's best at luigi, I doubt nintendo can find a one size fits all va that can do all of martinet's performances and should aim to either let the characters be reinterpreted on a much larger scale or have them all voiced by different vas who specialize in specific martinet voice impressions
Honestly I think Mario's new VA will get better with time. Other than that the characters that Kevin has voiced haven't sounded too different.
Some of those "Wowie-Zowie"s sound more like a Pokemon. LOL. 😆
I wondee if he's ever going to do the pseudo-italian gibberish from the Mario & Luigi series.
That was always my favourite little bit that Charles used to do.
I honestly am curious why Charles left. With quotes like "I wanna voice Mario until I die" it seems strange that he would just suddenly leave one day
Almost like he didn't make that call, lol.
@@moodtheva what are you implying
@@iluvchess14736 During the whole announcement last year, not once did Nintendo or Martinet ever use the word "retire," almost as if it wasn't simply a choice. It's possible he wanted to quietly step down in old age, but like you said, he's mentioned many times his desire to be Mario until he died. It's all honestly come off to me like they moved him into that vague "Ambassador" role rather than him choosing to part ways by himself.
@@moodtheva yes I'm glad you agree that his retirement likely wasn't voluntary. I'm asking what caused this change
He has a Mustache, I don't expect a high pitched squeal from a guy with a large belly and a Mustache.
You don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. Miss the old voice
R.I.P. old voice.😭
Charles Martinet will forever be the true Mario. He got the voice spot on and carried it for decades.
When I heard the commercial clip, my immediate reaction was "oh god"
fun fact: to me kevin's "oh yeah mario time" sounds more like the one in 3D world
He messed up the r in Mario and the t in Time
I'm sure Kevin will get the hang of it as he's included in more projects.
Afghani is new to the role, of course, so I have total faith he’ll become more familiar with the more subtle details of Mario’s voice over time (and from there perhaps he can create a more refined/consistent voice for the character that is still uniquely his own)
Sounds like he's somewhere in-between baby mario and mario
The Kevin voice for Wario and Luigi isn’t bad, however he most certainly does need to do better with the Mario voice. It don’t sound like well… Mario if yk what I mean
I really like his Luigi and Wario, but Mario has been hit and miss. Hopefully he finds his true Mario voice soon.
6:46 Kevin Afghani has been eating his garlic
I'm just now coming across this channel, and I'm subscribing off the intro alone-that was the most magical 7 seconds I've experienced in months.
I like how there are memes on youtube that sound more like mario than kevin
That "Oh Yeah Mario Time!" is killing me. 😆💀
I seriously want Charles back 😢
2:03 auto subtitles said it the best.
"oh yeah audio time".
You gotta remember, it’s his first time voicing Mario, overtime he will most likely get closer and closer to the right voice. And personally, I kinda like the voice so far.
People hated Jason Griffith when he first started voicing Sonic, but he grew into the role and he's a pretty beloved Sonic now.
I think Kevin needs to sit down in a room with Charles and have him run through it. Seriously how Charles not involved with this seems strange as a series ambassador.
i think for me the problem is the voice kind of slips off at the end (of the mar10 day ad i mean) like he's doing an impression but struggles to keep it up halfway through. like i have this problem that when i try and do accents if im not trying hard enough it'll just devolve into one of 2 ones im good at, it kind of feels like that to me? i cant explain it well but yeah
it feels like the voice actor is slipping up halfway through and going back to his regular voice
but this is the first time ive heard mario's new voice so idk
4:10 they sound fine to me😭
I thought Kevin did a pretty good job in Wonder.
If you're going to be the new voice of one of the most popular video game characters in the world then expect pressure. Nothing unfair about it.
This is a challenging time for Mario, his model is changing we need to try to understand him. Those wonder voice clips are amazing, but Charles will always be my favorite ❤
They just fired someone for no reason only to replace him with someone who's job is to sound exactly like the guy they fired for no reason *logic 100*
No one fired anyone, the F you Talkin about???
@@fluffy_crafty2158 They fired Charles, Charles never retired nor quit.
Kevin’s Wario is fantastic and sounds like the old way martinet used to do it
Look, it is an absolute HONOR to be able to be the voice behind the biggest mascot in the world.
I just looked him up and HOLY S**T he sounds perfect! Though it also sounds like an AI cover to an extent.
Why hate on something so hard? Nintendo does amazing things. We need to start focusing on what we're thankful for.
I still don't get why Charles was put into this "ambassador" position. I'm pretty sure he didn't choose it, they just suddenly said "you're not voicing Mario in games anymore"
Not the only position he was put in, because he got F U G G E D
Simple, because he's getting old and Nintendo couldn't simply say that his retiring from the possition, not with their fan base.
It’s a promotion he went from being the voice to the face
Kevin Afghani's first time officially voicing Mario wasn't Wonder. It was in WarioWare: Move It
I really like his Wario, and I think people are being too tough on his Mario voice.
*what happens to Mario if they were drunk:* new voice
i think he just needs a little more voice direction. i think he's already doing really good. the commercial was not that great, but i think that's also part due to not being used to this new tone
Bros gonna be the roger craig smith of the mario voice actors 💀
Why don't they just use the old sound files from ALL the games he voiced, and then only use the new actor for when Mario has to say something he hasn't before?
04:07 Its mickey mouse mario
Kevin’s voice isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Keep in mind, this is Kevin’s first time voicing Mario, while Charles had voiced Mario for at least 30 years. Give Kevin a few more chances, and I bet he’ll have improved. The torched has passed, and the new torch holder needs to learn the ways of the torch.
We should at least give him time to be able to nail it, the right way
The pitch on "time" is slightly higher, like a minor key, it sounds weird, but it's also fine.
Kevin is great, Charles is great, but he deserved another take there lmao
Thank you for crediting my render! Neat video!
Charles probably had 30-40 years when he started voicing Mario.
The problem is not Kevin Afghani.
The problem is Kevin Afghani being too young.
Charles Martinet also did acting and theater work before he became the voice of mario, so he did have experience on his belt
Only explanation is mario hit puberty
Warios voice is pretty good it might just be me missing Charles tho
i think nintendo should hire me to voice mario
I know Mario's got an Italian accent, but I really think the voice direction needs to deviate away enough to stand out on its own in a better way, one that would make it unreasonable to compare to Charles Martinet. I think Wonder did it more than well, but clearly there was an attempt to replicate Martinet here, one that seemingly did the job but failed to capture the essence of Mario.
But he needs to get the Mario accent right
I care more about the pronunciation of the letters than the voice tbh
After he gets it right he can do whatever he wants with it
You’re all just talking to a rock when you say Kevin is terrible, he’s incredible
Bros voice is cracking 😂
Bros voice is cracking 😂
Bros voice is cracking 😂
Bros voice is cracking 😂
That pretty much sums up what I thought too, even Kevin's voice is slightly pitched down when he tries to say it compared to Charlie's normal upper register voice.
Bros voice is cracking 😂
SAFE LIGHT REPAIR SAFE LIGHT REPLACE
Mario is supposed to be in his mid-twenties, so what I'll say positive for Kevin is that he *sounds* like a young man and not an old man. That said, I think he just needs practice to get a closer match to Charles while still making it his own.
hes trying his best
I like that it's "different but same" like how sonics voices change- it's different across sonics but you can tell its different but it's also still sonic- but kevin does need some time to pratice and get it right
they should have actually gotten an italian person tbh
Who's gonna tell him Wallace Wells is played by a straight guy?
we are just seeing earlier into the Mario Timeline. he's going through puberty right now.
This feels more like a direction issue, I have no idea why Nintendo wouldn’t go with another take for the Mar10 intro because Kevin does a pretty good job as Mario imo
Kevin is alright, i think he needs more practice with Mario but overall it sounds promising to me. I really like his Wario voice
