She was playing with fire when she started trolling the blue hair people about pronouns in her Twitter bio. That's was a red flag there but kept playing with the fire. She had more to lose than them.
@@Arphemius the same thing happen to Chris pratt. The blue hair people attacked him for his religious beliefs. He let his co-stars Robert Downey Jr defend him. Instead of feeding the flames. Even Pedro Pascal defended Gina but she kept trolling until it upset someone at Disney.
@@Arphemius No that's bullshit, just don't use social media at all, don't even have an account. If they can't contact you or communicate with you, you are safe. There are literally plenty of actors and otehr people who avoid woke mobs this way. Gina should have been smart enough to not use social media.
The message of this video is bascially; "Instead of giving large, souless corporations staffed with people who probarly hate you and your money; how about you consume some of my art: something great or something made by somebody who appreciates your patronage?" Fair enough.
Hell most people can just dream or imagine worlds stories and characters of many shades without writing it down. While those with the ability to create will make these worlds a reality. Thus why I do like certain creators in comicsgate that put themselves out there to have people gamble on them to create works that don’t need the stagnation or corruption of the big publishers.
You're probably right it doesn't matter, but at the very least I can stop supporting them and their hate. "It is not a man's duty, as a matter of course, to the eradication of any, even the most enormous wrong; he may still properly have other concerns to engage him; but it is his duty, at least, to wash his hands of it, and, if he gives it no thought longer, not to give it practically his support." -Henry David Thoreau
Cara Dune was one of the most popular characters from the show and Cara was the number one selling toy. Disney may not be hurting for money but they sure as hell don't want to maximize profits.
Since yall wanna nitpick, I'll clarify. At one point Cara Dune was the #1 selling Star Wars action figure. That is a fact. It took them a long time to come out with official Grogu merch. Now, go bother someone else.
@@morningstarxiv342 It's not a fact just because you say it is. Show me the source for your claims. I'm not saying Cara Dune didn't sell well (and both the Black Series and TVC was amazing figures), but it's far from being number 1. That's just the way it is.
I agree that people should spend their time on other things. In my opinion, people should watch more classic films, especially films from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. Many people are aware of mainstream classic films, such as Casablanca and Gone with the Wind, but truth be told, it would take you several lifetimes to watch all of the classic films that exist.
I just watched all the Ghibli stuff in HBO Max and I’m enchanted by Miyazaki’s works in full. There is that one disappointment: Howl’s Moving Castle, but it’s good that I still watched it to see where Miyazaki lost his touch. And I finally watched Superman and Superman II, really good movies.
@@madcapmakov2 Howl's Moving Castle was much better as a book. There were elements of the movie that I liked, but the book blows the movie out of the water. So I'll give Studio Ghibli credit for introducing me to something I would likely not have stumbled across otherwise.
Yea I never for a second bought into the *Mandalorian,* I knew *Disney* would eventually stick the knife into our backs, because they’re the *BIGGEST* SJW company on the planet. *Star* *Wars* is dead to me, I still haven’t watched ROS & I never will. These corporations hope they can hold on long enough to permanently move the social/political needle to fit an ideology. They're change agents, and they know we are a populace that's addicted to media.
So imagine when the Voice of Olf Josh Gad stars in the "Book of Mormon" a play that vulgarly degrades a religion its celebrated. But when Gina makes a comparison about the treatment of a religion she is fired?..... so Disney is ok with hating on Mormons but not Jews? Huh ok?
Unfortunately, you have not been attention to greater society for decades. Mormons are not technically Christians, but close enough for this discussion. Yes, it's fine to hate them. The ethnic group in question is a protected class. They most protected class including active censorship against them. When I heard about the content of the Tweet, I knew she was doomed. That's in part because Hollywood has more that nation per capita then you might expect. Iger is a member of that nation. /shrug
@@AM-os4ty beyond what you've said, Josh Gad's offensive rhetoric was not his own, it was just his part - BoM was Trey Parker and Matt Stone's creation IIRC- who Disney would never hire anyway.
Man I loved Gina's role in Star Wars. She was one of the strongest female characters that didn't feel like she was just there because she was female. I don't think this would've happened in a Lucas led Lucasfilm.
I never had a subscription to Disney+, so I can’t unsubscribe even if I wanted to. For me, I’m mostly disappointed with the films that go by the Star Wars name that is under Disney, though I do find the standalone films to be quite enjoyable for what they are. The six films by George Lucas is what I enjoy the most, I also enjoy the various other books, comics, games and things of that nature prior to Disney getting into the picture. I think the 2003 Clone Wars microseries is better than the 2008 series as it was concise in the story it was telling and didn’t go on too long as it left you wanting more, but happy with what it gave you. I also think the 2008 Clone Wars went on a bit too long. Perhaps it should have ended with 5 seasons and wrapped up its story more efficiently. Basically, when it comes to Star Wars, I’m all set in what I like with the franchise. The newer stuff doesn’t really entice me much, though I did think the Obi-Wan series initially sounded interesting where we see what he was doing on Tatooine watching over Luke, but then as quickly as it was announced to be happening it was reported that they were going to rewrite the series and are basically going to have Darth Vader and Obi-Wan fight, despite the series taking place between III & IV and it’s implied in the interaction between the two in IV that they haven’t seen each other since III. For those who enjoy Disney Wars, more power to them, but I’ve got the Star Wars entertainment I’m fine with.
Once Lucas sold then I knew the movies (and TV) went from being actual art that took commerce into account into being complete commerce and so I looked at them in that way. It's a project by project basis. Nothing they've done is a patch on what he did. At best they've done some decent material outside of their sequels but that's it. I hope the Obi-Wan series is good but it will have to be exceptional for me to look at it as part of the actual Lucas story. That said it just might be a very entertaining sidestep.
About time someone spoke the cold truth. I agree about branching out to find new material to enjoy. Though when something gains enough popularity to grab mainstream attention the woke crowd swoops in to either bend it to their will or remove it. Competition is their worst enemy after all. They know most people can't stand their crap.
Well put. Reading the older literature like Howard and Lovecraft not following modern western comics, shows and movies has been a blessing. Manga and anime fill that void. Severing the emotional tie with a franchise is not maybe easy, but it is a necessary step in some cases.
No doubt brands work. But if Toyota was bought buy people who obviously were making bad cars I would understand Toyota was no longer Toyota. No doubt there is something about brands but often an illusion
THE NBA and NFL(to a lesser degree) are hurting because people are not watching. I hope that people that cancel their Disney+ subscriptions do not turn around and see the next Marvel Movie. They need to refuse to give Disney any money.
Sure, "get woke go broke" is a cope, but while I appreciate your "whitepill" take, I'm not necessarily sure it is one. "The Mando" is whatever (first season was interesting, but I can't take "the danger of the Empire" seriously when the Remnant in the show is so pathetically useless now), and I never subscribed to Disney+ to begin with, but even if I get to walk out and enjoy better things, the "normies", my fellow brothers and sisters, will remain stuck in the metaphorical river of coom, shouting "red team" and "blue team" at each other like good NPCs, while the world falls apart around them. This isn't a whitepill because I'll potentially get to uplift my mind and soul a little, it's a blackpill because many of my people won't. As for Carano, I'm sad to see her go. I'd heard she was somewhat b a s e d and though I won't comment on the post that apparently got her fired, she seems to have been making wrongthinking posts on social media for a while now. Alas, as any influence that might have helped people start thinking, investigating facts, and questioning narratives would have been a good thing.
Get woke go broke works just fine at the everyday level. Some companies though are too big to fail - at least, for a mere ten years or so of mediocre management. Given a couple more decades of it and they will in fact go broke. The big publishing houses were unassailable until they disappeared. The big newspapers were the arbiters of reality until THEY disappeared. If you sit by the river long enough, the body of the woke will float by.
Very interesting position. Part of me doesn't want to agree. Perhaps naively I want to believe fan action can still make a difference. But when your point on Disney as it is now not caring about the money... that hit home. It explains so many actions that othewise don't make sense. Where do we go from here though???
You can't kill Disney. But you can, trivially easily, make it possible for a small or indie artist to make a living. Taking your art and entertainment consumption dollar from Disney doesn't hurt them - well, I respect Austrian economics so I'd say it really does - but giving it to someone worthy makes all the difference in the world.
The problem with fandoms is the investment by the fans. I know from experience (I was both a Star Wars and World of Warcraft fan). I finally hit my breaking point with TLJ in regards to Star Wars and BFA with World of Warcraft, with help mainly from this channel (which I appreciate immensely) I was able to see things for what they were. Once you're willing to let that investment go you can move on to other things, that's easier said than done in most cases though. There have been some videos on this channel which have opened my eyes to things I never considered, like all the points made in this particular video. Anyways, once I decided to try other things and earnestly give them a chance I found that there are so many other things out there which are so enjoyable, like all the content which SW and WoW is based on! This is only one aspect of life which this channel has helped me with and I am so glad I found it. Lots of wisdom to be found here, if you're new to the channel I suggest you go and watch all the stuff from the past few years, it definitely wont be time wasted!

I've seen people being calcelled for such a little misbehave, but this outcome was no way surprising.

If Get Woke, Go Broke was real, Netflix should have gone bankrupt years ago. Yet my parents still pay for it. Conservatives are stagnant and complacent, and most of the controversy non-normie people see in the Internet entertainment news cycle doesn't have any tangible real-world impact.
Technically, Netflix isn't turning a profit based on their debt and cash burn. Yet they're still going strong because investors actually expect be able to successfully monetize their content at some point. Disney, by contrast, has zero trouble already monetizing its content. They'll take a loooong ass while to go broke. "Get woke, go broke" seems to be true for individual products- movies, games, and so forth. But it doesn't affect the overall corporation that much since it has so many assets and property.
People should just come to terms with that they hate you and stop giving them their money. I urge you to cancel your Disney&Netflix account no matter how many others do it, buy physical media if you like something from before.
My feed exploded with "Gina Carano fired!" this morning. You were the first one I watched, because I knew you'd have an interesting take on it. 100% agree with your conclusions. I think the hard part for much of the fandom is that Star Wars is in part replacing the role of Christianity and God in their lives. It's poor substitute, but it explains the intensity of their fandom. It also explains why what sounds like a thoroughly mediocre TV show appears, they'll take it. In terms of Luke returning, I feel like I am watching a horror movie play out in real life, but nobody else is hearing the ominous music. I give it one season before they mess up post RofTJ Luke too. They are not going to get the character right. As you mention somebody who hates the fandom is going to influence it, and it's done. The pain is back but maybe even 10X worse than Old Man Luke. Everyone is so much better off finding other art to love and maybe giving that God thing a whirl, too while they are at it.
This really is the only take I've seen on this matter that is any good. Star Wars fans really sound like battered wives at this point and the constant refrain of "Dave Feloni/Jon Favreau is going to save the franchise!" sounds a lot like "He said he'll change". I think you're right on the money but sadly I think that most people are perfectly happy to continue feeding the Disney machine because recieving a subpar product is easier than branching out and putting effort into finding something new. There's comfort in familiarity, even if it is mediocre.
Telling people that it won’t move the needle might be true, but telling people to stick to their principles is a much more powerful messages. If we all did that maybe those needles would be eventually moved... after all that’s why the Mandalorian is happening as it is, because we pushed back.
The Mandalorian is not happening because you pushed back. Disney barely cares unless you're a whale customer and even it's dicey. The Mandalorian is a fluke, a small project green lit when they were focused on the sequel trilogy. It is accidentally mediocre because the corporate people were not paying all that much attention. It is now what is keeping Star Wars alive. It will not be long before this is completely messed up too. The last Disney shareholder meeting involved essentially any number of spin off Star Wars TV series like the Mandalorian. As a child of serial TV shows from the 80's and early 90's, I'm sorry to say that all will do is kill off favorite characters one by one on lower budget. Find something else to love and you will be better off for it. You may even hasten Disney's demise in the process.
Mando is happening because they want to sell you trash product because Luke Skywalker is in it for a minute, they did it with TFA. nothing to do with fans, just standard pimping of nostalgia. so they capped off a mediocre SW rip off with a fan service scene? they did it in both TFA and Rogue One. it is because they know they can make mediocre content and sell it as long as they occasionally massage the fan ego.
Clearly the youtuber(up there) never read a history book or knows of are own history. Because if he did he would know that the needle can be moved. The British were that needle during the R-War and guess what we gave them the finger and we won against them and we got a country of are own. When the US was split in two between the North and South we sided with the North because we wanted slavery to end and we won against them and slavery came to an end it is not are fault that morons from the South forgot that fact. When Japan bombed us in WW2. They awakened a sleeping giant and that giant was the full might of the US and we defeated them because we knew if we did nothing then that would prove that we were a nation of weaklings and playboys. So standing up can move mountains and when there is more then enough people then they can change the world. As for that needle it would be moved it will be destroyed. V from V For Vendetta was right about his speech about how Governments should be afraid of their people and same thing goes for corps.
This is why I didn't watch Season 2 of Mandalorian and why I don't care about Star Wars anymore. For me, it's episode 1-6 and the Expanded Universe. I started doing exactly what you said without even knowing it. Reading old books, playing old games I've never played, and rewatching the movies that I love. Wise words and great advice.
You like Elric you should collaborate with Razorfist a RUclipsr who loves Elric and the Shadow good old pulp heroes. Which he help me to fall back in love with pulp heroes like Conan the Rocketeer and the Spirit.

I always go back to last year when "cancel netflix" trended on twitter for like a week because of that "Cuties" movie. Even politicians like Ted Cruz and Tulsi Gabbard chimed their 2 cents in. Then last month i looked at Netflixs numbers and they had a huge gain in subscriptions year over year from 2019, they are at over 200 million now. Internet boycotts don't work.
Yep loyal to a vice is incredibly accurate unfortunately. Even me I am begrudgingly hopeful for a turn for the better. The woke corporation effect is understated in the destruction of these great franchises. And comics have become subpar with the woke agendas
My friends with little kids are fans of Star Wars and Star Trek for that matter but they aren't going to cancel anything. They are too busy to keep up with the drama and they have Disney+ so the little ones can watch something like Moana. At best they will just stop watching the Star Wars portion of Disneys portfolio.
Luckily, video games continue to have a massive amount of creativity in the indie sphere. And it goes unmentioned because it is not really known, but video games eclipse movie ticket sales (from 2019) by about 10:1. Edit: From the same year, 2019, TV streaming service were around $100 billion; still not matching video game industry.
I can only agree, I am a book reader for nearly 40 years now, and since I got a kindle, I got to enjoy a lot of self-publishing authors. And the number of stories out there you will need a lifetime to get through all of them. Not all of them are good, but once in a while, I find an author who writes truly imaginative stories without presenting to "stupid protagonists" to ramp up the drama or artificial character motivations or... basically everything that makes modern movies crap in my opinion (with scarce exceptions). This is particularly true for sci-fi, the only sci-fi series, indeed contemporary series, is The Expanse, based on books and contains everything you otherwise can get in books. There are many post-apocalypse series, which could help you get over Walking Dead because they are just better. Things like "Under The Graveyard Sky" by John Ringo or "The New World" by John O' Brien and many many more. Those books contain rational human beings who are trying to survive without Plot-Armor. In space-opera, we have David Weber, Jack Campbell, Walter Jon Williams, and John Ringo. For example "March Upcountry" and following books in the series by John Ringo and David Weber are great. There is an alternative history series like "Belisarius series" by David Drake and Eric Flint. Or 1632 series by Eric Flint, this one alone one can spend years to get through all the books. And if you want more star wars, there are novels there, they are a lot better then the movies if it comes to stories and characters, hell every Star Wars fan should read fanfic series by Chuck Sonnenburg aka sfdebris, called Unity. It Is raw because not edited, but has a better story for Star Wars /Star Trek characters than anything I have ever seen in movies for both franchises. Long story short, there is no reason to worry about crap coming from Hollywood, better spend your money on books for authors who put all their soul all their intellect and imagination into their works. Instead of all those hacks who do not bother to close a milewide plot hole in a simple script, just because they think you are stupid and will gobble it all up, no matter how pathetic and lazy the creators are.
I think we're on the verge of independent filmmakers overshadowing these big corporations. Soon they will be rendered irrelevant because fan made and third party content will be BETTER than the studio productions because of the fan passion and artistic merit and more accessible production tools. There will of course be a lot of trash in there and corporate accessibility will always be easier to the normies but fanbases will develop for other content. I'm developing my own franchise using Unreal's Metahuman technology that will look competitive with any main stream film studio. We don't need the Disneys and Foxes and Warner Brothers of the world anymore for quality storytelling.
Awesome - I actually predicted that game engine technology would provide the future of affordable effects and assets a few years back, so it's good to see some people putting that to use! And almost 100% of the time a bad movie is bad because of its writing, which is the LEAST expensive part of the production.
I think this is a good point. After watching this I realized people keep saying "get woke go broke" but I don't see much of it. It would probably be better to just let star wars die alone and find new hobbies. Lovecraft could do with more fans (especially with everyone bitching about him) and Howard's works deserve more atttention in the public consciousness. And it does feel pointless to hate on Star Wars at this point anymore.
100% agree. And besides, the writing for the Mandalorian has devolved to the level of a seven year old lining his action figures up and having the good guys knock down the bad guys. Disney has the formula down now. Jangling the Luke Skywalker character in front of their audience is just icing on the cake. The fanboys loyalty is now secure.
And I believe there are still great stories to be told. The ratio of writers in the world vs published authors is quite vast. They probably can’t get published because their product is quote on quote not “marketable”.
While I don’t completely agree with Dave suggestion that ‘get woke, go broke’, isn’t a thing (particularly with the pandemic), I totally support the idea that we don’t get so caught up in the wokeness of what we are being fed and re/discover the wealth of inspiring material out there.
@@FlameBringer84 it doesn’t matter if it’s unwanted -they will shove it down the throats of the populace, they have the cultural capital and resources to do so. Have to break out of the framework of liberalism and capitalism to truly fight against cultural marxists.
I've yet to see the "Go Broke" part be a pattern. Captain Marvel - meh movie that it was -, The Disney Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Wonder Woman, Black Panther... All made A TON of money.
I stopped being a Star Wars fan once I realized they hate me. So I took your advice before you even gave it! I stopped giving money to Disney and I’ve pivoted to novels like yours, David. Cheers!
they'll care. the reason this is different is disney plus is the only thing keeping them afloat and mandalorian the only thing keeping star wars afloat. each subsequent star wars movie has done less and less with han solo being a complete failure. disney plus mandalorian is really the only thing keeping that site afloat being galaxy's edge actually cost disney enough money they let go of staff and are rebuilding it into something else. no, disney isn't the power house it once was, in part due to giving allegiances to china who spread the virus that killed their parks. it'll matter. one bit doesn't. but several over time? yeah... it matters. they can't even shell out original properties anymore and it's starting to hurt them. i imagine we will be here when disney actually falls and it'll be glorious. now if we can only watch the liberal government fall in the same manner...
One of the current best Star Wars things is the Movie Battles 2 mod for Jedi Academy that's been around for years. I also somehow enjoy playing and modding the new EAfront 2, but it was given away for free on epic, I bought it after support ended while on sale after having played free trials and enjoying. Wouldn't recommend people buy it. I generally just avoid buying any Star Wars things other than the rare Lego set these days, and I was one of those people that never bothered to go pay to see Rise of Skywalker after my family had a pretty vapid experience seeing the Last Jedi. My sister eventually scrolled past it on TV and just WTFed at the "Rey Skywalker" bit, which was entertaining to witness her reaction to :P
Well Disney might have a big wealth of IPs but they're not gonna pay their employees out of that, they need money after all, and with the pandemic shutting down most theaters, and most of Disney theme parks, they already had to lay-off a lot of staff with more lay-offs to come, so this is why the majority of Star Wars content is now out of hands of Kenedy, they spent 4 billion dollars on this IP and they haven't made it back yet in a long run, and they realized the only way to do so it thought content that respects fans and the IPs legacy
I... Agree completely... The only way to win is not to play... I am now glad I have my cousins Disney+ account (who is a complete normie, so she will never know about this) so I can watch most of the back catalog I missed as a child... Been looking for all new old stuff that I can't get enough of and it is great, from classics in Conan to exiled stuff like the Star Wars Legends books and stories, plus enjoying Cobra Kai like nobodies business. I am having the time of my life, while I see people on the other side completly distraught by all of this... I can't hold my need to say "I told you so!"
I basically left Star Wars fandom after I watched The Last Jedi, I did watch Solo with a friend and I finished watching Rebels (although I'm not sure if that was before or after The Last Jedi), so with the exception of the Star Wars RPG, I really don't care about Star Wars anymore (and Disney can't tell me how to run my Star Wars Campaigns). A similar thing has happened to me with Marvel, the MCU is pretty great, but after Endgame I have very little interest in continuing on with it, that could change. And since I get way more satisfaction out of creating my own worlds and writing my own stories, I figure that's what I should be focusing on rather than soulless corporate products.
"Don't give money to people who hate you" has really been my focus the past few months, and I would say it is making me a little happier, more and more so as time goes on. I'm not giving money to Amazon or Target, I'm giving it to local businesses. I'm revisiting and loving old film and old books or experiencing some for the first time. When friends want to talk about the latest whatever on Netflix I just tell them I don't watch Netflix and move the conversation somewhere else. There's some confusion at first, but they're usually happy to talk about something else.
Get woke, go broke can be a real curse, but like many things, the bigger you are the less being stupid will effect you. Like with this Disney thing with Gina, losing 2-5% of the subscribers won't sink them, but it can cause massive damage to say, Marvel before Disney bought. Heck you could say that's why they had to sell out to Disney.
There's no way they're losing even 1% of their subscribers to this. They have almost 100 million subscribers and virtually none of them know or care about this. The ones that do will resub later in large numbers, I guarantee it. And even if they lost a large percentage it doesn't matter because many of the people in charge do not care about making money as much as they care about politics. The moral vision trumps the financial one every single time. Based on past fan engagement there's maybe, MAYBE 50,000 people who.would cancel over this. That's a lot, but it's actually only 0.05%.
@@DVSPress umm, I don't disagree with you. I was just trying to say that a huge company like Disney can get away with things like this, even if the backlash was my admittedly over estimated 2-5%. My family owns a small business and if we acted like Disney, well get woke go broke would be true for us. Since we aren't rich, the politics don't trump the financial. I'm not attacking you or your views, just commenting around the margins. Be safe, be healthy, God Bless Charles
You go see her comment and is something absolutely fair, those of a libertarian and conservative view point are being persecuted on social media as well anyone who puts logic first and question flawed narratives.
So stay off of social media as best you can. I am aware that is where the in crowd goes to hang out. Does anyone need it? I have never seen anyone say "I became a better person after I join Twitter". I have seen countless sentiments that amount to "Thank God they kicked me off of Twitter".
I agree 100% with your "consumer habits" advice, but I think there's another debate (that I think also encompasses the recent election) and it is the frustration of being or becoming (more) powerless. You had a person in a place of power and to whom people had to look up. They were somewhat similar to you (at least "ideologically") and yet you see them now fallen from grace because they were similar to you. I imagine such thing can make you lose hope. Christians may have a word or two to say here ("my kingdom is not of this world", etc.), what do you say to someone with no Faith?
You got a point David I guess it's time to become the new madonas, kiss, twisted sister and sing we aren't going to take it. It will take time like it did for them but it's funny how the new establishment became that which they claim they fought for.
First good video about this subject I've seen. Most of the people making a scene about this will forget about it soon. Complete waste of energy for an actress nobody cared about until now and nobody will care about after this settles down.
There are many things about fandoms and communities in particular that make me wonder why people are in them if they hate what goes on inside. It comes down to the canon in many cases. In the mass, for example, the Canon is also referred to the rule of consecration. We are rededicating ourselves to Christ as our head and our salvation. Fandoms and fantasies are trying to capture that energy away from Christ. I’ve listened to a Priest on RUclips lament getting sucked into the LOTR fandom because Tolkien wrote some questionable things about myth and allegory. The one thing I’m glad GRRM did is to put his foot down on fanfiction written about his book series because it expresses a desire not to promote such things as some new revelation unlike what we have with Hobbiton birthday parties.
I'm so out of the loop, I saw Gina Carano and just had a vague recollection of her getting knocked out by Cyborg. xD I don't have Disney+ nor any interest in SW after The Force Awakens though.
I’ll admit that I was angry when I heard the news and am still a little angry about it. I’m under no illusions that Disney cares about my opinions at all, though. The older I get, however, the more I enjoy Star Wars when I treat it like a franchise that ended in 1985 (when the toy line was cancelled) and ignore everything that came after.
I have really enjoyed the Mandolorian, and I appreciated her character a lot in the show. IMO it's been the only decent thing to come out of Disney-era star wars so far. I saw the critiques of her and... no, I don't think people should lose their jobs over having opinions and daring to express them, even if I disagree with those opinions. Having an unpopular opinion is not actually the same thing as actively harming people! I agree with you though, Disney is gonna do what they want regardless. A few cancelled subscriptions is irrelevant to them (though I'm not going to unsubscribe since there is a lot on there me and my kids enjoy and I'll probably still watch Mando too, because I really like the show 🤷♀️)
Yeah, I think decoupling from the derelict companies and the derelict culture is the best way to go. There's a treasure trove of stuff that doesn't get nearly as much attention as a blockbuster, whether new or old; artists, and I mean real artists who create genuine poetry, literature, etc are the ones who are going to produce the quality material. Besides, these crazy people only have a leg to stand on as long as people pay them. They're not looking to get paid in cash or goods though; as long as people PAY attention to them, they've got what they wanted. So, I'm an advocate for completely ignoring Hollywood and anyone or thing that swims in the same cesspool.
David what do you think of using the public domain against Disney? Kinda like the way the GME WallStreetBets saga happened. As it is Disney is free to rape Star Wars till 2072, but not if the general public does something about it. This year Gen Y reach 40 and when a generation hits 40 they start having more sway as they reach positions of power and have accumulated substantial wealth by this time. This decade will see Gen Y start to take over from the Boomers/Gen X. I think one of the best, and even likely things we can use our power to do, as more Gen Y are elected to government (and richer Gen Y can afford to lobby) is to start attacking copyright law and lobby to have it returned to it's original lenght. 95 years is absurd and means films made in 1926 only reached public domain this year (Buster Keaton's The General is awesome BTW, and now legally free to download, but to watch it and realize this silent film is the most recent film to enter public domain is just depressing). Even if Gen Y over the course of the 2020's managed to get copyright shortened to 50 years, that would be a huge victory and free up so many classics to public domain (everything up to 1971 if it happened this year) and Disney would lose the rights to Star Wars pretty quickly and would start having to compete with literally everyone on the planet that wanted to publish their own stories, short films or indie games. God imagine the passion of the indie game community all fueled into making their dream Star Wars game. Do you want that now or in 2072 when people are about as excited for Star Wars as people are hyped for Charlie Chaplin right now. Disney is robbing Gen Y and Z of being able to participate in and add too the cultural legends that they grew up with. No other generation in history had to deal with that. And it would be so fitting for Disney to lose Star Wars since it was them who lobbied to have copyright extended in the first place so many times. Also it would seriously dent their steaming service.
PS - Gen X has never had power. The oldest Gen X is about 55. If you look at the average age of corporate types and politicians, you'll find almost none are of any generation except Boomer.
@@AM-os4ty No it's not just movies, it's art and culture, and no previous gen has been subjected to so many restrictions regarding participation in cultural storytelling. And Gen X does have a lot of power compared to Gen Y right now. Gen X are senior managers earning higher salaries, they are corporate VP's and there are Gen X congressmen, senators and mayors. Gen X don't hold the absolute peak positions, and may never get total control of power like Boomers did for so long, but they are sharing power with Boomers at this point. The problem with Gen X is they are a smaller gen surrounded by two big gens. Gen Y will be much more impactful when we take power.
@@123mandalore777 - There is nothing Gen X can do until the Boomers die off one by one. We have lived in Boomerville all of our lives and many of us know nothing else. It's not surprising that the ambitious and teacher's pet of our generation ended up as sychophants as 2nd in command. It is right to criticize Gen X for it's nilisim and passivity. That said, Boomers have thrown their collective weight around since the 1960's. They outnumbered their parents 4 to 1 back then. Boomers had their children staggered over two generations and did not replace themselves. I do not see how cultural power was taken from them, unless they gave it up. They will die as their collective last cultural act. Walking away is still anyone's best bet, regardless of generation.
There's an upgraded version of Babylon 5 on HBO Max right now. I highly recommend it to anybody who likes science fiction. The pilot is weak, but every episode is better than the last and it really takes off by the second season.
Yeah, to me The Force Awakens was a slap to the face. The amount of nostalgia couldn't deceive me. I saw it two times in theatre, once with friends, once with family and I regret it. :D I watched Rogue One from torrent, it was better but it didn't blow me away... then I stopped. I haven't seen the other movies, not even The Mandalorian. I still consider myself a Star Wars fan though. I just keep my focus on the pre-Disney era. Sometimes I watch some Fandom Menace videos because I still care about the future of the franchise, but I don't give money to Disney. I don't even have access to Disney+ in my region so... :D I purchased all "Legends" books that were published here, but sadly that's only one third off all books ever written and by the end of this year publishers won't be allowed to sell those books either... only the "new canon". It's so sad. It would have been better if Lucas never sold Star Wars to anyone. Even if his children wouldn't have carried the torch further, the franchise could have died with dignity.
But what if Disney ends up pursuing exactly what you decide to alternatively pursue and consume? That seems to be the pattern of Disney's behavior; they're like the Eye of Sauron, endlessly vigilant and seeking out notable activity happening on the land, the sea, and in the hearts of men (or hobbits).
More people need to hear this. While I don’t want to discourage those who are boycotting Disney (I certainly am), they need to understand that “Get Woke, Go Broke” doesn’t exactly work when you’re dealing with ideologues in a company the size of Disney who no longer acts in accordance with a profit motive.
I actually think they're doing me a favor. These past 5-6 years have been really sobering, and as they have made a mess of all my favorite things, I've slowly given up these time-consuming consumer hobbies. Now I put all that time, money, and energy into creating stuff and bettering myself instead. They're really giving all of us the motivation to grow up, take responsibility, and be the change we want to see in the creative space they now dominate. So maybe that's what we should do? F their terrible products and build our own. Because their behaviour, and the scale of their domination, is too much to be sustainable over time anyways, so at some point soon we'll be able to steal the culture back from under them. If we're ready for it.

Well you gave up easily to begin with so you jumped off a while back.

You can't kill Disney. But you can, trivially easily, make it possible for a small or indie artist to make a living.
Big true true. Was thinking about that at the end of 2020 and how much that phrase meant squat.
Netflix yes but Disney? So sorry.

Thanks, David!
Everybody buy his books
Always sane & sober thoughtful videos. Thank you. And one helluva a writer. Have a great day David.
They probably can’t get published because their product is quote on quote not “marketable”.
even IGN reported on this in true CNN fashion.
wonder who owns IGN
"Don't give your money to people who hate you." ~Sage Wisdom
This is SUCH an important message. Thanks for espousing this point of view!
While I don’t completely agree with Dave suggestion that ‘get woke, go broke’, isn’t a thing (particularly with the pandemic), I totally support the idea that we don’t get so caught up in the wokeness of what we are being fed and re/discover the wealth of inspiring material out there.
“Get woke go broke” is a cope.
It's like "move the needle". It's stage 3 of Grief for the death of a beloved franchise: Bargaining.
Tell that to everything that's failed financially for going woke. The only people coping are lefties who can't accept that their swill is unwanted.
@@FlameBringer84 it doesn’t matter if it’s unwanted -they will shove it down the throats of the populace, they have the cultural capital and resources to do so. Have to break out of the framework of liberalism and capitalism to truly fight against cultural marxists.
@@Ethantk12 now if you want to see some hardcore copium addiction, reread your posts. Ironic, no?
I've yet to see the "Go Broke" part be a pattern. Captain Marvel - meh movie that it was -, The Disney Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Wonder Woman, Black Panther... All made A TON of money.
It doesn't matter because Star Wars itself doesnt matter anymore.
My view of Go Woke Go Broke is that there's different types of it like Financial,Communal,&Canonical ect
They might not go broke right away but In the long term it does permanent damage
In other words, mainstream culture is a tepid cesspool, so we should create our own culture. I couldn't agree more.
Spot on! I just got "whitepilled".
The virgin fan vs The Chad Pop-Culture Connoisseur.
Im paraphrasing you but I like 'the walking away' stance you are promoting.
Many more people be sailin' the high seas, M8-E. This be yet another reason, aye.
Only saw Force Awakens. I went yep Disney screwed this up like I thought they would. Haven't watched anything Disney Star Wars since.
Thank you for the book suggestions. 👍

Breaths the fresh air. I've been doing this since Bendis fracked Superman over a Barrel and ruined his family.
Oh boy, Bendis, The master of the nine panel tracing page.
I think you mean just The Phantom Menace was groundbreaking the other two prequels didn't do anything TPM had already done up to that point.
You didn't even mention Flash Gordon!!! there wouldn't be a Star Wars if it wasn't for Flash Gordon!!!
True

Disney is just another corporation now, no different than a military contractor or an oil company. It is no longer the company
started by Walt Disney.
Anime is my last bastion of modern visual media that is worth my time.
So, I'm an advocate for completely ignoring Hollywood and anyone or thing that swims in the same cesspool.
... and nothing of value was lost.
It's just movies. I am much more worried about people not knowing how to pray and thinking that believe in God is stupid.
If only there was a way to watch movies and tv shows , but not pay for them .... Hmmmmmm
You're still giving them your attention.
ThankYou i thought i was the only person that felt this way!! thank you for this breakdown! so true
Engaging with current mainstream content is exhausting a lot of the time.
