It used to be common practice to use "cut nails", which are square or rectangular with no pointed tip, rather than round, wire nails for fixing floorboards. The square edges cut the wood fibres rather than pushing them apart, so the wood doesn't split. Dulling the end of a round nail has the same effect.

If you don’t want wood to split just hit the nail on it’s tip, it compacts the wood instead of separating it, do it all the time and works 4/5 times(plus nail placement also matters)
Nice job with counter sink bit, and only pro carpenters usually know about dulling the point to prevent splitting. I dig the weather strip stripped screw removal. Old school.
I learned that last one with the nail 30 years ago and it has saved me many times. Also running the nail behind your ear gets a little bit of oil and works for really hard kilned wood.

Actually, a tip for the nails I learned from an old framer. Use your hammer to flatten the tip of the nail. It won't split the wood. That's why finishing nails are square

I've used it on low torqued nuts that were metric and at the time I only had sae sockets. But I agree on a screw or anything with enough torque it won't work

Just cause you sqeeze the wood with pliers doesnt mean it wont split, give it time it'll still do it. Drilling a hole it the right way

Ok, rubber band and dulling the nail's tip were new to me. I'm still puzzled by the dulled tip, I'll have to try it out.
A sharp nail tip pierces between the wood fibers, separating them, which is more prone to splits. Dulled tips compress the fibers instead.
Same happen when you make a forged wheel, they used dulled template, not by sharp edge

Turn the trim nail or any nail upside down and flatten the tip with the hammer and wood will not split.
