These are some great photos!! Was thinking about picking up a 300 2.8 for my R6ii and you’re making it even harder to say no
It’s a solid lens!!
Derek, thanks so much. I have an R6 and have a 24-240mm - not the best lens. Am having trouble getting face detection to work, but will keep at it. Really appreciated your comments about your positioning on the field.
Face detection might have an issue with that lens. Thats an f4-6.3, so not sure if it would work on that being a slower lens. Might look into the canon website about compatability for face AF. Thanks for watching and glad I could help!
@@DLivingston Thanks! Will do.
Awesome shots! That's so cool that the coach let's you hang in the dugout for the game!
Right?! the coaches at Pitt are really awesome!
Lots of good tips here. Thanks for sharing. I haven’t been assigned to shoot baseball just yet but I’m sure I’ll see you out there soon!
Thanks for stopping by Seth and see you soon!
Hey Derek, I have got the same Combo (Canon R6 & Canon 300mm 2,8 nonIS.
The old nonIS version is sharper than the IS.
I take soccer, Tennis usw photos with the 300 2,8 for Newspaper and online media and I am super happy with it since longer than 10 years now!
I got the R6 recently and it works very well on it with the EF Adapter!
Keep well !
P.s.: at sports I don’t use the Face AF at all. I use the face AF when I take wildlife- also with my 300mm 2,8 or my RF 600mm f11
Timo, first off thanks for watching. Good to hear the non IS is sharper because I love this lens so far! I have loved my R6's since purchasing. Perfect for everything I do. I don't often run the Face as well but find it helpful in baseball, softball and track at least with the longer lenses. Have a good day!
Also, re servo eye/face detection for baseball, what servo case do you use? Thanks.
I use case 2. I’ve never really tried many of them tbh.
Curious how it would work with Hockey. Shooting NHL through the glass holes makes it difficult to effectively follow the super fast action at times. I have been contemplating the new R6m2 or even maybe the R7. My 1DX's are getting long in the tooth and I'd like to capitalize on the face detection capabilities for many situations like you mentioned (particularly the slide into 3rd). Thanks for the video....
Thanks for watching. I’m sure it would work great for hockey. The r6 ii would be my choice over the r7. R7 is a crop sensor and I’m not saying there isn’t a time and place for a crop sensor in sports but if you’re replacing a full frame, you’re better off sticking to full frame.
@@DLivingston thanks. More than likely it would be in addition to. I still have my old 1D Mark III and 5D3 collecting dust. I never end up selling anything which is a problem I need to get over. Lol
Derek, thanks, again. I am using face detection with R6 and the 100-500mm lens. You said you always get face detection to work, as long as you hold your shutter down. I do that, but I end up with a red or blue box in the resulting photo. Or, am I incorrectly thinking that because I see that focus box on the photo when I press the playback button, it will be on the actual photo - but it won't???
The issue might be the f/stop that the 100-500 is. All of my lenses are f2.8 or faster. I’m not sure if maybe the aperture being higher on that lens causing issues with AF. I use one spot focus a good bit for baseball. The AF selection right after face af selection.
Have you tested the difference of rolling shutter in Electronic Shutter mode vs Mechanical Shutter mode? I've just never been a fan of the bent bats and wonky ball shapes you get from the rolling shutter.
I have, typically I choose mechanical to battle that. The rolling shutter is a pain for sure.
Great vids! Any experience with the 400mm DO when shooting baseball?
Thank you for watching. I have not tried the DO model of the lens. I have looked into them but havn't tried one.
Great photos! Are you using the electronic shutter with these images? Do you experiencing much warping of the bats when they're swinging?
Hey, thank you. I use it from time to time. Tomorrow my video will be about the warping and such with electronic shutter. Upload will go up around 8am central time.
@@DLivingston Wow, that's perfect timing. I get my R6 tomorrow (Monday.) I shoot for a local college in my area as well. Also shoot with a 300mm 2.8. Just left Nikon, so Canon is new to me. Subscribed.
Hey congrats on the R6! Thanks for subbing
You can see the rolling shutter in quite a few of these shots!
@@jonnomarshall Yep, which I just did a video talking about.
Superior work! I have been shooting weddings for a number of years now and I am adding sports photography to my repertoire. I have saved enough for a Canon 300 or 400mm. Which would be best for football, soccer & baseball?
I’d say the 300 is the better option. Depends on your venues though. My venues would make the 400mm too much. The 300 has been perfect for me.
Great review! Do you have the mark I or mark II version of this lens? I’m about to get the Canon R6ii this Tuesday and thinking about buying a lens like this also. Thanks.
Mk 1 without VR/IS
Did you test 2x extender with it? Highly appreciate your reply thank you
Yes I did. ruclips.net/video/YLM6I0YMbn8/видео.html
@@DLivingston thank you very much for your reply 💐
Which 2x extender is compatible with 3002.8 non is? - 1st gen extender or 2nd gen extender (ii)? Thank you
I have 1.4 iii, does it work with that lens on r6? Appreciate your reply. Thank you
I’ve used both. I’m pretty sure any canon extender will work with this lens.
excellent video Derek....when using the r6 with the 300mm f2.8 did you use elecronic shutter or mechanical?
Thanks and I switch back and forth between the two but as of recently I have been in mechanical more often. In electronic youll get more frames per second but you will see a bend in the bat and the ball will be longated.
@@DLivingston ok. But when mechanical your fps isn’t 12 unless you have the version 2 of the 300. At what fps for mechanical were you shooting ?
One question. Are you using a monopod? I have always used a 100-400 without monopod. Gives me back pain at times. I am not sure the umpires will allow me a monopod inside the fence line behind 3rd? I find my 300mm a bit heavy without a monopod. I recently got the 100-500 for my R6 and will be trying that out this week for baseball or softball.Thx
I do use a monopod with my 300mm. I have used it without a monopod but that was basketball so I am not holdiing it up for very long. I have never had an issue using a monopod with umps, heck they have never spoken to be to be honest and I move around a good bit. As long as you're not out where you can get hit I am sure youre fine. As long as you follow the facility guidlines of where media can be, youll be good.
Hey Derek! Just happened to see one of your comments on one of John Hill's videos and was like I wonder if that's the Derek I know!? Had no idea you had a channel up here! Keep it up buddy, your shots are looking great! Liked, Commented, and Subscribed! :D
How crazy is that. John Hill is one of my favorites to watch on youtube! Yep, been at it for a couple of years and finally catching my stride I would say. Or at least it's not so much work but more play to create videos. Ill sub to your channel as well! Hope all is well!
@@DLivingston Thanks! Going to be rebranding my channel a bit hopefully sooner than later. No longer at the dealership so going to take it in a similar but broader direction. We'll see how it goes! :D
I found my Canon ef 300mm f2.8L IS USM lens a little slow on the R6. Is that the case with yours?
Ive never had any issues regarding speed to be honest but I have only used a native rf 300mm once or twice. Im sure adapting does have it's downsides but ive been using mine for a few years now for many different sports and it gets the job done.
the bat at :58 is rough, rolling shutter really showing through. Maybe shoot mechanical for baseball?
Yeah, I typically shoot mechanical but flip back and forth from time to time. Rolling shutter really is a pain on the r6 in that situation.
@@DLivingston for sure was in my r6 MII, happy to report the r5 mark II has little to none.
@mattgericke4537 that’s great news! Someday I’m sure I’ll upgrade at some point to one of those. Really would like an r3.
