How Gruesome Is The Real Life Midsummer Festival?

  • All is not as it seems with Midsommar and whilst there aren’t any demons or monsters or supernatural entities for us to dissect, there are a whole bunch of elements and details that seem to have been ripped straight out of history. We get the village of Halsingland, we get the creepy cult with its specific set of rules and traditions, we have Nordic symbols, ominous chants and the real life festival of Midsummer that was officially established by Swedish Parliament in 1952 to celebrate the beginning of summer. To any casual viewer, these might simply be tailored plot devices and cleverly designed literary props to create a more authentic feel to the narrative, and whilst that is undoubtedly true in some respects, in this episode, we’ll be investigating the potentiality of a real cult behind the festival of Midsummer and determining how much from the movie is Hollywood fluff, and how much of it emanates the darker side of Sweden.

I have a theory that the reason "Midsommar" was made is simply because the director saw a lot of people getting a terrifying perception of Sweden when the scandinavian vampire movie "Let the Right One In" came out, so he said: "Now you'll see how REALLY terrifying Sweden can be without fantasy elements..." 😈

Ari aster said he made it about a break up. Just so happened he used the mid sommar as a setting when it was happening

    Reasons Sweden is known for:
*1.* Bizarre and gruesome pagan festivals that make you understand why the population ended up converting to christianity
*2.* Barbarian warriors that everyone believes wore horned helmets despite that fact being completely untrue
*3.* Hostages falling in love with their kidnappers
    *4.* Sabaton
*5.* Gigantic furniture malls that serve you barely digestible meatballs
*6.* Grim Reapers that give you extra life seconds for playing chess with them
*7.* C*strated vampire children who love puzzles, speak Morse code and give us a much more mature love story than those of "Twilight"

Sorry, pal, but, considering the great amount of people who get lost inside those gigantic malls, I have the strange feeling the flesh those things are made of isn't precisely animal 😅

I thought it was a warning to people of how terrifying cults can be and how easily normal intelligent people can be sucked in. But that's just my take on it

12:15 the story reminds me of a similar german tale from the middle ages called "pied piper of hamelin".
Its a story about a town hiring a man with a magic pipe to lure away the rats out of town, however the town refuses to pay him and as revenge he lures the children away from the town never to be seen again.

Uppsala in Sweden was an important religious centers to 'Viking ' period Swedes.
Uppsala had a temple to Odin, thor and Freyja.
It's believed that human sacrifice took place there every nine years, where nine people would be chosen as worthy sacrifices to the Gods.
Bloodeagle definitely did happen, and Saga was the only evidence there was, Scandinavia didn't keep records like other civilisations.
The Bloodeagle wasn't given to just any common criminal, it was reserved for very 'special ' people/occasions.

Was I the only viewer of Midsommar who got strong The Wicker Man vibes from it? The two share strong narratives of pagan beliefs clashing with conservative modern views. And both use human sacrifice as an important plot element. Also, the climax of each film used clear foreshadowing elements in their respective stories.
