"Have You Seen Her" is one of my favorites. This is a good selection!
The instrument is called a melodica. A hand held keyboard you blow with your mouth. Sounds like a harmonica.
I thought it was a harmonica! Thank you. I'll research it as I'm curious.
Jon baptiste often plays this great instrument.
And you can see one in a photo from the video at 5:30
Jay, another R&B group from the 70's I don't believe you've reacted to yet is The Main Ingredient. They had hits with songs like Everybody Plays The Fool, and Just Don't Want To Be Lonely.
The lead singer is Cuba Gooding Sr., father of actor Cuba Gooding Jr.
Excellent choices!@@johnsexton2200
The Staple Singers!!
1. I’ll Take You There
2. Respect Yourself
Great family group, great singing!!
You heard them once perform with the band now you need to hear them on their own!!!
I would add If You're Ready (Come Go With Me) and their version of The Weight.
☕☕🎶🎵🎶
Remakes of both of those became chart hits again for other acts, [1] by General Public and [2] by Bruce Willis.
Delfonics - "Didn't I" or The Stylistics - "You Make Me Feel Brand New"
Everyone needs to thumbs up this comment.
Delfonics!
@memorylane7068, the song "You Make Me Feel Brand New" is by The Stylistics. The Delfonics had two great songs "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time" and "La La Means I Love You."
@@tmr626 I put Stylistics in front of the title.
You Make Me Feel Brand New is a great song.
Gosh this song makes me cry, the music, the lyrics and the vocals. It went to # 1 in 1972, great childhood memories
Some other 70s soul to check out: The spinners - it’s a shame; The o’jays - for the love of money, family reunion, stairway to heaven, emotionally yours (bob dylan cover); Stylistics - people make the world go round, break up to make up, i’m stone in love with you, you make me feel brand new; The undisputed truth - smiling faces sometimes; Friends of distinction - going in circles, love or let me be lonely
GREAT list!!!
Motown was an incredible era in American music. Worth a deep dive for sure.
Motown wasn't an era, it was a label. The Chi-lites signed with Brunswick out of Chicago.
@Zebred2001 yes, you are correct. I was referring to the sound that has come to be known as the "Motown" sound. May not fit in every case, but generally true imo.
Kinda like Grunge in the 90's wasn't always out of Seattle, but it was still that sound.
I love this song. Your expressions while listening are the same as mine. It warms my heart. Virtually every boomer knows this song and can probably sing the lyrics.
1972 stands out in my life as a stupendous year for radio music from all artists.
Thank you, Jordan ❤❤
Love your positivity J… get well soon! ❤
Man, I’m so fortunate to have grown up in this era of great music. I can still remember hearing these classics for the first, second time on the radio. Having my mom drive me down to whitefront, Zodeys etc to pick out a 45 once a month. This one I picked out.
I started really listening to the radio in the very early 70's. One of my first favorite songs was this one. Thank you so much for bringing back a 50-year-old memory. Hope you feel better soon!
Radio at it's best 50-70s...all night long.
Smokey ushered in that quiet storm genre, just was great radio all around.
Chi Lites _ Coldest day of my life............ this one will tear your heart out . Make sure you listen to extended version
Agreed. The strings and oboe at the start is fantastic
I never knew of this version. I only heard it by Paul Young which is beautiful, but I think I like this one even better
Would love some Paul Young, don't remember hearing any on this channel
Especially since Jay mentioned more blue eyed soul…definitely check out Paul Young’s version of this song. Also do Everytime You Go Away if you haven’t already 👍🏾
In fairness, most of Paul Young's singles were covers but boy did he do them well!
This is not a version, it's the original.
Hey, Jay! Please dig into the old school R&B catalog and feature the Spinners, Delfonics, and Stylistics. Also, check out tunes from the Intruders. For blue-eyed soul, check out The Soul Survivors and their hit, "Expressway to Your Heart."
Bangin list, may I add a few more......⬇️
Temptress
Dynamic superiors
Moments
Skip MaHoaney
Black Ivory
Bloodstone
Escorts...Just a few, there is plenty more!! 👌
Chi-Lites lead singer was Eugene Record! Hauntingly Beautiful Vocals!
I love this song. My sister used to listen to this music. She has passed now but such great music from the 70s
One of the best. This is song timeless. It has been popular forever. This generation will remember this song from its part in an episode of "The Sopranos."
Right. Good song, caused a bad night for Assemblyman Zellman.
The belt.. Lol
"Oh Girl" was written by Eugene Record and released in 1972. In 2000, BMI named this song being done by the Chi-Lites as the 36th most popular song of the 20th century. The Chi-Lites doing this song was used on a number of movies over the years and even episodes of Baywatch.
The lead singer is Eugene Record. If memory serves me correctly, this song is also written by Eugene and is based on his love life.
Paul Young did a great cover of this in the 80s or 90s. It's still one of my favorite songs.
Tear your playhouse down ….by paul young is a banger
The instrument is a melodica. Looks like a small keyboard with a tube coming out one end
In the original recording group member Marshall Thompson played a harmonica. On stage he would use both the harmonica and melodica.
This song brought Tony Soprano to tears.
Another great reaction.
The instrument you asked about being played is a harmonica.
Sadly, lead vocalist and songwriter, Eugene Record passed away a few years ago from cancer, may he rest in peace.
It’s actually a melodica which is a mouthpiece blown into a hand held keyboard. Has a sound that resembles a harmonica but a completely different instrument.
70's gold.
When "black" music was excellent and we all listened.
"Stoned Out Of My Mind, For God's Sake Give More Power To The People and Are You My Woman?" by The Chi-Lites. Are You My Woman is sampled by a certain Queen B.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The Manhattan’s Kiss and Say Goodbye is another great song
Ooooh J....
They have so many great songs. If you enjoy them then you should check out Delfonics, Stylistics, The Casinos & so many groups with this sound. ❤
Love it👌🏻 First single I ever bought was Homely Girl by the Chilites, happy memories ❤️
Get well soon soon Jay Great song ❤
Hope all is well mate. Been listening for years and enjoy your work. Regards M.S. from England.
Timeless song!
There's another one I haven't heard in a long time, but remember liking it when I was younger
, You ever see the movie about a few in k?Brothers question and may get called lightning in a bottle question mark that's it like and then it's got some great performances in the front brothers desire to
Being a teenager in the 80’s, I had only heard the Paul Young cover. Love this!
Thanks for getting back to the Chi lites. There's so many groups in this era. Here's some suggestions
Chi lites Pay You Back (1971)
Chi lites Lonely Man (1972)
Sometimes Else's Arms (1973)
Manhattan's One Life To Live (1972)
Manhattan's There's No Me Without You (1973
Manhattan's With That You Were Mine (1973)
Manhattan's Kiss And Say Goodbye (1976)

Temptations I Wish It Would Rain (1968)
Four Tops Still Waters Run Deep (1970) thanks as always Jay
Hope life is going well for you
My favorite Chi Lites song!!
Remakes of two songs form this group charted in 1990, Paul Young with this and MC Hammer with "Have You Seen Her".
absolutely love Paul Young's version
The Chi-Lites - Are you My Woman (Tell Me So). You need to hear this one!
AWWWW, MANNN!!! LOVE THE CHI-LITES!! MAN - a PURE DELIGHT for the ears!! ENJOY, JAY!! HUGS from TEXAS!!!
I love this song so much! Not heard it in years. Thanks for reacting to it so I can be reminded of how much I love the chi lites
First comment! I love your content! Keep it coming 💯❤️
Another song by the Chi- lites is the Coldest Days Of My Life. Talking about heartache this one speaks to the loss of someone you love.
what stood out for me was the harmonica like instrument it was like a flute but had a keyboard like a piano and was hand held and blown thru a mouthpiece
The soulful sound of Chicago! Their biggest hit, it went all the way to # 1 in 1972. If you ever check out their funky upbeat tune "Are You My Woman," pay attention to the horn lines, you'll recognize the sample featured in a more recent huge hit. The Chi-Lites were led by Eugene Record.
You need to do Paul Young’s cover of this, awesome!
Thanks Rob Squad I've been waiting for this reaction.... you're first to do this godspeed ❤❤ Harmonica... need to see them preform it's awesome ❤❤❤ my grandmother played the harmonica while playing guitar 🎸 I miss her so much ❤❤❤
Such a Gem. This is the type of song that makes people say "they don't make music like that anymore".
And for your Blue eyed soul fix, get back to Michael Bolton, you haven't reacted to him in over a year.
The O'Jays: For the Love of Money. It is a classic jam.
"Walking In Rhythm" by The Blackbirds, "Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, "Only The Strong Survive" by Jerry Butler and "You Are My Starship" by Norman Connors are great songs from the 70's that would be new to you Jay. You would like each for different reasons. A late 80's song you may enjoy "Sarah, Sarah" by Jonathan Butler.
I think this song is a Classic that unfortunately isn't Celebrated enough.
STYLISTICS!!
The Chi-Lites are an American R&B/soul vocal quartet from Chicago. Forming at Chicago's Hyde Park High School in 1959, The group's original lineup consisted ...
Discography · Marshall Thompson (singer) · Eugene Record · Frank Reed (singer). I looked up that instrument that you like in this song and it's a Melodica. And a Melodica is a handheld free-reed instrument similar to a pump organ or harmonica. It features a musical keyboard on top, and is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument. The keyboard usually covers two or three octaves.
always loved this song❤
The Chi-Lites believe it or not had a tune that would put a little funk into your soul. The song was titled "Bottoms Up" which came out in 1983.
Gosh I wish I could go back and relive my 70's ... 😍
Most of themanyway!!!
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever, since it came out when I was a child and we loved it!
The stylistics - something's never change
Mom had their hits 8-track in her 1972 Pontiac LeMans
We had one!
I own the Time Life compact disc "Sounds of the Seventies: 1972" and this is one of those tracks on the cd. Love them. I was 15 when this charted.
Nice! One of the greatest songs of the 70’s
Such a smooth song beautiful ❤
PAUL YOUNG - " Oh Girl " and " Comeback And Stay (Official Music Video) " Paul's Cover Version of " Oh Girl " is Awesome too , really recommend both songs and the second song has a very up tempo 80's groove and blue eyed soul. 🎸🎹🔥
70's sound, i well remember and love. Love Motown ❤
The Chi-lites signed with Brunswick. They weren't actually Motown.
@@Zebred2001Thank you. I was a little hesitant as I wasn't sure.
Sweet Soul music ! 😎👍🎶
The Chi-Lites - Try My Side (of Love)
Hope you feel better. Great reaction.
A true soul song that raised your heart and squeezes it!
Levi Stubbs was an underrated lead vocalist of the 60s/70s. Check out "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", "Baby I Need Your Loving", "Bernadette", "Still Water", "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)", "Standing in the Shadows of Love".
Love love this! Makes me cry because the world is so bad now😢😢😢
There is AMO Vi, a, it's about the F.UN k brothers that's called the lightning and a bottle lightning in a bottle. That's got a lot of great performances john osborne and of course the phone brothers
That John Osborne, I mean endless smoothie here. She is a supermodel super super sexy and then she's her voice.Oh wow i'm like give it to me the right way , all rightThat John Osborne, I mean endless smoothie here. She is a supermodel super super sexy and then she's her voice.Oh wow i'm like give it to me the right way
So glad you finally did this song!
This song was released in 1972 and reached #1 on the Billboard chart in May of that year.
Love it! Brings back memories of my teenage years.
Great tune. Thanks. Hey! You are lookin' good. Keep on, Jay!
🇬🇧
Great reaction Jay, to a beautiful song.
Hope ypu feel better soon🙏🫂🎼
Jay, the album cover in your video shows the one member of the group holding the instrument you’re describing. It’s called a Melodica which is blown into and sounds like a harmonica.
I love both of these sings by the ChiLites!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Homely Girl is another Chi-Lites banger. So is A Letter To Myself!
Beautiful song by the Chi-Lites. I've never noticed it before, but the harmonica/melodica sounds remind me of the first number 1 hit in the UK for a young Michael Jackson (solo) "One Day in Your Life". Another song about a breakup.
One of my all time favourites from many years ago.
The lead in this song is Eugene Record. Eugene also sings falsetto on their songs. Are You My Woman. Lonely Man and I Wanna Pay You Back.
Great you are still so positive! Love this reaction! Get well soon!❤😊
One of my favorites.
Live in GA not near the beach, but we had a man made beach with an artesian well and white sand hauled in. There was a concession area on one side. Across the beach the teens would gather. I remember lying on the beach, the smell of Coppertone, and this song wafting over the water from loudspeakers of the jukebox at the concession stand. Thx.
Ahhhh...the smell of Coppertone = the smell of my summers in Virginia Beach ⛱
One of my favorite motown songs.
'If I Had A Girl' from 1977 have always been my favorite from them.
I've been waiting a long time for this one. One of my favorites. Thanks
A personal favorite- fantastic song.
Love this song for years. If you haven’t already listened to Have You Seen her. It’s another beautiful one by them.
Another Great one grew up with these songs i was lucky enough to be around with all this great stuff on the radio
The most soulful song ever! Love everything they did!
For some old school blue-eyed soul, check out the Average White Band’s “A Love of Your Own”!
Takes me back to So Cal in '72 (when I was 26) and reminds me very much of a particular girl. It's great how music does that.
Love this one! Thank you. 😊
Beautiful song
Great reaction. Other songs by the Chi-Lites include *"Give More Power to the People", "A Lonely Man", "Write a Letter to Myself", "The Coldest Days of my Life" and "Toby".* Also, you can't go wrong with *The Delfonics, The Spinners, Blue Magic, Intruders and The Stylistics.*
Bro FINALLY!! Thank you😂
The stylistics - you make me feel brand new
One of my absolute favourites from way back!
Great memories in 70s in Uk
Tavares are mainly known for their disco hits, but they are a fantastic sweet soul group too - a few tracks that you should consider are :
I Hope She Chooses me
Hard Core Poetry
Goodnight My Love(great version)
Many others too
