Worth noting they are all RUSSIAN and RUSSIAN is their first language primarily they don’t even speak English. YET they NAIL 100% the music.
They are primarily a Chicago cover band but that Chicago is a huge fan AND LEONID has more views in most cases THAN Chicago

I wouldn't be so quick to say they don't speak english. Many foreign countries learn english in primary schools as a second language.
They themselves have said they don't speek Engalsky
Leonid speaks English, the lead guitarist speaks English, Ksenia speaks seven languages fluently including English.

What you left out is they are for the most part all Russian and their English is very limited. This is not only a cover band but one of the best bands around today

Leonid added the strings to the original. their Chicago covers are every note perfect to the originals and are amazing. I'm an old Chicago mega fan, and I was seriously impressed.

Tim Jester: Can't agree more. I used to listen to all of Chicago's LPs as a kid and loved them. But when I saw Leonid recently I could't believe how much cleaner they sounded. They're all excellent musicians. Dare I say they sound better than Chicago.

But now, everytime I hear a Chicago tune, all I see in my mind is Leonid & Friends performing... They sound cleaner, fresher & tighter than the originals.

Ksenia has a masters degree (can't recall in what) and she speaks (and sings) in 5 different languages. She sang to us in Chinese at their San Diego concert.

I love their covering of various American artists, but what I really like is that no matter what kind of idiots run the governments of our world, the people are still just people and music lovers.
Given that English is not their first language, not too shabby. I thought they tried very hard to be faithful to the original. I thought they did well.
While nobody can replace Earth, Wind and Fire, this group brings a lush sound to a classic. I love this group.
Leonid and Friends do an AMAZING job on all their cover songs. Keeping in mind they're not singing in their native language (Russian/Ukranian), but they do these songs justice. They mostly focus on old Chicago songs, which are what I grew up listening to!! (Yeah... I'm old!!)
Here's the thing I grew up with Earth Wind and Fire, I also studied music for 20 years. It's a perfect cover note for note. The biggest difference between this and the original is that Maurice White is singing the original ... now no body get after me here ... Maurice is black and has a very special sound to his voice because of that. Outside of that, in other words it's note for note. The sound is slightly different BUT MOST PEOPLE Can't tell the difference ... think about this these are Russians singing a great song ... Leonid and Friends are touring the US, What many people don't know is that Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire have been touring together for years ... why because the two groups go well together. Leonid covers both groups and do a fantastic job of it ... what I want them to do is start writing their own music in the same style. For me it is great to hear someone cover both bands, I love horns in a rock band.
I agree with the last part of your statement. They will not be a GREAT band until they start doing their OWN music. They won't be great covering other people's music and arrangements. They have to get their Own sound. Bands need to have an identity. This group will never have an identity other than a good cover band, of which there are Thousands, until they break out and do something original. What band ever won a Grammy because they sounded just like somebody else?

I usually don't like covers very much. I'm kind of old school like that. But when I heard this and their story I thought of you. The main guy who was the bass player in the bell bottom jeans. Took songs like this one and a lot of Chicago songs and wrote out all the instrumentation and vocals and harmonies by ear. They did not have any sheet music. Only by ear did he give everyone sheet music. Plus they're from Russia so English is not their first language. So that just reminded me of you mrm. And I was honestly impressed by their covers. They actually did a short tour in the US or earlier this year. They're definitely worth checking out. Thanks for the request

I would like to add: Any published sheet music would not have gotten them that close to the original. I have been playing in small bands since primary school, done a lot of English/American pop/rock music, and the few times I actually had the chance to lay hands on a printed version it was far from what we heard on the record (I would rather call it sh*t music). As you can hear, Leonid & Friends are doing a great job - because they do it by ear to that great extent (the transcriptions are just an aide to organizing and memorizing the stuff).

Not only Chicago, but Earth, Wind & Fire, Bllod, Sweat, and Tears, and a couple of regional American groups. East River is an exceptional song from a group that I had never heard of until LAF recorded it. Just proves that music is the International language of friendship!
Lexington Lab Band, and several others from around the world. Music is the language of friendship, the whole world over! Except for a couple of groups like the Taliban, and ISIS, who are tone deaf..and wiuldn't recognize a good rhythm if you hit them in the head with a baseball bat..

A Facebook friend inadvertently turned me on to this group today, and I can truthfully say that NOW I understand the lyrics! I Love EW&F, and have seen them play this song live in concert. But this (white-Russian) band was fantastic at performing this album cut with such clarity and energy! And as a former trumpet player, I am totally diggin' that clear brass🎺 sound, it gives me chills! This group is REAL and not a computer sound! They are TIGHT, and that's the way I like it, and that's MY opinion! Thanks.
The cover was great, if you consider that these are Russian musicians who just love our classic music. English is not their first language.
That said, I recommend their Chicago covers. Pick whatever you like.

Their horn section is what really makes the band. It's powerful and spot on with the horn, sax and trombone 😁

Snapp! Seeing this took be by surprise. Earlier this year I checking them out and they were only scheduled for 3 places then back home, or so I thought. Wonder how many other shows any Chicago band members played with them like in what was it Clearwater?
Coming to Birmingham Al in October. Hope to see them then! They were postponed last year because if the pandemic, not long after I found them... I CAN'T WAIT!!!
These musicians are in-credible!! They do Chicago like a boss! We saw them in 2019 on their first tour of the USA and y'all must go see them live !!
FINALLY! You found them! Leonid and Friends; best cover band "in America" right now!! (And none (as far as i know, speak English!) There is hardly a song from 78/79, (or for that matter anytime) that brings the good feelings this song continues to bring. And I don't think any band has nailed it this good since EW&F.
Yes, they all speak English. Although Vlad and Igor are a little bit slower with it. Sergey received a guitar from an American fan and you can here him thank him in nearly perfect English. Leonid's son, Roman, is the manager as well as the MC and introduces the band in great English.
@@kelmo3355 Thank you Kelly. I never mind being corrected. I saw one of them being interviewed and they didn't speak very good English and the interviewee commented that "none of the band speaks very good English." I made assumptions
Love this Band! They rock those songs! No English other than singing! Perfect! They playing is awesome! Amazing!
Remember one thing about this group... They work with no original music... They break down the actual track voice for voice, instrument for instrument and THEN put it together...

What a great band, huh? I was blown away when I came across their first video 3 or 4 years ago and I've been following them ever since. I saw them play at a small venue in Salisbury, MA 2 years ago when they did a limited tour of America and they were phenomenal live, plus, they all seem like really nice people (including their hottest backup singer on the planet!). I had commented on one of their videos that if only musicians handled diplomacy between countries instead of politicians, there would be a lot less confrontation around the world. 😁

I agree with you Sir. You are not saying anything against this group, it is clearly meant as a compliment. They may not have the "Soul" style of EW&F, but they have the closest thing to the actual SOUND of EW&F, as well as Chicago and others. Few white people could dance on Soul Train, and there's a good reason for this! So, for a white Russian cover band, they've got it goin on! 👍
@@steverudder3321 For an American band, Earth Wind and Fire were very good. How does that sound to you? (Many European and Russian musicians are far better than most players in the USA, btw. This has been true for a long time, and in jazz at least since the 1950s.)
Leonid and Friends are incredible!! The fact that they somehow "memorized" the actual English vocals along with the spot-on musicianship of the band members, has to be an act of God! :D
I watched a video/interview about Leonid and Friends, and (not saying anything bad) but only a few members who were interviewed, spoke very limited English. They are an unbelievable band that puts the original band members to shame!!

Yeah, "nice little cover" is like saying Ksenia isn't " half bad" looking. These guys absolutely kill it. Hard to say where they're the most amazing, but 25 or 6 to 4 might do it for me, between Sergey's guitar, Igor's drums and the horns (not that everyone else doesn't do great).
What are you reacting to? How well a group Covered Earth, Wind and Fire? Covering "note for note" is NOT good enough. That's what amateurs do. The arrangements have already been done. It's like what they do with classical music. Copying note for note, and the "skill" is in how well you can COPY somebody else's masterpiece. Very rarely better than the original. And they used girls for the backgrounds. NO girls in Earth, Wind and Fire. American groups use women to sing their old songs when they can no longer hit the notes.
@choprjock I so agree with you! That "nice little cover" really bugged me too. They breathe new life into everything they perform. Their audio/video production is second to none.
Their sound quality and their playing is damn good, you just have to get your best headphones.

These guys are my favorite cover band of all time. They are true professionals musically. This song is no different than the rest of their music and I really like listening to them. Their ability to play on video as you saw is out standing. Aside from some very small language differences (they are Russian and speak Russian for the most part) they are identical to the original.
What is interesting about nearly all (if not all) of the songs that they put out, Leonid puts out the scores for all of the instruments and vocals, ... picking apart the original sound, and breaking it down into vocals, horns, saxes, percussion, etc. The guy is incredible, ... what an incredible gift he has.
I have followed this band for a year or so and everything they do just blows my mind. The total respect and need to get it perfect from bands that I grew up with is pure class.
I have both the original version and this version. I am amazed how good Leonid and Friends do on this and other songs. Only one is Ukranian, the rest are Russuan. Love your comment, and how you worded it. I have actually played this version for people who are familiar with the original, and they can hardly tell the difference. Thank you again for your review. I loved Earth Wind and Fire when I was a teenager. Now that they are no longer around, it is nice that a group like this keeps their sound alive. I know I can always listen to their music whenever I want, but it's cool to know that a group like this keeps their music alive. And that's a real honor, to keep that sound alive without altering it. And to you newcomers who enjoy this music, listen to the original by Earth, Wind & Fire, you will love this song even more. I had their album when I was a teenager and put them up at top with Queen (and some other great artists).
So good, I'm paying to see them in Seattle in November. When you can go from RUclips sensation to selling out concert halls and clubs, you KNOW you're a great cover band!

I've listened to their Chicago covers which they are fantastic! Close your eyes and you would swear you were listening to Chicago, every now and then you hear their Native language sound singing a English song. Again with this song the Music was awesone!! That Horn section!! The Drummer is amazing, vocals, guitars , all is just amazing!
I had the pleasure to see them live last November not September. It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. They play with such enthusiasm and you can't help but dance and sing along. I would love to see them again. Awesome choice type. And God bless you.

Chicago even thinks that they are Chicago! They are why they got noticed in the USA, after a Senator are Reresentative or someone heard them during a visit to Russia. They were blown away. And Leonid just wanted to do a Chicago song for his own birthday, with some VERY talented friends...

Saw Leonid and Friends this past Tuesday at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville. We live about 90 miles from the venue and the whole trip back home , one word came when we discussed the concert...WOW!!!! Just WOW!! They exceeded ALL of our expectations with a landslide performance!! We were just blown away. The only regret we had is we could not do it all over again the next night and the night after that. If the tour comes close to you I urge you to get tickets...You will not regret it!!!
AND BTW....They had translators there to translate what they wanted to say to the crowd......but when they sing...The only one you could REALLY tell was Russian was Leonid himself.
@@NormSaucemam Translators? I've been to 5 concerts. Leonid's son, Roman, does the intros, but most of them speak either excellent or passable English (except Vlad Popov).

@@NormSaucemam As someone who has spoken with Leonid many, many times, I can attest that he speaks decent enough English. His son Roman, who is absolutely fluent in English, only helps out on occasion when a more complex question is asked, or the question requires a more complex answer.
Going to see Leonid & Friends in Chicago in December. Can't wait! They are amazing musicians and voices.
An Earth Wind and Fire fan. I liked it. It was surprisingly good. I think most if not all of these folks are Russian. Very good cover. Would like to see this group do more EW & F songs. Lotta talent there.
Something else that was left out. The creator of this group, Leonid, transcribes everything in his head then creates his musical charts. He's the bass player. Also plays keys and sings. You should hear is Chicago covers. I want to see them in person. They already toured the US and will probably tour again.

Grew up in the 70's :) Earth Wide & Fire, Chicago, Tower of Power, and Sly & The Family Stone were my favorite bands!!! As for "Leonid & Friends......that simply Kick Ass!!!

Best cover of an amazing song, I even think it may be better than the original. Love Leonid and Friends, the fact that English is not their first language makes this cover group even more special.
Love their covers! Yes, they're a copy, BUT they stay true to working hard to cover note by note AND capture the feeling of the song. It's a great homage to one of the best groups of the '70's.

Ty. I’ve recently discovered Leonid and friends and they do some very good covers of different groups like Chicago, EW&F. Phillip Bailey and EW&F were great. Fantastic instrumentals and tight vocals. They were and still are a favorite from that era.
Leonid & Friends could rock the sox off a bowlegged, charging, pygmy, goat in the winter!!! They do an excellent job at anything they do. And I've heard other bands try and cover the same material without nearly as good results.
The backstory on these guys is amazing. It's been said that they sound more like Chicago than Chicago does!
Leonid and his friends are hitting home run after home run with many of our favorite recent memory tunes from Chicago, EWF and others including their recent rendition of Steely Dan's My Old School which they ace, as well. In a era of mostly garbage filled airwaves they are a tonic for crying ears.
Been a fan for a couple years now. What an amazing amount of talent. They sound good when they all harmonize. Their horns and percusion is spot on. To copy Terry Kath is almost impossible but this guy does do a great job. Their only weakness is sometimes on vocals but not this song. I hope they keep it together. They are in the top 5 best cover bands.
I wish I could afford to bring them in for my daughter’s wedding in June 2021. If I was rich I’d have them play in Pittsburgh for reception

By the way, the girl singer Khasinia Bushina (SP)? is incredible. She speaks 7 different languages perfectly, is a classical pianist and has a doctorate degree in world economic !!! She also has several albums out on her on. Leonid is so fortunate to have her added to his arsenal. Check her out on You Tube.
