In this week's episode, we explore the unique features of Jyu Capsule Hotel, a historic gem nestled within a preserved shophouse along Smith Street. This four-story haven offers a distinctive blend of contemporary design and cultural inspiration.
Located on a bustling yet pedestrian-friendly tourist street, Jyu Capsule Hotel is a testament to the rich history of Cantonese opera. The concept draws from the past, where opera troupes would travel in boats featuring double-decker beds, akin to the modern capsule hotel concept.
Upon entering, guests encounter self-check-in kiosks on the lobby's right. This straightforward process provides access to their hotel key card. Moving to level two, visitors will find meticulously organized shoe lockers, each designated by their card number for added convenience.
The communal lounge on level two offers a large communal table for dining and a quartz countertop for staff assistance. A well-equipped pantry boasts fridges, microwaves, water dispensers, and sinks for guests' use.
A tea pavilion, adorned with low, black wooden tables and cushions, invites relaxation. The design is influenced by traditional oriental pavilions, encouraging a low-seating experience.
The hotel's design language incorporates overlapping lines, reminiscent of Cantonese opera stages constructed with wooden members bound together. This design motif is evident throughout the space.
The bathrooms are unisex, with each cubicle featuring WC and shower facilities. The vanity mirror is highlighted by sage-green tiles that serve as a feature wall.
The neutral material palette includes light woods, creating a calming ambiance. Ambient lighting in the rooms adds to the cozy atmosphere.
The capsules are equipped with a TV, individual lockers, clothing hooks, and blinds for privacy. There are also double beds with twice the charging points, perfect for couples.
A series of lockers can house baggage, and a laundromat provides additional convenience. Privacy screens and custom carpentry contribute to the seamless design.
Inspired by Cantonese opera performers, a dressing table opens up to reveal a mirror and makeup tools. The design immerses guests in the history and culture of Cantonese opera.
Jyu Capsule Hotel combines historical charm with modern comforts, offering a unique experience for travellers. It's a captivating blend of culture, design, and comfort in the heart of a vibrant city.

Love the tasteful and creative interpretation of its historical roots. Designs that lean too much into its past often have garish outcomes. But this Jyu capsule hotel is classy and classical. Well done!

Difficult to climb onto the upper deck. Secondly the coffin-like confined space is narrow. Thirdly I had been to other capsule hostel which has big enough compartment to keep my 🎒. Therefore I could change clothes inside the capsule instead of showing off my sexy body to other occupants in the shared space 😅

Where do I put my luggage? Who are your target customers? I travel to Singapore annually to visit my family and I stay in hotel or with friends. I like this hotel concept but I would like to find more to see whether it's suitable for my needs.
