      The people moat responsible for creating the conditions of WW2 werr the British & French Prime Ministers. Without the revenge & suffering it was designed by them to inflict (esp economically) by those two men, the desperate situation leading to the rise of Hitler wouldn't have been created.
      That is an example of the cost of resentment.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Mariana_Islands
      The people of the Northern Mariana Islands decided in the 1970s not to seek independence, but instead to forge closer links with the United States. Negotiations for commonwealth status began in 1972 and a covenant to establish a commonwealth in political union with the United States[13] was approved in a 1975 referendum. A new government and constitution came into effect in 1978 after being approved in a 1977 referendum. The United Nations approved this arrangement pursuant to Security Council Resolution 683.

      FastenTheFalafels Dude you are obviously pro-Germany from the beginning. Of course Germany wasn't responsible alone for WWI but they sure were the only Nation to attack france on their own soil. You also seem to forget that almost all the fighting on the western front was in France. Whole regions were destroyed, the industry crippled and millions of french were killed (they had the most casualties of the western countries) and on top of that, Germany did the same with france in 1870. It was easy for countries like England or the US to say "oh hey don't be so mad at Germany let's not punish them too much" when they weren't really involved other than with combat troops. From this standpoint, I think it's pretty understandable and justified that France was pissed.

    • @MrFerreti
      @MrFerreti 7 лет назад +27

      Not the single biggest. There were a lot of causes for the rise o Nazism and WWII. One of those is the 1929 economic crisis or the the political instability by the loss of the monarchy or the flawed Weimar constitution.
      The example that the rise of fascism in Italy set, the constant border clashes with Poland in the East, the impressions of the Russian civil war, the red terror and the resulting refugee wave.

      Jan Winterhalter As is the case with WW2 blaming one single factor for the entire war would be a rather port historical analysis. Revanchism for the humiliation after WW1, was of course one of the biggest factors that sparked the war, but also ideological goal were pursued: "Liberation" from what Hitler saw as land controlled by the Jews and the subsequent extermination of the so called "Jewish conspirators" and the establishment of an Aryan Europe. As well as the acquisition of Lebensraum (space for settlement) in the East and fear of communist aggression, which in the end prompted the failed Operation Babarossa.

    SUMMARY OF PART ONE AND TWO
    The Treaty of Versailles, What Did the Big Three Want? (Video detailed summary)
    (part one)
    * World War I officially came to an end with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.

    * 32 countries had come together in Paris in January 1919 to hold a conference which would make peace after the First World War.

    * It would be dominated by the big three:

    * David Lloyd George representing Britain;

    * Georges Clemenceau representing France;

    * Woodrow Wilson representing the USA.

    * Germany was not invited.

    * The Big Three wanted different things for Germany and disagreed on how harshly they were to be punished reflecting how their countries were treated in the war.

    * They had to negotiate with each other until there was a compromise.

    * This was difficult because Wilson was opposed to harsh punishment for Germany.

    * The USA had not been involved in the war as long as Britain and France and had not received as much damage. He wanted to prevent another world war by creating the league of nations based on his fourteen points to ensure Germany would not be destroyed and that Germany shouldn't be blamed for the war.

    * Clemenceau (france) aims were the harshest of the three -- representing the damage Germany had done to France's land and people and its threatening proximity. He wanted revenge and to punish Germany to return Alsace Lorraine to France, an independent Rhineland, no league of nations, Germany to pay huge reparations for the damage and losses caused, the disbandment of the German Army so that Germany would never be strong enough to attack France again.

    * Lloyd George (Britain) was an in-between. This reflected Britain which had little land damage, but high war losses. He wanted a punishment that would be tough enough to please those who wanted to make Germany pay, but would leave Germany strong enough to still trade land for Britain's Empire to safeguard Britain's naval supremacy.

    * When the Treaty of Versailles was ready, Germany was shown the document, but there was no negotiation, their rebuttal ignored.

    * On 28th June 1919 the Delegates met at the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles near Paris and forced two German representatives to sign it.

    ------
    The Treaty of Versailles, Terms of the Treaty (Video detailed summary)
    (part two)
    * The terms of the Treaty of versailles can be divided into three groups

    * Territorial, military, financial and economic

    * Here are some of the territorial terms

    * Lorraine was returned to france

    * Germany was forbidden to unite with Austria lands in East Germany Including the farmlands of Posen and the polish corridor between East Germany and East prussia were given to poland

    * The Saar Which Had rich coal fields were given to France for 15 years

    * All Germany's colonies were taken and given to France and britain as mandates

    * Here are some of the military terms

    * The German army was restricted to only 100,000 men. The Navy could now only have six battleships and no submarines and there was to be no air force allowed

    * The Rhineland was demilitarized this meant the German army could not go to this area between France and Germany

    * For the financial and economic terms

    * Germany would have to pay reparations which would eventually be set at an enormous 132 Billion Gold marks on top of this germany was not allowed to join the league of nations and had to accept responsibility for causing all the damage and Loss by the war

    * Overall the Treaty of versailles was unpopular with Germany and its creators

    * Its terms would go on to be reversed by Germany in both secret and in the open by Hitler and help cause world war two

      Okay, so your first videos are pretty decent although they lack your now usual narration. Starting from The assasination of Ferdinant, the next videos are all prettry good, I mostly like the episodes on WWI and WWII, I feel like they represent an important and fascinating part of our history. I Like your brief overview of WWII and I imagine that you and your team would be able to make a great serie out of WWII. I also like your video about the Blitz since it has that particularity of involving the viewer in the war, what would he do in those circumstances, the simple fact of thinking about it gives me goosepumps. Also I've noted that the voice of the narrator keeps changing, all of them are satisfying in case you were deciding who was best suited for narrating :p

    • @Simplehistory
      @Simplehistory  8 лет назад +4

      Thanks Simple History has come quite a way since 2013. That's interesting that you found the Blitz video the most immersive. Because of the nature of the Blitz bringing the war to the homefront in which civilians experienced it on their doorstep, the directness to the viewer in the video worked quite well I think. For narration, I like to have a variety of voices to suit different types of history. :)

    WWI and WWII were caused by a lack of empathy. The inability to place ones-self in your opponent's point of view is ultimately a detriment to that country. Serbia was unwilling to give reasonable demands to Austria, Austria was unrealistic in its expectations for justice, Germany egged on Austria, Russia egged on Serbia, France for patronizing Germany, and Britain tried to look neutral despite a protectorate alliance with France. They all got a world of stupid from being stupid.
    US's participation in WWI was all but certain with the blockade and debt incurred to the British/Allies. Think of all the money that was lent, do you really think the US wasn't going to go to war with all that debt at stake.
    Then all ridiculous killing and finger-pointing. In the end, the politicians were reflecting the sentiment of their people, which was essentially anger. They should of all just realized how stupid they were and went about trying to rebuild their lives. But nope, need to blame something or someone for all this death and despair. It must be the losers of the war that are at fault.

    Denied the cost of creating and maintaining an army of six million and a navy of three hundred ships, Germany had plenty with which to rebuild the homes, churches, factorys, ports, railways, farms, flooded fields and ruined crops, their desire for European dominance had destroyed. They fought on Belgium, France and financed war by Austro Hungry, Turkey, Irish Republicans, and in Africa. A war of attrition, hunger and disease. A war destroying cities, bridges, boats, irrigation, and twelve million working animals.
    The army the Germans were saved from having to support needed a further six million workers supplying services and material. If they all were employed in rebuilding the people they murdered and stole from, it might take ten years of war free life. Then back to bombast.

    Meanwhile in Hungary: *Am I a joke to you?*
    In all seriousness (and I have a feeling that it's going to be an unpopular opinion), but parts of the territorial losses imposed on Hungary by the Treaty of Trianon was fair. Put down the torches. Hear me out. As a country who was on the loser side, Hungary would lose territory anyway, and not all had hungarian majority. BUT, the fact that the allies (mainly looking at you, France) gave territories to neighbouring countries where hungarians were in a majority, now that was unfair. Also unfair that in areas where it was unclear who was in a majority, the allies didn't initiate a referendum. It was only done in the case of Sopron, and Sopron voted to remain in Hungary.

    The war was caused by the death of the Austrio-Hungarian emperor at the hands of Serbians. Yet it was the defeated that took the blame. Germany wasn't treated horribly for its damage dealt during the war, but for losing the war itself.

      Austria-Hungary has been dissolved, because the King leaved and all the countries in the Empire got their independence. You can't punish someone who died. Same for the Ottoman Empire, France and Great-britain got pieces of their territories and the country has been dissolved.

      "Learn history"! Google yourself the treaties of St. Germain (Austria) ("and the remains are Austria") and Trianon (Hungarian) (loosing hugh land)! Also "unfair" treaties. If France was treated like this after the napolnian wars, there wouldn't be a french nation today!

    I blame the Allies for WW2. Britian and France may act like they are the good guys, but both were hoping to ensure and secure their own domination over their empires and ensure the status quo was not challenged again by Germany. The treaty itself shows their true intentions.
