Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Painting with the wedge is somewhat effortless for me, I’ve been painting for many years. But each painting still has its challenges, and this was a fun one. I can’t wait to tackle that bronze canvas. Happy painting!
another beautiful work of art.. these videos propel me to keep working with the wedge.. as of yet I have not had very much success.. just blobs of color.. you make it seem very easy to use.. but in reality it is a struggle.. also could you show more of your palette when you dip the wedge into the paint.. thank-you and may God Bless You and Yours.. Dorothy
@@woodseysmith9582 Hi Dorothy! Always nice to see your comments on my videos. Yes, I've never claimed that the wedge was an easy tool. 🙂 I believe my RUclips hydrangea demo shows my color palette and the way I pick up paint with my wedge. I'm sure I will show more like that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion. Happy painting!
I love this tutorial! I also love the periwinkle color with the dark background. I second the request for a video about how you approach composition. I’m glad you started a RUclips channel!
Thanks! Sure thing, I will do a video about composition in the future. I already have my next video already lined up, but I will try to get to one about composition in October. Thanks for the suggestion.
I really love the darker background! I painted a floral one with that in mind and posted it it's a darkish pink burgundy in the back as well. I was quite happy with it! Thanks Kathleen for the inspiration!!!
Hi Kathleen! I love to watch you paint - I always feel so inspired afterwards! I do have two questions. First, how long would you estimate it took for you to complete this painting? Second, do you varnish your paintings and, if so, what do you use? Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful work and talent with us!
Thanks for your questions. My paintings usually take one or 2 hours to complete, regardless of size. I always have an idea for how I want to execute my painting before I begin, but also allow myself to take it in a different direction if it starts evolving differently. For example, I was not sure how my colors would react on such a deep colored background, so I made adjustments along the way (the additions of periwinkle, red violet and deep orange), which were spontaneous decisions. I do like working quickly because it keeps my paintings feeling fresh and not overworked. But I think that kind of confidence comes from years of painting. Regarding varnish, I always varnish with a UV protectant, professional brand varnish such as Liquitex, Golden or Winsor & Newton. Sometimes I use a spray varnish and sometimes a liquid varnish. I don't really have a preference. I do have a short varnishing video here: ruclips.net/user/shortsKW9syaDsmQ8?si=A5zFBF5k2MKNulS1
Thank you, yes this was very inspiring to watch. If I could see the painting in person I’d be tempted to just sit and involve myself with the texture and color movements, much like a large Monet canvas… 🙏🏻 I can’t wait to explore your other videos and try this approach for myself. ❤️ thanks.
Thanks for the great comment. I understand what you mean...I love sitting and looking at paintings for hours, allowing myself to get lost in their details and learning what I can. Thank you.
The first part of the painting, red & green combo, is Stunning. The 2nd part (almost like 2 seperate paintings) is Bold & Beautiful. Your "experimenting", and using a dark background bore great fruit.
Thank you. I liked the painting when it was mostly red and green, but felt it could benefit from the addition of some other colors. That periwinkle was the ticket, I think! Can't wait to get at my other dark canvases that I have prepped and waiting.
Hello, I bought the wedge and painted your hydrangea tutorial on a small canvas and now ready to tackle it on a larger canvas. Do you let your paintings dry before carrying on or are they done mainly wet? I would love to know as I feel maybe some colours could end up muddy whereas your colours always look so fresh
I work mostly wet into wet. I like to keep my layers blendable with each other. Perhaps you are overworking your layers? Not sure, but it does take some practice to overlap wet layers. Maybe try a lighter touch. Happy painting!
Thank you. I attended art school nearly 40 years ago, if you can believe it. This is nothing like what I learned in school. I believe that anyone who is still making art after attending school is self taught in their own right. I study art every day, paint constantly, study other artists, observe the world as an artist and experiment a lot. There is so much more access to the things we want to learn as artists than there was 40 years go. The art school I attended (along with many others) closed their doors forever this year.

Votre toile est sublime 💜🩷❤️ merci beaucoup pour vos partages 😊
Thanks you for watching.
Espetacular! O fundo da tela em tons mais profundos lembra muito os gênios do século XVII, holandeses, espanhóis. Amo sua pintura!
I am honored! Thank you for the kind words!
