  • Salvia, or Salvia Divinorum, is one of the most potent hallucinogenic plants on Earth. It's so powerful it can make you feel like an inanimate object, have an out of body experience, or think your feet are on fire. In fact this plant is so powerful and unique the DEA isn't sure how to regulate it. Join Hank Green for all the fun details on this psychotropic member of the sage genus in this episode of SciShow.

It’s really spooky stuff. I tried just a very little hit with a friend of mine and neither of us liked that trip but he left the rest of the salvia with me and went home. I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea to see what it could really do but I smoked a couple huge tokes on it and my room became a different place I couldn’t walk in. Like a maze. None of my furniture was there anymore and I had to walk down this imaginary hall to my bed that I couldn’t see but I knew where it was supposed to be and bumped into it and laid down. My brain still worked but my eyes could not see reality anymore. I couldn’t walk because there was no floor to walk on. Reality was gone and replaced by a maze of hallways with obviously no way out so I laid there waiting for the hallucination to go away.
When reality returned I took the rest of the salvia and flushed it down the toilet. Scariest trip I ever had and I’ve never tried it again.

One thing I learned about salvia is that if you want interesting hallucinations, you must have an interesting life. The first time I did salvia, I hallucinated that was at the drive thru at Jack In The Box, and I was yelling at my husband to pay the cashier. We were at home. In our living room. Not in a car, and definitely not at Jack in the Box.

Every body can have a different experience with salvia, and I am not the type to hallucinate, even with acid, mescaline, or salvia. But like someone above said, with salvia, you realize that this IS it. You're not "in" the car, you ARE the car. This is the absolute reality we have shielded ourselves from. Unfortunately, for bodies like me, it only lasts a short time, before the defense mechanisms come back on line.

    • @JoeSkutnik
      @JoeSkutnik 10 лет назад +150

This! People take salvia thinking that they can control it or try to. They don't understand that one of the aspects of the experience is to not try to control it... It's actually impossible.
If you don't go with it, if you try to get off the roller coaster once it starts, you're disrespecting and insulting what the plant has to offer and show you. The goddess you're about to meet (regardless, once the trip starts) knows you don't want to be there, and she will make sure you get fucked sideways and the door hits your ass on the way out. It's just a law of salvia.
The way that it temporarily rewires your brain, puts your mind and ego into submissive mode, and if you try to control or take charge, those wires short-circuit and you get an error message (so to speak) thus giving you the infamous bad trip. *You physically can't over power the deconstruction of your ego...With your own ego...* This is what people don't understand. The deconstruction of your ego on this plant will win. Every fucking time.

    • @Trevorj333
      @Trevorj333 10 лет назад +84

JoeSkutnik Well put!!! I always felt a distinct feeling that the experience was guided by a conscious force outside of my own. If someone was going to try salvia for the first time, I'd say, it's a dream-like trip. Prepare your mind and body to enter a dream. Don't be afraid, and by God don't try to control it. Let go of everything and just go with it. That could mean the difference between pure amazement, and sheer terror.

Many years ago I had a Salvia plant that was gifted to me by a friend. It grew well in my house next to my desk beside the window. So I had a lot of leaves to experiment with. Most of my experiences were like talking to an elderly wise woman. She pretty much told me how to guide my life, showed me my mistakes and sometimes had me time traveling. She was quite judgmental and didn’t hold back on the harsh criticism. The very first time she told me her history, of how hard life is being desperately poor with no hope of escape. She literally ‘spoke’ to me, first in an ancient language, then in song, then in broken Spanish and finally in pictures and whole telepathic concepts. There seemed to be a group or community of wise ones she was associated with. I haven’t ‘visited’ her in years because I just could not face the harshness of her judgements and how she showed me where I was being foolish or making bad choices. Once when I was having a rough time at my job she showed me how I had literally tied myself to that place with a long golden thread. To regain my peace of mind I needed to cut that golden thread. I quit that job two weeks later. Then one late autumn day I left the Salvia plant outside to sunbathe and that night we had an early frost… next day it was a black mushy mass of frost bitten leaves. Very powerful tool but one must be brave and work with it for a long time to understand it at all. Now so many young people abuse it because in our culture there are almost no wise elders to show them how to use it properly. Such a shame. It is not a party drug and should not be used for kicks… unless you want to have your ass kicked. As David Byrne said: ‘This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, this ain’t no fooling around!’

+Time for Fun I agree. I'd also suggest that the reason why Salvia Divinorum hasn't been a massive priority for the DEA, is because that in addition to the very loose reasoning as to why it could be harmful, it also does not provide an opportunity to criminalise any one social, financial or ethnic demographic that a ruling class consider undesirable (crack cocaine for poorer black folk, meth for poorer white folk etc.).
The primary motivation for criminalisation of certain drugs is incarceration, not eliminating physical risk, so there would be little point wasting money and resources of criminalising a drug whose primary users are not considered undesirable from a classically conservative point of view.

I did salvia one time, and here's what I recall: I thought to myself "the taste in my mouth is so weird, it's kind of like..." and before I could complete the thought I experienced a profound sense of falling backwards and I saw myself fall backwards and dash my head against something- that something was my own front tooth! Seeing that it was my tooth in my own mouth in my own head, I also saw my own head fall backwards until it hit something, which was also in my own mouth! Again, I saw my own head fall into my own mouth and knock into a tooth, which was in my own head, over and over until the hallucination stopped. All the while I had a tragic sense of seeing my own death. When it stopped, the thought completed "tastes kind of like...I died" as I touched my tongue to my tooth, I realized that I was 'seeing' as if I was standing on my own tongue, or that I was in the perspective of a taste bud or something. I was covered in really cold sweat. Turns out I was reclining comfortably in bed and no injuries of any sort occurred, thank God. Can't believe that stuff is legal.

Yeah best piece of advice for trying salvia is start with a low dosage and be sitting down comfortably. That falling/sinking sensation is no joke, it's like having an anvil strapped to your back and being pushed off a boat in the ocean (you're not so much going down as being pulled under, imo). Turns out you can breathe in this water, but that doesn't really make the sensation any easier to acclimatize to. My first time I was standing on a 2-rung stepstool to breathe the smoke out of a tiny basement window and I definitely fell off, even though it was like 1 ft off the ground. Also, salvia TASTES TERRIBLE, so be prepared to cough up a lung. To all tryers, go boldly but safely, and best of luck!

Salvia is one crazy trip. Back when it was still legal in my state, my friends and I tried 100x. We all tripped pretty hard. I ended up hallucinating an entirely different world from the dark back yard I was in. At first I was in a sort of hellish landscape, and I was on a conveyor belt with black lines flowing through my body. I saw my friends around me as a strange group of playful demons. I faded back into reality momentarily, only to end up in a swimming pool on a sunny day. I can't remember much after that, just kind of falling through different realities like translucent layers, like pages in a book. It's unexplainable. After that, we dared to try the 140x. On that, I seriously thought I was going to disappear from existence completely. I saw myself as a singular point of red light surrounded by darkness. I kept hearing a phrase that didn't make much sense, "the ceiling and the floor are keeping you here". It was weird. Then, I swear to god, I became a kernel of corn in a field, and was harvested, boxed as Orville Redenbacher's popcorn, and shipped to a grocery store. There, sitting on the shelf in a red box, I saw through the eyes of the box itself. I saw people shopping, clear details in their faces and everything. And I was just hoping that somebody would buy me. That was pretty much the end of that trip. I don't think I could handle a salvia trip nowadays, lol

Salvia certainly is very interesting.... I think I would like to relate some of my experiences and observations. When I was much younger, in my late 20's, I had some friends introduce me to Salvia while at a small camp-ground music festival. They were very respectful of the plant and it was taken with a sense of reverence for the spiritual aspect, or as a teacher. It wasn't pitched as a party drug, novelty, or as something to be taken lightly. So for me, as it was with my good friend LSD, a lot of my trip was centered around discovering things about how my mind worked and created my perception of reality. Salvia had some interesting things to teach there...
On my first experience, the world as I saw it became like a diorama. There was the immediate foreground, the camp fire, the semicircle of people around that, then the trees, then they sky, and stars. The levels of "depth" to my visual field seemed to be layered ... like a diorama. The whole of my visual experience was also kind of like a veil or a tapestry. The stars were like pinholes of light coming through a tapestry. And and interesting thing was that all around the arc of my visual perception, while layered like a diorama, and also stretched across my perception like a tapestry or veil (it had this quasi-unreal quality), there was something going on at the corners. It seemed that at the edge of my perception, especially at the left-most end of my visual field, the "tapestry" was "flapping open" like it wasn't quite attached or anchored, and I had a profound sense that there was a world behind that tapestry and there were "entities" of unknown type that were behind it, working the "machinery" of creating my reality perception... and they had what I would describe as an elf-like sense of humor... maybe seeming to be mischievous but well intended. That was all a feeling... I didn't actually "see" any entities. Another very important impression I got from this is that people in the "diorama" were different than say the trees or rocks or sky. I had a profound sense that people were like a card-board cut-out and that behind each "person" there was an entirely different reality, and the "person" was like the intersection between realities. I took this as everyone having their own subjective reality that intersected with mine and others to create the "consensus reality".
Later I became interested enough to acquire a quantity of raw leaves, and did some acetone extraction (dangerous: don't try this at home kids) to create my own concentration. So there was a short time where myself, some of my siblings, and friends experimented with this interesting plant. Here are some anecdotal observations gleaned from these experiments...
Geometry becomes some thing you can sort of feel or perceive cutting through reality. For example, a round doorknob might give you the sense of the circle of the knob extending into space as a circular "cut" in reality, for lack of a better word. Or as my brother (tried to) explain it, the edges of things seemed to exist not only in 3D reality but also seemed like they were intersections with another dimension or reality behind the cracks. Very hard to articulate that. But there was definitely something to the perception of geometry and edges. Probably behind my sense of a diorama on my first experience, and the sense of a reality behind the cardboard-cutout experience of people in my visual field. Also these invisible projections of planes and stuff through space felt like they went through you as well.
Gravity perception, or sense of heaviness or presence was something that others seemed to experience more than I did, in particular. So there is an effect on that perception, but I can't speak to it too much.
With regard to dissociation, we all noticed that sometimes it would seem that maybe the lower half of your body was in one dimension and the upper part in another. Sort of like dissociating from part of you body experience but not all of it.. also with a strongly geometric component. Speaking of body perception, I could also say that at some points, I strongly felt like my body was maybe dried out and hollow, and I felt literally like a bag of bones more than a solid fleshy entity. I am not sure I would say these were exactly a "dissociative" experiences. But it is the best I can come up with for words to describe it.
The final thing I learned from Salvia has to do with the construction of the model of reality we carry around in our heads. I really noticed this while at a friend's house one time. I realized that the model of the room I hold in my perception is just that: a model. The coffee table was the same coffee table from when I was 4yo, until I focused my attention on it. Then it became the table as it existed in the present, with its details. But the same was true of the lamp in the corner, the wall, the rug... All of these things were "held in place" in my perception of the room by stand-in objects I had experienced when I was about 4yo or so. Like the objects I encountered at that age became the models for things in my future perceptions of reality. The rug was the stand-in rug until I focused on it, then it had all the qualities of the actual rug. Same for the lamp, the walls, etc. So I became very aware of how my perception of reality was really just a model in my head that I was holding, made from primitives I experienced when very young, until I focused my perception on the actual object. Then they would flesh out with their details and not be the "stand-in" objects any longer. I found this very, very fascinating! I am reminded of this experience a bit when reading about Virtual Reality headsets and the idea of "foveated rendering". This is a trick used where the periphery of your vision is not rendered in great detail, but what you're looking at is rendered in high quality. It works by tracking your eyes so the computer knows what part of the display you're actually looking at. It saves on processing power. But my Salvia experience was much more about the construction of the model of reality in my head than it was about the macula or fovea (center of your vision, region of your retina).
I have not done Salvia since those days when it was new, interesting, and my milieu and I were experimenting with it. Just sort of fell away from it. But I do strongly believe it is a "teacher" of sorts, and deserves to be researched. The older I get, the less inclined I am to use psychedelics. Not that I don't like or definitely appreciate them for what they have done for me. But these days I see them as powerful spiritual, metaphysical, or psychological tools and approach them with great respect for their powerful medicine. So I don't tend to take them lightly, or frequently. But they have been an important part of my personal development that I am eternally grateful for having experienced. I am excited, if not elated, that there is now so much research again into the uses of psilocybin in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and especially for those coping with end-of-life like late stage cancer patients and others who need to learn how to face those very very hard realities. I look forward to a greater understanding, both pharmacological and psychological, of these substances. Especially psilocybin and LSD, but also MDMA. Salvia may not have as obvious a psychological benefit as these others can have. But it certainly deserves more study, both in and out of pharmacology.
Psychedelics are powerful, powerful tools and while they can be loads of fun in the right set and setting, they are not to be taken lightly. And there seems to be truth to the fact that if you're already predisposed to a condition such as schizoaffecive or other similar disorders, they might bring that out to the fore. So be aware, be respectful, be responsible. They might seem at first like toys. But they are also very, very powerful 'allies' and teachers. Very strong medicine. And if you're unprepared, they can take you on a ride from the heights of heaven to the depths of hell and back. But "good" or "bad" trip, there is usually something profound to be learned if you have the eyes to see, the ears to hear, as it were.

Wow you really had a good explanation on the "model of reality" thing. I've noticed that and haven't been able to put it into words, but that's exactly correct. I've had a different type of experience though. It actually did the opposite, or maybe we're just describing it differently. My self-constructed version of reality actually barged into how I normally see things. Like I was in a circle with my friends and I could still see everything, but there was also a distinct layer of my mental model of reality that was a vast dioramic backdrop of towering buildings circling us. The deepest I got that time was that I slowly melted into one of the windows or something and my mental model almost covered up reality, becoming way way more detailed. After that it faded pretty fast. But it was similarly a sort of diorama until the point where I meshed with it all.

There are books about salvia - in one (sorry don't have title handy) a fellow visits a shaman and does a "traditional" salvia trip: chewing large quantity of fresh leaves for a long period, resulting in a lengthy, more mild trip, where the two engage in conversation with a "plant goddess." As I understood it, you're meant to inquire of the goddess regarding any ailments you have and she tells you the remedy needed.

Jayden Jackson I made a post here some time ago about the reason for marijuana's criminalization and how it was tied to William Randolph Hearst's monopoly of the American media. The stigma has never gone away. Salvia is a new drug, that... thankfully, is scary for most people. Not scary as in cartels and organized crime scary - more like most ppl who try it once are spooked out of doing it over and over again and abusing it. I personally love it because it's like a short psychedelic reboot for my brain, and I've done it hundreds of time with no lasting effects, yet. Marijuana on the other hand has such high potential for abuse, because it's so enjoyable. Basically, the people on Capitol Hill know this and condone salvia because it is culturally insignificant and its uniqueness gives it pharmaceutical potential, whereas marijuana is seen as culturally detrimental and has contested(although expanding) medicinal exploitability.

I spent some time with it and still interact with it occasionally. When friends and i were young teens we spent a good couple years researching various psychedelicsn before we ever tried them. I've always taken them with specific purposes, in safe environment, babysitter, and mental and physical prep before driving in . I reckon 95% of people experimenting with these kinds of chemicals don't approach it that way at all and suffer for it. Managing all of those specific things is so very important when using salvia.
It's important to acquire from One source at one strength for consistency using a digital scale to weigh doses. It's always better to have an experience that leaves you a little wanting than too much which can be incredibly hard to cope with. Take notes and make adjustments gradually. Salvia definitely isn't s a recreational drug. That needs to be stressed.
I'm not going to go in to the details of the factors that should be present for a productive experience. All the details are easy to find in literature out there.if you approach it appropriately it's can be.., beyond anything that you can imagine. I've never had two experiences that were the same. There's certain elements that kind of consistent for me. But the trips go beyond. The visions the environments the beings that one can experience is baffling to me still. If it's purely a product of my own mind affected and stimulated by the particular chemical I have no idea how in the world I could generate the kind of spaces that I've experienced. It's so hard to not believe that you go to dimensional spaces that really exist. It's so fascinating but it can be intensely terrifying too I don't recommend it to anyone but... Just be careful and don't hurt yourself.

One thing I don't see anyone mentioning is the "side-effects" if you will. I did it once about 15 years ago with a friend, the high/trip was pretty cool, felt like my bedroom was a one room house in the forest from the Blair Witch Project but what I remember strongly is the increased salivation, cold sweat/clammy feeling, feeling physically uncomfortable (and unable to get comfortable) and not being able to go to sleep later.
It's kinda nice if you sprinkle a little bit in your weed, certainly alleviates the cotton-mouth, this is what I did with the rest of the stuff I had because I didn't want to do it (pure) again.
My brother tried it the next day and and ended up lying on his bed with his feet on the wall because he thought he was in a kindergarten and gravity had shifted so he was trying to walk up the wall. He also thought my name was Jonathan.

Well, all I got as side-effects was feeling very hot, and having dreams with very vivid colors the nights after.
I think what's more important is that no one talks about the unique propriety of the plant (I searched but apparently no other hallucinogenic plant has this), the inverted tolerance. The more you take salvia, the more effects you get. The tolerance goes down to normal in about a week.
Another thing, people mostly take extracts, wich are surely why the plant is described as very powerful. Of course when someone takes 30 times a normal dose, specially for the first time trying it. Nobody would do that for any drug, but apparently everyone does with salvia.

    • @InVacuo
      @InVacuo Год назад +2

@@AGKyran That's really interesting, I'd never heard of the inverted tolerance.
With the doses, are you sure that the "times" means times the normal dose? The store where we bought it from had 5 or 10x as the lowest and we bought the next one up, 10 or 15x which the guy recommended for first timers. Also I think we all got the same side-effects (but as I say it was 15 years ago so forgive me for being a tad hazy on the details...).

    • @AGKyran
      @AGKyran Год назад +5

@@InVacuo It's not exactly the normal dose, it depends of how you take it.
A 10x extract simply means that you take 10 grams of dried leaves and you concentrate it with chemical products, so you end with 1 gram.
If you want to go simply you'll make a cigarette and add salvia. With a bong or a pipe you'll basically add around one gram, it's not very accurate though.
Otherwise you can make a tea and then of course you'll add much more.
On Erowid (wich is a very sure site about this), they say a strong dosage for dried leaves is 0,75g. So I was even underestimating it apparently. I thought one gram was a pretty light experience to start with.
Of course it's relative. Some people have a higher tolerance, some a lower.
I think it's logical the person in the store recommanded a higher dose. Most people tend to prefer to start with a higher dose, as for a good number of people otherwise they won't feel a thing.
It oddly works like when people smoke weed for their first time and don't feel anything. I don't know the science behind it but it's like there's a time for the brain receptors to wake up.
Don't worry about the hazy memory, I'm far from being the best on this too. Anyway you seem to have you and your friend had a strong experience.
Personally I always took dried leaves (I took some 40x once and it did nothing), and I got used to smoke a salvia cigarette before sleeping. But the first real effect I had was with a pipe. It also need a lighter that can burn it with a hot temperate.
      Salvia is very specific xD
My best experience stays when I smoked it in front of my computer and suddenly my right eye was seeing a jungle instead. I heard a woman laughing. It was somehow funny. I think I should try it again. A bag of dried leaves it cheap as hell and can last soooo long.

I had a Salvia experience when I was 19 that absolutely humbled me. I had never done psychedelics before and had no idea what I was in for. Just thought it was about funky colours and whatnot. What I ended up getting was an experience that felt like a lifetime, where my atheism got torn to absolute shreds. Entities mocked and chastised me for my arrogance and wouldn't relent until I humbled myself, sincerely apologised and earnestly asked them to teach me more. Once I did that, they took me in and raised me as one of their own. I learned and grew, going on to make my own entity family before becoming aware of a tether to my psychical body which had previously been stretched so thin it was impercievable. The tether was undulating, shortening and thickening with each undulation until I found myself back in my body, with my friend asking me how it was. My response was "I need... To not talk... For a while..." and I remained completely speechless for about an hour afterward, apart from asking if we could go smoke a joint. I can never appropriately convey the experience or how real it was. Theists never, ever seemed insane to me ever again. I miss my Salvia entity brethren, but haven't smoked it since. For the longest time, I was terrified that it's a crazy making drug.
I have taken mushrooms since, and they have given me the tools to assimilate what I learned on Salvia in a way that is compatible with consensus reality and everyday waking consciousness.
Psychedelics are utterly fantastic, but they are not toys, and shouldn't be thought of as "drugs" in the same vain as coke, meth, heroin etc. They must be respected. They are not addictive. They are not *just* "hallucinogens." Not everyone can handle them, so I wouldn't recommend them for everyone, but I would absolutely recommend them to the majority of folks who are curious, provided they do at least enough homework to amount to a GED/British A level ahead of time, including philosophy, and get their set and setting right. If you can't handle things like self confrontation, learning who you really are, facing deep fears you didn't even know you had, discovering that reality and conscious experience is so much larger and spectacular than the physical that it makes the physical seem almost not real, or even just simply having no idea what's actually real and what's an illusion anymore, then yeah, write people like me off as crazy and go live your life trip-free. It's all good. If you think you can handle these things, then hey, come join the astral party in the super-dimensional realm of what the f**k! 😂

The thing about psychedelics is, it seems profound and enlightening at the time, but any kind of knowledge or growth obtained from it is fleeting and illusory. If it really was something that can enlighten the masses and promote world peace and empathic kindness, then we would already be living in a better world since the 60s. Clearly the peace and love hippies of the Age Of Aquarius turned into the Karens of the age of the boomers, so anything they learned from the mystical experiences of LSD was temporary and easily forgotten.

@Assembled Existence someone on Reddit with more in-depth knowledge than me said this, before I misinterpreted it through lazy inattentive reading and made false comparisons:
The plant that is probably closest to Salvia divinorum is probably the genus Nepeta, aka Catnips. And the chemicals in it are structurally and pharmacologically close to Salvinorins.
Actually, most, if not all, plants in the mint family have chemicals that, like Salvinorin, are agonistic at the Kappa opiate receptor. (KOR, and by chance, our Nepeta leaves look like little hearts... :) ). This includes menthol, as found in chewing gums. It is just that in most of them, it is too weak to notice. But in catnips, the main pharmacologically active components, the Nepetalactones, are strong enough to show clinically active effects.
Both Salvinorins and Nepetalactones have a characteristic lactone group (the ring structure with an oxygen atom in the ring, as well as double bonded to an adjacent carbon atom), it is just the Salvinorin molecule is more complex.
Now, as far as the effects---well, obviously, they are not the same. But many different plants in the mint family, including catnip and lemon balm (Melissa spp) have been used in many different cultures for centuries for anxiety-relieving and sedative effects. Catnip, in my experience, is pretty strong, but it is not exactly "psychedelic"---at least not while we are awake. Effects are usually sedation and relaxation. If taken before sleep, it will usually lead to vivid dreams, some of which might be frightening, and involve contact with "entities", but which are mostly peaceful. It also depends what concentration it is taken in. Tisanes made from leaves and flowers are good, but extract is much stronger. Since my experience with Salvia is limited, I can't really say much about it, but I feel that it is somewhat comparable, especially that, if taken regularly for a few days, everything takes on a slight "otherworldly" feeling. As could be expected, it is somewhat hard to describe the feeling.

It feels like a life time on the otherside. The first thing that happened to me was it felt like my mouth opened 360° then I kinda fused to my couch, which spiraled through space and timealong a rainbow bridge, things around me were like a tool music video. The giant face made out of everything noticed me and in a stern but reassuring tone told me that I shouldn't have seen this, that I wasn't supposed to be here yet. Then all the rest of its eyes looked at the central one which pulled me through it. For a brief moment I knew everything all the secrets of the universe, but the human mind cannot process that much info and it quickly fades, my consciousness was pushed through a thin fluid membrane and back into my corporeal vessel, which was covered in cold sweat and tasted like mothballs. Salvia is one hell of a teacher. And should not be abused, it is to be respected, especially for those with a weak mind.

Basically salvia feels like you get tossed from a 3D dimension into a 2D dimension and you feel your brain trying to process the new reality. It becomes the new reality in which you have knowledge that you are alternating from this reality to the next and so on into infinity. The "bad" trips are basically when you get stuck in the salvia loop and you resist it. Resisting the salvia loop will cause panic and trigger a type of fight or flight response that makes the user flail or try to jump out of windows.

I wonder abut the 2D thing. That is an interesting point. I wonder if it is more a regression into a lesser energetic state rather than a progression into a higher one. It is profound in that you stop being a human, but possibly it is a step right back rather than a leap forward. It made me realise everything exists as energy and it is possible to be something that is nothing tangible, what we think of as only a concept. The joint consciousness of an ant colony, the ground with Antelope running over, or the sound a cow makes. Everyone should do it once. Properly, in a silent completely dark safe environment. Don't try to move, just let it happen. It won't hurt you, it will blow your brain up in a good way. :)

Be sure to be sitting or laying down when you trip on Salvia divinorum, as there is a common effect known as "salvia gravity" where you may feel "pushed down" and so your body actually might move down.
One time it happened simultaneously with the perception that this 3D world was just a flat page in a never ending book of other dimensions.

This plant is no joke. When it first became popular in head shops, I tried a 25x concentrated dried leaf product. I packed a typical size bowl, hit it once, and then pulled out a marb menthol. Before I lit it, I totally dissociated. I believed I was a tube made of light spinning in space. Wondering if "I'd ever become a person again" (literal thought), I started to come out of it. I had put on a Ravi Shankar CD, so sitar music got mixed in to the trip. I then though I had sunk into and became part of the blankets. I figured maybe my wife (ex now) might not see how totally F#@%ed up I was! I came out of it in maybe 5-10 minutes, but it was BY FAR the most intense type of trip I have EVER had, which includes all of the usual suspects, along with real absinthe (I should have said traditional/madeand a couple others. I never used it again, and I strongly advise not taking it, but if you do HAVE A SOBER PERSON watch out for you while tripping.
EDIT: It seems likely that my experience with Absinthe was due to the placebo effect and/or poorly made alcohol with too much methanol in it. I will stand by my description of that evening, but numerous responders who seem well informed about Absinthe or annisette liquors generally have let me know it is not supposed to do anything strange to a person. I also looked up thujone, one chemical in Absinthe believed to be hallucinogenic and while it is considered poisonous/toxic (which it is if enough is ingested) it is not noticeably psychoactive at any dose.

I watched a friend fall down and cut him ass cheek open on his now broken $400 bong... He had to have stitches and never wanted to do it again. I have done my share and sitting on the floor with a pipe in a comfortable place with people you trust is an absolute must. My first experience was bad, through a bong and I was afraid of it for a few years after that. But tried it with a pipe years later. Sitting on the ground in the forest, it was an eye open and helped me spiritually. If you respect it as a medicine and not a drug, it can definitely teach you.

If you get the more potent like 20x or 50x one hit was all it took. It literally did feel like a eternity. Every time I made a move it just felt like the same thing was happening over and over forever. When I finally came out of the real intense part and was able to function again my friend told me it was probabaly around 1 minute. I said fuck that and never touched it or had a desire to touch it again. The only drug I ever did that actually scared me. But I was young then and more carefree , been drug free now for years.

As far as I remember, I felt like I was sinking into the ground. I'm pretty sure it was only 5x or 10x, but I still tripped pretty hard. It was definitely horrifying, but I've heard a lot of people have had great times on it.

I found it kinda scary. My friend that had it he had a couple of his coworkers try it. They were roofers after one of them took a hit he tried to go back to work and he shot himself in the hand with a nail gun and all he could do was just stand there and stare at his hand. Mr friend said when he tried it he wandered out to the edge of the fence at his coworkers house and when he came down he thought oh crap his wife was gonna be pissed because he thought so much time had passed when in reality it was only like 5 minutes. But yeah for me and everyone I personally know of that have tried it. Pretty horrifying for us and the majority except for maybe one want nothing to do with it ever again.

It has a weird reverse tolerance so the more you do the less you need the next time. If you do enough just smelling it can set you off into another dimension. If you do it a lot you start to get really weird, but it will blow your mind wide open.

My experience was not like others. I was frozen solid not able to move and when coming out of the trip. I felt like I was traveling through different dimensions and every time I entered a new dimension. I was smashing through a wall like the Kool-Aid Man. I've tried Salvia multiple times and every time the same trip and feeling of not being able to move and the traveling through dimensions has always happened. Other people that I was with who tried Salvia had great and fun trips. Some of those people thought they were a cat and acted like a cat during there trip.

My only experience with Salvia was when I was about 19, with my older brother supervising. It started with a slow pulse, as though I was feeling and seeing a sound wave hitting me. As the pulse enveloped me my vision went dark, and I began to pass upward through a mosaic, almost like a stained glass ceiling. I started to get a glimpse of what was through this ceiling; it was dark but I could make out three large shadowy figures positioned around a large table (the surface of which was this ceiling I was passing through). I heard one of them say; "what's he doing here, he's not supposed to be here", and I got a sense that the figures were panicked and looking over their shoulder for someone (their superior). I looked down at the table and it was light up with countless points of light and a grid, each one appeared to have a value assigned (a string of numbers), like some kind of map of the universe. I felt myself being pushed back down as I came to. I could feel myself smiling and heard myself apoligising for smiling too much, but my bother told me I wasn't even smiling. All this only lasted a few minutes and I felt perfectly normal after only a couple more minutes.

I hated salvia even though I enjoyed the common psychedelics like acid, shrooms, dmt, etc. I tried 20x extract. The trip always carried an intense sense of dread that was unlike anything I've ever felt. When I first tried it, my entire reality became just a page of a book, and I was now completely separate from that book and my previous reality, just a reader. The book was like a flip book, where each page showed a visual representation of a moment of my reality. Everything outside of the book was just a blank white. Being ripped away from my reality and realizing it was just a page of this book was terrifying and I felt so alone now that I was not a part of that reality anymore. Pure dread. On the page of the book were my friends hanging out and smoking the salvia, but I was no longer with them. Incredibly as I started coming down, the horror merely changed form. As I was once again reintegrated with my reality and back into the pages of the book, I started to experience everything as a repeating loop, where everything I saw, heard and felt repeated over and over again. At every repetition, time did move forward a miniscule amount. But it was so miniscule that it just felt so achingly slow and stuck. My entire experience was stuck in a loop like a CD skipping, where it would slowly read the next bit of the song, but barely. Again, feeling like I was now going to experience my entire life this way filled me with pure dread. 0/10 do not recommend.

I tried it once. I took one big hit of some 20x and was instantly in some other horrid, torturous reality. I was strapped down in a dentist chair and a dentist was drilling my teeth without anesthetic for what seemed like an eternity. They were malicious and sadistic. Eventually I came to the realization that the dentist was me and then I found myself in a different reality where I was a leg that was part of a giant wheel made of hundreds of legs like me. After an eternity I would get my chance to take a step in the running wheel leg thing. I'm not sure what all else happened, it seemed like several eternities. One thing was clear though, salvia was there, as a conscious entity and it was extremely cruel. There were some moments as I was coming down and regaining consciousness that taken separately I would consider positive and beneficial, but as an overall experience salvia beat the absolute hell out of me with extreme prejudice. I would only recommend lower doses to anyone.

I had an Asian wife and a few very capable and talented kids and I had a career as an engineer which is a complete departure from every occupation I’ve ever actually had in this world. Obviously there was so much more I’d have to explain to give the most accurate description of this event , what I’ll say is that it was such a profound experience that even a few years later I still have times when it’s on my mind and I try to understand what it all means if it actually means anything at all. I definitely wasn’t prepared for what transpired, while I don’t regret it by any means I think if I could go back in time to this night I’d probably suppress my curiosity with salvia and abstain from giving it a try.

I was sitting in a chair each time with nothing to do but relax and I knew for a fact I had nothing else to do. Salvia made me feel strongly pulled to one side of my chair kinda like gravity shifted in a way but also like I felt the need to go that way, to do something. I felt like I had a mission to accomplish. One time in my bedroom I remember completely losing my sense of reality and where I was. I felt very warm and tingly all over. Like licking a 9v battery but all over my body. Slightly uncomfortable but kinda like if you take a lot of niacin. Each time I've done it 10 minutes later I was completely sober and could look back on the experience. Nothing revolutionary or inspiring. Nothing pleasurable. But nothing terrifying either. Just very very strange.

Want to hear my experience on this stuff? I will try to describe it the best I can.
I smoked one hit of the extract as a teenager with some friends out in the woods. I immediately left my body and my focus was entirely on the tree in front of me which opened a red, ominous eye on its trunk that felt like it was peering into my soul. This tree then began to multiply at an exponential rate until the image of the multitude of trees became a mosaic of the tree itself. At this point I guess I became freaked out and started running, still out of body. As I did so the branches of the trees around me began to get sucked into the black hole that replaced my consciousness. These branches morphed into my limbs and I could feel physical pain as they were snapping off of the trees. At this point I began to come to and must have been tired from running so I squatted down. All of the rocks around me felt like they were staring at my soul the same way the tree had before so I got back up and started walking again. Afterwards, my friends told me that as I was running I was yelling at the top of my lungs but I had no recollection of doing so.
Even though it freaked me out, once I calmed down I felt like grateful for the experience. It was fun to think back on it and it seemed to alter my perception of reality in a positive way. I think the fear it gave me was like an amplified version of the primal fear that naturally exists in the psyche. We subconsciously fear the things around us because at any point they have the potential to do us physical harm if we are not careful. Yet we are actually made up of all these things. Our existence is defined by our experiences. I still remember the experience crystal clear decades later. It is definitely unlike any other substance I have tried. If you are curious I would recommend trying it out once.

I met the 'Salvia people' before I even knew of the Salvia people. I have seen this entity and was greeted with friendly waves and welcoming gestures. An amazing experience. I told them I'd be back one day. I keep a stash of Salvia for when I'm ready to visit again. That was over ten years ago. I think I might be ready for another 'Salvia vacation'. I'm a bit older, and a bit wiser now. I think it's time.

Love this plant! If you start with the lowest dosage and are in a safe space/with a friend or two, then it can be an absolutely beautiful experience x0x

I have salvia plants at home and didn’t know it was a psychedelic until this video. So is it the flower or the leaf that you take? Do you ingest it or smoke it, and what is a safe dose for your 1st time please😇
