Sometimes, it depends on conditions and also state/provincial rules. Ideally, we like to suspend two flies at different depths below an indicator to help fish more of the water column. Good question
so when you are euro nymphing, are you casting it out far beyond your rod or are you supposed to keep it under direct tension keeping the line directly under the rod?
having some issues casting my nymphs, doesnt cast out of the water if using full 15 ft leader, when i get down to 12ish feet i can cast but my fly line loop seems to be annoying going back and forth in between the guides. Is the idea to really only use the 15 foot leader as your whole line? If this makes any sense. I guess im having problems casting it. Feels like trying to cast a spinning rod with 15 ft of mono out. Figured out with only 10 feet out i can plop it up and out, just feels weird. Very new to euro.
If you want to get in some easy practice you can just put 30 feet of mono on your reel and crimp on a splitshot and try with just that until you can get all 30 feet in a cast. If it is still too hard add more splitshot at least until you get a feel. As you get better add less weight on the splitshot. I know for me it has always felt like a mix of water load cast on a normal fly setup and an upstream mend. Good luck. Another random tip, you kinda want to have the flies splat down with this so they sink faster. Also a mono rig is what most competitive anglers used to fish where your leader was a lot longer than 15ft but it was changed in competitive fishing when they decided the leader could only be 2x the rod length. Rules for because rules can be made, it is the same with why euro fishing doesn't use spitshots as weights. They just decided to make a rule saying it wasnt allowed. Unless you are competitive fishing i recommend avoiding the line to leader catching on the guides all together and just have a bit longer leader
A lot of the time when i have lots of line out I lift the line out of the water as much as I can while maintaining good tension. I then rip the nymphs out the water (not too hard because you will often set the hook on a fish while doing this) and swing them around in an arc behind me to my target.

It would be less confusing to beginners if you just call it "fly fishing with nymphs" like it has been for centuries.
