  • Very early '60s Dick Dale & the Del-Tones perform the tunes Teen Beat and All Night Long at the Harmony Park Ballroom in Anaheim, California.
Oh, and try to ignore the TCR (time code reading) display at the bottom of the picture...I have no control over that!

Lana, he was the greatest. I'll always treasure the brief hour that I spent with you and him on the phone. He was my inspiration. I was so looking forward for The King of Flamenco Surf Guitar opening up for The King of The Surf Guitar. I guess that I'll have to hold out on that one until I'm in Rock n Roll Heaven where he is and then together we can ride That Glory Wave.

A group of us drove all the way from Denver, Colorado to see Dick Dale perform his last concert at The Rhythm Collision. What a nice event organized by a great group of folks. It was equally nice to meet you and you husband if only for a moment. Thank you

Gosh it was a great time to be a kid in southern California back then, so exciting... Last saw the great Dick Dale at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz before the pandemic hit, the placed was packed. Dick must have been in his eighties - but you could feel those cords in gut.

Now this is the Dick Dale I followed through high school in SoCal, class of ‘62, the local armory and auditorium performances and the Rendezvous Ballroom in Newport where we learned the Stomp on that wooden floor. Dick used to come out after one of their breaks, alone, would start a beat on the drums, then the drummer would come out and take over, then he would move to the sax and would end up on his left hand guitar, he knew how to please his audiences and I will never forget being there.

Yeah, Bless His Soul - I wear one of his shredded "Dick Dale" Ernie Ball picks on my surfer chain, with a few other items on it, every day. I got that pick off the floor - one of many Dick tossed and also got him to sign my original "Sample Copy - Not for Sale" Deltone "Surfer's Choice" LP. Dick loved performing - he WAS a Showman for sure and super knowledgeable about his sound and the Fender connection. Also, what a nice guy to talk to - no B.S. Dick Dale - the King on Everything here plus a geat clip from Harmony Park of kids doin' the "Surfer Stomp". One of the few clips where you can catch this dance. Thanks so much for the post and wonderful actually see Lana posted also.

Flats & a pink mini, KC?? Wow!
If you still relied on the same habadasher to get your clothing you would have fit in at the Viva Las Vegas Rock-a-billy event last week.
Over 20,000 participants attended the event, many looking like their grandparents did back in 62 at HP.
Although I am the "old man" in my band the Showmen, (we were playing for a year before Eddie coined our name), thanks to a plethora of lessons I received from DD, like DD, we continue to rock as we did in Vegas last week.

DD & His DT's are neither playing at Harmony or the Riverside Armory. I played at both places in 1962; there was a small corral stage front at Harmony and a big sliding door at stage rear at the Riverside Armory that we opened in the summer.
It looks like the San Bernardino Municipal Auditorium where my band the Sho-Men also played with the Astronauts in 63.
Looking at the grille cloths of the Showmens, the gig was probably in 62 or 63.
I recall surf was dead at the end of 63 and DD was not getting the crowds like shown in this photo.

KC, you must have mis-read what I wrote,. I did not state that DD & His DT's did not play at Harmony or the Riverside Armory. On many occasions I was in the same van with DD when we drove up to Harmony or the Armory.
I stated that this vid is not from Harmony or the Riverside Armory.
If you want to re-live the days from Harmony, come on up to Riverside on the 10th of Jan where my band will be playing many of DD's tunes at the Marriott at Rhythm Collision II.
The Marriott will look like 1961 and most people will be dressed as if the year was 1961.
